We all know the Shift has limited battery life, therefore it's important we either carry a spare battery or an external battery charger.
I have found a few good products:
http://www.dvhardware.net/review120_acryan_mobilit.html
and
http://www.computerbatteries.co.uk/gb3/b/ubp0767b.html
The problem is the Shift uses 12V Voltage, these battery are for 15V and 19V, so we will need to find one which has a 12V output in it. Any ideas here?

Yea, i seen this one as well, the reason why i don't like it is because it's so thick, if you compare it to the one i mention above, you can see the thickness difference. I hope we can find something better then this.

Wow, seems nice but too bulky. I ve bought a small external battery with 5000 ma (4-5 hours),

yes, i know that's what we expect it theory, but we can never trust that, therefore it's best if some one can actually test it, see how fast it will charge the HTC shift, and how long it will last, i too will do some more research and see whether there is any good product out there.

My unit arrived and works fine with shift. Voltage can be set to 12v and there is a jack like shifts one. I will charge it for several hours and tomorrow I will do a test. I will leave it turned on to check how many hours we get.

Could you post a picture of the device next to the shift?
I'd like to compare sizes.

For what it's worth, I have the Tekkeon battery too, and have been using it for other purposes. It's one of the few universal batteries that will give you 19v (for some laptops) as well as lower voltages as well - makes it very versatile. There's a wide variety of adapter tips to fit many different devices. One version also has a USB port with fixed 5v on the battery in addition to the normal power cord so you could both run a laptop (or Shift) at the selectable voltage and also run/charge a USB device (phone, camera, etc.) at the same time. Of course, your battery will drain quicker, but it's a nice feature. Overall, I like it.
Regarding size, it's about the same as other batteries of similar capacity, my guess is it's close to (but a little smaller than) the length and thickness of the Shift, but a couple inches / 7cm narrower. Specs are on the Tekkeon site.

Test began at 08.47 (GMT+1).
08:47 -> Sifht at 99% and battery at 100%
13:20 (4 1/2 after) Shift at 95%, battery at 0%
Continue with the test
PD: Keep in mind that this was the first charge of the external battery. Theorically the best performance is got after 4 or 5 charges...

Thanks for the test, so you are saying the external battery will last you additional 3 hours? it will be interesting to know if there are other product which can last longer than that. personally i am looking for one that looks like a mouse mat, thin and wide like the one i show in the first post. the good thing about that is you can place the shift on top of it or use it like a mouse mat.

Well, 4.5 hours using the battery. Now HTC shift is using its internal battery.
Current state is 45%. So, until now, 6 hours running and HTC Shift is at 45%. I think its nice....
anyway I ve orderer too the 20000 ma battery but I suppose I cant carry all the day with it. I ve a very little samsonite bag where I carry the shift, a mouse and the battery.

Your last post showed twice, once at 2.40pm and again at 10.17pm. Meh...
I've ordered the 20000mAh battery from a Hong Kong seller on Ebay, should provide more running time than I'll ever need. I'll also be able to use it with my various other devices.
I see it also has a 5v output via a USB socket, also useful.

From the BixPC website, the BP170 page -
"This battery has a 19V output voltage port. An external battery works differently from an internal battery. The output voltage of an external battery should close to your device AC/DC power adapter output voltage, not your internal battery output voltage. For example, no matter what is your laptop internal battery output voltage, if the AC power adapter output voltage is 18V~20V, you can use this battery. If the AC power adapter output voltage is 15~16V, then you can not use this external battery."
The Shift requires 12V, not 19V.

the battery has 3 output, 19V output, 12V output and a USB 5V Output, so it will work with Shift, i have just got it and charging it for the initial charge. This thing is thin, and i am pretty sure this will make Shift last for whole day, i will report back the exact number later.

Yup, UPS just delivered my 20000mAh unit from the Ebay seller. The listing stated DC 19V, 16V, 9V, 8.4V, 6V, 5V, 4.2V outputs, however it only does 19V, 16V, 12V and 5V.
A little annoying, as I now can't charge my 9V EEEpc from it. It will be ok for all my other gadgets though.

I start the test at 4pm on thursday, Shift battery level 100%. Max brightness, 3G, Push Mail, Wifi, everything on, playing video in loop, basically setting the Shift to max battery drain, it's now 1:30am on friday (Shift been running for 9 hours), battery level is still full. And the external battery still show 75% left !!!! I have no doubt i can have shift running on all time for at least 24 hours without turning off. I guess with this setup, i won't even bother to put Shift in sleep mode anymore, and guess what, i won't even use the SnapVue that much due to the same reason, my Shift is running Vista all time with faster connection then SnapVue, better function then SnapVue....this battery pack is truely quite amazing, yes i know it's not small, but i actually prefer it then the two model that other people are using, it's thinner so it fits inside my bag easily, it doesn't get hot at all and you can even use it like a mouse pad. My shift is still running movie at this moment, i will report back with exact time that the Shift will last with this external battery when it's finally drain dry...

Ok, now the external battery and Shift's battery are both empty, so i started the test yesterday at 4pm with max battery drain, it can last me until 10am this morning, so that a total of 18 hours!
I actually predict this as well before the test, so for anyone else, how can you work out how long the battery will last? you need to look at the figure of Watt-Hour. This battery's capacity is 171Wh(Watt-hour), Shift's internal battery output is 7.4V & 2700mAh. So Shift's internal battery capacity is:
7.4V x 2700 mAh = 19980mVAh = 19.9Wh (Watt-Hour).
The Bix External battery capacity is 171 so:
171/19.9=8.6 times of your internal battery capacity
So in theory if Shift can run by it's battery for 2 hours.
This external battery can run it for 8.6 times more so that is 8.6 x 2 = 17.2 hours
17.2 hours plus the original shift's 2 hours gives you about 18 hours total run time. If you charge your device and battery daily, this should gives you the ability to run Shift full time without charging it even when you are at home, all you need to do is plug it in when you go to bed then tomorrow you are loaded and ready to go again.

This is not an option for me thing looks an inch thick and 12 inches diagonal.
The whole point of the shift is portability if your going to get a battery of this size you may as well just take a 12 inch laptop and benefit from the big screen.
Only benefit of this is if your planning a camping trip

The Tekkeon costs some 119 euro in the Netherlands, excl. postage & handling. Of course the dollar price is much lower, but there doesn't seem to be an USA based trader that takes European orders. Via Ebay I got in three days an unbranded universal battery from HongKong based firm PowerBiz via Ebay (http://preview.tinyurl.com/47qpv3).
Total cost incl. postage etc. 92 euro.
Pro:
works great!
20,000 mA or 74 Wh - 150% of MP3450 (or 18 hours of Vista on Shift :p
LCD screen
12, 16, 19 V switchable as well as 5 V USB out
charges my Shift & Kaiser (and if necessary itself) simultaneously, nice when travelling
good set of plugs, for Nokia, SE & other phones as well
small form factor, 80% of Shift, looks quite nice (brushed alu)
Con:
150 grams heavier than Tekkeon
no 5, 6, 7,5 or 9 V
no leather sleeve
My conclusion: very happy with it

Maybe the external bettery(20.000mA) isnt working correctly now. Until now It worked correctoy (16-18 hours). In 5-6 hours is empty and when Its at 20% I ve to increase output to 16V because if I set to 12V then my HTC Shift start to flick (charge then no charge then charge....each one second).
Has anyone seen something similiar?
wu5262
10-04-2008, 03:42 PM
I have been using my external batery for a few weeks now, it works perfectly, see my previous post for detail.
I previously report an extra 18 hours of Shift usage time, but i realize after a few recharge that is the initial charge, i now have about 25+ plus more hours usage time....kind of more then enough, basically i am able to carry my shift out and use it without going near a charger for 4 days or more.
Volumn wise it's similar to the external battery that other members are using, it's just a different form factor, it's ultra thin, but wide and long, kind of like a MacBook air.
I think i will also buy a smaller external battery in case i wants to go light sometimes....
btw, my battery can charge from 5v all the way up to 19v
I'm not sure what are you comparing the BP170 to, but it is quite huge imho. Nothing wrong with that of course, but what you gain in capacity you are also adding in weight and size. The capacity is 3.4x the Tekkeon MP3450, but size is almost as many times larger. The BP170 and Shift put together weigh more than any ultraportable laptop.
Again, nothing wrong with this, but the BP170 is something I would def not use for the Shift, and that is a personal preference. Here's a comparison, the Tekkeon is the MP3450:

nice summary, sorry for the confusion, when i say volume wise, i was refer to battery volume, anyway, i too agree BP170 is not suitable for Shift alone, but since i got other unit such as Athena and EEE 900 and is my bag, i feel more secure by carrying BP170, i can use the device without thinking about battery for days. And the most important thing here for me is form factor, i need something thin so the battery and everything else can be put into one bag, (thin bag).

I too have bought the same battery from the same vendor. I too have experienced the same thing as you have mentioned above. Since there are two of us now who are experiencing this, I would guess that it is "intended"? I honestly do not know. But I did try plugging another notebook in, there was no flicker; though it uses a different connector.
It's quite a strange behaviour if you ask me. Have you discovered anything else that may explain this behaviour?

I have used the Tekkeon a few times now.
I use it to recharge my shift when it is back in my bag since I seldom use it for more than two hours in a row. (Dutch railways just are not that long :) )
I can recharge my shift about two times, so that makes for about six hours of vista use in total. Perfect for a up and down work day to the other side of the country and back.
And it can also recharge my Kaiser or my BT Heaphones through the USB power outlet at the same time :)
Works for me.

Of course, if that's not bulky enough for you, you could get one of these -

I think that this is a good option for the shift while you don't use it. If you took a second to read about the product - you'd see that the bag has a battery built into the case. The panel will charge the bag's battery during the day,
