I can confirm that it doesn't work either unless you're already registered and accepted into the beta team of skyfire. It's pretty much a waste of space :) too bad, i would have really liked to see this puppy in action.

I have been using it and I really like it. It is very fast, even for me in a non 3G environment. The user interface is simple. the only real issue I have is the book marks. I cannot figure out how to delete bookmarks you don't want any more! there is very little in the way of tweaks. I wrote a review with a ton of screen shots here: http://tiltsite.com/2008/03/skyfire-my-initial-impression/

It is pretty quick and looks great, but seems kind of sluggish on my device when viewing videos, which makes it in my opinion no better then opera mini if not able to watch videos smoothly. Anyone else had this problem? Damn HTC, they really need to get their act together and fix graphics acceleration on these devices!

It's looking good, only check this :(
Only available in the US.
Hi Ron,
Thank you for your interest in Skyfire, we do have plans to introduce our product internationally. It’s just going to take us a little time to get there and we ask for your patience.
Here's an update on where we are with the beta:
On February 8th, we began to release the Skyfire beta 0.5 on Windows Mobile phones in the U.S. To give you a sense of our product roadmap, after Windows Mobile, we will support the Symbian platform in the U.S. – starting with Nokia N-Series and E-series phones. It will take us several months before we support both Windows and Symbian phones in the U.S. In that same timeframe, we will be rolling out support for Skyfire in Europe and Asia.
As soon as we support your phone in your region, we will notify you by email. In the meantime, to stay up to date about what’s happening here, you can read our blog. You can also refer to our FAQ.

I forgot when I signed up for the beta but i finally got the email last week. Skyfire is still missing a lot of features. True it does load a lot faster than anthing else I've had on Edge Network.
Some of the most obvious feature missing is the Tabbed Browsing capability. You can only be at one website at a time :( and although it streams mp3s off the website almost flawlessly, Videos play almost as if it were just GIF images (sometimes & depending on the speed it will play a little bit better) well I do have to take into consideration that I have a tilt :o
Even though it has its advantages I still find that Opera Browser is still better than skyfire so far. Maybe in their official releases they will include a lot more features
I emailed Skyfire to check on the status of my invite and got this :
Thanks for your enthusiasm and interest in Skyfire. We cannot specifically tell you when you will be receiving your beta invitation. You are registered in phase 1 of the beta and we will notify you by email and by SMS as soon as there is room for you in the beta program. Please ensure that when you signed up for the beta you entered the mobile phone number you want to download Skyfire on. We need that mobile phone number to notify you when it’s your turn to download. Rest assured, no one in beta 2 will receive their invitation to download until all beta 1 users have been invited into the program.
As reminder, first we are supporting Windows Mobile phones in the U.S. After Windows Mobile, we will support the Symbian platform in the U.S. – starting with Nokia N-Series and E-series phones. This could take a couple of months as we continue development and testing. For all you Blackberry, Palm and Linux users, we hear you, but know the wait will be longer. For our friends in Europe, Asia and around the world, we are working as hard as we can to roll out the service internationally. We ask for just a little patience. We are a small team after all.

I have been using sky fire for s few weeks now. it is very nice. my favorite part is i can stream audio and video over the media net and not have to use the ATT isp (where i cant get MMS and email) so i am very happy with it. it is ok fast and easy to use.

I had this same e-mail, but finally got my text last week. I will agree that it definitely loads up very quick over wifi, haven't tried it on edge because I cancelled my unlimited plan b/c ATT charges an arm and a leg. Like others I have no problem streaming mp3's or videos, but it just isn't smooth when watching videos, someone was exactly right a couple posts up when they said it was like watching a gif. It only runs a few frames a second for me, on youtube, nhl.com, gametrailers.com, etc. Imo, opera mini still takes the cake. I think once (if) the video driver business gets straightened out and v1.0 is released from skyfire, this will be a great browser.

my understanding is that Skyfire renders the page on the server and streams that to the client in a compressed format. It's the same as Opera and that is how they circumvent Flash video issues.
Honestly, I'm not that impressed with Skyfire, but I don't live on my phone. I usually am just checking the weather and email.

Hi there,
I'm from The Netherlands and I signed up for skyfire 2 months ago. Jus filled in a random phonenumber because thay only accept US numbers. Yesterday a got an email and they said they had some problems with the sms link for the beta. So now they send me a download link with the .CAB file. But after a fil in my account name and password it says "Lost connection" please try again later. Does someone has the same problem or a solution for this problem? This could be really cool to have Skyfire already in Europe :D.

Did the same here. Got my email and I'm now running Skyfire here in Asia!! So cool! I love watching youtube videos. I had trouble at first because the connection kept accessing my MMS settings instead of my internet settings internet settings. What I did was I changed the APN on my MMS settings to that of my internet settings and now it's running. Youtube videos are quite choppy though but I just can't get enough of the coolness factor of this browser. BTW, does anyone know if this has tabbed browsing? I never got to explore it much as I'm still busy.

They are hold back because of "the sheer volume of user interest" according to an email I got. Apparently they are having a hard time keeping up with support and beta issue reporting. That's why they broke it up into two betas

"On March 1, we reached critical mass for our immediate beta needs and created two phases for our beta program – Betas 1 and 2. If you signed up between February 8 and March 1, you are in Beta 1. If you signed up after March 1, you are in Beta 2. We created these two groups so we can manage demand, and the only difference between the two is timing. It’s our way to ensure we can sufficiently support everyone as well as leverage all of your feedback to influence a stellar 1.0 product."

I signed up on 1/29 and still have not received any beta links. And when I ask them about it I get the same automated responses. Even though their email says that Beta 1 is for users who signed up starting February 8, they replied to me and corrected that saying that January 28 to March 1 is the Beta 1 date range. So I asked them why I had not heard from them since I signed up on the second day. They replied with the same exact email as before saying it was a first come first serve basis. If that is true then only those who signed up on January 28th have received the Beta...and I know that's not correct.

Yes, it looks and works awesome....
But it won't work for you unless you are a subscribed member to Skyfire. Remember that Skyfire is a Server based service, thus it requires a subscription.
There are other not so bad options like Opera Mini, which is a Server based service but it won't require a subscription.
Cheers!

It doesnt matter anyways, unless you have gotten an sms invite with your username and password you cant use it.
so anyways i got my response from skyfire
We apologize for the wait. When we initially launched Skyfire we had an unexpectedly high number of registrations. We have had to pace ourselves and roll out the beta in a measured approach to manage the demand.
It is still our goal to have the majority of beta 1 users invited to download Skyfire by the end of April and we will continue to send out invitations until all beta 1 users have received their invites, including yourself. All beta 1 users are automatically registered for beta 2 with no additional action required.
Again, we apologize for the wait and appreciate your continued patience, we will get to you very soon!
Thanks,
Skyfire Support

We are pleased to let you know that we just released Skyfire Beta 0.6. If you are currently participating in the Skyfire Beta with release 0.5, you’ll want to upgrade and check out the new features and bug fixes. Please don’t delay upgrading because the current Skyfire Beta releases (0.5 and 0.55) will expire on May 7.
What’s new in the 0.6 release?
We tackled some of your most requested features and bug fixes. Here are the highlights:
* Multi-line text entry (2,000 character limit)
* Auto-complete text entry
* Paste into URL or search
* Ability to delete bookmarks
* Multiple zoom modes for touch screen phones
* Double tap Zoom In and Zoom Out
* Support for custom virtual keyboards (SIP)
* Web search shortcut in softkey menu
* Access to the Windows Mobile Taskbar in softkey menu
* Persistent settings for SmartFit, Mute and Zoom size
* Support for 12-key and 1/2 QWERTY devices
* Password masking
* Backlight usage based on system settings
* OK button sends Skyfire to the background
You can login to your Skyfire account to read the Release Note for 0.6 or access the Quick Start Guide and Online Help.
If you currently have the 0.5 release, here’s how to upgrade
When you launch Skyfire on your phone, you’ll notice the start page has changed and includes a link to “Upgrade Now.” That link takes you to a page to request an SMS with the download link. Just complete the request and you’ll receive the SMS shortly. You will need to exit your current release of Skyfire before you begin the installation process. Please be sure to use the email address you created your Skyfire account with. If you don’t have SMS enabled or you don’t receive the SMS, you can login to your account and download the 0.6 release via your PC.
Do it today — The current Skyfire beta expires on May 7
The 0.5 and 0.55 releases will stop working after May 7. Any cookies and bookmarks in your Skyfire application on April 29 will migrate to your 0.6 Skyfire upgrade. Any bookmarks or cookies created between April 29 and the time that you upgrade to Skyfire 0.6 will be lost. We apologize for the inconvenience. It’s another reason to download today.
For all of you in Beta 1 waiting for your download invite
If you signed up on or before March 1, you are in the Beta 1 program, and your invitation to download is coming. We know we said we would fulfill all of Beta 1 by the end of April, however, it’s going to take us a bit longer to get to everyone. Simultaneous with getting the 0.6 release out the door, we’ve also been moving to our new data center. Due to the immense demand for Skyfire, we’ve had to accelerate our plans for this new data center. It’s well underway to provide the infrastructure and capacity for us to scale rapidly and exponentially. Now, we can put a more finished release, Skyfire 0.6, into the larger beta community. We’ve been building, developing, listening and iterating on your feedback during this very important first few months since releasing the Skyfire beta. We appreciate your patience as we release 0.6 as well as quicken the pace of inviting Beta 1 signs ups to download.
For all of you in Beta 2
If you signed up after March 1, you’re still in the Beta 2 program and nothing has changed. The program will launch this summer and you’ll be notified via email as soon as it’s launched.
Your feedback
Soon, we’ll be officially announcing a new and improved Skyfire support site, including discussion forums. In the meantime, if you have feedback or bugs to report, please email us at feedback@skyfire.com. If you have general questions, please email us at info@skyfire.com.
We appreciate the support and enormous response, not to mention your patience. We look forward to getting Skyfire on your phone, getting you into our forum, and building a vibrant community of Skyfire users. Everything we do directly relates to meeting these goals and making this happen as soon as possible.

Another lame excuse.
I am now completely convinced these guys are full of crap. I suspect they are selling their new list of active US cell phone numbers to fund their weak-ass projects.

quick question to anyone with skyfire. when did you sign up? they said they are doing it on a first come first serve basis. so i want to know what the latest sign up date for someone is that has already been invited. just reply with your date of sign up and if you got it yet, im curious to see if it is indeed random, or if they are actually doing it on a first come first serve basis.
thanks
Q: How can I get Skyfire?
A: If you signed up between January 28 and March 1, 2008, you are in our Skyfire Beta 1 program. Currently, we are extending invites to download on a first signed up, first invited basis. If you signed up after March 1, you are in our Skyfire Beta 2 program. You will be notified when it begins.
Q: I’ve already signed up, when will I get Skyfire?
A:
We're working hard to get as many people into the beta as possible. If you signed up between January 28 and March 1, 2008, you are in our Skyfire Beta 1 program. We will get to everyone signed up in the order you are registered, but initially we have to pace ourselves and roll out the beta in a measured approach to manage the demand.
If you signed up after March 1, you are in our Skyfire Beta 2 program, which will launch this summer.

I was at work and got the invite text last night. This is a cool little browser. It's awesome that you can stream video on it. There are still some bugs. I was trying to log into a website that requested a password and there was not option for the on-screen keyboard to allow input also for some reason I couldn't use the hardware keyboard. Odd... Streaming anime is nice :)
Also it just seems like this browser is just a display on a remote computer and what you see is what is on that remote computer's monitor but you have the ability to manipulate the other computer with what you have. I don't know, that was the impression that I got.

Just be patient you will all get your invites eventually. If everyone got their invites at once it would overload their system. Kind of like when a new video game comes out for xbox live, the system goes down!
I signed up way early and got the invite about a month ago. I signed my girlfriend up a couple hours later than I did and she still hasn't gotten an invite.

Skyfire has more features than OperaMini, but Opera is MUCH faster for general web browsing. Faster to load too. With Skyfire, when you click to zoom in and read something, and it takes 1-2 seconds for the blurry unreadable mess to be legible. Even worse, when you then pan down to read the next paragraph, it takes another 1-2 seconds for the new blurry mess to clear up. With Mini, it's almost instant.

I signed up so long ago I've given up waiting, netfront is free and is just about as close to safari as one can get. As long as you have 12 or more mb free ram it runs smooth and quick. Includes small template page to view entire pages and actual page in background and you can scroll around on template in full view view an article by double tapping on it and bookmark screen is an advanced scroll wheel which shows the page tap the page you want and your in business. I use it on my mogul completely stylus free.

Guys, it will come, don't worry. Trust me I KNOW your frustration. Up until 2 days ago I was saying F- Skyfire too... but they swore in their emails and their blog that they WILL get to everyone. I didn't believe it until a couple days ago. Hang tight guys, it will come!
To those of you who are having other troubles such as being able to use on WiFi only or only getting it to work for one day... I'm not seeing either of these issues with 0.6, so it has to be something with settings either in the app itself or on your phone... keep looking into it and see if you can figure it out, but it definitely SHOULD work on 3g w/o a doubt.
I have an ATT Tilt. Let me know if you guys need to compare any of your settings to mine.

It doesn't seem to be a settings issue with the Lost Network Connection error. I have received 3 releases the first one works great with no problems and is set to expire on May 7th. The second release was the 4489 build which gives out the error of Lost Network Connection, which they new about and sent the new build .6 or 4503 build. I get the same error on that build too. Only when I install the original build am I able to use it. As of yet I haven't received a reply to the issue.

It's the best browser to display complicated websites but I can't use it when I'm not on wifi, my isp allows me unlimited data only on port 80 and I think Skyfire are using another port for identification: can't launch it on 3G+ :( Opera mini is almost as good though.

If you read into the Release Notes they tell you that if you have a high speed connection then it isn't choppy, but if you are using say EDGE then it will be choppy so just hope for some 3G soon.

I just got my beta this AM and I am actually going to say that I am impressed. This one little piece of software is cementing me in place with my Tilt. I still might get an iPhone if they come out for $199 but that would just be a play thing. Anyway, Skyfire, you have to give them credit, they promised a few things and they delievered on them in my opinion. There is work to be done for sure, but its a great browser. I finally don't feel as if I am using a device that needs tons of work arounds to do what I want. I will still use Opera Mini 4.1, cause for quick access to certain sites it can't be beat, but for solid web, I will use Skyfire.
To all those that complain that its crap, give it sometime, for the companies first foray into the mobile browser market, its a fine piece of software.

07-05-2008, 02:06 PM
I got mine yesterday. All in all here are my thoughts.
Pros:
-By far the most fully functional to date. I only found one thing that i wanted to do with it that i couldn't do.
-looks good, pretty easy maneuverability
-on 3G the speed is reasonably fast
Cons:
-On Edge it renders slowly
-each time you shift where you're viewing it has to re-render the picture so there's a delay.
Conclusions: If you are trying to get to web pages that opera mini won't load or PIE won't load b/c of limitations this is a great browser to have on your phone. I will keep it installed at all times for that reason. It renders SIMILARLY to opera mini but much slower. for 90% of web sites i'd still rather use opera mini. but for certain sites/videos i'd say this is a winner.
There is nothing that compares to the functionality of Skyfire but if you don't have WIFI or 3G i would say it is hardly usable. On 3G/Wifi it renders quickly and the re-rendering it does when you shift your focus frame isn't a big issue. Opera mini renders the page and then as you move the view around it stays in focus, doesn't need to refocus. Skyfire missed out on this part. Maybe their future iterations will work this way!

http://gizmodo.com/387686/hands+on-with-windows-mobile-skyfire-browser-beta-06
From Gizmodo.com
Skyfire just got its 0.6 update, bring with it a few more features (listed after the jump) and a bit of compatibility increase that makes it feel more like a real browser than it was even when we saw it at CTIA. The overall idea is the same: Skyfire servers render pages into image form, which then makes it onto your Windows Mobile phone over an internet connection. On our Sprint HTC Mogul, Gizmodo loaded pretty damn fast over EV-DO, and features like Flash actually seemed to work well.
Because the page is like an image, you can pan and scroll around fast and easily, but zooming in and out is a bit clunkier. Typing in a text field requires you to type something on Skyfire's text input, then sending that to Skyfire, then sending the resulting image back to your phone.
Although it touts Flash video, support, watching YouTube videos is still more like a fast slideshow than an actual video—though most of the video quality depends on your connection type and speed. It's no iPhone Safari browser—and probably will never be because of the fact that rendering is done off-phone—but it's a reasonably close approximation for now.
* Multi-line text entry (2,000 character limit)
* Auto-complete text entry

* Ability to delete bookmarks

* Double tap to Zoom In and Zoom Out
* Support for custom virtual keyboards (SIP)
* Web search shortcut in softkey menu
* Access to the Windows Mobile Taskbar in softkey menu
* Persistent settings for SmartFit, Mute and Zoom size
* Support for 12-key and ½ QWERTY devices
* Password masking
* Backlight usage based on system settings

Go to Start, Settings, Connections, and Connections again. If it says MediaNet thats your problem. If so follow these steps. Click on Advanced, Select Networks and make sure the top one is set to My ISP NOT MediaNet or you will get the Lost Connection error. I have e-mailed them on the issue because it doesn't want to automatically connect unless manually set, but it worked fine on the 1st build, so it is just an issue with this build.

Check out the following article. This guy gives a pretty in depth review of the software and explains the following:
"The SkyFire browser needs some improvements, such as being able to view and e-mail URLs. It also needs better battery management, because the browser maintains a persistent connection to the server. It is for this reason that the program has an exit button, recommended to conserve battery power."

I just got my 2nd text from them. Got one a while ago as i signed up when they first announced the beta, but i never downloaded it. today i got the message again so i decided why not. Btw i remember reading somewhere that their privacy policy isn't that strong and it says something about them using your personal information for something other than the testing.. oh well, read through the privacy policy and couldn't find it so i'm giving them a shot.
To be honest with you guys, i'm not impressed at all. The video playback is jerky (ok, so no browser has fixed this issue yet) but other than that, opera 9 (the beta thats leaked) is so much better. It pans, zooms, and renders much faster then skyfire. And for streaming videos, get veveo's Vtap. It plays youtube videos, google, metacafe, everything.
So to all of you that are dying for your invite... take it easy your not missing out. This thing isn't all its hyped up to be.
I just traded my Tilt for an iPhone two days ago, and now I just got the text from skyfire. Figures... But, anybody wanna buy a skyfire beta? :)
Pm me.

Mine doesnt even try to connect, the data connection doesn't even go on. "lost data connection please try again later" exit. I turned data on first then skyfire, same thing. only connect over wifi. I just installed it because I just got the text msg when i signed up in jan. Anyone know what the deal is?
Try changing your primary connection to My ISP if it isn't and see if it works then.

I agree, the video is really choppy and when you scroll to the rest of the page even on 3G you still have to wait for the page to render. SkyFire is not all what its cracked up to be, I guess they have to iron out all the kinks. I also experience the phone getting real warm with more than 5 minutes of use.

The re-rendering when scrolling is the reason i won't use it. The slow video playback is due to the Tilt. One of my friends has the browser on an i-mate 8502 and the video plays smooth like butter.
It is still in Beta, so I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that some things will get better, but as constituted, I won't use it much because it annoys me to have to render the page whenever I scroll.

Well, I'm still waiting for my 1sst invitation... I registered during the Beta 1 period, but never received it; I emailed them last about it, and received in part this response:
We know that we said we would fulfill all of Beta 1 by the end of April, however, it’s going to take us a bit longer to get to everyone. We have been hard at work on Skyfire 0.6 as well as moving to our new data center and building out our infrastructure. Now, we can put a more finished released, Skyfire 0.6, into the larger beta community and we can accelerate the pace of our invitations to download to the Beta 1 community.

have Tmo so I am still on EDGE. It runs fast for general browsing but streamed content is pretty beat. Youtube audio and video is off and Myspace audio skips and even stops.

i registered sometime around feb 12th...maybe the 13th. got invited today!!!
got the email around 4:15, and text message 10 minutes later...
glad its finally here, guess ill be back next if i start having issues.
already noticed the video is choppy, behind the audio, which plays fine.
good luck to everyone who hasnt recieved it yet.
i would try emailing them, just asking politely when you will receive it. play stupid and say something like, "i got an email about a month ago saying that id get my invite by end of april, just wondering when i should be recieving it."
thats waht i did, and i havent seen many people who signed up as late as i did get the invite.

i think like everyone here i'm incredibly pumped when looking at the ability to render complete desktop webpages on the mobile device. it runs the audio from myspace pages, does youtube, and a lot of other sites that PIE, opera mini, and opera mobile simply wont do. the only thing that stinks about this, is HOW SLOW IT IS.
going from page to page, is very very lengthy. and even zooming into a page that has already loaded seems to take a very long time. I think i'm going to be sticking with opera mini 4.1 final release until skyfire gets another update or 2 down the road

I must agree with most everyone here that Skyfire is really cool and a great technological achievement but too bad it's really slow to render.
However, there's no doubt in my mind that it will get better and better along the way, I mean it's still a very early Beta! So in the meantime here you'll find me using Opera Mini Final too!
Keep up the good work Skyfyre Devs!
Cheers,

Received my invite yesterday after being on the list since the first week in Feb. I sent them an e-mail and they followed up with the invite shortly afterwards. I guess I was overlooked. You might give that a shot if you've been waiting awhile.
I installed it on my storage card to save space, and I'm pretty impressed by it so far. I did notice that it had some 1-2 sec rendering delays when scrolling pages. Also, it wouldn't run with 11 MBs free space...freeing up an additional 6 seemed to do the trick. More pros than cons for me, but I'm still testing it.
I've had skyfire almost a week now, and have played with it, and I'm not sure I like it (or trust it).
It actually works by rendering the web pages on their server, and it is basically downloading images of the pages to your phone.
I don't think I would want to use it for any secure sites where you have to enter personal information or usernames/passwords. And yes, it is very slow when video is rendering.
I think I would much prefer a browser that renders on my phone vs on a server.

Sounds like another disappointment. Hope Opera Mobile 9 isn't a let down. I read it should be out in a month or so (first half of '08).

Skyfire is a waste of my time. Youtube videos stream horrible I can't even watch the video. In the demo it looks all crisp, clear, video plays through without lag. This browser sucks. I barely use it, the only time I do is when I want to be reminded on how stupid I was installing it to my phone. I removed it today.

Skyfire is a subscription based service... You need to apply for a username and password. It's free but you have to wait for them (Skyfire) to contact you, unfortunately you have to wait a very long time... (I waited about 3 months).
So if you want to try it out, you'd better hurry up and sign in to the Beta program.

skyfire is great. flash videos are smooth. i received the download email from them not too long ago. only thing i don't like about it is that everytime you scroll around it has to refocus on that area. but since opera 9.5 came out i've been using that. i love the auto focusing feature of opera. so i switch between the two. if i need flash i use skyfire. if not i use opera. both are excellent browsers. once the real opera is out w/flash i'll be using that mostly.

Been playing with it. Overall, I like the presentation of Opera Mini (haven't tried Opera Mobile 9 beta) better. It's got smoother animation/pagenav.
I do still use Skyfire, but only for a few things (such as forums like this). Hulu comes in nicely. The video is a little lagged (to be expected on the Kaiser), but overall, it works.
I'm thinking Opera Mobile w/Flash support will own this though. Unless they can fix the rendering and refocusing annoyances. It's also slow to respond sometimes (page clicks/etc).

Well of course as soon as i bitch i get my account info email. hahah
Its not a bad service at all, havent tried opera 9.5 yet, however besides the slight lag time when zooming in, my skyfire is working great. Being able to play myspace/ any video music i come upon is a great improvement. IF i can admin my e107 site with this its worth gold.
anyway thought i should re-post, they did get back to me just took a looong time. :)

Pretty obvious if you ask me. It seems like they plan you to sign up their "still free" service they will charge you in future for when the user base exceeds a limit.... Boooring. I don't see a real benefit when considering the privacy problem a subscription based proxy system inherits.
