View Full Version : [03/09/2008] PocketCM Calendar 0.2 - Finger friendly calendar application
I just release the second shot of PocketCM Calendar.
It doesn't do that much yet, but should allow you to browse through your calendar using your finger, add, edit and delete event.
Lot of things are still to come, and lot of things will change, but as always, I choose to share with you the early version of this application.
Added the opportunity to delete events (stay pressed on an event a menu will appear
Added GSync tool, synchronize Windows Mobile Calendar with Google Calendar (two way, do not support recurence) - this is a separate exe
Bug fixes: people crashing at start should now be able to use it
Synchronize with Google Calendar
Just run GSync.exe
Provide user/pass
Click "start" (or refresh)
The list of calendar should appear, select those you want to synchronize
Hit start, that should be it
If you want to add an event to google calendar, simply create one (using PocketCM Calendar or any other app) and give it the right category
http://pocketcm.com/img/calendar/calendar.png
Feature to come:
- More calendar view
- Remove event
- Recurring event support
- Synchronize with Google Calendar
- Better performance
- ...
As this application is build on top of PocketCM Framework, it's fully customizable, however, be patient, the internal will change a lot, so I'm not providing any infomration yet.
as always to get it: www.pocketcm.com

Great!! Along with the google cal sync, could you consider supporting a generic ical import? I have problems trusting google with ALL of my data so I keep my calendar on my own server.

No,
but as I'm using the standard WM calendar database, any synching program that work should do the job.

Tene, do you read my mind? I'm worried about it.
How do you do to come up always with the program I feel is missing in my Touch?
I use OtO so far as my calendar, but I'm afraid the project is stopped.
I do declare myself your number 1 fan
And, once again, I will donate to support this new "must have"
Keep going!

Just made a small donation, which I hope will give my idea a bit more consideration.
Can you please make a floating box, much like you have one the PCMKeyboard, which list the days appointments a you slide your finger over the day.
http://img145.imageshack.us/img145/3476/calenderdu8.jpg
Secondly, when you tap on the day in the month view, can the app default to adding or editing the appointment.
I dont know if you ever used PalmOS, but their calender had the great feature of letting you add simple appointments directly to the day view.

I feel this is a much more intuitive and useful way to add appointments, and then to click on an edit button to add categories, alarms etc.

Does this program work on WM5? I tried running it on my HTC Prophet running WM5, but get an error message:
The file "Calendar" cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. You might need to reinstall or restore this file.
PocketCM and PocketCM Image viewer works fine on the same device tho.

Hi Tene,
When I start your program... it is not showing the month but :
header.calender.text
Maybe it has something to do with our french (Calendrier) version of WM6?
So maybe it must be for us frenchies:

The floating box is a great, great idea.
The floating box is a great, great idea.
In a classic PC interface, I completely agree, it would be great, but in a "touch interface", I don't think it would work well: how to distinguish between scrolling and showing this status? it would work well when the finger is in the middle down part of the screen, otherwise the feedback would be hidden by your finger.
The main difference is in the fact that you need to press in order to produce something on a touch interface. On a desktop pc, there are two different thing: moving the mouse, and pressing it.
Hi Tene,
When I start your program... it is not showing the month but :
header.calender.text
Don't worry about this kind of issue, it's related to the way pocketcm framework work, for those who know pocketcm's theming, they already know they can put a settings.ini file containing "header.calendar.text=TOTO" to replace this label with TOTO. But again, it's the very first release, if I were you I wouldn't waste my time on such detail, the main aspect that need testing:
- Does it work on your device
- Do you see all your appointment
- Are the performance correct (for instance month scrolling is a bit too slow on my device).
- Does it crash.
The color, image, skin, layout, text and other cosmetic stuff are not primary concern for now, it's important, but I prefer to focus on making something stable and usable first... and I clearly don't want to make a very nice, localized, beautiful calendar, that lack some basic feature.

Don't see why you think that'd be a problem. Just have it show up when you hold down for 250ms or something. You've done that for numerous other features in PocketCM (holding down on contact to go to edit screen, holding down on SMS to mark as read, etc.) and Keyboard (hold down on a key brings up a number of other selections). So you could hold down on a day, the box would show up, then you could drag your finger around to other days. When you release, the box goes away. That wouldn't affect gestures at all, because you'd have to hold down first. So, swipe scrolls (though I hope this isn't how it's going to stay since I think a horizontal slide would be much better for a calendar program), tap goes to the day screen, and hold shows the box. Not sure why that would be problematic.
As for the feedback being hidden by the finger... meh. I don't think that's a big deal. I can just move my finger if I really can't see it.
In addition, you could have the box show up by default for a couple of seconds when using the D-pad since obviously there would be no gesture issues there.

Great idea - a quick swipe would scroll, and tap and hold would pop up the floating list box, and would then allow you to scroll around the current dates displayed. Single tap could take you to the combination day view/ appointment entry screen (like in PalmOS), with an extra edit screen for more complex functions such as categories, recurrence and alarms.

All that instead of simply one tap that doesn't force you to stay on the screen? I don't see the added value here.

This may be more trouble than it's worth, and if so, just ignore me but I've been looking for a way to sync my calendar on myspace with Google Cal/Outlook, really ANY other calendar out there for quite awhile now. I've googled it to no end and found no solution. I know the myspace calendar is quite weak compared to all the other online calendars, but as a promoter it's the easiest way to keep my friends updated on all my shows and such. If anyone can figure out how to do this, I got $5 on it haha. Anyone else? I'm probably the only myspace user here :-)

All that instead of simply one tap that doesn't force you to stay on the screen? I don't see the added value here.
Imagine the usage scenario. You open the app, its in the month view of the current month. You want to check what you are doing next week. You tap and hod on that row, and slide your finger along the week. Because only a small part of the screen changes (the floating list box) the screen remains uncluttered, and the interface appears elegant and advanced.
You identify a day when you are free at lunch. You tap on that day, that opens up a day view. You tap on the 12:00 to 1:00 slot, the keyboard pop up and you type "Lunch with Jane" and slide back to the calender view. You are not an advanced user, and you dont use categories, or alarms for most of your appointments, so you have saved a lot of taps already by being able to type directly into the day list view. If you wanted to add those you can tap on the edit button, which would bring you to the advanced screen, where you would be able to fine-tune the dates, times, categories, location, recurrence, attendees, invites and all the functionality most of us never use.
The end result is for most operations and for most people a lot of taps are saved, and the interface remains uncluttered and elegant. Also multiple screens create the impression of complexity, and reduces the discoverability of the interface.
BTW, this is how I envision the day view.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/7262/calender2sz4.jpg
Notice the lack of a "New" button. Just tapping and holding on a line would pop up the keyboard and bring up a cursor to allow you to start entering an appointment.

The added value is that when you hold down to show the box, you could drag it around to all the other days that have appointments instead of tapping one day, going to the day screen, tapping the back button, tapping another day, going to that day screen, tapping back, tapping yet another day, etc. I think the box idea is a much more efficient and elegant solution if you just want to quickly view what's going on on a given day rather than editing it.

I have this up and running on my T-Mobile Wing and it is running fine, the only thing I need to know is how to get my appointment times to show up in regular AM/PM and not military time...it shows up correct in my regular calendar, but in PocketCM calendar is does not. Other then that am waiting for your excellent work on this and can't wait to see how it progresses. Thanks
The added value is that when you hold down to show the box, you could drag it around to all the other days that have appointments instead of tapping one day, going to the day screen, tapping the back button, tapping another day, going to that day screen, tapping back, tapping yet another day, etc.

google synch is not working for me. I was able to properly synch the calender to my google account without any errors (and made sure to the right account), however events showing on the phone calendar are NOT showing up on google. Also events I add on google are not showing on my calendar (ppc), even after repeating the synch several times.
Also if you notice on the calender (I dont know if this was mentioned before) in April for example you have the dates 30, 31 and then 1, 2, 3...

Excellent work. I just installed 0.2 (I have not used google calendar yet). The weird thing is that PCMCal only grabbed the US major holidays from the PDA's calendar. It did not grab any of my appointments. Will the program only grab the appointments from Google calendar?
Other than that, it is going great so far. Keep it up!

Some of the are recurring (you know, b-days, anniversaries, etc), and the others are just regular ones. I only synch with Activesync on my Outlook, I do not use Exchage.
I have an idea, maybe it is because I placed the folder in my SD card. I'll try to move it to programs in the device and see what happens... just a thought.

Hi,
I also think that the box idea is very sexy, but tene is right about the efficiency: you don't need to go back to the month view to see the next day, just slide from right to left and the next day appears.
You're not really thinking ahead though. What if I'm looking at the month and I think, hmm I wonder what I'm doing next tuesday and saturday. With the box, it takes one small motion to slide over to both. With your way, I have to click on tuesday, then finger swipe to wednesday, then thursday, then friday, then saturday. The box is far more efficient.
Tene,
I sync with our work server using Intellisync, all appointments show except for the ones that are recurring, hope this helps
Same here Tene, but major part is that it now works on my 6700. Thank you, great app.
Is their a way of switching to the next year or do I need to scroll through the months until the next year?
Edit: I don't see the year anywhere and when I click on a date the day, month and date show but no year as well.
Edit2: When I scroll to a Shorter Month and Day the year shows, so you may need to reduce the Font or Short form the Day and Month, also would be great if the year was shown beside the Calendar header.

[QUOTE=tene;2004351]In a classic PC interface, I completely agree, it would be great, but in a "touch interface", I don't think it would work well: how to distinguish between scrolling and showing this status? it would work well when the finger is in the middle down part of the screen, otherwise the feedback would be hidden by your finger.
The main difference is in the fact that you need to press in order to produce something on a touch interface. On a desktop pc, there are two different thing: moving the mouse, and pressing it.
It should be fine if I press once and I see the box; I press twice and I see the details of the day. Is not good?.

Tene,
You did a great job (again)! The program runs fine on my Touch with standard Rom. The only problem I have is that the PocketCM SIP doesnot work. The standard SIP works fine. Any idea what the problem could be? I have the same problem entering a sms in PocketCM Contacts I am really looking forward to the developement of this great new app.
I will use the 0.2 version untill there's a update a will share my findings.
I defininetly like the "flow" of the program already. It feels right.
I do like the pop up idea. It works fine already but the pop up will give it a nice touch if you ask me and matches the PocketCM SIPs look.
It is a bit hard to tap on the right place on the screen entering/ editing a appointments subject.
Pushing the black box for a from / to time give timesuggestions in the left of the screen in a very small font. Why not use the whole screen for that?
Keep up you great work!!
Greetings,
Ironic

- can`t find a close button
As in PocketCM Contact for closing an app just tap at the top right end of the screen.

Hi tene,
it's great, to see, that you are working on a calendar.
Since i have my XDA i was searching for a good calendar-app. but none of them where really good.
the best one i found was:
http://www.windsorinterfaces.com/datelens.shtml
do you know this?
i think this zooming feature is great, its a pity, it wasnt developed further.
I think you could do it even better with your knowledge and your framework.
some sugesstions to this:
- the zoomed area (day) is movable by sliding it. (like moving a lens)
- zooming in with click
- zoomig out by double-click
- same perfect search engine like in date-lens (you have to test it!)
- easy entering of appointments in (userdefineable) steps (title <enter> location <enter> date <enter> time<enter> ... done)
i am very excited in seeing this application-development.
best regards

As in PocketCM Contact for closing an app just tap at the top right end of the screen.
i just can close pocket cm with the close/hide button at the right side, buttom. If i press on the top right the SIP Windows appears. Dont know what you mean.
Nothing happens on pressing any corner with this calendar.
I have to press the end/ok Button of the phone.
It should be fine if I press once and I see the box; I press twice and I see the details of the day. Is not good?.
Regards.
Double tapping doesn't work well also, do you know touch interface that work well using double click? it's how imageviewer unzoom, and basically it sucks.
Anyway, you'll see what future version will bring.

I too have long searched for a better date book app. I liked the old palm scheduler better than anything that I have found since but by now there should be way better apps out there. I have tried DateLens and it has great potential but there are some real hangups when I try to use it, the biggest being that I can't make an appointment for this year (2008). The default year it seems is 1953 and I can't even change it by manually entering the correct year. This makes this app completely useless in it's current stage of development. I am running a tilt (tytn II) with wm6.1 by the way.
If anyone has had better experiences or knows a way to correct this please let me know.

Hey Tene,
I was hoping to see a calendar by you (or A_C). ;) I am glad to decided to tackle this. I needed another program to theme. :-) To be honest, I have yet found a calendar I enjoy using. On that note, one of the things I find missing in most is a simple way to preview days appointments. I often don't remember what day I have a certain appointment or exactly what I am doing on given days a week or so in the future.
With this in mind, I have to agree with the few pushing the hold and popup request. It is nice to have a fast way to scan through the days to check for an appointment or free time without having to go in order (read consecutive) Just my 2 cents.
Thanks for the GREAT work... Downloading now!!!

Hello!
Verry nice aplication!
But:
On my Orbit II it does not work together with your PCM Keyboard:confused:.
I type in the letters but they do not appear in the box. The suggestion-box (or how do you call it) appears sometimes, but not all letters typed are shown in it.
Other sips work in your application for me as your PCM Keyboard works perfect in other applications on my Orbit II.
I am shure this will be fixed in future release, just wondering weather no one else has this problem...

Do you use PocketCM (the contact app, not the keyboard)? If so, do you have problems typing in SMS messages in it? You might be having the same issue noted here:
http://pocketcm.com/phorum/read.php?15,8892,8965#msg-8965
Try that edit and see if it fixes the problem.

tene,
Just received your email, you are very welcome and I wish I could give more for your amazing work. I just tried calendar 0.2 and what a nice job you have done, I can't wait to see how you can improve this! My question is this, I currently use today agenda, which is a good program, but not what I really want. I want your program with exactly the features you have designed, but as a selectable today "plugin" to go along with rltoday and ultimate launch. Will this be possible in the near future, or will this be a separate application and not selectable as a plugin? This is the only reason I use today agenda, because I can scroll from my today screen to my photodialer, weather, appointments and then program icons and it is perfect for what I do with my phone.

Looking forward to new release...

Hi there Tene,
first off, great programme, is the gsync your writing as well?
I would love to see the possibilty of creating new appointments with default categories, so anything i add defaults to gcal. now i have to type the category and that is a "lot of work".
Is it possible to add an option to gsync to let it "auto-update" every X minutes/hours?
on another note: the speed of calendar read is pretty slow, it takes a quite a few seconds before my calendar items are read after i open the programme.
thanks,
Gijs

unfortunatly i can't see days in which i have appointments.. marked in dots. just shows me an empty calendar. i can see the appointments themselves if i click a day...
and if a dark skin would've been made.. it would be great :)
thank you

tene, its been a while since u updated the calendar app (which is my main calendar that i use).
I had this idea where u have the months display in flow fashion (like the picture viewer you developped) and when chosing a month it gets bigger... does that make any sense?
