I currently have a vario 2 and I am tryin to replace it at the moment. Ideally I wanted a touch plus because I use the internet and dataon 3g an awful lot but I am struggling to get hold of one and I am considering a touch instead.
My only reservation is the lack of 3g and I was wondering how people are getting on with the speed withput 3g.
I know that the touch plus doesn't have wifi and this doesn't bother me because I have an unlimited data tarif and dont even bother with the wifi when I am at home with the wireless network because I dont need it.
I am just not sure how I would manage with slower internet speeds HOWEVER I am wondering if the more modern spec of the touch compared to my vario2 would speed things up anyway. I dont have the technical knowledge to be able to guess on this.
I would really welcome peoples views on the internet and email capabilities (not over wifi) and would especially like to hear from you if you have or have had your hands on both phones.

hi mobilecat
infact touch contain wifi but it has no 3g
as regard its internet abilities it is slow it reminds me with the old dialup internent connections where you wait for many seconds for a page to load
(may be my provider in egypt has an old tech network i dont know)
as regard e-mails if you configure it to get your mail from your mailbox every two hours and you may not feel the slowness of download however when you are sending you will take time sending (and writting "No keyboard")

Sorry I got muddled when typing. I realise that the touch plus has the 3g and the Touch has the wifi.
I really want the 3g but I am struggling to get one I can afford so I am trying to work out how feesible the data without 3g is on the touch. Anyone in the UK got any tips?

There has been at no time in the last 4 months that I have ever needed 3G .. the device has EDGE, which may be a bit slower then 3G but not by much.. and anyway , as stated it has wifi .. so would I buy the next version.. yes.. evan if it had 3G or not.. as for 3.5 G LOL which ISP supports that ???

Having recently upgraded to the 3G Touch Cruise, I can say there is a definite difference (although this is both due to 3G and processor speeds). You can alleviate some of the speed issues by using Opera Mini though.

Thanks for that - makes me feel a little more confident. Not bothered at all for the wifi as I have never had any need for it in the 4 years I have had it on my devices :)

I know I know - I would love to buy a cruise but they are expensive and they are not available with tmobile (my provider) at the moment and I am about to renew my contract. If they had been available I would have got one but to buy one would have been too much - thats why I have saved money by getting the touch rather than upgrading directly and getting the touch plus.

you will notice a difference without 3g but it is managable, opera mini is great and really speeds up browsing the web over 2g.
Emails will take a lot longer to download over 2g.
Overall it depends on what kind of activites you do on the net.
2g is about the speed of dial up
I too would love a touch plus but it came out after the touch and by then i had brought the touch, give it a swirl and let us know what ya think.

I had a M3100 [tytn] with hsdpa, moved to an athena with hsdpa, and then to a touch enhanced.
It is kindof annoying sometimes, say when im downloading a program, or really anything over 1mb, because it takes a while.. but if you dont need it right there and then, its ok.
People quote the edge spec,
but on vodafone, ive never ocne got edge, nd the icon is enabled. My friend also has the normal touch, and he too has never had edge...
and after a quick google, it seems tmobile does have edge, but only orange is the other network to have it

I'm not big on downloading. Most of my emails are simple text and the websites I need constant access to (when I get am email notification) are farily straightforward and easy ones. I need access on the go for freelance work but I dont need it to be lightening fast - just useable.

In that case I would say that gprs should be more than fine, you will notice a difference, I had the vario 2 at first and switching to the touch i noticed a difference but it's usable. The touch is a great phone for its price.

Tmobile wanted to up my contract from £25.49 to £27 per month and give me the touch plus for free with £6 P&P, or charge me £15 a month with no phone - no brainer really as I got the touch for £133 so I save a fair bit. If I dont like it I can try again and I can still sell my vario 2 - someone can probably fix it as its only the syncing that isn't working.
its 2.5g EDGE
which is reasonably fast....not dial-up.....maybe bit faster 128k maybe?

touch plus has no wifi..
Wifi is completely useless to me. I have had it for about 3 years and I dont use it all. I ahve no need for it. If I am in the house or elsewhere I use the 3g or I used to use the gprs. I have unlimited data on my tarif - on the phone or as a modem so wifi is pretty redundant under those circumstances.
