Works great on my P4300 (Wizard) with WM6.1 The only thing it is missing is support for storage cards. I can select where I save the files, but all options are on the device. I am a Linux user so this requires an extra step to copy them to the SD card so I can mount it and pull them off. Other than that, it is a great app!

Looks great, but do I need to extract this zip file from a PC? When I try & unzip it from my Tilt (using Resco File Explore '07) it says "Nothing to extract. Selection does not contain any files".
Thanks.

I used built-in compression in Vista to create the zip so maybe that is the problem. You can unzip on the PC and copy to your Tilt.
Thanks for trying it.

I cannot use a listbox on smartphones so not sure how I would implement the task list option. However, I would be glad to do a smartphone version if there is enough people that would use it.
@ Moe5508
Thanks for the kind words.
@ All
I'll have a new version next week that includes Storage cards for the Save folder. In the meantime, note that the box that has the Save folder is open to typing also. You can type a path there without using the browse feature. That should be a temporary fix to allow you to save your captures anywhere on the device.

Post #1 is updated with a new version that supports Storage Cards. I had to do this by brute force. My library woudl only return network folders so to get a storage card to appear in the folder browse it must have a name that starts with Storage Card. That should be the default anyway.
Hope it works for you.

Thanks for testing. I really want CapSure to be the best screen capture so I'll keep improving as long as there is interest. Everyone has been so great to test my app and the kind words are greatly appreciated. I've finally been able to give back to the community and I'm proud of the results.

Not sure why it doesn't appear as recently used but can you just add it as one of the items that always appears in the menu?

I guess I should ask then what everyone's preference is. As a user I have no preference whether I get a CAB or just a ZIP of files thatI can put anywhere I like. Either way it is easy for me to unload an app I don't like because in the case of a ZIP I just delete the folder and it's gone.
I can make a proper CAB installation. Would that be the preference of everyone here?

@Smartphone users
I'm sorry to report that one of the unique features of CapSure would not be available on a Smartphone version. CapSure offers a list of running programs that allows you to specifically select the app to capture. As it stands right now, the library I use to access running apps and bring them to the front for capture will not behave on the Smartphone.
There are many screen capture programs available. So the question is if you could not have the ability to select an app to capture, would you still want a Smartphone version of CapSure?
If there is interest I will proceed with completing the Smartphone version.

Wouldn't they still be able to use CapSure in "quick" and "silent" mode, with a key mapping, whilst on the screen in question?
I'd push forward, but make Smartphone users aware of this current niggle, and the current workaround, until a more elegant solution is available.
After your reminders I find CapSure to be a stellar capture utility. I'm actually quite pleased that after less than two weeks of my first time owning a PPC that I've located a freeware, relatively fast, screen capture utility with very concise and useful amenities.
See ya'.

I hope you can fix it. :/
Couple possibilities:
1) Some devices do nto support certain files types. Which file format have you selected in Settings? Please try JPG. However, the program was written and tested on my Kaiser and I'm able to use all three file types.
2) You do not have the required .NET version. Please see post #1 for requirements.
This is the best I can do without more information, i.e the rest of the error message.

I know XDA posters sometimes have to edit their screen shots before uploading. Sometimes to add captions. And many times to hide sensitive information on their screens such as phone numbers or appointment text.
CapSure has been updated to include a small image editor that addresses these issues. Now you can select any rectangle on the image and obscure the information in that rectangle. You can also add custom captions to your screen shots.
A screen shot taken with CapSure will be ready for upload right from the device.
VGA device users: I have tried to add support for VGA devices but I do not have a device for testing. Please test.

I realize this wasn't necessarily addressed to me, but I'd be greatly interested in hearing your programmatical approach to Mobile applications development.
I for one would love to abandon .NET in lieu of something cleaner -- a C application perhaps?

Hi, am having a bit of a problem. After installing the CAB, I restart my Dopod 818pro running WM5. Hit CapSure v1.07, but get a message saying "Basic4ppc. Error loading program. PlatformNotSupportedExecption"
Any ideas?

I have tried your software with my xda flame (vga, wm05).
Capturing works.
But display of options {settings, browser) does not support well vga (see screen captures below).
I get an error when browsing some files (see capture).
Obscure option obscures what I select, but unfortunately also crop my capture to the selection.
(Sorry I was obliged to zip my captures because the site found them to big)

Thank you thierryb for testing and reporting on my recent VGA attempts. I will try to address those this weekend.
As for the memory error, I may or may not be able to fix that. I will try. But I will in the least make the program more gracefully handle the error.
I can tell you investeds a lot of time reporting these bugs. I'm very appreciative because you and the others are helping improve CapSure.

@ahpeng73
According to the forum posts for Basic4PPC, these are the suggestions for you:
Again, verify that you have .NETCF 2.0.
Some users have reported that reinstalling .NETCF 2.0 also helps. Make sure you soft reset after the reinstal of .NETCF.
If the above does not work then it sounds like there is a problem with the regional settings. They believe that setting the regional settings to United States fixes this error also. I understand that is not an option for many non-US users.

I have a feature request, and I am not sure how easy or hard it would be. Can you make another improvement to the obscure? I'd like to blend text together, to make it un-readable. Is that possible to implement?
Thanks.
PS, and reason why the format .PNG is not supported?

Here's a thought (recommendation)
I may be in the minority here, but I actually use the system tray on the today screen as a quick launcher. My soft keys are hidden. I attached an image of my today screen that I took with your app :D. Anywho, my thought was to have an option to have an icon in the system tray that will automatically take a screen shot if you click the sys tray icon... after an adjustable time delay. This would be handy for me.
Otherwise, definitely the best screen capture tool I've used. Great work.

I am not oppsed to a tray icon that activates the capture but have you tried the command line functions of CapSure? It allows you to take a screen shot from a shortcut. Using this would basically do what you are asking without taking up and screen space with an icon.
I am uploading a shortcut you can place on your phone that will do it.
If you place this icon in the \windows\start menu folder then it will be in your start menu. Or you could even map a hardware button to the link to accomplish the same thing.
Rename the attachment to capsure.lnk and copy to your phone.

CapSure runs, but the error happens when CapSure (supposedly) should capture my screen, after pressing CapSure Now. I do not know what information to give, so if you need any, please ask.
The folder CapSure has defined as its capture destination does not exist.

Cool. To be honest, that error only became annoying when I used a Centron 2GB microSD that was corrupted apparently.
My capture folder disappeared and CapSure starts yelling at me. LOL.
Sure would have been nice had it yelled at me about the PIM backups that were disappearing. ;)

Sorry to hear about the backups. Still, it's best that CapSure check for the folder prior to saving the image and gracefully handle any problem.

@all:
Command Line Options:
1) shoot - this tells CapSure to take shot(s) using your preconfigured settings. Would work the same as clicking CapSure Now in the program.
2) quick - this tells CapSure to just take one shot of the current screen. The only settings it uses for this is image type, save folder, and file name settings. This setting ignores Timed Capture, Repeat Capture, and Application settings.
3) silent - this is optional but only works when used in conjunction with option 1 or 2 above. This tells CapSure to do either a quick or shoot and then close without displaying the program. Using silent gets you a saved screen shot and CapSure exits from memory.
@FreeMobility: Using silent by itself will not produce any capture. It must be used in combination with one of the other options. You were correct that the command line options were ignoring the file name settings. This is fixed and I am moving on to the other problem posted above. New version coming very soon.

Been fighting with the VGA support since inception. This version is another attempt. The one CAB uploaded to Post #1 should support both QVGA and VGA. I have no VGA device to test it with.
Also, it gracefully handles access problems for folders in the browse and Save To. And I've improved the Blur and Emboss obscures.

Set up your naming scheme, intervals, and even customize what it shoots when you run it via the main interface or even a shortcut.
I currently have it mapped to my camera button with a format of 20080627_062400.jpg capturing the entire screen I see at the moment.
With "silent quick" like ninja -- I see the Windows globe spin a couple of times and then I go about my business knowing my screen shot is nestled safely with its siblings.
Super simple, super easy, super good. 3 supers can't be wrong.

Pretty nice. HOWEVER,
1. on the VGA iPAQ 210 (with built-in CF2.0), it only takes QVGA shots (tested with both JPG and PNG output on both OS and GAPI game screens).
2. it could be very easily made MS Smartphone-compliant. Any plans on this?
3. Wasnt able to save anything on my WM2003 iPAQ 2210 (played with both the target directory name and the format), using the latest CF2 SP.

I tried to create one install that covers QVGA and VGA devices. The way it handles double-pixeling on VGA devices requires .NETCF 2. Guess we're back to 2 CAB files. I'll fix this soon.

Command line options (separated by spaces)
quick - take one capture
shoot - run captures according to above settings
silent - in combination with one of the above closes app after capture(s)
Example: Capture the screen without showing the CapSure window.
CapSure.exe silent quick
Just one question.
How do I use the command line options?

I use a file manager like Total Commander to create a short cut with the command line parameters of my choosing. After you have a shortcut created then you can map that shortcut to any button.

And there are some more things cut at the bottom:
- The main screen. The picture is cut a little bit and there is no info line below it.

- The edit and about windows are also cut at the bottom.

My WM 6.1 system is in Portuguese and some dirs are translated:

"Memory Card"->"Cartão de Memória"
In capsure menu those "starnge chars" like ó and ã display as an odd symbol (when selecting the save folder) and if any folder with those is selected the app just crashes...

I won't add a hardware button option because you can create shortcuts with certain command line options and assign those to a hardware key. Next CAB will install those shortcut files automatically.

I created a copy of the lnk file in Start Menu and edited the shortcut. I have attached the shortcut. I then used Schaps Advanced Config to map the key to the shortcut. That was the easiest way to do it that I could think of but I will be looking for the regkey to use command line rather than shortcut as I now have an extra shortcut in start menu that has to stay there. The shortcut has the following target:

I've checked with a couple of other programmers, one that lives in Portugal. They could not find anything in the code that would cause this problem. I'm using .NET CF which is UTF-8 so the conclusion I got from them was:
One problem than can make this to happen is the user to have a "non-oficial" ROM, with some text stuff mixed....
I gave up on My Oficial Portuguese ROM as it had a lot of small bugs, some of them text characters related...
I now have an English ROM, and even if I use Portuguese accented strings, I have no problem with none of my apps..

@at45: _setup.xml is not needed for PPC CAB files. You can use this tool to analyze all types of CAB files:
http://codeppc.com/telechargements/msceinf/msceinf.htm
@sahoopes: Some minor issues:
1. The preconfigured shortcuts are working only with english OS version. You should better let the CAB file create these shortcuts.
2. It's a little bit irritating that you have to click on the red X to close the big help window. Maybe because it looks like a normal window with a blue background. If you click on OK you are closing the program completely.
Maybe you should better make it like the about window.
3. For the examples in the help file you better should use something like:
capsure.exe quick
4. The "Silent" chapter in the help file contains some typos:
"The silen command..."
"If silen is used..."

I have tried to make this work but can't seem to get it. When I add any of these command lines to a shortcut in the inf file (that is used by CabWiz) I get an error. I googled and I cannot find a way to add a command line parameter to the shortcuts installed by a CAB.
Can anyone explain how to do this?
This is my INF that produces the error:
[Shortcuts]
CapSure,0,capsure.exe,%CE11%
Shoot,0,capsure.exe shoot,%CE1%\%AppName%
I know CabWiz will not create a shortcut for a file not listed in the CopyFiles section of the INF. It thinks "capsure.exe shoot" is the name of the file.

Looks good so far. Thanks for the update!
Now to the shortcut problem:
I've googled a lot and analyzed a lot of CABs. It seems that other CABs are using an extra DLL to execute commands after installing the program. I've found some info here:
http://www.codeproject.com/KB/mobile/setupdll.aspx
But there are always other ways/workarounds:
1. You can add an option to the program to create these special shortcuts. Dotfred is using this variant for his Task Manager:
http://www.dotfred.net/TaskMgr.htm
2. You can remove these shortcuts completely and offer separate ZIP files with these shortcuts. One ZIP file per language. We could help you with this.

I think I like option 1. Drawback is that they would not be removed in an uninstall.
I think this could be easily added to the program to click a button or menu and have these shortcuts created. Question: I think these shortcuts should reaide in the applications folder. Or should they go into the Start Menu?

I would prefer the start menu because that's THE place for shortcuts :)
I'm thinking of a sub menu within the options menu (maybe "Create Shortcuts"). In this sub menu there should be entries for every command combination. Please don't add an option to create all shortcuts at once.
An alternative: You could add a right softkey menu for this at the help window.

First, in CapSure, select the Options menu, then choose Help.
From Help, select the ShortCuts menu and select which shortcut(s) you want to map a button to. Read the help to decide which one you want.
After creating the shortcut(s), go to start menu, settings, personal, buttons. Select which button to map and then choose the shortcut from the drop down list.

Great, that did the trick.
Just one more question though:
I had created multiple shortcuts for individual options (i.e. 3 Shoot options). Therefore I was wondering, is there is any way to delete the shortcuts I am not using?
The image below shows what I mean.

It might be because it's late... or lack of coffee... but how do I use the capsure software? I checked the help, but I'm not sure how to create or use the shortcuts. Thanks and sorry about the basic question.

Anyway to add a camera click sound or some sort of visual flash of the screen to indicate the screen was captured, like screen capture in GIMP or Photoshop? I setup a sequence to take 4 shots every 3 seconds just to see how it works. I ended up with 4 shots of the same thing because I didn't know it was taking the screen captures.
Anyway, cool bit of software.

No. The overhead needed to add this is more than the convenience of starting a messaging application for you.
As far as the sound: I will add a setting to play a wav on screen capture. I include a couple sounds but the program will allow you to attach any wav file to the event so you can make/use your own sounds.

Added sound options today. 4 wav files are included with install but you can choose others.
If you make a wav file, please share it in this thread.

By default, when you launch the software it will display the last capture that took place. A white screen just means there are no previous captures to display. If you had done a capture before, it would show the last capture that was done. Look below the white square on the left is Capture Now and on the right is Options.
Pressing Capture Now will take a screen shot of whatever screen is below the program. Probably the Programs Directory where you launched Capture from. Pressing Options will allow you to browse to a directory where captures exist, edit a capture, configure how you want to perform the capture as well as where you want to store them and the format of the files (under Settings).

Errr.. sorry if im stupid but im still confused.
First, can capsure capture the still image of video playback?
Second, How? can u please explain in step by step.
Third, is there any alternative app that can capture a still image from video playback?
I found the capture part is really hard and un-userfriendly. I understand that capsure will capture whatever screen below it but how can i launch capsure from the unlaunchable area?(such as in album player or any other area where i cant access the windows menu in order to launch capsure)
Sumbody post a guide "Capsure from dummies" please.

yes. choose help from the menu. it describes the possible shortcuts to use. use the program to create the shortcut and then use settings on your phone to assign the button to the shortcut.

Hi.
Firstly thanks for the app!!
Secondly I wonder how to make it work efficiently...
So I usually use this kind of app for GoogleMaps for abroad travels.
What I had in the past (UIQ platform) was utility where I was taking a shot whenever I wanted just pressing a little square displayed onscreen. That was convinient...
Anyway I set CapSure it to shot 10 times for each 30 seconds but apparently I saw no onscreen notification for that - should it be there?? And the phone slooooowend down miserably - should it be like that?
But I apparently also switched orientation so I shouldn't be doing that??
EDIT:
When I set it to shoot a series of captures and hit "CapSure Now" the app is not present on TaskManager. Cannot be stopped than and while it's shooting you cannot enter the app either.
It's a pity the app does not show the capture while taken, it would let it do more things.
I assume it's done by sound but it cannot be done in silent mode than.
I use SE X1.

Ok, I think it's fine just setting this in the popup Menu and just make it shoot each time.
Anyway thanks again!

The wait cursor appears every once in a while if you launch the app from the shortcut (quick, shoot etc.) from the start menu and takes a screen shot. If you launch the actual program and take a screen shot no wait cursor is visible and works like a charm.
One more issue is that if you launch the program in lanDscape mode and when you tap the settings tab, can there be a scroll bar on the right side so that you can scroll down and adjust or view the settings.
Everything is running smoothly on my vga device. Thank you much sir.

i wanted to take a screen capture of a full screen movie on wmp mobile. capsure ran ok, on the thumbnail it did show the correct screen, but when i transfer to pc, it shows a blank screen. i thought because it was because of the movie being played. got out of fullscreen but still the same problem. this time, it shows wmp mobile window ok, but the movie screen was black - even when i paused the movie.
thumbnail shows the screens fine, but on transfer to pc, the pic goes black.
no other problems with other usage.
anybody had this before? is there a fix?
thanks

Hi.
I uninstalled this program however it still shows in the programs list and in remove programs list (this is where I initially removed the app). If I try to open the app it will not open so I thought to reinstall and the install was unsuccessful. I attempted to remove it again w/o any luck. Any idea what I can do to remove this?
edit: it's now removed from the program list but still in the remove programs list.

Yes, I'm seeing the wait cursor in just about every shot.
Edit: I switched from "quick" to "shoot" and set "timed capture in 1 secs" and I haven't seen the wait cursor since.

Just copy the .cab file to your device and run it. It should ask where to install and thats it.

Can't you read? Your question was already answered! Don't try to unzip the CAB file. Copy it to the device and run it (-> try to open it on the device with the file explorer). Then the installation process will start.
It seems that you have to learn a lot of Windows Mobile basics...

anything for smartphones?
I want a version for my Samsung i200, too! :-)
@ oldsap
I cannot use a listbox on smartphones so not sure how I would implement the task list option. However, I would be glad to do a smartphone version if there is enough people that would use it.
To make it smartphone conform simple exchange the listbox with a combobox (I am not shure thats the right name).
I get the following error message on my i200 (WM6.1 Standard): See attachment.

Nevermind, I just needed to do a soft reset. I ran it again and it installed just fine. Works great too! Thanks.

Thank you for developing this app! Since you have ceased development, can you please post the source code in either a zip file, or on an open source site, like CodePlex or SourceForge? Doing so would allow another developer to pick up where you left off without having to reinvent the wheel! :-)
