ActiveSync issues

I'm having issues with ActiveSync 4.5. It will sync fine with the phone, trouble occurs when I'm trying to flash a rom. Once I get to the "white out screed" part and need to reconnect activesync-can't get it to reconnect with the phone. I'm running XP sp2 on my computer. New to this flashing and whatnot, done my first the other night. I disconnected the usb cable from the computer and plugged it back in immediately and it connected allowing me to install the new rom. When trying out a new one, that doesn't even work and I'm sure it's not wise to do it anyways. What am I missing on getting it to reconnect?
