Hi guys
as you all know , samsung i780 is one of the most powerful pda with a slick design , it grabs your attention even if you hate samsung company, its really a special pda
so my suggestion is why we dont make a separate thread for this device, a thread that has sub threads like general , upgrading and roms hacking, accessories and FAQ, like the one for tytn II or touch curise
so what all of you think ?
thank and best regards,

Seems that this phone is selling very well, at least in europe.
A dedicated room makes absolutely sense.

I agree, the I780 must have it's own home. I have a herald, but when I got my hands on this baby, wow nothing like it. We should start to encourage developers for this new kind of screen.

While I have no doubt that the Samsung i780 is a good phone I must say that it should NOT get its own section here.
On the Main Page you will see this....
Welcome to xda-developers.com
This site is about certain PDA-phones, made by a firm called HTC in Taiwan. Their makers named them 'Wallaby', 'Himalaya', 'Blue Angel', 'Wizard' and 'TyTN', but almost nobody knows them by those names. The mobile provider O2 sells them under the brand-name 'XDA', and that's what we had in our hands first. They're also known as Qtek, MDA, SX-56, Hermes and many, many other names.
So Unless I missed something in my search, The Samsung device is not made by HTC. I'm all for there being a Developers Forum for a Samsung Device. If I had some web hosting space left I'd offer to host it. However this is an HTC site and I think it should be kept that way.

but as you can see in the devices section, there are sections for HP ipaq and Palm Treo 750, and from my knowlege HP ipaq and palm treo 750 are not htc devices therefore we dont see any problem to have a section for samsung i780 since the hp ipaq and palm treo 750 had, also the samsung i780 is a special case because the resolution of its display is 320*320 which means it will has its own programs and games, thats why it is important to have a section specially for this device

@AbdullahT
HTC is the manufacturer of the Treo 750 and several HP iPaq smartphones. So it's normal that they have their place on the XDA-forum.
@JimmyMcGee
While I agree with you that this forum is all about developing for HTC manufactured devices I still think the i780 should have it's own place here on this forum. First of all, this site has been created in order to port Linux to the XDA. That aspect got somewhere sort of lost, since this forum talks more about porting the latest Windows Mobile versions to older devices and writing Windows Mobile software to enhance the experience with Windows Mobile devices then porting Linux to HTC devices. So this forum has evolved and I can't see why it couldn't evolve into a forum that also talks about other then HTC manufactured smartphones.
Personally I would welcome a dedicated i780 section. It would make finding information about tweaking the i780 a lot more easier. The main problem is, that there are other popular smartphones around, like the LG KS20 which also deserve their own section.
In my humble opinion I think the current structure of this forum doesn't allow anymore for adding more smartphones. So I think it would be a wise idea to rethink the current structure. I would think more in terms of activities then in terms of different devices.

That too is my problem. There are So Many HTC phones that have their own section right now, and they keep adding more. I never said a forum couldn't evolve either. However I think the site and the Moderators have met their match. If we start adding non-HTC devices I think I will see more 404 and Server Time Outs when trying to surf my Kaiser forums.
As I noted, I am in no way against Forums dedicated to Samsung Development, but not here at XDA Developers. :)

So, why we are not speaking about the treo 650 which is built by HTC ?
Maybe because it's a palmos device ?
Maybe because this site is focused on windows mobile ?
Maybe the this site is used to speak mainly about the htc devices because they are so common in the WM world ?
Windows mobile devices, this is the focus of this forum, I don't think that the "racism" applied to a smartphone is a good idea.

We are, made by HTC. Lookie Here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=321
People, I am not debating the merits of the Phone. I'm saying that giving the sheer NUMBER of WM Smartphones and PDA Phones out there we need to draw a line in the sand somewhere in these forums. If we let non-HTC devices on we have to let all WM Smartphones and PDA Phones in here, and that will make it even MORE burdensome to run a forum like this.
Do you guys even know what goes on behind the scenes in a forum? I do, there is a lot of work. You have to extinguish flamers, Scoop Up SPAM droppings, remove redundant posts, keep the web server from buckling under the load, and much, much more.
This Forum is already very large as it is. If we let the requirement of it being an HTC device be shattered, we will have to let not only the Samsungs in, but the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 and the Pantech Duos. So many devices that it will be even more impossible to Search and navigate these forums.
If someone wants help setting up a Forum for The Samsung devices on another site or a new site, I would be happy to help. But I don't think XDA-developers.com should go that way.

Yes I know, the palm treo 750 is built by HTC as the palm treo 650 and the last bunch of treo 600, ad then ?
They are palm products, HTC is just an oem, the 750 is a WM device, two aren't.
So the point is windows mobile or is "built by HTC" ?

I know perfectly as I was one of the staff members of newsmobile.it wich actually has 50,000+ users (now I'm "retired").
Our initial focus was the SE p800 but after a year the site evolved following the market and the users preferences The world evolves, the sites too.

I dont know anything about the pantech, but the XPERIA is built by HTC, so same question as treo 750, is a HTC product or is a SE product ?

If we go by what is pasted on the Front Webpage, then Devices Made by HTC.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not adverse to Sites evolving, I'm just saying it is of the most important for a forums success to find a niche and stay with in it. That niche is allowed to change and evolve as the Admins see fit. The thing is if you start bringing in Other Devices your original members may boycott, and there is a lot of institutional knowledge here. I would hate to see us lose that.
I dont know anything about the pantech, but the XPERIA is built by HTC, so same question as treo 750, is a HTC product or is a SE product ?
My Research was Flawed on that then, from what I saw it was not. So standing by my original statement than, we can have a section for Sony XPERIA.
...
I feel as though I may have drawn a line in that sand and its all against me. I was solely trying to point out that maybe, just maybe, that we should think long and hard about what we recommend should happen to these forums.
I spend so much time here it is like a child to me. I don't want it to change too quickly or change because it's the popular thing to do. I want it to think about the ramifications and consequences of its actions.
I tip my hat to you good sir, and wish you all the best of luck with your new Samsung Sections.
I shall now creep away, tail between my legs.

For now, this forum is all about devices manufactured by HTC which run Windows Mobile. So let's draw the line there.
I can understand, I own a i780 you see, that most of you want to have a separate i780 section. It would make finding a lot of information easier. The question I ask is, does it?
Example, the Touch and the Prophet both use an OMAP850-chipset and as far as I can remember it wasn't that difficult to port Windows Mobile 6.0 from the Touch to the Prophet. Most applications developed specially for the Prophet will work without modification on the Touch and visa versa. Since these two devices have so much in common I would suggest merging them into one and only OMAP850-devices-forum. Same goes for other devices.
So instead of adding more and more HTC devices and if we listen to LG KS20 and Samsung SGH-i780 owners, also more and more non HTC devices, we could also rethink the structure of this forum and be all winners.

The phones merits, even I concede, are wonderful. I'm sorry there isn't a Forum dedicated to ROM Dev on this device. So create one.
Administration has said they do not wish to make a Section for it. So leave it at that.
Basically I've found it goes like this.
Formula for Adding a New Device Section.
device count = 0
if device maker = HTC
then device count = device count + 2
else device count = device count - 1
if device OS = Windows Mobile
then device count = device count + 1
else device count - device count - 1
if device count >= 3
then Create Section
if device count = 2
then Discuss
else Do Not Create Section

so could you please create for us a new section for this device.
thank you in advance and best regards,
Though I may not be an administrator. I believe we should respect their wishes and let this thread die.
I apologize if I came off as rude or crass or combative. I just think that this discussion is currently without purpose. I know the purpose of getting a i780 "room," but what I'm talking about is the fact that admins said "No." I don't want people posting here expecting that their added support will cause their desired "room" to be created.
I'd say in a few months, like six, that we should reevaluate it. However, with the rate at which phone technology changes, it wouldn't be worth it.
I've offered my assistance to anyone that wants to set up a i780 forum somewhere. And that offer still stands. I believe the i780 is a great phone. A lot of people are funs of it. It deserves its slice of the web, just maybe not a slice of XDA-Devs.

We understand before that HTC is the only major player in this market so a designated brand or factory approach is correct. However, now we see that there are more and more brand merging into the market and they are now comparable either in design, market share and function...
It is true that more and more people are playing roms in non-HTC brand phones.
Samsung is just one of it, Eten, Asus or coming SE Xperia will also be have certain market users numbers and it is unwise to put them out.
If I can figure out a break even model. I may consider to setup a developers forum for other brands.
Please consider to move up with the market. Just personal opinions.

I'd be more then happy to help set up. I bet if we got some people together and donated some money, we could afford hosting.
If you wanted you could get your own server, I have a place I can stick it on a fiber back haul at no cost, as long as we don't exceed a certain limit. You American Citizens are getting a Big Economic Stimulus Check. Just saying.

The challenge is to replicate the whole xda-developers platform including wiki, forum, shops with adding more brands to be discussed so can attract peoplet to visit in short time.
If do, not intend to a simple type which is not going to make a noise.

I was under the impression that this was a windows mobile site and not HTC only because it has an atom section which I think is made by Quanta and not HTC as can be seen here: http://msmobiles.com/news.php/4453.html and here: http://www.theunwired.net/?itemid=2686
I've just bought my own Samsung i780 and I'm ready to chuck out my HTC P3600i. While I'm ready to go to other forums to read tips, tricks, and get help about this phone, I personally love this site so I hope that even though the admin had already said no, based on the fact that the ATOM had crept its way to have it's own room, I hope that the i780 would also get it's own room.
Hey, can't blame a girl for trying. :D

Hey, I'm a fan myself. Trust me, I've been through three HTC devices in the last three years. I'm just hanging on to my i780 until the Xperia X1 comes out. I'm just echoing the sentiments of my fellow i780 owners.
If Atom has one, then please make one for i780. :D BTW, can anyone point me to some good samsung i780 forums aside from the one linked in this thread?

Guys i think this is a lost cause, i have loads of HTC's now and i have to keep rushing around the forums trying to keep all my phones up to date. Along with all my HTC's over the years i bought an I320 when it came out and i loved it, I then had an I600 and now have an I780 in my collection.
When i first got my I320 i tried to get a forum opened for it, the same again with the I600. The admins just refused point blank. I discussed it with some of them in pm and still no luck.
One point I asked at the time was whether the new (new back then) O2 XDA's were going to be listed, that was when O2 were going to release some non HTC's handsets under the XDA brand. I dont think i ever got an answer on that, I think O2 scrapped most if not all of the phones anyway. Would have been interesting to see whether they stuck to their guns then bearing in mind the site name.
Such is life.
