Hello all. The same people that opened up the Athena device, worked out numerous unlockers for many many devices and are now working on the newly released Polaris device are offering up our team and skills. Only problem is we have no devices to develop on. What we did on the Athena project was raise enough money from donations for 4 devices. There was an overwhelming response and the results were a fully unlocked device and customized ROMs. We also took it a step further and made things possible that were not in the original release of the device. If you guys are interested we can start-up a similar project. Up to you guys, the community.
Of course it's not necessary to start up such a project. I'm sure a developer will eventually purchase a device and do something with it. Time will tell.
Goals of proposed project:
- Unlock device
- Expand WM6 capabilities
- Remove as many limitations on device as possible
- IF possible, add phone and GPS capabilities
- Cooked ROMs

Hey Itxda,
I'm currently trying to get a job around the Shift .. but I have to wait for septembre (if the project is not refused) and in this case, I could make a Master Thesis upon the Shift and many abilities that comes with it.
I'm trying to get the shift the soonest as possible and as soon as I will have it, I will start developing the most I can (Cooked ROMs, Expand WM6 capabilities are the MOST important for me).
I'd love to work with XDA developers but as I'm from Belgium it is not currently easy .. and I don't even know if the Shift is "really" released here.
What can be "nice" should be a collaboration between Shift users and XDA developers. I think that Expand WM6 is the first goal to reach .. and I'm sure that we will find how to get FULL WM6 !

That's basically how we all did it on the Athena Project. Established a few goals, outlined the details then kicked some butt.
The Athena, being the monster she is...now runs more stable, faster and has the latest and greatest. You guys might want to look over at the Athena forum to see how the project did. We started at v1.0. Everyone loved it. Went on to 2.0 and 3.0. Now we're working on 4.0 which is going to be a nice surprise for everyone.
We'll see if anyone else is interested. For now I'm more than happy with my Athena but if people want to move forward we can get things going. Just want to know if it's something that's wanted.
Shift is a nice toy but damn HTC for what they did to the WM side. I have no idea what they were thinking here.

I wish I could just give you the how-to but it's not that simple. HTC did some pretty nasty things within this wonderful device and it'll take some serious hacking around and time to get things unlocked then working. We're not sure what the extent is, yet, to the full capabilities but if the community wants to move forward with the project, we can setup a PayPal account to start the donations and essentially repeat the enormous success accomplished under the Athena project.
Like I said, IF it's even possible...our team can get it done. Just another toy that needs to be shaped into a work of art :D

personally i think the shift is just begging to be hacked! i'm part of the athena project and would help in shift project too.
now that it's revealed how to access \Windows and file explorer, the next step will be creating a virtual USB connection to the vista side (this is possible!), then you can use activesync and can flash roms too, and we (with Olipro) can make hard-SPL and even simunlocker if there is a simlocked version of the shift.
the WM side of course needs a properly cooked rom, put the functionality and apps back and customizations. and of course we need to enable lots of hardware, i'm sure at least part of that can be managed (from SD and wifi to phone and GPS).
i can't wait to start hacking on this but first a device is needed.

nice. i'll happily cook everyone a good custom for for the shift like i did for the athena. watch the athena space for the 4.0 release. u'll definalty want that on ur shift.
from what i seen in the test roms, gps and phone shouldnt be too hard to get back. wifi just might be a bit harder. the antenna and all seem to be there as the test roms have a gps tool

So far all positive feedback but there are hundreds of more users on this forum so we really need to hear back from the community.
We'll be finalizing Athena Project 4.0 soon so the timing is perfect.
The immediate core team members will be:
ltxda (myself of course)
Olipro
Cmonex
PK
Other members will be recruited as the need arises. We would also need two existing forum members with experience and good testing skills for when the ROM is beta quality to help test and work out any kinks.

I setup a link on my signature for the Shift Project.
Remember, we're going to need the entire community to pitch in here to make this as successful as the Athena Project.
If we end up without the necessary donations we will just refund the money from the project. I hope that doesn't happen...never had to do a mass refund before...I wonder how long that would take. LOL
The good thing about this forum it's based on users like me...those that like the high end toys and don't mind playing a bit ;-)

I'm thinking about getting a shift, not now but in the near future. One of the reason's that I'm hesitating is because the shift looks like it could do so much, but the way that htc made the product it kinda blows. (or at least i think it does i haven't been able to play with one yet but i've read every post here). However if the shift can run a full windows mobile and be able to talk to the vista (or xp?) side of things than i would be in. I'll even donate to try and make that happen before i get the device if this project starts to happen. What you guys do here i have no idea how you do it, but i have a big appreciation for it, and i would not want to leach off of you, and your work.

great ! the project seems to attract a lot of people .. I'd like to donate but I have no paypal account .. and I'm trying to find which way I will put money on paypal (have already an online account but on another site and can't transfert to paypal :()
I have an idea... will try tonight or tomorrow !
For the shift price.... you should look at the importer rpawly used (onthegosolution?) it seems to have a good price for that !
if someone has idea of program to do on the shift.. you can put it here .. I don't have a shift but I can contribute by programming.

Not pressuring you but Paypal allows you to donate using credit cards as well and doesn't allow the recipient to see the card number for your protection. Thank you.

Yes. I did see their price and have also ordered from them before. I typically notice that their prices stay high while other vendors drop the price to meet the market expectations though. When the time comes we'll try to give every vendor an opportunity to provide a competitive quote and go with the best offer in price and value.

I wish my future life has already started.... in some years I will come to U.S. to live and to be more effective in the IT world !
Do you program for PPC and Windows or just one of these? If so what code and can you develop small apps and utilities?
I program for both ... I use the .NET framework 2.0 (and compact framework 2.0) and I can even you a lower .NET if there is no need for code that exists only for 2.0 (or more.....).
I have made a program for PPC (for one of my passion) and I am making a program for Windows (in the case of my thesis in engineering).
Both programs are "real programs" .. but while being student I have had to program many many many things...
I'd love to make "interesting" applications .. and the idea I have for summer holidays is to make a windows application that can create CUSTOM rom easily (choosing keyboard application, keyboard skin, windows mobile skin, windows mobile version, language, base rom, etc.....)
I have also cooked many roms for my PPC (HTC TOUCH) and I love the mobile world.

Got two new donations and the main project thread has been updated.
On behalf of the core team and YOU, the community, thank you for the donations. Yes I already donated as well, even though I don't have a device and am going to be working on it :) we're all in this together people.
We've got a ways to go. If everyone in the community would pitch in a little it would make things easier for the ones donating the larger amounts.
FYI, for the Athena Project, I donated over $350+. That's fine because I can but if all others would have donated just $5, it would have distributed the burden better. We'll see how this community does.

Hi,
Just registered to the xda-dev forum because I am looking at buying an HTC Shift (as soon as the German version is available in Germany - I prefer the QWERTZ keyboard with our special letters "äöüß" :))
While I do not necessarily need a full WM6 - it is not a PDA after all - I would like to have some enhancements to SnapVue
Sync contacts and calendar entries with Vista
a browser for quick web sessions
potentially viewers for e-mail attachments (pdf, doc, xls, ppt)
I have read the threads and am impressed with what has alreday been achieved in such a short time since the Shift is available.
An mp3 player would surely be a nice addition if and when the SD card (or even better, the harddisk) should become available.
WiFi access for SnapVue would also be nice, no need to use expensive 3G when at home (At least in the beginning I'll stick with a limited data volume plan).
However, I do not want to get rid of SnapVue completely and all modifications should be doable in a way that allows going back to the original.
As I do not want to "brick" my new toy, I'll be really careful when I install any changes. ;)
To support the development efforts, I made a small donation.

I agree with your proposed goals. The core goals are inline with what you state and we also want to crack this baby open and basically unlock any functionality that`s been restricted. We need to make sure that the device can do what the price "says" it should do, period..and maybe more.

What do you mean by "unlocking"? Are you talking about SIM lock? I don't think that there are any Shifts around that are SIM locked, each device out in the wild should work with any SIM from any provider.

Carrier subsidized phones are often enough not really cheaper compared to the same phones bought from a (reasonable) retailer. It just looks like it.
Usually you pay for the phone with a higher base rate (or higher usage fees) in your contract that if you go for a contract without a subsidized phone.
So while the subsidy works in your favor if you are a little short on cash at the moment when you are buying the phone and signing a new contract (or extending an existing one), in the long run you often enough end up paying even more for the phone than it is worth.
And if you want a more sophisticated phone, you often enough have to sign up for a very expensive contract (a friendly hello to all the iPhone owners :D) which most people really do not need.

If we're talking about full price (approx $1650 USD) plus shipping an approximate $600-$700. This is approx. BUT, I'm talking to a couple of vendors that are trying to work something out for us. I want to see if they can help before jumping the gun on this and making a hasty purchase.
New Total $1,098.00 USD after paypal fees as of 03.24.08am(mid-day)
So we would have to make up the diff...if purchasing a device at full cost. I want to wait a little and see what the commercial community can do for our community. I know we help them sell a hell of a lot more devices by doing what we do so I want to wait a little and see what they have to offer. If we unlock the Shift, many many more buyers will start placing orders, etc. I already know at least 10 people that didn't order the Shift because of the limitations but have told me they would place orders as soon as we do what we need to do. That's a small percentage of people from my immediate circle...who knows how many more have this same attitude...so this project will hopefully mean nice sales for vendors as well.

Ok, good luck with your vendor talks then, i guess there should be at least one that sees the added value behind this community work for the sales potential. I did my third donation now. Looking forward desperately for the SD

Thank you all for your donations.
I noticed that there are a few thousand views, etc. of the posts.
As with the Athena Project, I hope that the few don't take it upon themselves to carry the project financially. If everyone pitches in a little, it'll make things better for the entire community.
The reason I post this is because I "invested" over $450 of my own money on the Athena Project to help make things happen. I know something about the few carrying the weight.
Just wanted to say, if there are some people holding back because they thought the project would experience lack of interest...well, people are interested and we're close to the first device. If you can give please help your fellow members, if not, sit back and enjoy the results as we continue to release files. To see what's already been accomplished please check the official project thread. :)
Please don't take this as begging for a device nor your money. It's simply my comments on the process based on current and previous experience. :)

As I just saw in the "Project Donation" thread, you are almost there with the donations and should have enough money to buy the first device (even without special discounts from vendors).
I am just now wondering: What is going to be the first device the project will be going for?
The US only version (X9000 with EVDO)
The "global" version (X9500 with GSM/HSDPA)
There seem to be some differences and not all developments may work well on both devices.
As you can see from the little flag in the upper right corner, I would obviously prefer the X9500 to be the first ...

All of the devices we will purchase for this project will be GSM models. GSM, as you all know, is the prominent network and is the network all developers on the team use. Although our primary focus will be GSM, the secondary goal, immediately after developing an unlocker with this first device for GSM models, will be attempting to do the same for the EVDO model. We might need member involvement to pitch in and help but we'll see once we have a final product. We want to use the framework we've already established and finalize it once the device arrives to be able to release the unlocker. Once this is done and we have a final "product" for the GSM models, we're hoping it won't be too difficult to adapt it for the EVDO models.
We are working on ordering the first device sometime this week. In working with different vendors, there has been one vendor that has been aggressive about helping our team and providing lower cost units. We're attempting to finalize negotiations and place an order soon. If all goes well, I might post the vendors name...and if they don't disagree. They have not asked us to do anything like post their name, promote their company, etc. which is, for me a great thing, they are wanting to just help the community any way they can. We'll see how it goes.

Salutations from Romania. I bought a shift, it's supposed to arrive to me in about one week. I can also support the developement by anything that can be done by having a shift and the desire to mess with it pretty seriously. I have extended knowledge about pda/laptop hardware and I could provide some details about the shift dissasembly or making various tasks that require the shift to be dissasembled. If you encounter hardware problems I will be glad to assist once my shift comes and I am able to figure out it's complete hardware specifications.
I'll try to donate as soon as I sort the paypall problem here in Romania. They seem pretty reluctant in working with this country, althrough they state that the service is available here.
Ah yes, I'll try to figure out some sort a way to extract drivers for vista (hopefully xp someday) or in general to mess with the vista side of the device.

Hello! Glad you're on board and part of the community.
As for hardware, I would say the primary goals are (others are welcome to correct me or add to this list but keep in mind that the core development team will focus on software based items not direct hardware "modding"):
- Upgrade Hard Drive (someone told me there is a 160gb HD for this baby)
- Upgrade RAM (i hear there are problems finding a 2gb module but there's hope)
- Not really hardware but over clock processor (there are other devices with similar CPU or maybe same that have been successfully over clocked. I think there are a few others working to get this done hopefully soon)
Finding or creating pictures of how to disassemble the device would be of great help to the community.
Thank you for your support and good luck with Paypal there.

I'll try to get some detaliated knoledge about the processor cooling system and it's capability to take a larger amount of heat generated by a overcloaked processor. By my current knoledge, overcloaking the shift's processor shoudn't be a problem, I also saw similar processors running at 1ghz. I'm sure the processor can take even more but that will require people to dissasemble the shift and make some serious modifications, not likely to ever happen with most people.
Due to the fact that most people just bought the shift or ar planning to buy one, this means that most of them got their devices in warranty and aren't planning to dissasemble them (and void that warranty) very soon. I'll try to focus on getting the shift to run "cooked" versions of vista or hopefully get or adapt drivers for XP.
I'm in the process of making a compatible credit card in order to be processed by paypall, it should be ready in 2 weeks.

Sounds great. Would you mind focusing on the XP drivers as opposed to having a modified or customized Vista image? Also, if you manage to get XP drivers sorted maybe creating an image with XP and the necessary drivers for the community? Maybe work on the Vista afterwards since that will be less time consuming? If anyone has a difference of opinion for this please let us know...if you don't agree
As for hardware mods, I agree with you. IMHO I think basic overclocking with existing components should be the focus. I also heard about the 1GHz milestone and although it would tag the battery pretty hard, I figure why not.
Another thing I was just reminded of in this discussion is trying to create a way to be able to turn off WM altogether to help with battery drain. Someone mentioned somewhere on the forum and I need to add this to the goal list on the official thread.

One question - since battery life seems to be people's main concern, any thoughts about figuring out ways to UNDERclock the processor to save battery juice? I know that won't help much if you're watching videos, but for basic job-type stuff (writing emails, memos, a little Excel, etc.), is there opportunity for benefit there?
Also, as a US resident, I heartily applaud your decision to focus on the GSM version, not the CDMA. There's no way I'll be buying that hacked up monstrosity, I'll stick to getting an imported GSM version. That is, once:
- bluetooth, wifi and the SD slot are fully accessible from the WM side
- full xp tablet with drivers OR a larger HDD (or better SSD) is available...
Counting the days, my donation's already in <grin>
Good luck!

undercloacking the processor woun't help much. The ULV intel A series is normally the least concern when talking about battery life. The main consumers are, like always, the display, RF modules and the ram memory bloc (maybe the 950 video chip also). If you undercloack the processor the ram power requirements will actually increase, because of the nature a pc works. The best thing left to do is to go flight mode as often as possible and to reduce the backlight to a lower level.
As soon as my shift arrives I will start working on making it compatible with the xp tpc version. My first point should by enabling the touchscreen operations. If someone has some pictures with the shift dissasembled (good quality or larger photos) please post some links, I may find the touchscreen controller chip and it's code noted there. It will be a good place to start untill I have my own Shift to play with. Also I'll be oppening another topic where others can share experieces about making the shift compatible with xp or dual boot it with vista.

Yeah same here can't wait, I am finding it very hard to wait! I am dying for space on the WM side and I keep looking at my HTC advantage/x7501 wishing the WM side of the shift had kind of functionality.
HTC missed the mark for me on the shift. The shift I wanted was first a WM6 device with a big keyboard and screen for all day use on the go. The second part was the ability to start up vista on same device on the go and at the office with a big monitor and full size keyboard and mouse.
Having both machines a x7501 and a shift right now is killing me! I keep looking back and forth wishing I could smash them together and make what I really want.
That being said I still love the form factor of the shift and I still have high hopes that once a rom is "cooked" by all hard working folks on the project that the shift will very close to what I was hoping for from HTC.
It is very hard to wait the only thing we can do right now is to remind people if they have not donated to the project yet to do so. Till enough project members get the device in their hands we will be waiting.

I think, now, with the WM side liberated, It allredy comes verry close to what I want.
I am verry confident that The Shif Project team will be able to unlock phone gps and bleutooth in the verry near future.
I can only hope that the SD slot is actally harwired to the WM side so they can unlock that too, but I would be willing to open up my shift and solder a 32GB SD card into place in the WM part. (Or maybe I should let someone do tha who actually knows what he is doing ;) )

Hello all,
Wanted to update you guys since some people keep PM'ing Cmonex and seem to be getting a little impatient.
First, let's keep this friendly people. We all use our spare time to get this done.
Second, we ran into an issue ordering the devices. We have enough money in the account to order the first device, for sure. What the issue is now is finding a vendor in the UK that has it in stock AND accepts PayPal. Expansys doesn't have them in stock. Handtec has them in stock BUT they don't accept PayPal. We could order from the US and send to the UK BUT this would mean a customs nightmare and un-necessary cost. The options are that I use my own personal credit card to place the order through Handtec unless one of you guys can help us locate a vendor in the UK, that has the devices in stock and accepts PayPal.
If I use my own personal CC'rd, then i'll have to deal with all the PayPal bullshit. What I mean by this is that the account is limited on what you can transfer unless you add a bank account to it. Well, in good faith and for the project I tried to add my bank account BUT they rejected it because the bank account was already being used on another PayPal account that I actively use. Someone recommended that I move it over to the ShiftProject account but since I actively use it, no can do.
So this leaves us with...we have the money to get the first device so Cmonex can test and release the unlocker but I want to FIRST try to find a vendor with the devices in stock, etc as mentioned above before using my own credit card and then having to deal with all the PayPal bullshit.
Your suggestions and help are welcome and people please don't flood Cmonex's account with requests, etc. She's a helpful person but this is being taken care of an I'm the only one with access to the PayPal account.
In the meanwhile, please see what we as a community can do to pull together and make this happen. I await your help and suggestions.
Now I have to get to work, been busy as hell lately with work and family. Dont' want to stress out about something that is going to happen after we overcome a small obstacle.
:)

yeah but they need to be careful about the language of vista and the keyboard layout !
I didn't try to read through the site but maybe you can help.
- I see they have them in stock which is great.
- Will we have to deal with customs BS if shipped to the UK?
- Do they accept PayPal?
I'm ready to order if they accept PayPal and we don't have to deal with customs crap in the UK.
Let me know ASAP and thanks.
IF I don't respond right away it's because i'm working.

Nah man it's no problem and no offense. It's Monday and already a long week. LOL
We're just working out the order for the first device and it's been a bit hectic trying to get past PayPal's BS and the device availability.
Plus there are a few people that think we can blink our eyes or twiddle our noses and create a ROM.
We appreciate the community's efforts in making the projects happen and we do it for the love of the game. The game can get expensive so we're glad everyone understands that although we will contribute our last dying breath to make it happen, we can't always buy the devices that are necessary. :)

Ok, got the Paypal stuff kinda sorted out. Since one of the major obstacles was that a US account couldn't be used to order a device for EU/UK, I just transferred the necessary funds to Cmonex's PayPal account so she can order from a EU PayPal account for a EU shipping address. She's going to place the order herself.
In the meanwhile, I will be updating the official project thread with the new donations and totals for the Shift Project account.
I'm considering putting in some of my own money to expedite the purchase of the second device for the project in hopes that donations continue to come in for the three remaining devices. At this point i would most likely have to put in around $1000 but that's fine. All in the name of progress. :D
Thank you all for your continued support and donations and helping to keep the project moving forward.
Again, as soon as the first device arrives an unlocker tested then released for the general public. After that we start working on unlocking certain components on the device, etc.
For a current list of goals please refer to the official project thread.

Two HTC Shifts have been ordered for the project. I put in my own money to fill the gap for the second device.
Once devices are received SPL is going to be released first to unlock the WM side of it. This will allow for custom ROMs to be installed to the WM side of the device.
Once I get the device in, we will also be testing Windows XP Tablet Edition on it to see how it handles the touch screen. Maybe a generic driver will take over the touch display and give us what we want. If not at least we tried. I've already acquired a copy of WinXP Tablet Edition and can't wait to give it a try.
Two devices down and a little bit more donations to go to cover the cost. Then we can worry about the last two devices.
Again, thank you all and the project moves on.

Found a nice little freeware program that runs on both Vista and Windows Mobile. Think it might be a good addon for the project. You guys can check it out here and even start using it. The Mobile edition is just a AP scanner that is supposed to connect to the nearest and strongest AP in your area and keep connecting as you move around, if I understood this right.

hey ! sounds really good.
I'd love to help for the project but not enough money right now to buy one
I have a third of the shift price.. and I'm looking for ways to get money (maybe I should give my paypal account and ask for donation ..)
I have been active on the HTC TOUCH on XDA making a French Rom with applications from the DUAL and I have never found anyone more expert than me in Belgium about Windows Mobile, Windows Vista and Windows XP.. I'll be officialy a Civil Engineer in Computing Science in 2 months and I'm used to all windows version (except server ones and tablet pc) and with Linux.
Maybe I could be a great help for the shift project and I could even make applications to help the communities of unexperienced owners of the shift.

I can try everything .. I'm used with the .NET framework for Windows and for Windows Mobile .. I have already made some applications for my own but I can do applications for others.
There can be applications to simplify the way liberation of the shift.. but it seems that the version made by modaco already works well .. BUT maybe we can do even better and easier.
Also an application for cooking, and even for EASY cooking (like a wizard where people would have to choose between languages, default app, etc...) that create "custom" roms.
And maybe some apps for mobile .. a quick launch app like on the iphone, ...
I'm open to every suggestion ... but b4 I have to buy a shift.

Hey .. what about making the Shift working on 5 OS via external HDD or USB KEY ?
I have never tried anything else than installing OS's on an internal HDD .. but I suppose that it is possible to make it work.
There are so many people wanting ot have Linux or XP working .. (both are already working well except the touch screen) but could it be possible to make it run Mac OS X? and even better.. to have the 5 OS's working (Vista, WM, XP, Mac OS X & Linux) and all the time 2 running in real // (WM and one of the 4).
Maybe I'm stupid wanting this running on a HDD.. and maybe it is not possible.. but I was very satisfied when I had Linux, XP & Vista running on the same computer (never needing another computer to work !).
I don't know what will be easy to do, nor what will be complicated.. neither what is impossible.
Is the shift using EFI? I suppose it is a bios as usual... what about that?
@koala996: yes, it's possible. The shift is just a normal X86 computer, you can do with it whatever you can do with other common 'desktop' systems, like for example installing +100 operating systems (http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?p=861282#post861282) if you want :)
And no, it does not have EFI, it has a quite standard AMI BIOS :)

Another thing, I've been working with mine to boot BackTrack3beta. Working on getting the wireless driver fixed up then will post the details. Figured it would be fun to run a nice hacking ISO off of a bootable USB drive. This should give people plenty to play around with at home and on the road while we wait for Cmonex's device. We had problems compiling the drivers on the shift so we're setting up an alternate machine with the same kernel to do the work there then move the modules over to the USB. Once this is working, the hard work should be out of the way and others should be able to do the same. Meanwhile, read up on BackTrack3beta and what it can do. I'm sure some of you wanting to play with Linux on the Shift will find it very interesting if this is the first you've heard of it.

Main project thread updated with new donations. Thank you guys for continuing to give. I wish others would jump in instead of the same people giving. Same thing happened on the Athena Project...since I came in as a community member then later became a project member some of us kept donating over and over to get the project were it needed to be. There were hundreds of people but only a few supported it.
The good part is now, after the release of AP4.0, the fourth version of the ROM for the Athena Project, many have stepped in to donate.
For those that have contributed already, thank you on behalf of the core team and user community.

OK, hardspl is flashed to ltxda's and my shifts. I'm not sure yet if normal RUU works, pof reported it didn't on his shift, so I used alternative way to flash hardspl.
next step is flash a full OS and try GPS and maybe SD (SD still not fully confirmed in SPL, though it has commands for it).
also got some ideas for custom shift apps :)

To add to this, it's good we had two devices to immediately test the SPL work. We noticed differences that will help us get to a stable and safe implementation and have files ready for the community to use. Not sure exactly when but we've started some real world testing now with these two devices.
We're waiting on the rest of the donations to get PK and Olipro their devices so we can continue to work on other goals for the project.

yeah, I don't know why you needed the space after certain commands. those commands all worked for me fine, must be to do with the usb problems you had. we need to test on your device again. :)
as for me it wasn't entirely effortless either, I had to rename the same hardspl file to get it accepted.
wow, what interesting quirks ;)
due to these observed differences I think it would be nice to talk to some of you shift owners here, to test more. if you know how to use mtty, then PM me. (or if you don't know how to use mtty, but are good with computers and commandline, then that's fine too)

thanks for help, testing hardspl with you really helps sort out some glitches to make the process generally usable
anyway we flashed beta rom and GPS works on it. it sees satellites, we didn't wait for lock yet, but that should be ok too ;)
SD is tougher - the OS has the usual sd drivers in it, I checked and sdbus.dll is loaded in memory (the lower level driver) but sdmemory.dll (the higher level driver that lets the OS see the SD and show its files to you) isn't loading regardless of SD inserted or not / SD and wifi disabled in vista or not.
we will probably release a beta version of the hardspl package so users can report how easy it was to get working. so far it seems on some shifts device manager lets you disable usb host easily (this is a requirement to get the process working), and on some you have to use tricks.
best way would be improve sspl to not require this usb host disable/reenable.
also trying to see, for certain people, how to power snapvue off / keep it powered off permanently.
and also usb disabling from custom program to solve power leak problems for some other people.
here's some pics of flashing an OS image via RUU and then the first boot screen and some other pics of bootloader. :D

Also, I'm sure you thought about it, but try making the SD work whith vista turned off, and also with vista on, but SD driver uninstalled or disabled. Shag servive might be of use, but it might also keep the SD busy when it's drivers are loaded. Same with wifi, which might also interfere with SD.

yes ive thought of all that ;)
HTC is confusing... the special MFG SPL from beta rom has SD write commands but they've been disabled. then the shipped SPL that comes on shift has all that removed. and they leave SD drivers in OS.
....
as for the phone, progress report so far: I've flashed patched radios (makes you security unlocked, with AMSS patched too etc)... old beta radio too... just fine. :D but I think there is an AT command to explicitly enable voice. might need more patches in radio though

I'll be following you closely. Made donation already
Got a donation a little while ago and if that was you thank you. We're almost done recovering the cost of device 2 and we can take all future donations towards the purchase of device 3 and 4.
We'll be posting an official update sometime this week with progress made but not released yet. We want to be very careful not to release buggy stuff IF it can be avoided.

Nice... would be great to have a new ROM which is "liberated" from the start. A few suggestions for all the ROM cookers out there :
1 - include realVGA hack
2 - include new splashscreen, or tool to re-flash the bootscreen
3 - include PocketReperion (GPS Tracking, find your shift back)
4 - Include HTC X_button (to close apps using the X)
that's about it :)

Any advances on making voice calls yet?

The voice calling feature is what I consider the Holy Shi(f)t Grail. I understand most people are dying to get SD-Card working, but I just want to hold this humongous device next to my ear and call people while walking down the street, just to see the faces of people...
Voice calling will depend on a lot of stuff, the microphone must be working (it does when replying to an email) ,
one must have a radio ROM that's compatible and has phone features
one must prolly fiddle a LOT with .DLL's and other stuff inside

really?? ...hum.. I don't think that you can have the micro and the speakers at the right place to do that ^^

the radio rom part is solved, any patched radio can be flashed and security unlock is done too, just need to fiddle more with dlls and stuff.

Also, do you have normal screen drivers working in your rom? Most game won't work on the standard rom because of the touch driver not properly recognized, or because the screen won't load. Do you work with a fully working 6.1 rom on this aspect?

Hi
is there any news on using the WM/Kaiser GPS functionality in Vista? I found some posts about GPS, but they refer to bluetooth GPS-es. Does this mean that using the integrated GPS on the Vista side is not possible?
should be possible to get the NMEA values from the EC controller, but AFAIK htc has not published anything to do this (as "officially" there is no GPS support) and no one has written a custom tool yet.

No - there is a Shift advertised with the acronym GPS in its title - this isn't actually the same as having GPS! If you read the Expansys forum, I think you'll find that its still doesn't have GPS "out of the box".
IIRC, early Expansys listings for Shift in the UK, also mentioned GPS - presumably they were written up before HTC decided to pull the functionality.

well well well... what's up here ?
I'm working hard to finish my thesis... I spent less time on the forum .. but I don't see so many changes.
Can someone of the Shift Project make a summary of what is working and what is not?
And what about donations? ... it seems not to move a lot.. only 2 devices of the 4.. come on ! I may take the time to make a donation in july and find a solution to give the money.
Keep working hard men and women we are with you !
I don't kwnow what other members of the shift project are working on, but that's what I can confirm from my side:
1. HardSPL working.
2. SSPL working, but not very "User Friendly" yet.
3. SuperCID, SIM & Security Unlocker, working.
4. GPS working on CE only, still not able to get data from the x86 side, but that's possible.
5. Linux working 100%, I've released driver for the touchscreen and utility to enable/disable wifi and bluetooth without needing to boot vista.
6. Cooked ROMs, possible (I have done one for my personal use).

Prof, what's battery life in Linux without booting Vista?
Thanks.
Prof, what's battery life in Linux without booting Vista?
Approximately same as in vista (linux runs on the x86 side), withing 2 and 3 hours depending on the usage, battery & backlight settings.

I've heard that linux was hungrier than XP (and maybe Vista?) about battery life.. what do you think about it ?

thanks for your answers... 100% working ? I have read that the touchscreen drivers were still in beta and were not completely working.. .everything is stable now?

Battery life its around 10-15min. less in Linux than in Vista on my Shift, with the same usage patterns.
I haven't tried the battery life on XP as I don't use it regularly, just installed it for testing.

Yes, the driver will be included in official kernel tree when 2.6.27 opens up :D
