View Full Version : As promised, "FIXED THE AUDIO ADAPTER PROBLEM"
madman34
12th March 2008, 06:58 PM
Greetings all,
Well here it is as promised, the fix for the dreaded audio adapter not working after upgradeio flash was of ROM. First of all, I upgraded my ROM and radio to DCD's newest 3.0.0 and radio, which fixed my SelectRadio issue where it dropped out, and looked at the RNC and discovered that it was as I suspected a timer value in the radio ROM was tweaked wrong causing the BER to run away and make the PPP session reinitialize very quickly or go dormant all together, but new radio fixed it. Still we had the audio adapter broken after upgrade issue, so here it is and how to fix it:
First, there is no 'electronics that you have to have' in the adapter as advertised. The problem was that a pin is wired differently in the ones that exibit the problem. The fix is as simple as clipping a wire ! Yep, thats right. Ok, with the connector of the adapter pointed at you, the curved part down, you will notice there are 6 pins on the lower edge. Numbered 1 thru 6 from left to right, pin 1 is unused, 2 is the tip of the 3.5mm jack, 3is unused, 4 & 5 are audio ground (sleve), 6 is the ring on the connector. On the stock adapter and the pigtail sound only adapters that do work properly this is how it is. The ones that mess up are a little different in that pin 1 is shorted to 4 & 5 which did not make a difference before, but really seems to upset any ROM based on 6.1. All you have to do is GENTLY cut the adapter and clip the wire going to pin 1 and all is good, no loss of any functio, it even still powers/charges as this is done by pins 1 & 5 on the top row. A tiny odity is that on some adapters the tip and ring are reversed resulting in left and right channels being reversed, but you can fix or ignore that at your leisure. ENJOY !!!!!!!!!!!!
P.S. Maybe a mod would make this easy to find or sticky it ??? I bet many people are wrestling with this easy to fix issue, I know it bugged the stew out of me til I just sat down and figured it out. Thanks for looking at my rant and being patient as I took a long time to follow thru with my promise.

I've read what you posted in both of the adapter threads, and just want to confirm. I have the adapter shown in this link:
http://www.semsons.com/2miusband3st.html
Your fix works on this adapter? I wonder if there is a way to just remove pin 1 from the adapter without having to cut it open. How did you reseal the molded plastic (I assume some sort of glue). Thanks!

Thats the one I am talking about and i was thinking you might just be able to pull the pin but i was worried about damaging the connector.

This fix works also with the HTC adapter that comes with the device.
Don't cut open the adapter, try to cut the pin 1 from outside in.
Thanks!

Pretty ghetto fix....
But I'll have to try it later, because rigging up 2 adapter and having to plug them in, in a certain order is really sucking.

First of all thank you for saving everyone on this forum money, because now we don't have to buy adapters to try and figure this out.
I spent months without being able to use the adapter and finally broke down and downgraded to the original 2.17 ROM.
Now, I can finally use the adapter again and can't believe that it was so simple all along.
I can't thank you enough.
This modification of the adapter works - I just confirmed it.

This will be great if I can get it to work. How are you guys removing pin-1? Are you opening the adapter or are you removing from the connector? If your removing from the connector, what are you using?

I took an exacto knife and bent pin 1 up and tried to bend it to get it to break to no avail, so I just bent it up as much as possible and pushed it into the connector hoping it would not short out any other wires, got lucky cause it works now, thanks for the tutorial

:eek:THANK YOU SO MUCH! I just figured it was worth trying this before buying a new one. I used a thread ripper to move pin one around till it was not aligned correctly then i just plugged it into my phone hoping it would break the pin. But it didnt, it bent it way far into the adapter. I thought i was screwed ... but i plugged it in and it works now! THANKS AGAIN!
you are the awesome!:D

This is based off reading madman34's post. I *THINK* this is what you should see when you look at the jack on the PPC6800 and the connector on the audio adapter. Can anyone verify this?

The diagram is spot on and I think pin 3 might be the microphone line, but have not tested this yet.

If that's the case, then I'd assume that pin 1 would be microphone ground. Are there any audio adapters that also provide microphone input? If so, maybe we should warn people not to cut pin 1 if they plan on using the microphone.
Or maybe it's possible that all of the non-working adapters were built to include microphone support, which for some reason isn't working.

Otter, the way you put that it sounds like you did mess with the pin on the phone. Please say that we read this wrong as I meant only to alter the cheap adapter and never the phone.

Is anyone having issues with audio adapters with the new stock rom? I just ordered a 2 in 1 usb/3.5mm adapter from buygpsnow and can't get any audio out of the device. I didn't have the adapter prior to upgrading my rom, so I can't confirm if it would have worked with the old rom.
The device stops playing audio out the speaker when it is plugged in, and the USB part works, but I can't get any audio out of it.
Am I having the same issue as the 6.1 cooked roms?

Did you try the "pre"-fix: With everything unplugged, start your music and make sure it's a constant stream (use a local audio file for best test results, since even a quarter-second loss of a stream will screw this up. Plug the adapter in to the phone, and *then* plug your 'phones in to the adapter. You should be getting sound. If not, then you most likely have a different problem.

OK, I carefully and meticulously moved pin 1, and ONLY pin 1 away from its original position. But in the process, I managed to completely trash pin 3, and messed up pin 2 pretty badly as well. Interesting, as far as I can tell, pin 1 is still where it always was. :D:eek::p
So, who can tell me where I can BUY a new adapter that is wired so that it will work with the Mogul's new software? :)

Bizzare... I swear I had done exactly that at least once, but I just did things in the order you described and voila! Sound!
Thanks so much, you saved me from trying to hack at this thing with an exacto. :)
For the archives - I am using the adapter found here: http://www.buygpsnow.com/Product/2-in-1-Stereo-Audio-and-miniUSB-Multi-Adapter-for-Cingular-8525--T-Mobile-WingDash--Sprint-Mogul--HTC-TyTN-(miniUSB-and-35mm-audio-port)__901.aspx
and it works with the latest stock ROM using the plug-in process described above.
EDIT/UPDATE:
I used it on the way to work today and things were fine until I got a phone call and answered it with my bluetooth headset. The audio did not resume after the call as expected - I had to unplug everything, plug the adapter back in, THEN plug the car adapter back in - less than an ideal thing to be doing at freeway speeds... Also, simply triggering my headset to use Voice Command will kill the audio output AND it won't even recognize my commands.
I've done some searching, but without a whole lot of luck, which is surprising as this seems to be a widely known problem. Could someone point me at any additional info on this issue?
Ideally, I would like to have the mogul playing music through the adapter, then be able to take calls on my headset, and have the sound resume on the adapter - is this possible? Basically, having the bluetooth headset take priority when the headset connection is open, then reverting after a call.
Thanks in advance.
Edit2:
Nevermind - found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=376989
Will probably be moving to the cooked ROM this weekend - thanks for your patience.

Make the "adjustment" to your adapter, I bet it will work. The same thing will happen if you pause a song, or if you have Sirius playing, change channels. The "adjustment" fixed my adapter.

I finally took the time to perform surgery on my adapter this morning and I am happy to say the patient survived!
I used a sewing needle to bend the first pin slightly up, then after removing the battery in my phone, I inserted the adapter which bent the pin down into the socket. After that, I was able to bend the pin around a little with the needle again and a majority of it popped out.
Now I'm able to plug everything into the phone THEN start the music and everything works as expected. I'll test the bluetooth handoffs on my way to work, but I am very excited about the results so far.
Thanks so much for discovering this fix!

Has anyone who has done the surgery on their adapter's Pin 1 tried using a headset with builtin microphone
(a standard cellphone headset) to make sure that it still works? I ask because of the question was posed by drew826 here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2025101&postcount=16) and not wanting to ruin my adapter for that use by removing Pin 1.
Thanks.

wow
in 1984 i was in the 4th grade and discovered that there are 3pin plugs and 2pin plugs
3 pin plugs include a line for stereo L/R and microphone
2 pin plugs include a line for stereo L/R
each of these also include a pin for ground (so they are actually 4pin or 3pin)
you can physically look at the plug and see 2 or 3 bands
THESE ARE STANDARDS FROM AT LEAST THE EARLY 80'S
AND I WOULD SAFELY PRESUME GO BACK INTO THE 50's-60's
if your adapter isn't working its because you have the wrong plug
i'm guessing these adapters are made for 3pin plugs and you simply need the correct plug or a 3-to-2 adapter
if you cut this wire i'm wagering you will never be able to use a hardwired microphone
so at least know what you are losing if doing this modification
i've seen another post on this issue on this site or ppcgeeks or smartphonejunkies...etc
new technology...lol
if there is some kind of other issue (which i would be extremely surprised) then i apologize in advance
these are world standards people

hmmm, what if you just don't plug in the "two stripped" head phone jack all the way in. Kinda just so it doesn't hit the third mic contact?
I'm gonna try it tonight.
I think it's mic on the end, then L then R then ground. But I might be way off:D
if so the adapter mod is a cheap $5 fix.

Never mind my post it doesn't make sense - and doesn't work.
I did the pin thing on my mini-usb to 3.5mm adapter - works great, but yes it indeed does disable the use of the MIC (if you have one on your headset or adapter).
This is the adapter I used ->

Note: I get noise too when I have my charger hooked up too. It's a ground issue with the cig charger and the phone useing two different ground potentials. Get something like this inline to get rid of that (may have to adapt or cut and splice the ends to your liking) but it works--->

these are ALL 3.5mm adapters...which is what we need

so thereby eliminating the problem yet again

i have a quick question/problem. i was carrying around a touch pro 2 for a while. at that time, i used the audio adapter that came with the touch pro, and a cassette to 3.5mm adapter so i could play my mp3 music/pandora through my cars radio. it worked perfectly fine for me. then i switched to my mogul with a stock sprint rom, and i cant get any sound through the adapter even though the phone itself works fine.
WILL THE PIN 1 FIX WORK FOR ME? is there another issue stopping this?
