View Full Version : Upgrading the HDD

With all of the software hacking in progress I was wondering if anyone has plans to upgrade the internal HDD of the Shift.
I presume there are may other Shift users which think that with an internal HDD of only 40GB, of which is even less usable, the potential is limited.
It would be great, but costly, to upgrade to a 64GB SSD but even a "normal" 120GB hdd such as in the OQO E2 would be a great upgrade.
That way we could put music, movies and more on it without kicking the limits of the disk every time. (Windows needs a lot of empty GB's to properly function so don't even think about filling it to the brim with whatever you think of :P )
Did someone already make the jump?
Or are there any tips/tricks for doing so?
I suppose I could just get a normal laptop hdd of 2.5" (or maybe 1.8") and replace the internal one.

I thought it was an 1.8" and yes, i THINK you can replace it.
I don't know the exact size of it and if it fits. :)

Oh sweet, a 100GB 1.8Inch ATA100 disk.
The price is quite acceptable too, however it would be nice to find a 120GB model :D
Now I just need to break open my Shift......
Edit: Centralpoint.nl seems to be selling the Toshiba MK1011GAH too. (135Euro)

Have you conssidered a Western Digital Passport usb powered slim sleek and up to 250GB i have one for use with my asus eee and i love it..
By the way check out
http://forum.eeeuser.com/
they have released a lot of great software for there 7" device that would be great for the shift like a hot key command thing for moving dialouge boxes that dont fit on the screen see below and also a resoloution hack to upscale it to 1280*1024 despite native resoloution only being 800*400 (this is driver based but a similar driver may be used for the shift) would be worth looking into and maybe sharing on here.. By the way i did not create this programe but have used on my eee i dont have a shift but as it runs vista it should work fine this is the thing for moving dialougue boxes enjoy..

But how safe is it to take the proper screwdriver and open the Shift?
Will it be as simple like removing the bottom plate, removing the disk, inserting a new one and putting back the bottom plate?
Have anyone actually seen disassemble instructions/pictures or whatsoever?

Just do a search on this forum and you will find some pictures of the unit disassembled. There you can see how much effort it takes....

i think that the priority is to upgrade the ram. 1 only gb is very poor.. also hdd is little but the ram...

In order to reach two screws, it seems that you need to remove the two rubber feet covering them. How well will that go without damaging stuff and more important: will you be able to put them back on in a way that they will stay there?

This one is 8mm in height.
The original disk in the Shift is 5mm.
Now the question is: will this 0.3mm difference matter or will it just not fit?

in order to get the rear case open you need to remove the keyboard. The keyboard itself is just placed over there (no screws atached to it) and you will need to bend it's backside (from the battery compartment) in order to pull it out. Once you did that you will see a center screw. Just remove it.
Please check out my dissasembly guide in order to see some photos of this.
Regarding the size of the hard drive, yep you may use double platter hard drives as there is enough place inside. If you find some HDD models please provide some links to them, i'm looking for an upgrade and if i find them in my country i'll try them and post the results. Also don't forget that the shift HDD connector is a GAL type one, not GAH. Any replacement HDD should also be GAL compatible.

Woops, never mind, found it!
I did some digging on the Toshiba site and found this:
http://www.toshibastorage.com/techdocs/MK4009GALTechnicalNotes-RevA.pdf
My read is that the MK8009GAH is interchangable, although 3 mm thicker. Most importantly, it seems to indicate the same connector. Am I missing something? The 8009's are readily available. Perhaps someone who's adept at disassembly would be willing to order an 8009 (from some place with a liberal return policy) and compare?

i can't find this model here in romania to order it and if i buy it from another country i don't think there will be a return policy available... and i have no money at this time :(
However i'm more intrested in the possibility to buy an external 160 gig 1,8 inch hard drive, disassemble it and get the hdd to see if it works with the shift.

The Shift has an ATA-6 HD in it. I contacted Toshiba and Samsung, who make a 160GB 1.8HD and both told me it wouldn't work. The 160GB HD is CEATA and they said it's not compatible. Are they full of crap?
If someone can let me know if this will or will not work for sure, I can order a 160GB immediately and swap them out.
If there is a source with a compatible 160GB HD let me know, I'll order it.
I just don't want to order something and deal with an RMA if I can't confirm it'll work in the Shift.
I haven't yet located a 160gb that I think will work. But I've become increasingly certain the 80gb mk8009gah will fit.

I know 120GB will work as I confirmed this with both Toshiba and Samsung. I would rather go with 160GB and am holding off to see if anyone can find one that will work with Shift. If not then I'll just order the 120GB drive.

I've ordered a MK1011GAH. Hope it will arrive quickly (from USA to France) and so I will let you know.
The MK1011GAH is an ATA-7 interface. Is the ATA-7 backwards compatible with ATA-6?
Again, the largest 1.8" ATA-6 no thicker than 8mm that I've found is the 80gb MK8009GAH. I was never able to find/confirm specs on the 120gb drives mentioned earlier in the post.

As desktop PC hard drives are (3.5"), I suppose it is the case of 1.8 ones, until they have IDE interface (ATA-6 is P-ATA 100 and ATA-7 is P-ATA 133).
Well, I will be able to answer when I receive mine.

I'm quite interested in getting your feedback about this HD upgrade... :p I stillhave some worries regarding those +3 mm... while keeping in mind the positive messages given by Facdemol.
Embedding a 40GB hard disk is definitely a mistake done by HTC, considering we have Vista installed out-of-box, not to mention the Recover Partition...
Waici, could you tell me where did you ordered your unit?

Yup right, 40GB hard disk was a big mistake I think :)
SO, need a feedback from people out there who have already done this
I think Seagate maybe makes a single disc, i.e. 5mm, that is 60gb. I know that still sounds too small to some but it's almost double the current in usuable space.

Hi friends, I bought a Toshiba 120GB ATA-7 ZIF 1.8" 8.0mm height 4200rpm MK1214GAH.
The bios recognises it but I have no chance to clone the master disk.
No DD, no Acronis, no way to make the HPA Dump as the Great Pof wrote (unlikely it didn't work for me).
Any suggest before I try to install a new OS on it?
YannR
16-05-2008, 12:48 AM
Hello Ferrett,
If you have Ghost you may try to make the HPA visible in order to have the backup tool working, following this thread :
How to visible recovery partition (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390003)
Btw, I have been successful in dumping the HPA by using the command line given by Cmonex on the "I need Recovery Partition (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388253)" thread (page 2) :
dd if=/dev/hda of=/mnt/hda1/shift-vista-recovery.bin bs=16384 skip=2244480
Tell us : You're mentionning the BIOS sees the HDD. I'm assuming you have done the replacement already. :)
- Have you been experiencing any issue regarding the +3 mm height?
- Are the original rubbers placed on the HDD perimeter fitting well your 120GB unit?
- and... Are you able to close without forcing the back cover? Any new mechanical constraints?
janstan
16-05-2008, 12:51 AM
do a dump of your recovery partition try searching other threads on how to do this then try doing a recovery boot by pressing fn+f3 to install the default os on the shift. just a thought
Any suggest before I try to install a new OS on it?
As others already suggested, follow the instructions to dump the HPA using linux and 'dd'. The best should be to dump it to a USB pen drive (you'll need at least a 4Gb one). Follow the detailed instructions here:
http://pof.eslack.org/blog/2008/04/22/how-to-dump-and-restore-the-vista-recovery-partition-on-htc-shift/
Then with the 120Gb, you'll need to restore it, that would be the tricky part, because you have to put it exactly on the last 3GiB of unallocated disk space.
On a 40GiB HDD, the exact command is this:
dd if=/media/disk/shift-vista-recovery.bin of=/dev/sda bs=16384 seek=2244480
You'll need to calculate the "seek" number to your new 120 HDD, this number must be calculated like this:
( total_number_of_bytes_in_the_HDD - 3221225472 ) / 16384
Make sure the total number of bytes of the HDD is using binary values (ie: 1Kb == 1024 bytes and not 1000 bytes!).
After writing back the dumped partition, you should be able to restore using Fn+F3.
ferrett1968
16-05-2008, 12:28 PM
I did an fdisk:
disk /dev/hda: 120.0 GB, 120034123776 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 14593 cylynders
Units = cilindri of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes.
So which is the number that must be used to operate the seek?
Thanks for the reply
As the resulting number has decimals using 16384, you should find one with no decimals, so the best would be to use this:
# dd if=shift-vista-recovery.bin of=/dev/sda bs=8192 seek=14259387
The seek is calculated as: (120034123776-3221225472)/8192
Also keep in mind that you should do a 'dmesg' first and see if your hard drive is detected as /dev/sda or /dev/hda... depending on which linux distro you use to restore the HPA.

Should be the exact same size (3.00 Gibibytes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibibyte) == 3.22 Gigabytes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte)), confirmed on Spanish and English UK versions.
If it's bigger that's probably because you have the version with 60-day trial M$ Office.

I wonder if Ferrett needs to "hide" his HPA once it has been written on his 120GB. I mean, Fn+F3 boot procedure expects Recover Data to be "HPA", not only a raw dump of the Recovery partition.
This is, by default, true for the provided 40GB, but not for a brand new 120GB HDD. If I'm right, ICC.EXE may be needed to reduce 120GB HDD available capacity by minus 3.2GB...
Pof, what do you think?
If I'm right, ICC.EXE may be needed to reduce 120GB HDD available capacity by minus 3.2GB...
Pof, what do you think?
Good point! I am not sure if Fn+F3 will be able to recover if the 3GiB space is not marked as HPA, but probably it needs to be marked as you say.
Follow the instructions in riki0081's post here to mark it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=390003
YannR
17-05-2008, 12:16 AM
Indeed, Pof...
And from Riki's statement, let's bet it's mandatory to make sure the 120GB HDD is correctly resized to allow HPA activation :
Attention;
Recovery boot (Fn+F3) will be disable after visible hidden partition !
If you want to enable recovery boot, use "ICC" and enter "71826615LBA".(with appropriate size parameter, of course)
Anyway, to Ferrett :
If you don't feel comfortable with booting Linux from an USB Dongle (for the dump procedure), nor playing with ICC.EXE, it would much simpler for you to grab a regular Partition backup tool (Acronis, Ghost,...), backing up your already installed Vista partition (fresh and clean) from the original 40GB HDD and put it back on the 120GB, then expand it at will with Vista Disk Management tool. ;)
My 2 cents... :p
I'm also renewing my previous questions to Ferrett, regarding 120GB HDD hardware implementation :
Tell us : You're mentionning the BIOS sees the HDD. I'm assuming you have done the replacement already.
- Have you been experiencing any issue regarding the +3 mm height?
- Are the original rubbers placed on the HDD perimeter fitting well your 120GB unit?
- and... Are you able to close without forcing the back cover? Any new mechanical constraints?
Why put the HPA on the new drive at all? You'll have an image of your operating partition on external media if you need to recover and the HPA will be on the 40GB in your desk drawer should you ever want to restore to OEM status.
ferrett1968
17-05-2008, 10:33 AM
the answer to the questions if it is possible to install a 3mm higher hdd without forcing is YES.
I also tryed to create a recovery partition on the original HDD with Acronis or DD but it didn't work.
I know it would be easyer but it doesn't seem to work.
I installed a new Vista Business and used the sn on the Battery cover. It works but I DO have problems with all the drivers.
Once all will be fixed in Vista I will partition the HDD to install Linux on it using the WONDERFUL Pof's suggests to make all the periferals work.
If any suggests please write it or at least....
wish me good luck ;-)

Hello Ferrett,
Thanks for your feedback regarding 8mm HDD into Shift casing. Now, I will get one for sure! :) Thank you!
Regarding Recovery Partition : if you're mentionning the HPA one, I agree this is tricky and not so useful (as JEM wrote).
By the way, when comes to the installed Vista partition (the C: one), it shouldn't be a problem to get backed up and put back onto your 120GB HDD. Stating you have a bootable CD/USB Key with Acronis onboard, of course. I wonder what kind of issues you have been encountering here...
Because, as of today, Drivers availability remains a much more difficult problem to solve (meaning than solving the potential issue for extracting Vista partition from the 40GB HDD). Some drivers are just not available aside the original HTC installation and you will have some features not available until we get that solved.
Geting original Vista C: partition onto your new HDD is definitely the way to go. (and forget the HPA one)
Tell us why you haven't been able to succeed here.
ferrett1968
17-05-2008, 01:01 PM
well,
What I did up to now was:
- connect the 120 as usb device to the shift and to clone the disk with Acronis= no bbotable media;
- connect the 120 Gb hdd to another pc and using Acronis trying to recover the bkup partition = no way.
- create a complete DD of the 40 Gb on the 120 presuming to modify the partition dimension later= no way.
now I'm trying to recover an Acronis partition of the original 40 GB booting from an external cd mounting the 120 Gb in the shift as the internal HDD.
The reason why I'm doing it is that both the HDDs mounted as external usb aren't recognized as a NTFS FS. In details a fdisk determinates the presence of a ntfs but isn't able to identify the contents of it.
Hoping it could determinate a particular interaction between BIOS and HDD I'm doing as wrote abive.
Wish me good luck!!!
:-D
YannR
17-05-2008, 01:14 PM
It might be not related to the issue (NTFS partition not fully recognized) but, just to get the whole context here : what are you using as USB<>1.8' HDD adapter?
I'm trying to recover an Acronis partition of the original 40 GB booting from an external cd mounting the 120 Gb in the shift as the internal HDDLet us know but this is the faster and efficient method. :)
Hope you plan to shoot some pictures for us (HDD and some screenshots)! :p
ferrett1968
17-05-2008, 01:23 PM
The solution for me was:
- create a bk image with Acronis installed on the Shift (maybe it could work also if executed from a bootable media) on an external HDD;
- install phisically the new HDD on the Shift;
- booting from an Acronis bootable media restore the image on the HDD that you've installed on the Shift.
P.S.
During the recovery I didn't resize the partition. I will resize it later.
So at the moment seems to work and :
It is possible to upgrade the 40 Gb HDD to a 120 Gb !!!!
Cheers

Hi Everyone,
This is the one of the most exciting threads in this forum so far ! Thanks for all pioneers, I started the upgrade of HDD too. 120GB drive is hopefully arriving this week.
I did the following:
1. Installed Acronis and created a bootable memory stick drive with Acronis on it.
2. Did a Vista initialization ( Fn+ F3 ) and stopped it when the recovery partition was copied back to the visible partition, so I didn't start Vista reinstallation.
3. Made an image of this partition using an external HDD & the Acronis bootable stick, both connected to the 3-port USB hub of my Shift ( I have powered it with a mini USB charger ).
This was resulting in a 12 Gb image, so I can use it in the future as "initial" installation when the new HDD gets corrupted.
4. Installed Vista + SP1 + Windows updates + official Shift patches + Acronis, and made an image again, this time starting Acronis from Vista. It was done much quicker ( within half hour ), and it is a much more convenient starting point than the "initial" bootable partition.
Now I will buy the T5 screw driver and waiting for the HDD delivery :-)).
One more idea: I have ordered a zip-to-IDE connector, so the 40GB 1.8" drive can be inserted in a standard IDE USB housing which I already have.

BE CAREFUL!!!
I've got my MK1011GAH this morning.
There is space to get 8 mm HDD into the Shift but expect to have to remove some rubber and you won't be able to avoid HDD being in direct in contact with the metalic shields of the WM board.
Also, the SIM reader is slightly compressed, making a little harder to insert the SIM.
Adding to that, the back cover will not be able to be in close contact with the part holding the battery area black sticker (approx. 0.5 mm space, visible at the left side of the SIM reader). Nothing dramatic... BUT definitely, replacing a 5 mm height HDD by a 8 mm one into a Shift is a challenge!
Basically, I don't recommend you to do it. Pressure on the WM part, lower vibration protection by removing significant part of the rubber, constraints on the casing...
(By the way, my 100GB HDD is faulty. Asking for RMA... :( )

Hi Everyone,
Finally my 120Gb Toshiba HDD arrived, and this afternoon I took the plonge - replaced the original HDD ! Writing this message already on the freshly installed device :-)).
Following the disassembling instructions I could open the case, and removed the 40 Gb harddisk. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WITH THE LOCK OF THE ZIF CONNECTOR ! I almost broke mine, it is very fragile.
To my biggest surprise, I could put back the rubber protection around the new drive as it was, and - well, with some extra tension - I could place it in the housing, with all screws tightened ! So I didn't remove any of the protections, and I could assemble my Shift. No problem with the SIM-card, I can insert it and remove it as before. I can also move the screen as before, no deformations.
I had a fresh Acronis image, so I reloaded this one booting Acronis from an USB stick. The image was on an USB-HDD. I powered up the USB hub of my Shift, than connected both the USB-stick and the external HDD to it. This part was a piece of cake.
It is an encouraging experience, but I wouldn't advise it to someone with shaking hands. Worst case it still can happen that something will go wrong later, but hey, let's be a bit optimistic !
To demonstrate the HDD change, see the picture below showing the new capacity.

YannR,
I also needed to press the SIM reader and surrounding, but it doesn't seem to be a dangereosly strong pressure. For my feeling the pressure is distributed over the under side surface of the HDD, so hopefully harmless. Unfortunately I didn't take pictures, but my WM part is also working without problem, let's hope it stays like this ;-).

Toshiba have a 5200 rpm drive announced Feb 08 that was supposed to be in production in April, the model is MK1216GSG. Press Release http://www.toshiba.co.jp/about/press/2008_02/pr2601.htm
Samsung have announced a 4200rpm 160GB drive in 2007.
I cannot find either of these drives for sale anywhere in the world! Are they all being gobbled up by Apple and PMPs or what? I really would like to grab one.

I've got my MK1011GAH back. Now, installed into HTC Shift and up and running.
Still... I do not recommend such "upgrade". Mechanical situation is becoming degraded and direct vibrations can be transmitted from back cover, up to WM board via the 8mm HDD. Try to stick with a 5mm height HDD/SSD...

good. i see you guys haave taken the uprgading process one step ahead of what i was doing 1 month ago. that's good. Now people know for sure that you can stuck a 120gb hdd in the shift and it will work.
one more word of advice. a 8mm hdd will fit there and as Yannr said, there are some things to be carefull with. I have one more note to make, underneath the hdd and especially the side with the ribbon connector there is a main connector between the x86 and the wm side. It is fixed by some of the screws that also hold the casing and hdd in place. Be carefull with that one, if you apply to much pressure when you install the hdd, or the hdd itself applies pressure on that zone the contact may become loose and all hell will brake out of the little shift. Happened to me one time. However if you experience the shift making strange things like no display image, random led operations and stuff like that, you will know where to search the problem.
Some of you asked me how to remove the keyboard... and ... i still don't know how to to explain that. Maybe some of you with better english skills will take a try.
One more thing for the guys who had allready opened the shift. Make sure you place the keyboard at a straight angle back in the shift. if it's angled, even slightly the sliding mechanism will scrath it and the letter markings on it.
YannR
15-06-2008, 05:21 PM
Thanks for these additional advices, Facdemol. :)
My main concern is definitely the persistent pressure applied on the SIM card reader as the 8mm Heigh HDD is directly sitting on it. Even if this is not the more fragil area of the WM side, we have now a "new" mechanical link, not really planned by HTC engineers... The Shift now requires extra cautiousness when carried around.
Regarding the keyboard, I would like to remind to some : there is a square hole on the back of the Shift, once the battery cover is removed, near the SIM reader, that you can use to push gently, with a screwer, the back of the keyboard, in order to have a corner liberated from the case. Do that with the display slided out, of course.
It makes things much easier but still the keyboard is very fragil piece of hardware so don't bend it. Be cautious.
But... But... It's so nice to have now enough storage on-board! :D

Hi,
Just for the record: since my HDD upgrade about 3 weeks ago I have my Shift still perfectly working. The only change I have made was that I have made the two inner rubber corners of the HDD thinner by cutting of a small layer of it. This has lowered the pressure on the motherboard, and after that my Shift is still happily working.

 Alex; I will not try to power the USB hub with the Shift Power: Usb needs 5V and Shift Power is 12V.
About the other question: Yes, :D You can Use even 2GB UsB stick to prepare a Image Autorun Utility;
- Find a utility called: "USB Disk Storage Format" (Use google)
- Use the before utility to Format the Stick (in Bootable option).
- If you don´t have the own one, find a Bootable CD by emule or Torrent (I Use Ghost 11 boot cd, but should be the same other utility)
- Copy boot cd to the Stick (even all Hidden)
But NOT:
-overwrite IO.SYS
and
YES delete JO.SYS from USB Drive
But not: delete IO.SYS from USB Drive
From there, you will have that you are looking for.:D You can Do a FULL Hd backup of the SHIFT Hidden and not Hidden Partitions.
Good Luck!

Ok, so it seems that all the 160Gig iPod drives are SATA and not compatible with the Shift, I think the largest PATA IDE drive is 120Gig but I can only find the part number for the 100Gig unit, I will look some more tomorrow.
So the 160Gb drive will definately NOT work in the Shift as the cable types are completely different.
Anyone have a smaller 5.5G ipod they want to upgrade? I have a spare 160G drive available :)

Hi,
Very frustrating,
All went remarkably well, until I wanted to boot from my new drive.
I made a drivesnapshot and managed to get it on my new drive by booting BartPE from a USB drive. However it won't boot from the hdd.
I used another USB drive to boot Ubuntu live and check the hdd, build a partition, format it etc. but it didnot help.
I now have a 120 GB HDD with ALL my vista files on it that I van see from BartPE and/or Ubuntu, but I can't get it to boot :((
I guess I need to "fix" the MBR and/or the bootsector, but I can't find a way to do it. The XP tools don't work, and Vista-tools don't run under XP (BartPE) or Ubuntu...
Any clues anyone?
Update:
I am now trying if VistaPE can help. First have to download a Vista image :( (only 2Mbit download on my new adress :( )

Try to find on the manufacturer HDD web the "format HDD utility", then start again the process; Format the HDD, preparing the partitions as you want BUT DON'T FORGET MARK AS ACTIVE the hdd.
Later on, you should put the vista files.
Other solution: Find the old aplication under MS-DOS, "FDISK". Inside there are a not destructive Option to "Mark the HDD as Init HDD or Bootable" (or some like that). In this way you don't have to re-charge your OS files.
If the problen is the boot, one of this solutions have to run for you.
Good luck.
In 10 days i will recive my HDD and I will see this deeper.

This message you wrote, rememember me, there are some sentences to write to do the same from win console. But if you found a way from GUi,.... ;) ... Who wants a poor and complicated Linux? JAJAJAJAJA
You should remember; the best way to "marry" linux on a Vista HDD is if they have separate partitions. ¿Did you so, my friend?

PD: Remember you can install on the sd slot or USB key a full Madriva, for example, as I did. Less problems for you and if at the end you don´t like....trash it and your system keeps clear.
There are a very very high speed memos like class 6 and 133x. 4GB is enoght....But dont be Mr Scrunch: Better a 8gb memory.
PD2: Easy way to get into the recovery console on Vista: Connecta a usb Cdrom drive, start from it (selecting in bios), and press F8 at start of the load. (I don remember if F8 or F?, but one function Key is). Sorry In this moment I have a Server 2003 in my hands and I can´t try it. (Newbies: F keys function only when pressed + Fn Key .... Hi, Bluesbrothers93;

Hi,
It turned out that I had some SIM-card problems after I switched the HDD.
I put in the original rubber protection. The pressure on the sim-card slot interfered with the locking mechanism, so my shift didn't see the SIM-card.
I replaced the original rubber with some other dampening very thin material. And now I evrything works just fine and the pressure on the casing is much less. Actually, there is almost no pressure.
I just hope the new material won't melt :)

Good point! I am not sure if Fn+F3 will be able to recover if the 3GiB space is not marked as HPA, but probably it needs to be marked as you say.
Follow the instructions in riki0081's post here to mark it:

POF...first let me say THANK YOU for all of your posts...your information on the Shift has been invaluable to me.
A question regarding your method for restoring the recovery partition. My recovery partition became corrupt after a botched install of Ubuntu. I have "Recovery Partition Contents.rar" from aquasesh.
Is there a way to make the files from the Recovery Partition in to the bin file you used in your procedure? Is the bin file a simple ISO image renamed to .bin?

Hello BluesBrothers93,
I did something (not for the shift but it is exactly the same principle) recently : copied my 320Gb to a 500Gb with Alconis True Image and it is very simple and efficient.
I didn't have to install anything on my new hdd, just the "it copy" and I have now exactly the same disk but bigger, and it works perfectly right after the treatment...
See you

Does anyone know if the Toshiba MK2431GAH (http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=StorageSolutions/1.8-inchHardDiskDrives/MKxx31GAxSeries/MKxx31GAxSpecs) is available for purchase anywhere? 240GB on my Shift sounds sweet :)
They also have a 120 GB 5mm disk (MK1231GAL)

There is no reason why it shouldn't work. I'm using the 120GB MK1214GAH 8mm drive without any problems. Any of the MK2431GAH/1231GAL/MK8031GAL should work fine with the shift (as long as you remove some of the rubber shock absorber when you fit an 8mm drive).
I'm currently trying to find a store shipping the 240GB MK2431GAH.
