30th December 2008: HappyNewYear Cursor (http://www.marshallskins.ilbello.com/downloads.php) released. Just to wish you a happy new year http://www.marshallskins.ilbello.com/php5/htdocs/img/HappyNewYear_by_GibbyGibson%5BMarshall%5D.gif (http://www.marshallskins.ilbello.com/downloads.php)
31st August 2008: Cursor Pack 4 released; It is paricularly good for VGA devices
13th August 2008: MWC2.2 released
http://i27.tinypic.com/2jd4ay9.png
MWC2 (Marshall WaitCursor 2) is an application that lets you replace the default Windows Mobile WaitCursor. It is not a way to skin the existing one, but it offers a new concept of wait cursors.
New features in MWC2.2:
Possibility to loop to a non-first frame (like in gif animations)
Start the animation from where it stopped or always from the beginning
Possibility to refer to an already loaded frame without reloading the image
Example:
frame=1.png
frame=2.png
frame=*frame1
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame1
Specify the duration for each frame
Cursor file extension changed from .mwc to .mwc2
Minor BUGs fixed
TODO list: Third post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2093224#post2093224)

Marshall WaitCursor 2
7th April 2008
_______________________
MWC2 is a WaitCursor application for Windows Mobile. You can make your own
WaitCursors using png files with Alpha Transparent Channel. So you can make cursors
of any shape you like and also semi-transparent ones.
Read carefully the License before installing or using this Software.
_______________________
1. INSTALLATION
- Place the cab into any folder of your device
- Execute it
- Choose the installation folder
- Launch the application from Start\Programs\MWC2\MWC2
2. UNINSTALL
- IMPORTANT: Unload the application using MWCUnload
- Remove the program from "Remove Programs" in the System Settings
3. WHAT'S IN THE PACKAGE
- AquaBlob\ [ AquaBlob cursor folder ]
- AquaSwirl\ [ AquaSwirl cursor folder ]
- Danger\ [ Danger cursor folder ]
- AquaBlob Graphite\ [ AquaBlob Graphite cursor folder ]
- BlueGlass\ [ BlueGlass cursor folder ]
- Swirl\ [ Swirl cursor folder ]
- Butterfly\ [ Butterfly cursor folder ]
- Crystal\ [ Crystal cursor folder ]
- Tux\ [ Tux cursor folder ]
- MWC2.exe [ Main program that loads the WaitCursor ]
- MWCUnload.exe [ Program Unloader ]
- MWCConfig.exe [ MWC2 Configuration ]
- MWC2.dll [ Main program library ]
- Readme.txt [ This Readme file ]
- License.txt [ Program License ]
4. HOW TO CHANGE THE CURSOR
- Launch Start\Programs\MWC2\MWCConfig
- Change the settings you want
- Click on Save
5. HOW TO MAKE A CUSTOM WAITCURSOR
- Make one png file for each frame of the animation
(avoid different resolutions for the frames)
- Make a conf.mwc file following the outline of an already existing .mwc file.
Expecially you can configure:
- nFrames: the number of frames
- xPosition and yPosition: the position where to draw the frames
- frameInterval: the interval between each frame (in milliseconds)
- startDelay: initial delay to wait before showing the cursor
- frame: each frame making the animation
Read the comments in .mwc files for more configuration details
- Put the .png files and the conf.mwc file in a folder naming it with the name of the skin
6. FAQs
1. Why I can't see any WaitCursor when MWC is executed?
-> MWC tries to replace the Windows Mobile default wait cursor but it is not always possible.
Depending on the device, memory, and other parameters, MWC2 may not be able to load succesfully.
Unload MWC2 (using MWCUnload), wait a couple of minutes and then try again (launcing MWC2) or
soft-reset your device.
2. When I boot my device, I get this error: "Error locating process"
-> It may happen if MWC2 is loaded too early. Try increasing the Boot Delay in MWCConfig.
7. CREDITS
- The first person I want to thank is my girlfriend, Mary.
Then I have to thank Herojit from MSDNForums
and last but not least, a very special thank to Chris McKay from Lakeridge Software.
You can advertise my program to anyone you want but you can't post the binaries
out my Website. My Website must be the only place where to download this program.
For any particular use, ask me by email or through my website.

Start the animation from where it stopped or always from the beginning
Improve the landscape support specifying different coordinates or pictures for landscape
Add bigger cursors for VGA devices
Make cursor positioning more flexible (add "left", "right", "top", and "bottom" and negative coordinates)
Possibility to refer to an already loaded frame without reloading the image
Example:
frame=1.png
frame=2.png
frame=*frame1
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame1
Specify the duration for each frame
Add a timeout to stop the cursor even if SetCursor(NULL) function is not called

It depends on the cursor you use. With the Tux WaitCursor it takes 73 KBs in my device. Anyway you can check it with a task manager.
@azzambm: Can you try a soft reset and then reinstall? You can also try to download it again.

Installs just fine, but when I run MWC2 i get "Error locating process" every time. I changed to Boot delay to 5, 10 and 30, i get "Error locating process" every time. This even comes up every time I run MWCUnload. The Config seems to work and remember which cursor I set.
This seems to be the exact same thing that happened with MWC (ver 1)
I'm using a Tmobile Wing with stock ROM.

It is true. I'm sorry about that! I'll try to find a solution for the square devices. In the meantime, you can change the settings by editing the values under
HKCU\Software\Marshall\MWC2
and then apply the changes with the "Save" button in MWCConfig.

Maybe you have to play with the boot delay. If the problem appears again, try increasing the boot delay.

Very nice but very buggy. :(
Each time I try to start the program I get the "Error loading process" message. If I increase the delay time, it only increases the time it takes to get the same error message. It took me a while to figure out how to change the delay since the config program only stays open for about 2 seconds so I have to be really quick. Hope you get the issues fixed since this is nice eye candy! Thanks!

I had the same problem initially with the config program closing after a couple of seconds. Then I figured I needed to LOAD the wait cursor first, then soft reset and after that, I can now use the config program to preview and select the cursors. So far is working for me.

I can confirm that I soft-reseted and the same prob was happening and other stuff seemed strainge, so i was going to uninstall after another soft-reset and everything works. Some devices may need to soft-reset twice, no idea why, but it works for me now :D

This is probablly because you never launched MWC2 first. Try launching MWC2 and then open MWCConfig.

Hi Nightmanx,
Please can you answer those few questions?
1. Do you have PIN or PASSWORD enabled at boot?
2. Can you check if MWC2.lnk is present at \Windows\Startup?
3. What is the value of "Boot Delay" in the Config tool?
Thanks

Nice app, worked first time on my WM6.1 kaiser
One question though - what are the "Skins" on your site? Are they meant to be extra wait cursors? I see no real interface worth skinning, and when I intall one of the cabs I see no change. Also if I try to install another skin cab it says it has to remove the existing waitcursor skin.

MWC2 is far different from Marshall WaitCursor Skin.
- Marshall WaitCursor Skin is a skin for the default WM wait cursor
- MWC2 (and MWC) is a brand new application that replaces the default WM wait cursor and supports PNG files with transparence.

Ahh, OK - maybe you should make that a little clearer?
Also, how about MNG support? Or something else that can temporally compress, as it seems a bit of a waste to store each pixel of every frame rather than just a diff...
mr_deimos
2nd May 2008, 11:00 PM
I don't really see the point of additional compression - MWC uses png's that are compressed files to store the skins, and they have to be decompressed and stored in the memory as bitmaps anyway. When they're needed they should be accesible as fast as possible and with as little CPU usage as possible - remember that decompressing images at runtime would take CPU time, and since it's a _wait_ cursor, it's displayed when the CPU already has more than enough to do ;)
evilc
8th May 2008, 02:02 PM
I said *temporally* compress, as in a video that only stores a diff betweeen frames. Not compression as in performing math or run-time comparison.
This should surely result in less memory and CPU usage as it is only has to process the pixels that change, not every pixel for every frame.
This would potentially enable full-screen animations, which are currently unfeasible due to memory and CPU usage. These may not be such a silly idea as it first sounds. I am not talking about a full-screen animation, just something using part of it at any given time with the rest transparent. For example, a wait cursor could be the border 1px of the screen glowing and spinning around the edge or something - if done as a progressive mng, only a couple of hundred pixels per frame would have to render, with the current method, every pixel on the screen would be processed, plus the file size difference would be huge.
Not that it hugely matters, your app is great anyway, just suggesting ideas to make it even better ;)
Marshall07
9th May 2008, 04:26 PM
Thanks for the suggestion evilc, but like mr_deimos saied, using a compressed format will make the CPU work more.
Let me explain:
If you save the pictures as compressed, when you want to draw them, you'll have to decompress them requiring more CPU work. Once you have loaded the pictures, they'll reside in the RAM as decompressed thus occupying the same as the uncompressed format.
MWC and MWC2 work in this way:
- Load the png pictures (will take a few time and it will be done only once)
- Then the pictures will reside in the RAM so avoiding to reload them again evrerytime the cursor needs to be shown.
BTW, few png frames will not require too much memory (and maybe neither big pictures will) so I "vote for PNGs" :p
However, very thanks for your suggestion and please, explain me further if you think I didn't answer correctly or if you want to add something.

I suppose it all depends on whether it decompresses before you select it into the DC or not, as don't all PNGs have compression? (lossless?)
Anyway, it was just an idea, a bit pointless flogging a dead horse, and i just realised you can specify an x/y coord for each frame, so you could do full screen animations without needing progressive frames.
One more suggestion then:
Allow the author of an mwc file to specify which frame to loop back to when it reaches the end. You might not want to loop back to frame 1 if you want your animation to have a "lead-in".
An example of an application for this would be one of the clock style round wait cursors you see where one of the 12 "ticks" is opaque and the previous 2 or 3 are slightly transparent (to make it look like the main tick is leaving a trail). With my suggestion the first couple of frames would have to be different to the main loop as the first frame should be just one tick but no semi-transparent previous ticks would be present. Hard to explain...

I perfectly understand you explanation. Thanks for pointing it out. Actually I already thought about it during the first steps of the MWC development but I had to focus my attenction to the main features.
Maybe in the feature I'll implement those two features:
1. Set the coordinates for each frame
2. Allow to cicle to a non-first frame
Many thanks for the suggestion, evilc :)

Here is my wait cursor - StarTrail.
The pictured shape but animated - one point is visible at any one given moment, and the last two that showed are partially transparent leaving a "trail".
Currently without being able to loop back to a different frame other than 1, the trail has to dissapear at the end and reappear at the start, but I have done this gracefully (takes a couple of frames to fade out rather than just resetting)

My question is, is this a ppc app only ? and are you planning on making a smartphone version ?

Do you mean support for the config tool? because the cursor itself should display correctly in VGA devices, too.

In the 2.1 version the config app bug is fixed. Also, the app will work in smartphone devices, too but the config tool is not yet compatible with them. So you'll have to change the cursor and the other settings from the registry (under HKCU\Software\Marshall\MWC2) and soft-reset.
I plan to add support for the config tool in smartphones in the next releases.

I have a diamond and it is vga 480x640 and the cursors are tiny. Any way to fix that?
Just make a bigger cursor :) If you've got bigger resolution, the dot is smaller and cursor too :)

You may want to customize the icons by resizing them to suit your diamond, Im not sure about the size though that will be optimal for the diamond.
I have just finished customizing one icon "SHinchan" and it just hit me, If I could make an Icon full screen for my Elf, it would be like those effects in some games wherein you'll see some static, blurry, flashy images, Im thinking of Manhunt 2-ish kind of effects. Anyway, I'll try what I can and post it here if anybody is interested. Hey Marshall, nice apps, the best, I'll post my customized icons for everyone to use

I thought of doing some full screen stuff myself, but I think it may be quite resource hungry and it is a wait cursor after all, so resources are low when it is to be used - bear that in mind ;)
Saying that, I would guess that if the blit routine is at all optimised, then totally transparent pixels would not slow it down, so I was thinking of making one that is basically all transparent, but animate a line sweeping around the border.

Hi everybody...
I've been so busy those weeks and I couldn't dedicate enough time on MWC2. From tomorrow I should have more free time and finally I'd be able to release MWC2.1. :)
I'm planning to release a "VGA" cursors pack, too. Also the website will be restyled.
I'd like to thank piper_indebt for his wonderful waitcursor. Do you mind if I include it in a future cursors pack?
Evilc, your idea of a fullscreen waitcursor is so good! I also tried in the past to make a "matrix" like waitcursor but it'll require a couple of MBs of RAM and not all evices will like this. Please, keep you idea up! ;)
Thanks to everybody who is contribuiting to MWC2 with tips, ideas, cursors or simply showing their appreciation!

Hi Marshall
Great app, was using it on my HTC Trinity, but i've now upgraded my rom to 6.1 and i'm having a few problems with it. When i launch the config it just says "can't open config file" then closes. Sorry for being a noob if this has already been answered..... but can any help me find out where i'm going wrong??
EDIT: right sort of got it working, it just about gives me enough time to pick a cursor and save it in the config before it closes... soft reset and it works......GREAT! nice work again Marshall, looking forward to 2.1

Evilc, your idea of a fullscreen waitcursor is so good! I also tried in the past to make a "matrix" like waitcursor but it'll require a couple of MBs of RAM and not all evices will like this. Please, keep you idea up! ;)Just thought of an issue with this idea:
The cursor would be screen res dependant. If I make the cursor for portrait mode (240x320), it will not work right in Landscape mode (320x240). Now for a lot of cursors, rotating it 90deg may not help (eg if there was a "right way up" for any part of the image, it would look wrong), but for my idea, this doesn't matter.
So how about adding a setting in 2.1 that allows you to rotate the cursor 90deg, or to allow you to specify one folder for portrait, one for landscape?
If you need help detecting portrait or landscape on PPC, I can tell you an easy way to do it...
evilc
30th June 2008, 12:46 PM
OK, Here is a first draft of the "EdgeTrail" idea:
This shows up another issue:
When the edge is at the top of the screen, the "Top bar" overwrites the edge, so it disappears :(
Also, I have had to set the interval between very low (5 ms) to get the animation at all smooth. Either that or up the # frames, but it is already 20 frames (ie about 20k) so I do not think this is practical.
Finally, there is a new version of StarTrail included, I had made an omission and left frame 8 out of my animation too (I would check one of your samples - I think I copied a mwc file as a reference, and if someone else missed frame 8 too, I doubt that is a coincidence??) I also set the StartDelay to 0 to make it loop better...

I'll consider to implement this option in the next version. At the moment I want to focus my attention to solve the "fullscreen" problem. I guess you have WM 6.1 because with WM65 and WM6 the problem doesn't appear.

This is my way to get around my problem of unable to use the configuration tool:
a. Create a folder in MWC2 called "default"
b. Make the following change to registry
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Marshall\MWC2:CurrentSk in = default
to change cursor:
1. stop MWC2
2. Copy contents of any of any cursors folder (ie, png files and conf.mwc) to the default folder
3. start MWC2
The above is my work around to play with all of the nice and wonderful cursors...I am thinking of writing a script to change cursor on a regular interval...hehe...this would be fun!

had a bit of spare time over the weekend to try and make my own cursors from animated gifs that i had..... I've had a bit of trouble with the program .. it keeps saying can't find config file.... but after a few soft-resets i've now got one of my cursors working.... I've not had time to check all the one's I made, but I thought i'd post them on here anyway and see if any one likes them..
I've never really used photoshop to edit gif's and png's so this was a total beginners attempt.. I tried using different size gifs so some of them may be too big.... I think i edited the conf.mwc correctly but if anyone would care to comment on them it would be appreciated.

Hi skilty.
Thanks for your contribute. Only one consideration: the cursors you made have no transparency (they have a white background) so they may look not so good as cursors. If you can't transform the white background into transparent, just try adding a frame around it. ;)

I'd noticed that cos i'm currently using my "snarl" cursor and it shows the white background. I am a total noob when it comes to photoshop type programs, but i'll have a go at what you've suggested (although i don't know how to change the background into transparent or add a frame around it, so any advice would be good)
thanks for the trying them piper_indebt, tried your little boy cursor too.... it's cool!
once i've sussed out the transparency thing i'll make some more, just one question though... Should i try and make them to a particular size?? I presume a smaller size would "load" the cursor quicker and make it appear smoother than a big cursor?
EDIT: just sussed the transparency thing.... Here's Cry2 and Snarl which now have no white background...... (the Magic Wand option in my photoeditor did the trick!)...... i'll get the others sorted too and some new ones and post some more

How many cursors! It's wonderful! :p
A little tip: you can make cursors also from "real" cursors... I mean .ani files which are animated cursors for Windows (I use RealWorld Cursor Editor to extract the frames). This solution is better since .ani files already have alpha transparence while .gif files have flat transparence. But it is difficult to find good .ani files...

Your cursor is a really good idea !! But i think with more frames that will be smoothest ;) (if you can do this)
I don't think that'd be wise - remember that all frames have to be stored in the memory all the time, and fullscreen cursors are quite large. Even the current 4-frame cursor uses over 1,3Mb RAM. Each additional frame will need about 340kb more memory.
For comparison: a 10-frame 40x40px cursor needs only 64kb memory.
And a little feature request:
How about making cursor positioning a bit more flexible? Here's what i think could be useful:
*add "left", "right", "top", and "bottom", besides the "center" as possible x and y cursor positions
*add positioning in respect to right/bottom edge of the screen. Negative coordinates could be used for this:
"xPosition=10" would draw the cursor 10 pixels from the left edge, but "xPosition=-10" would draw it 10 pixels from the right one.

Exactly the same effect could be acheived my making the order 1,2 and doubling the time each frame is shown for.
Think about it: currently (with 1,2,2,1 order) for two repeats you get:
1,2,2,1,1,2,2,1
If you made it (1,2), but doubled the length of each frame, you would effectively get:
1,1,2,2,1,1,2,2
Which is just the same but shifted 1 place.

It should work but I' afraid that the memory usage will be doubled. It'll be handled as if you specify 4 different pictures.
Maybe you would like a feature to specify the duration in milliseconds for each frame? I guess I have to add another entry in the TODO list. :p

The best and easiest way is to modify an existing one. You'll find a .mwc file in every cursor folder in your device or downloading the MWC CursorPack1. Simply open the .mwc file with a notepad and chage the values to your needs. :)

Hi strikeone,
probably you installed the "Marshall WaitCursor Skin - Vista" which is not a skin for MWC2 but a skin for the default Windows Mobile cursor application. This is the reason why you can't see it in the list of MWC2 cursors.
Vista cursor for MWC2 will be present in a future MWC Cursor Pack.

I have 2 problems with MWC2 on my XV6800
The wait cursor stays in the middle of the screen during most application.
Also I tried installing the vista cab for the theme but it does not show up in the config.
Ideas?
Can you provide more info for the first problem, please?
About the second problem, you don't have to download "Marshall WaitCursor Skin" because they are NOT cursors for MWC but they are skins for the default WM cursor handler. You have to download the Cursor Packs to add cursors to MWC.

Ok here is an example. Its just kind of hanging out in the middle of the screen. Also when I am in the configurator and I click the preview it closes the configurator and I need to reopen it, unload MWC, reload MWC, and go back to the configurator. And sometimes that works. I may have to do it a few times to get it to work. See Attached.

Ok, so you see the WaitCursor even if you are doing nothing.
Can you answer those questions?
1. Which O.S. do you have?
2. How many free RAM?
3. What programs do you have installed?
4. Does a soft-reset solve the problem?

Thanks for the update. I've had it installed on my WM6.1 Wizard for two days now and no problems encountered so far.
By the way, i attached the cursor i'm using now. When i looked at my Ubuntu Studio (http://ubuntustudio.org/) desktop one day, i thought that with a little animation its logo would make a nice wait cursor. So i made one :) It's attached to the post (of course the cursor uses transparency, just the preview animation is on gray background).
Also, i have a question. In the config files you say to avoid drawing on top and bottom bar. Can this cause any really bad effect (like potential instability), or is the worst-case scenario that the cursor will just be overdrawn by some other software?
Oh, and you forgot to edit out the MWC version number in the tread title, Marshall. Didn't notice for a while that there even was a new version out :)
I just noticed something rather silly: With my cursor selected and splash screen enabled, MWC2 takes 285kb RAM. But with exactly the same cursor selected, and splash disabled, it needs only 145kb - that's almost 200% increase just for the splash option. I checked it a few times, making sure that all framed of the cursor are displaeyd at least once before checking RAM usage (to make sure all of them are loaded), and the numbers were the same each time. In fact, even going to MWC config and toggling the splash screen option was enough to see the effect in task manager.
I guess that the splash screen is simply kept in memory all the time, but since it has to be displayed only once, couldn't it be purged from memory afterwards? That's probably just something you overlooked, but fixing it should be a good way to effectively cut down RAM usage by half (so that there's more room for bigger, nicer cursors :D )

Thank you so much for your testing, mr_deimos!
Actually I forgot to change the title... Now it's updated to "MWC2.2"!
About the avoiding to draw on the bars:
I told to avoid drawing on the top and bottom bars because some old versions didn't use a dedicated window to display the cursor but drawed it directly on the screen. This could cause the top and bottom bars to not update, thus showing part of the cursor on them even if the animation stopped.
Since MWC2 you can draw on the bars with no fears even if in some situations the top bar may still appear in front.
About the Splash Screen:
Thanks for pointing out! I'll check what you are saying and will try to fix this. As you guessed, probably it's just something I overlooked...
About the Ubuntu Studio cursor:
Thanks for it. I'll add it to the next Cursor Pack. :cool:

Can someone make this transparent? 27 images.
Thanks
There you go, a zipped psd file is attached to the post. There are 27 layers in it, each with a mask. So if you want to change the color of the cursor, you can just bucket-fill entire layers with desired color since all transparency info is held in masks.
It was rather simple job using GIMP: basically needed to do "layer/mask/add layer mask" and select "greyscale copy of layer" as mask type. There should be option like this in other graphic software as well.
I also had to play around with contrast and brightness settings and clean images up a bit, since the source files probably were compressed using some lossy algorithm (jpg probably) which caused some artifacts. Besides that, i cropped the image a bit since it didn't have to be that big.
Since i don't know what color you would like the cursor to be, i'll leave finishing it to you. However i'd advise against white color - most of window backgrounds are white so the cursor will be hard to notice on them

Just FYI...
The frameInterval command now seems to do nothing.
Furthermore, if I put a frameDuration command after each frame= line, then I get a "can't load the image" error. This particularly causes problems at startup - The splash screen stays showing and stops you from using the UI on the device. The only way out of this is to use the Add/Remove Progs in ActiveSync on your PC to remove MWC2. I *think* the problem may be because I have a frameDuration command and a frameInterval command.
Attached is the new version of StarTrail - it has 2 start animation frames then loops back to frame 3.
This animated GIF shows frames 3 to 10 (No start up) on a white background

The frameInterval parameter is no longer used. I reported this in the readme file. Anyway, if you put this parameter it should not cause any error. The "can't load the image" error is fired when you specify a wrong filename or if the nFrames parameter is different from the number of frame lines.

Overall, it looks good, but it seems that you accidentally shifted some of the frames - the animation is not as smooth as with the previous cursors - you can actually notice some frames jumping up and down.
Another technical note - how did you remove the layer mask? The cursor seems a bit rough around the edges. The best way is to go to layer/mask/apply layer mask (at least it is there in GIMP, but any other software supporting psd format should have something like this).
Here's one more little contribution - VGA versions of my gear cursors. Enjoy :)

The cursor needs more frames to flow better, one day...
Well, since it wasn't that hard, i made one with a bit more frames ;) It's not an exact copy, but i guess it's close enough. The animation/setup could have been better (i don't like that the cursor almost disappears on two of the frames), but i don't feel like changing it right now.
But there's also a problem - MWC2 doesn't seem to like so many frames (32 of them) - it shows only about half the frames and then restarts the animation. I've checked the config file and it seems to be fine. Is there any frame limit i exceeded or is it a bug?
I 've attached the cursor and a gif animation showing how it should look like.
Feel free to include in cursor packs and modify (hint: to change the cursor color, open the file in gimp/photoshop, check "lock alpha chanel" in layer properties, select all and use bucket fill set to fill entire selection. Or just draw over the layer with a pencil set to huge size)

Uhm... If it happens only with Dynamo, it may be the program the cause. When a program calls the System function SetCursor() the cursor starts the animation and then the program has to call the function again (with another parameter) to stop the animation.
Does it happen only with Dynamo 3?

I think this is what is happening to me when I use Throttle Launcher 0.93. When I click on weather tab, the cursor will start. After the weather Temp, date & time are updated, the cursor continues to run. I need to go to Mail Tab and click on the mail screen on top before the cursor goes away.
I had wanted to write to you about the above problem earlier but decided to read all the posts to see if there is already a solution.
Is it possible for you to provide your cursors as a standalone cab instead of using the MWC2.2 application? Maybe this could solve the above problem.
I'm using a Kaiser, and very sure that the default cursor in the rom I'm using does not have the above problem. When I disable Throttle Launcher in Today plug-in, I don't face this problem.
Hope you can solve this. Thank you, love your icons, especially the rotating sand clock, and the dancing banana (sorry can't remember the names you gave to them).

I think that the "cursor doesn't stop animation" problem is not an MWC2 bug.
Anyway I'll add an option to set a timeout which will force the cursor to stop even if the SetCursor(NULL) function is not called.
I know that my friend Chris McKay (the developer of Wisbar Advance III (http://www.lakeridgesoftware.com/products/pocketpc/WisBarAdvance/)) added this option in his program for this reason.
So I updated the TODO List (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2093224#post2093224).

Example:
frame=1.png
frame=2.png
frame=*frame1
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame2
frame=*frame1
Specify the duration for each frame
Cursor file extension changed from .mwc to .mwc2
Minor BUGs fixed

Actually, GIFs aren't very good source of animations since they support only i bit transparency (so can be fully visible or fully invisible, while pngs and MWC support 256 levels of transparency) and only 256 colors (MWC uses 24 bit color - that's 16 777 216 colors). Some simple cursors can be made from gif animations, but in most cases they'll have really bad-looking sharp edges.
Animated windows cursors, for example ones for CursorXP are much better source of animations:
http://www.deviantart.com/#catpath=customization/skins/windows/cursorxp&order=9
Grab a cursor pack, change its extension from .CurXPTheme to .zip and inside you'll find a bunch of png files. Some of them contain an animation with all frames placed on the single image, like in the bottom rows of this preview:
http://fc08.deviantart.com/fs11/i/2006/173/2/a/BASEnation_by_firstfooter.jpg
So all you have to do is to cut the image into even pieces and you'll have an animated png waitcursor :)

Its been a while since I've updated, Nice version.
Marshall, I have updated the Beavis and Butthead cursor to 2.2,
and I have utilized the repeating frames, But I am having some trouble
when the frame is on the 20th up, it does'nt repeat.
I have successfully loaded frames 8 and 9 but frames 21 and 22 is not repeating, I've posted the file and the frame reference

The frames not repeating should show Butthead shaking after Beavis smacked him.
Now I'm stuck updating the other cursors from previous versions :(

Ok I found out the problem why MWC2.2 can't show properly cursors made up of an high number of frames.
The memory allocated to read the config file (conf.mwc2) is set to 2000 chars so when the cursor have lot of frames the config file will easily be larger than 2000 chars.
I prefer not to increase this size. The best thing to do is to remove all the comments from the conf.mwc2 (they are useless).
Here is how I changed the Beavis & Butthead config file:

Thanks for all your contribuition! Keep it up.
I have a little bad news :(
The filesystem of my hard disk went corrupted and I had to reinstall everything from the beginning (also the operating system). Fortunately I was able to recover about the 99% of the files but some MWC2.2 files are missing.
Now (in my few free time) I'm rewriting some parts of the program... so the development has been slowed down. But it will continue, maybe better that before! ;)

Hi leen,
does this happen when you boot your device or when you unload MWC2 first and then launch it manually?

Marshall here is some more information for you.
HTC Touch Pro
ROM: 1.90.401.1 WWE
Radio: 1.02.25.19
I get the "Error locating process" when I load and unload the application. I've increased the Boot Delay and still get the message. It never displays the wait cursor that I selected either, only the default windows mobile wait cursor. I've soft reset and still get the message.
Thanks for your help!

@leen15:After the softreset, you don't have to launch MWC2.exe. After the softreset MWC2 is started automatically and when you change some settings it is restarted automatically.
@enrique999: What happens if after the softreset (and the error message) you launch MWC2Unload, wait one minute and launch MWC2 from Start->Programs->MWC2?

When this happens, please, can you try to unload MWC2 with "Programs->MWC2->MWC2 Unload" and then reload it again with "Programs->MWC2->MWC2"?
If it works, then probablly you have to increase the boot delay to avoid the bug at the startup.

Just to report I had wierd issues with the touch pro also.
Reboot until you stop getting the "Error locating process" error.
Then pick your cursor, and reboot again to get it working.
It does work, but it looks scarily like it is gonna bork your system for a bit. At one point I had the default windows cursor AND tux strobing together...

i kept it at the default value.. what do u recommend for the touch pro ?
are there going to be anymore professional vga wait cursors released?
is it necessary to load the whole program.. there is no way to just install a cab to change the wait cursor to a specific one...? is that only recommended for wm5 devices...?

- TF3D can cause some problems at boot because it takes so much resources... So if you increase the boot delay to something like 20-30 seconds it may solve the boot problem. (For the Diamond and the Touch Pro there is a different way to safely load the programs at boot without interferring with TF3D. I'm planning to implement this way, too).
- Yes I'm planning a brand new release with an totally new config tool and with new VGA cursors (now I have a Diamond :D). However it will take some time.
- The whole program is necessary but not the cursors. You can browse to "\Program Files\MWC2" and remove the folders of those cursors you don't like (but remember to not remove the currently selected one).
- It will work in WM5 and WM6 devices

Marshall WaitCursor 2
6. FAQs
I keep having the "Error locating process" either with launching MWC2 or unloading it ... I've increased the boot delay up to 20 sec and still no luck
The device is an HTC Touch HD
Cheers

hopefully a new version compatible with TF3D :))))

Yes, there will be a version compatible with TF3D (I hope soon but I'm so busy right now).
Anyway, try to increase further the BootDelay, for example to 30-40 seconds and see if it solves the problem

I have a problem with this version on the SE Xperia X1.
It seems to interfere with the Panels interface somehow. When I select the SE panel I see the egg timer (:)) appear briefly, but then the panel fails to appear and instead reverts to the Today screen.
I see v3 is in beta testing, but I don't know if Xperia is covered. I'd be happy to do so if needed.

Anyway, would you like to contribuite in the beta testing of MWC3? There is no one with an Xperia, yet.

Yep, problem disappears when MWC is unloaded.
The funny thing is that the other panels (fish, SPB mobile Shell, Google, Media, Radio etc) are okay. It's just the two SE panels, and that the panels button becomes sluggish and unresponsive, requiring several presses before it works again.
With MWC enabled, selecting a SE panel brings up the low-res still image (while the panel loads in the background), the waiting icon appears, the panel loads for a second but then closes and the default Today screen appears instead.
I'd be happy to experiement with MWC 3 if you'd like to PM me with details. :)

It is normal, because the file Shellres.192.dll contains both the cursor and the taskbar icons (with the start icon too).
If you want to change only the cursor you have to edit the file with a resource editor (like Resource Hacker or Exescope), export only the cursor frames and import them (again with a resource editor) in the original file you have on your device.
