View Full Version : Full Instructions for getting WM6, RealVGA, Office and IE

tito.golder@hotmail.co.uk

I have written out a full set of instructions for getting WM6, RealVGA, IE and Office on a Shift, which I have tested out today.

All the required files except the Office cab, which I can't seem to upload, are here.

Instructions.txt is the complete set of instructions, for convenience.

An office cab can be found at http://rapidshare.com/files/94010776/jimm98y_office2007.CAB

Be careful with the RealVGA bit if you haven't got an English machine - I have so I couldn't test this bit - I inferred the solution from one of Daniel's posts.

1. Reset SnapVue if you have been hacking it.
- Run Clearstorage.exe (or Settings, Clear Storage)
- Disable Wi-Fi in Vista (Communication Manager)
- Enable Modem

2. Get Access to WM6
- In SnapVue, click Outlook E-mail
- Click Menu,New
- Click Menu,New,Insert Picture
- Where it says "My Pictures", click and navigate to "Windows" directory
- Highlight (using arrow keys) the "Start Menu" directory and copy it (using ctrl-c)
- Navigate into "Settings" directory in "Windows" and paste (ctrl-v). Ignore the calendar error.
- Click Ok and go back to SnapVue.
- Click Settings button and then "Start Menu, Programs, Internet Sharing"
- Click "Connect". The screen will say "Check USB cable.". Switch over to Vista and make sure that you have a network connection.
- Switch back to snapvue and click disconnect.
- Switch back to Vista and open Windows Explorer. From the "Computer" level, keep pressing F5 until you see Pocket_PC.
- Using "Tools, Folder Options" (alt T,O), click on the View tab and make sure that "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" is NOT enabled.
- Copy "RegistryEditor.exe" to "Pocket_PC,"\" directory.
- Still on Vista side, Using "Communication Manager", Click "Advanced Settings" and then "Reset Snapvue". Click OK.
- Switch to snapvue and wait for it to start up. If you miss the warning to allow running "RegistryEditor.exe", don't worry - click setting, Start Menu, Programs, File Explorer, then navigate to Windows, StartUp and run it from there.
- In RegistryEditor.exe, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, Services. Delete the "SnapVue" entry. Click and hold the "SnapVue" entry until the context-sensitive menu appears, then select delete.
- Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command and change the default value to wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete - there is a space after the .exe and before the /nodelete here
- Close RegistryEditor.exe.
- In File Explorer, delete the PKG.exe and BlockTitleBar.exe files from the Windows\StartUp directory.
- Switch back to Vista and reset snapvue from Communications Manager's Advanced Settings.
- Switch back to SnapVue. When it has finished starting up and you have closed RegistryEditor, you will notice that you have the start menu at the top left of the screen.
- Tidy up - reset and delete "Start Menu" from the "Windows, Settings" directory

Pat yourself on the back! You have successfully converted the HTC shift's SnapVue to WM6.

2a. Enable all the hidden "Today" items
- Switch to WM6
- Click "Start Menu (icon at top left of screen), Programs, Internet Sharing"
- Click "Connect". The screen will say "Check USB cable.". Switch over to Vista and make sure that you have a network connection.
If not - go to Vista Connection Manager and stop and start the modem.
- go back to snapview disconnect and then connect again
- switch back to Vista
- Switch back to snapvue and click disconnect.
- Switch back to Vista and open Windows Explorer. From the "Computer" level, keep pressing F5 until you see Pocket_PC.

- In Vista, install and run ceregedit_setup.exe
- Press F1 to connect to WM6
- Use Tools, Unlock Registry to enable the import
- Use Edit, Import to import "today.reg". Ignore any errors.
- Close ceregedit
- Switch to WM6
- In "Start Menu, Settings, Today, Items", pick the today items you want to display.

3. Change the display resolution to 96 dpi
A word of warning - this version of RealVGA is English and does not work very well with non-English systems.
- If you have a non-English version of the Shift, then you will not have a directory called \Windows\StartUp. Before doing the rest of this section, you should create a "StartUp" directory in your Windows directory and copy all of the files from your language equivalent of StartUp.

- Copy "RealVGA_11.CAB" and "ResPack96dpi.ARM.CAB" to "Pocket_PC,"\" directory.
- Switch over to WM6
- From File Explorer (Start Menu, Programs, File Explorer), navigate to the top directory (using Up button as necessary)
- Install RealVGA_11.CAB accepting the security warning
- Install ResPack96dpi.ARM.CAB accepting the security warning and select ok to restart the system
- Run RealVGA from Start Menu, Programs
- Change to 96dpi and press OK and wait while the system restarts
- Tidy up - Using "Start Menu, Settings, System, Remove Programs" remove WM6_RealVGA (its job is done)
- In File Explorer, delete the 2 CAB files.

Pat yourself on the back again! You have successfully made HTC shift's WM6 much more usable.

4. Install Office 6.1
- Copy "office2007.CAB" to "Pocket_PC,"\" directory.
- Switch over to WM6
- From File Explorer (Start Menu, Programs, File Explorer), navigate to the top directory (using Up button as necessary)
- Install office2007.CAB accepting the security warning
- Wait - this is a relatively big install.
- When told to, click OK to restart
- Tidy Up - Start Excel Mobile from "Start Menu, Programs, Office Mobile" and delete all 3 workbooks.
- Start Word Mobile and delete any templates you do not want. You MUST leave one of them (Word Document .docx is the default so you must not delete this until you have changed Word options)
- In File Manager, delete the CAB file.

5. Install Internet Explorer
- Copy the "ie61" directory to the "Pocket_PC,"\","Windows" directory.
- Switch to WM6
- Start File Explorer
- Navigate to Windows, ie61
- Install Certs.cab and then delete the cab file
- Copy all the other files up to the Windows directory - some files cannot be copied. This doesn't seem to be a problem.
- Restart WM6
- Test IE
- Tidy Up - delete the ie61 directory from Windows directory.

That's it! Congratulate yourself on a job well done.

If you've done all the above, you should have 21.43Mb free storage.

Big thanks to Tito for putting this together in a coherent manner, and for all those who have benefited from this info, there is plenty more to come.

Once the Shift Project receive enough donations to purchase a Shift to work on, we are looking at getting access to the SD card, GPS, Custom ROMs and more.

If we have helped you already, a few dollars donation from you would go a long way.

See this thread to donate, and for a running total so far.

Hey Tito great work. One small comment, another solution to the accessing device through Vista is to use the USBTool (detailed in the main Full WM6 or 6.1 on Shift thread). I only say this as I and some others have commented how unstable the Internet Sharing solution can be. So far with USBTool I have had no issues. Best use (cost wise from data package) is to use Internet Sharing first time to copy USBTool over then use that. Only comment to an otherwise top notch walkthrough. Thanks for taking the time to structure it correctly.

NOTE - There is a typo in the above write up, in the Get Access to WM6 section. The line
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command and change the default value to wceload.exe ''%''1 /nodelete
should read
Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Cabfile\Shell\Open\command and change the default value to wceload.exe "%1" /nodelete

Thanks Pantaloonie - I've changed the original post and the instructions.

To get usbtool.exe to work -

Download the attached file, unzip it, and get it into the windows folder on the WinMo side. This may involve removing the .exe extension so you can email it to yourself, then putting the .exe back when you save it into windows.

Then, on WinMo. browse to the windows folder and run usbtool.exe.
You get a white screen with the message "Please plug in cable first".
Click on menu and select 'usb cable in'.
Then go back to Vista and wait for up to one minute.
You should hear the connecting noise, and Windows Mobile Device Centre will connect. You can then sync Vista with WinMo. You should also be able to find WinMo under My Computer, as a mobile device.
Disconnect by going back to WinMo usbtool screen, and select 'usb cable out'.

Hi,

I am trying to follow the instruction:

"- Click "Connect". The screen will say "Check USB cable.". Switch over to Vista and make sure that you have a network connection."

BUT - the Connect button is greyed out, because I have no network connection on the WM side.
How do I create one ? Do I need to have a UMTS sim card to do this ? I don't get it... :-((.
Please give me a hint !

I'd suggest you forget the internet sharing method, and use the usbtool.exe method intead, it's pretty much foolproof.

Pantaloonie,

Thanks for your reply. So, when I understand it correctly there is no way to connect to WM when I don't have a data subscription, at least to mail usbtool to WM.
Am I right ?

Hi Tito,

First I want to thank you and everybody who worked on this tutorial and made our HTC Shift much more usefull.

I followed your instructions step by step except for the connection to Vista where I used the USBtools instead. Everything worked fine and the results are impressive. The only thing that didn't work out for me was the import of the "today.reg" file with ceregedit. I keep getting an 'access denied' error and the import aborts. Do you have any idea how I can get that "today.reg" file into the registry of WM6? If I can get this to work than I think the HTC Shift is the perfect umpc for me.

I discovered also a nice feature: when WM6 is connected to Vista using the USBtools and Vista is connected to the internet using the wireless connection then you can use that connection also in WM6. You can receive your e-mail and surf on the internet in WM6 whilst the phone connection is off.

Thanks again and keep up the great work.

Yes, you will need a data enabled sim to get the initial files onto the Winmo side, no way around that.

'Pocket_PC' is the name of the WM6 device when connected to Vista. I made a partnership and named my device SnapVue. So everywhere Tito refers to 'Pocket_PC' you should replace this with the name of your device. Hope this helps.

Ok, I've looked into this and it seems that ceregedit cannot import the today.reg file.
I managed to import it correctly using SKTools, install it on the WinMo side and use the built in registry editor to import the file.

Thanks, I've installed SKTools now but I cannot find a built in registry editor anywhere?

EDIT: Argh, never mind I found it. It's a separate utility rather than something within SKTools itself. Anyway, the reg file import worked great now, so thanks!

Hi Tito -

Awesome write-up! I don't yet have a Shift, but this success is getting me closer every day. As soon as the HD and SD card are accessible from the WM side, i'm in.

Could you clarify one thing? You describe installing RealVGA onto the Shift, but what does it do? Does it allow you to use WM6 to drive the entire Shift screen (800 x 480), not just a portion of it the way Snapvue does? Please say yes <grin>

Thanks!!

RealVGA allows you to use the same screen real estate (not 800x480, more like 600x480 - this is what others are referring to as the black bars on the side of the screen) at differerent DPI (dots per inch). As a default, the WM side runs at something like 192 DPI which means you can't get much on the screen. With the standard SnapVue lack of apps, this is probably okay although SnapVue looks like a kiddie computer.

Essentially you are seeing a standard landscape WM on a much bigger screen.

RealVGA allows you to set the screen to a different DPI setting, down to 96 DPI, which doesn't change the size of the screen (i.e what WM can physically access), but allows you to get more on it - MUCH MORE!

In apps like IE, Word and Excel, this actually allows you to see much more of your document and allows to to not have to fire up Vista and drain your battery.:D

That would depend on what parts you install. I've installed all the available cabs from the libertate thread (office, IE etc) plus RealVGA and now have 6.19 storage and 20.83 program available.

Would highly recommedn the device BTW, the combnation of WM6 and Vista is suprisingly very good!!

You misunderstand what it is trying to say.

For faster downloads, and not having to wait in queue, you can pay RapidShare for "Premium" access. You can still download for free if you are prepared to wait a little longer.

Any smart guys out there who have managed to solve the mystery of detecting the SD Card with Pocket PC? The internal memory on the HTC Shift is way too small. Can someone help me, I have read this thread and still I can not get the WM to show up in Vista using USBtool. I was able to use Internet sharing to make WM full version and copy everything over from vista including USBTool. I was finding Internet sharing very unreliable as most people are and wanted to use USBTool but it just doesn't seem to work for me. I pasted it into the windows folder and then ran it and pressed "menu/USB_cable_in" and went back to vista and you hear the sound that it is connected and then I noticed the internet then connects up in vista so half seems to be working. But WM doesn't show up in explorer and WMDC doesn't find it.

Please any help....

I now have it working, I had to go into communication Manager in Vista and disconnect the modem, then it worked.

Can someone please explain this to me, I put this in the RUN Command and I get an error saying " This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package excits and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package."

I replaced the Path to with "c" as its on the shift c drive, can someone tell me where I am going wrong?

This is what I typed in Run: msiexec /i "c\OfficeMobile_Licenced_0409_US.msi" /qb

The reason I want to try this way is I have installed the rapid share download of office 2007 twice and I can't get excel to work, word, onenote and powerpoint works fine but excel just will not start and thats the only program I want.....

I found another download for the WMOffice 6.1 and it was single programs which is great because I only want excel. I install it and it says all install fine, but it just will not run, you click on the excel icon and the little icon that spins pops up but then nothing

Anyone have any ideas?

First let me say that even though I am an OUT OF CONTROL gadget freak, I am still very nervous about making any modifications. Had my HTC Shift for about a month now and I saw this thread or another about getting the full WM6 working since the day it arrived, but I was too afraid to try it. Yesterday I printed out the full instructions and this morning I made a pot of coffee, held my breath and .... GREAT BIG PAT ON THE BACK !!! I did it. My computer is up and running .. not the brick I was so worried about ending up with. ANOTHER PAT [ I know it was simple, but I can screw up the simplest projects .. ]

While I was being so careful to follow each step EXACTLY as shown, somewhere I saw an icon of a phone, named 'phone.' I don't remember where that was, because I was too afraid to look .. had a job to do ...

I have only completed the first part. I can now check my hotmail from snap vue, that is nice. But have to figure out how to install office etc .. Since doing the change, I can't seem to find my memory stick in 'computer' any longer. I don't know what that is about .. maybe a re-boot will help. maybe I accidently deleted a driver .. I tried to enable all of the Today Screen things, but it tells me Outlook is not installed ... Not an issue right now, but I wanted to take a minute to thank you geniuses for your work .. if I have a decent ebay weekend, I will send a donation to what is a GREAT cause !! YOU !!

I tried to make the Mobile office work on the German device but it doesn't start none of the apps. Do you have a solution for that?

I personally installed the office at first, but considering the memory limitations, I found it of no much use, unless the SD card can eventually be used without Vista running.

Right now, all I have installed and use is IM+, Resco's internet radio, SiriusWM5, IE, Bejweled ... at least could do IMs, listen to radio and do the ocassional browsing when needed.

Patrick

Even if you totally lock the Snapvue side up, it can be recovered through the Vista side, so go ahead and modify, if you mess it up, get back to us and we'll help you out ;)

It's possible to install XP, but there are no drivers for some of the hardware, the touch screen included, and shagctrl (the Shift control centre) doesn't run.
The dev team will be looking into this, it's near the top of the list.

First let me thank you for this clear en workable hack !!!
Things worked like a charm (however since i already liberated my Shift I used USBTool for the activesync connection)

RealVGA installed just fine and the screen looks great, however when you do a softreset of the WM enviroment you get that pesky pincode screen of the UMTS sim. Somehow that one is garbled, (not clear readable) did you already make an alternative to it, or fix ? or have any clue how i could get one for that security screen ??? in rest things look really great with the RealVGA resolution (DPI)

Kind regards

Well, up until now, I think the project team still haven't released the ROM yet
So, I think we need to wait for them a bit
just be patient guys and believe them, that they will do it

Help,

I only am able to find a file called regedit.exe but after I copy that to the snapvue start up folder and run it, it says regedit is not a valid pocketpc application.. could this be because my shift is not from UK?

Hi, I followed your instruction through to #3 where I must install the realvga files. I downloaded the zip file and extract the files but where is the .cab ext. I dropped the folder in the pocket pc directory but it does the recognise the files. An error stating..cannot open file..run application before running file comes up. Same thing for office 2007 as well. What should I do? Thanks

Hi there!

I tried to unlock using two different methods, but in fact unsuccessfully.

when I try to use the one described above, I can not connect using the internet sharing application (the connect button is grey). Somebody wrote to use usbtool, but i have no idea how to put it into wm6.

As I mentioned I tried to use modaco method but I think they made some restrictions to the e-mail client. It gives me a message the the files are potentially unsafe, therefore it can not save them. I think the same thing would be with *.exe files. I have unchecked the box "warn before navigating to a URL or file that is not on my device" but also no effect.

So any idea how to liberate the htc shift. I must say that they could make full version of WM6, so it could be more useful at the beginning.

From another side: in mail client settings there is an info: "Storage card (not installed)". Is it possible that snapVUE can se some sd cards?

Hello, :D thank you for any help, has been installed correctly with the Real VGA files at 128 dpi and 96 dpi, the only effect is that as you move or change from 192 to 128 or 96, and specifically the SnapVue Comm Manager does not change or Adjusting to the new resolution as it is clipped or incomplete. If there is any solution I am grateful for the help.

Hi,
I am not sure, if I got a solution, but I think I did this: Have a look into the windows folder and look for the file "MSIM.96.dll" and change it to "MSIMDE.96.dll".

Or if you use 128 dpi do it to the file: "MSIM.128.dll" change to "MSIM.128.dll".

As I said, I am not sure if it works. Please let me know.
