was wondering if anyone could tell me where i could get one of the led units for the flash as mine was used too long by my friend and he killed it. it barely lights up now

Being this an aged device, this led (or something similar) should not be hard to find.
I would begin to look at RS Components catalog, I think that's allied electronics who represents them in the usa.
Having in mind that this is a simple high intensity white led, anything that you could fit in place should be ok, normally these leds work with 3.3V and around 30mA.

There's a technical Manual for the Universal around on the FTP which includes specs and order numbers of replacement parts.
Lookup the specifications there and then google the part number to find a supplier. Worked for me when my antenna socket died.
You might run into problems when trying to buy just one LED however. The hits you get from google this way are mostly manufacturers, and they usually sell LEDs in boxes of 100.000 units only...
But with a little research you might find one that fits at radioshack, Reichelt Elektronik or what ever else is popular in your country
