I'm trying to track down some of the ram chips the Infineon HYB18L256160bf-7.5 they are an obsolite component now, so if any one knows where I can source these ICs for that would be great. I have the equipment and skills to fit BGA's, I actually run couses on it, so if I can get a reliable source for these ICs I maybe able to offer an upgrade service.

Hi, there appears to be a couple of threads on this topic: Htc Universal Memory Upgrade. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=281560) and 128 Mb RAM on Universal (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=286861)
It appears a company called Retronex has been used for supply and soldering, but WizP (http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=280194) mentions a company called Xel in his post found here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1701536&postcount=242).
Their website is http://www.xel.co.uk/
Hope this helps, and let me know if you are going to upgrade Uni's as I'm looking to do this.

Thanks for the info, I had almost given up on sourcing the memory within the UK. I have contacted the guys at Xel and they have be very helpful. They have a good stock of these chips and I have ordered and recivered 2 of them. :D
My plan is to get some time next week to strip out the MBD from my Uni and rework the BGAs. I'll keep all those who are interested posted of my progress. Once I have done this I will also be able to let you know if I can offer this as a service.

Good morning to all,
For all of you wacthing this thread wanting to know how I have got on with the 128Mb upgade to my Uni. It is good news I now have a 128Mb Uni :D, not without a few tense moments though. I got the 2 old M-RAM chips off with no problems, but when reaplacing them with thew new ones a couple of solder balls didn't go down right on one of them. So I had to remove it, re-ball it, and replace it. Luckly it all went well the second time.
The second tense moment was after I re-assembled my Uni. It was doing a good impression of a brick , however this turned out to be just a flat battery.
So once changed I switched it on it booted up and is now showing 128Mb of RAM. I haven't noticed any great jump in app loading speed yet, I may need to tweak something in the ROM not sure yet (using WM6.1 RAN V7.6).
I'll keep you posted, on stablitiy.
Watch this space, upgrade servise coming soon.

Well done D.Apsley - you may want to look for ROM's with no page-pool. See here for Ranju's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=367448&page=129#post2154517
I am not sure of a huge speed increase, but it would mean for me that I could run my GPS software without having to clear out all programs fom memory (usually need's a reboot before starting the software).

Well i've been runing my Exec with the 128Mb for a week now and all is well. I have not noticed a massive change in speed, but I'm now able to run several app's at once without any system slow down or out of memory compliants.
I'm now going to offer this service to other members, but I need to work out the logistics of it. Namely costs and type of service, meaning Full Service, all parts supplied just send Exec and payment, returned when done, or Rework Service parts not supplied, send Exec, parts and payment, returned when done.
Will do screen repairs if I can source LCD and/or Digitiser.
Also looking at repalcement srevice for Metal LCD Cover plate. Has any tried to remove one.

Hi D.Apsley
I want to upgrade my Qtek9000 by my self I already order the chips and I have the ability to replace BJA components, also I have the HTC Service Manual if you want I can upload it.
As I know the only thing I should do, is replace the two BJA's and solder one 30Ohm resistor, please let me know if I need to do anything else.
Also I can get you the place that I ordered the chips maybe you can buy from them also.

That is great news!
Now some questions:
1. Will you accept customers from sweden, and if so what will the price tag be at?
2. Do you think it is possible to uppgrade to perhaps 256 MB instead of 128?
(That would be even better)
3. Do you give any warrant on your work, for instance, if I send you my device for an uppgrade and you accidentaly brick the device! What happens then?
Thanks in advance!

1) He hasn't figures out a price for the UK yet - so obviously not for 'foreign' customers.
2) We know 128 is the max.
3) We know the guy is doing because he can - not as a business - so how do you suggest he could offer a warranty?

I will offer an upgrade service to all those who are interested, I can provide the chips as well if required. I will be asking £50 (GBP) for labour and equipment use + return shipping costs. The chips are available for £18 each + shipping, from Xel Electronics Ltd., now I don't mind ordering the chips for you, at cost. I'm offering this as a service not as a business, so I cannot provide any form of warranty and there is a risk of permanent damage to the Uni. I thought I had bricked mine at first, it turned out to be a flat battery. This hardware is delicate. For anyone outside the UK I’m happy to do the work, but we will have to sort out the Shipping and payment on an individual basis, probably best to PM. As I will doing this at work after my actual job I cannot guarantee a fast turnaround.
I will do other types of repairs, LCD Screens, Digitisers, Keyboards, Case swaps. This is because I have the tools to do the work.
I should mention I have found somewhere at claims to have Genuine replacement housing in both Black (£42.95) and Silver (£39.95) go to http://www.mobilefun.co.uk

Is it worth my while posting DIY instructions for the memory upgrade, it might give you nightmares once you see what is involved and the cost of the equipment.

Hi,
I know exactly what is involve with the memory replacement and I already have the chips, I'm going to do the upgrade soon, please confirm that I should replace the two BGA ram's and add one 30 Ohm resistor. I have an automatic BGA replacement machine at work.
Thanks,

I just followed the instructions give on the 'Upgrading the Ram on your Universal to 128 MB' link on the HTC Universal wiki page here in xda-developer.
But basically yes remove the 2 x 32Mb M-Ram BGAs, Clean the pads, replace with the 2 x 64Mb M-Ram and solder a wire link across the 0402 pads. I've not come across the 30 Ohm resistor mentioned in any of the instruction, but shorting the two pads works.
Oh by the way there is a small battery on the underside the MBD near the M-Ram BGAs watch out you don't damage it.

Which resistor is it that you are talking about?

Do you think I can remove this small battery before I work on the BJA's or it may cause a lost of information.

The part im trying to identify is an SMD size resistor that is last in the chain to the antenna pad on the mainboard. it was knocked off after someone dropped my phone and now i have no reception. i work in a factory with smd machines so i can likely find the part but these things never have anything written on them..
as far as schematics, they must exist, probably just impossible to get hold of, my chinese is not near good enough to call the factory and try to sweet talk a schematic out of them..

I'm not sure what will happen if you remove the battery I just used some foil heat sheilding tape at we use at work.
Joshofbass
Once again are you talking about a Falcon or a Uni?
If you can let me know which model and where the SMD resistor is on the PCB I may be able to crack open the unit I've got and give you an answer? (Photo or footprint ID.)
As this looks like it is heading off topic for this thread it may be worth while PMing me or starting a new thread.
Cheers
Dave.

I have added a quick diagram at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2224729#post2224729
this is the corner of the mainboard where the antenna connects at the back. Thanks for your help.
