Does anyone know where you can buy the Shift for immediate delivery in the UK or do you have the details of any overseas supplier that is reliable. I have the money to purchase one but cannot find a supplier at the moment.

Hi Einsiedler,
I ordered with Amazon on 2nd December now the site says availability 9. April and in my account the date has been 8. April for weeks now.
I guess we have to wait a little longer. Today there was an offer on Ebay without specifications of the keyboard layout. I asked for it and a little bit later the offer was taken off by Ebay I guess.
And I got an email by Ebay in which they said that a doubtful email was sent to me by the the person I asked for the keyboard specifications.
We must swallow the truth that there ain't any Shifts around in Germany. Geteiltes Leid ist halbes Leid.

By now HTC is well-known for its strange (i.e. non-existent) information policy. But their distributors seem to kid their clients in the same way. My amazon-order already has been postponed a few times after giving me fix dates for delivery. Today I got the same mail as EinSiedler telling me that at the moment they don't know nothing about a forthcoming delivery. At the same time however Amazon changed the availability status of the Shift from "bestellbar" (order now) to "lieferbar ab dem 9. April" (available 9th of april). What is the name of the game they're playing with us?

Maybe I order the normal English version and use tipp-ex on the keyboard.....

Received the same Email this morning - one day after postponing the delivery date to infinity. Quite chaotic.
But hopefully they are right - this time.
BTW: I assume it's the quertz-version. Anyway: Better we learn blind-typing instead of messing around with Tipp-ex. ;)

Hi,
no, I don't think that it is Amazon. I guess it is the information policy of HTC, but it is another question how the distributors handle their cluelessness. Worst of all is Expansys. For months they have been giving out exact dates olny to put them back when the time arrives.
At the moment is says: Verfügbarkeit (availability): ca. 1 Tag. Just for the fun of it have a look what will happen today or tomorrow. What they do is downright disgusting.
I ordered the Shift with Amazon on 2nd December 2007. For weeks now the date in my account is 8th of April. On their site it is 9th of April, supposing that I am lucky I might get it on 11th of April.

Hi,
from Amazon I just got this email:
Wir liefern vorbestellte Artikel so aus, dass Sie sie am
09.04.2008 in Empfang nehmen sollten. Wobei wir die übliche
Transportzeit hier miteinkalkulieren und Ihre Sendung entsprechend
rechtzeitig losschicken.
So, if lucky I'll get it on the 9th next month, but who can trust the month of April funniest of all the months starting with the first.

Hi,
I live in Australia and noticed on expansys AU that the Shift is on there twice, one as HTC Shift http://www.expansys.com.au/p.aspx?i=157607 and the other as HTC Shift X9500 http://www.expansys.com.au/p.aspx?i=165677
All of the specs seem the same except the X9500 has a 40GB hard drive instead of a 30GB and the X9500 is heaps cheaper........
The other thing is Hong Kong sells the X9500 $650 cheaper than the Australian HTC Shift but the language is (Traditional Chinese), what does this mean...... is the operating system chinese only or is the keyboard and everything Chinese??
Does anyone know what is going on here???
Thanks

First link is not good, remove the "and" from the link and it's working again :)
As I can see only the HD is different yes.
I think the Chinese version has another keyboard layout. Maybe also the WM is Chinese and maybe also Vista, but can't tell you this..

Sorry I fixed the first link it had "and" stuck at the end of the address.....
OK, I have found the X9500 in English so the Chinese is no problem now, The HTC Shift in Australia is$2194.95AU and the HTC Shift X9500 in Hong kong with 10GB more is $1511.13AU Thats $683.00 AU difference....... Thats a massive difference for the same device and if you pay less, you get a bigger harddrive...... Something is really strange here.
For that massive saving I am willing to send it back to Hong Kong for Warranty if something goes wrong.
I have been sitting here for the last hour searching the net to see if i can find the difference between the HTC Shift and the HTC Shift X9500 and I can find anything.....
There must be something different to justify the massive price difference of over 30% discount.

I am quite surprised about the device on Expansys Australia and would rather believe that they just have the wrong specs.
For all I know, the HTC Shift comes in two models, both equipped with a 40GB harddisk.
The X9500 is the GSM version sold across the globe (except the US where a lawsuit keeps it from being sold officially). Lokalization happens but only affects keyboard layout and software language
The X9000 is the EVDO version for the US
I can't believe that HTC would set up a "special model" only for Australia with reduced specs at a higher price. Why would they be so stupid?

It would not be the first time they took a strange decision :-)

This morning I noticed that my amazon.de order to be delivered on the 11th could no longer be cancelled. And two minutes ago I got their mail that the Shift is in the mail to be delivered on Monday 31st!!!!!!!
Hint for the still unlucky QWERTZ users: Handit.de got their order, too. They mailed all people who preordered asking if they are still interested. Call handit.de on Monday afternoon, there may be some Shift left over....

for those askin about difference about the shift x9500 and shift.... well there really should be no difference. they are the same shifts. differences just might be the hd and keyboard layouts. the x9500 is just the numbering for the shift. x series means its a high power pc like htc product. the athena is the x7500, x7501, and x7510. those numbers dont mean anything. its like other phones are p4550 etc...

well, there are more difference then that, the sliding mechanism is better on the x9500 (US Version), and the case is different, people who own both have already report that sliding is much better, less bug (they have problems with the shift control in Europe version).

you mean x9000 CDMA version or you mean x9500 GSM version sold in the US?
Has anyone got a clear difference between the two, I have ordered an Australian Shift and I know alot of other people have orders and if we could find out the differences while we still have the option to cancel the orders and order the other one.
Are there any pictures or documentation, or links to web sites that anyone knows about that show the difference???

you mean x9000 CDMA version or you mean x9500 GSM version sold in the US?
let me put it more clear here, there are only two version:
1. Europe and Asia GSM version (HTC SHIFT GSM)
2. US CDMA version (HTC SHIFT CDMA)
x9000 doesn't mean anything, if you know HTC well enough, you know it's just a code for the device, so the two different are indicate by if it's GSM or CDMA.
Basically all device apart from US one are GSM version, which comes out earlier (pass FCC earlier). Please don't consider keyboard layout and language here because apart from that there are 100% no difference between all of them.
Before we move on to smaller difference, the biggest difference of course is the radio. GSM one can not be us in US (CDMA), and CDMA one can not be use in Europe or Asia (HSDPA)
Now US version is more interesting, because the whole FCC issue, they need to release a special version for US, so HTC also got the chance to minor adjust the device, so you will see two noticeable difference:
1. Build Quality is improve, sliding feel more solid.
2. Case is different, you are not suppose to take the shift away from case, it's 'stick' together.
p.s. some user report that the US version run more smoothly and less issue, this could be true again because they have time to adjust it.But since it's down to software so it's hard to tell.
I hope this clears everything.
So the near $700.00 difference between Hong Kong and Australia for the same item is a massive bonus??
If they are the same, why does the X9500 one have a 40GB HD and the Shift in AU have 30GB or do you think this is a mistake, typing error?

I had both release versions (US CDMA and GSM European) and there was no discernible difference in quality between the two and the slider worked the same. Actually the slider was a little tighter on the GSM version-- it's very tight while the US version was a tiny, tiny bit looser. Both are quite well made.
The leather cover is attached via 3 screws on the US version, and these screws run through the same holes that are on the GSM version (they are where the 2 rear rubber feet mount and where there's a rubber plug on the GSM version). The casing itself is the same.

WU5262: I've seen that Boy Genius post about their GSM Shift and was quite surprised, though I don't know if he had the release version. That certainly is quite different from my GSM version in terms of build quality and slider function.
Where it not for the screwed on case on the US version and the CMDA vs. GSM label on an LED indicator, it would be very hard to tell the two I had from each other.

They have the public release GSM version because it's me indicate them where to get it in the first place. I personally don't have two machine side by side to play with but Boy Genius post isn't the only one indicate the build quality difference. I have seen it in other places. And people in Engadget have similar finding too. Also from a few video review on the CDMA version of Shift, it does seems like the sliding is tiny better, i can't do a single hand slide down, but it seems like the CDMA one can do it without problem.
maybe CDMA user can test this out, slide out the keyboard with one hand is fine, but try slide it back while holding Shift at 90 degree (so screen facing you, keyboard facing down), place it on a table and use only one hand to push back the device at right hand corner. I personally can't do it on my GSM shift, it will goes into a lock stage where pushing the left corner is no use, only solution is to push back the slide to fully open again and slide it back by pushing it in the middle point.
Video however shows that CDMA version can do it easily while not pushing in the middle point...
