How and when can i update my device???
Biffert
2nd April 2008, 03:15 PM
How: Via USB ;) ... Ok ok, I think it will be same way we do now with the ROM upgrade utility, but probably packaged in some installer like most of the official upgrades.
When: 6.1 just got announced, its up to HTC and the mobile operators to decide when they release an upgrade.

Hi all,
I just bought a touch 1 gen ... i heard from a friend that it'll take awhile because HTC has a tendency to release it after they have marketed all their new 6.1 loaded devices ... i guess its their marketing strategy :)
meanwhile, can anyone tell me any interesting 6.1 Roms i can look at ... thanks.

Doesn't seem like there's much in the 6.1 upgrade for WM-Pro users though, most changes are in the smartphone version.

I use the customer WM6.1 Pro for HTC Touch, and I like it.. there ar a lot of flavors: lite and full, with more (or less) free ram for othr apps, etc.

Whats the difference(s) between WM6 Pro and WM 6.1 anyway? I've done some reading on it but no where does it really say whats so different. I've even gone and looked at videos of it on youtube. Other then what looks like a new skin theme doesnt look like anything else really and I am sure theres more to it. Do you have finger gestures now built right into HTC home? Like swiping left to get to your schedual and what not? What about the HTC home... is that any different?
Here's what I've gotten so far:
Threaded SMS messages
New Internet Explorer
Runs a little smoother
But... whats the big WOW with the upgrade?
Thanks!

ok wm6.1 was in beta for awhile i think it still is but it has since been perfected and is released... but the only way to get it right now is using the customn roms which is way better then using any other rom found any where else trust me ive tried them all and cutoms the way to go!!
and the big wow is the fixed all the bugs in it the stopped the memory leak increased speed. made tit very stable, reduced the size of the os system it self also the did many different registery hacks and edits to make it much better, they added a prgram that is called getting started which helps with alot of stuf and it isnt just a step by step its a good program,
theres no new gestures like that but theres many programs that do that that can be added on such as spb shell 2.0 umm pointui and ultimate lauinch.... trust me its worth upgrading and ive had every system out there wm5.0 symbian wm6.0 and now 6.1 and now im working on making a wm7 like program :) but using 6.1 as a base

The Touch firmware upgrade will have the same results in this area that all WM firmware updates have had over the past 10+ years.

Backup everything before attempting a ROM update. Also don't forget to switch to airplane mode. You don't wanna have someone ring your phone in the middle of an update and mess it all up.

Thats good to hear.
So just if someone can clarify a bit - The 6.1 version we are currently using with our cooked roms still contain bugs and are not as good as the officially released 6.1?
Excuse my ignorance

HTC themselves say they are still working out bugs in the 6.1 version. so this is a safe assumption.
On the other hand, I used a cooked rom for my HTC S620 from kavana and its pretty amazing and reliable.
My Touch ROM is too new and reliable for me to muck around with. So I will be waiting for the official upgrade.

looks like HTC have fixed the bugs, as 6.1 is being put on the diamond. Not sure if the offical release for the touch (GSM) will come anytime soon though.

Does this mean carriers (Rogers) will release a 6.1 update, or do they not normally follow suit with updates like this?

Rogers did release an update for thier previous HTC device, so they may well do so for this one. When is the major question though...

According to a statement given to Mobilsiden.dk from HTC the ELF will not receive an official upgrade.

My attempt at translating:
Five HTC models can, by this year, be upgraded to run version 6.1 of the Windows Mobile OS, HTC announces in a statement to Mobilsiden.dk.
The software should be ready for TyTN II by the end of May, while Touch Cruise and Dual should be ready by august, and HTC S730 is expected to be ready by the end of september. Additionally, comes Diamond, which from birth will be delivered with WM6.1.
The advanced HTC Advantage X7510 will be available to the market by the end of May, but only with the english version of Windows Mobile. X7510 will be delivered with nordic keyboard.
The upgrades for the other devices will be available in both danish and english from HTCs website as well as authorized shops.
So, we won't see an official 6.1 to our beloved Elf :'(

rdoeleman, please only reply in english here, is better for the group ;)
Roms don't need to be hacked, just modified to work :) Look in the ELF Upgrade etc.. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=374) part and you will find several ROM's there or look in the wiki http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Elf_Custom_ROMS
There is a good Dutch 6.1 ROM in development, and there are als some other custom build ROMS. Just look and read a bit there ;)
The touch surface ROM is a ROM based on 6.0 still, just follow the link in my sign and you will find it. It is a Dutch ROM, that why i'm sticking with it for now, and a very fast and stable one.
Good luck
P.S. still hoping that an official 6.1 ROM will become available for the Elf.... And also a translated version from T-Mobile :)

I'm still a newbie at this, what would I have to do to install your rom? Or just run the downloadable files?

Can we sticky this? This seems like a pretty big ordeal. Any updates folks? I live in the US so it's difficult for me to get updates from HTC like you guys as the only HTC devices that get support over here are the ones sold by the carriers (i.e. not the Touch).
Thanks all!

When I log on to HTC e-Club I find a ROM update available. The page doesn't give any more information as to what it includes, other than that it was released august 4th. You need to provide your S/N in order to download it. When I did I received a message that my phone was not supported, even though the update appeared under my phone category (Elf). What I suspect is that my language is not supported (norwegian) and they can spot that through the S/N. Perhaps someone with an english elf can try?

If i install the US version of 6.1 will the change do any harm to my PPC ???
AndyGizzle

In order to install 6.1 on your PPC you need to flash a custom rom to it. These are roms extracted from official 6.1 PPCs and in most cases modified/tweaked. It may harm your phone ofcourse, but if you follow given instructions you SHOULD be ok.

I have a Dual running WM6.1 and it works okay. Just this week the SMS cannot be opened for unknown reason.
I have to do a backup/hard reset/restore routine so I can open it but only for awhile, then back again for not being able to open even after several taps.
Any help out there?
Thank you.

Best thing to flash is Tabi's WM6.1 rom if you want a clean 6.1 version running. You can get the HTC Touch Official 6.1 ROM - MOCK UP [Tabish ROM v3.1.6.1] here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=397739).
