I made a WM6 "Essentials" ROM by stripping away lesser used features and those that people are having trouble with to leave what is used the most by Pocket PC users.

Hi Tommy,
I am afraid that the IPAQ HP 2210 only has 32 MB of ROM
I have checked , re checked... and found on many sites that it has 32 MB...
I have even found this on xda-developpers : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=337623&highlight=2210
So any advice for my poor 32 Mb ROM PDA ?
thanks again

IS THE ROM-SIZE 'Reduced' accordingly??
As far as it seems, ROMs must be 64MB. However most of them are probably padded with empty space that leaves room on the device for your own things. Can tommy_adsl please clarify if I am right?

IS THE ROM-SIZE 'Reduced' accordingly??
I have installed antgly's ROM and the resultant storage space is even less than Tommy's version without SRS. This ROM results in 12.16MB of storage size whereas Tommy's one, 12.75MB. Those programs reduced only affect the program space but not the storage space.

Along those lines is there any way to just have the ROM load from the SD or CF card? Might be a nice work around for older devices that do not have a large enough ROM.

==> it could be a problem with your configuration ?
1- check the active sync version and install AS 4.5
2- check the AS configuration :
- allow USB connection
- let the computer be connected to : "automatic"
hope this helps

i want to transfer file via the ir port. it can't find any device in the range. but i can use noviiremote to control my TV.
I found the infrared was not working as well, I was unable to beam a business card from my mobile phone to my hx2190 running Tommys WM6.1. I compared the registry values with my hx2795 running PDAViets WM6.0 and changed a few values to match. Nothing happened until I did a reset. Now, using IRDA, the 2190 accepts the business card from the phone, it can send and receive files beamed from File Explorer and it will Activesync to my laptop (Which my 2795 with WM6.0 won't do!).
Try altering HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\IrDA\DevAddr to 3431 hex (13361 decimal) then reset your device and try beaming a file.

I'm sure that it's a problem with my configuration, but I do not know what is and I do not find.
1- AS is 4.5
2.1-USB connection is allowed
2.2-What is this option? If this is the fourth option in the "configuration" (the fourth check box), then it is also allowed.
I tried on another PC and the same thing happens, so I think that the problem should be in the configuration of the PDA. If you can show me as to set, I should like so much.
Have any other idea?
Thank you for your time, Alain

I have used this rom now for 5 days - and installed a LOT of programs and tested it very extensively. Also use a bluetooth keyboard. I never experienced any problems. Movies are playing fine with coreplayer. All the SPB programs are working perfectly. Memory is good.
It seems that WM6.1 is a lot faster then WM5 and a lot stabler...

I dream to have so much (30-35 mb) free space on my hx2110 too!!
In reality, for hx2110 and hx2410 devices having 64MB rom, the free space would be 12~12.9MB.
I believe many people are awaiting a new "lite" rom in the near future!!. :p:D

I hope that following can serve others who have the same problem.
After a few hours testing, installing and uninstalling both problems have been resolved.
As I have done several things I do not know exactly what was the source of problems. I comment major maneuvers:
-- Basic: eliminate completely AS in computer, restart and reinstall. From there I allowed to connect to the Internet via USB-> PC.
-- Configure manually absolutely all options both AS (putting that does not allow wireless connections while connected via USB and leaving the defaults in the setting: automatic selection and not allow connections to ports) and the PDA, especially in the part of "Network Cards" (I think there was much of the problem).
-- Uninstall Wisbar Advance 3.1.8 and 3.1.7 back to that works much better in combination with the SPB PocketPlus 4.0.2. Also reinstalled and reconfigure the PocketPlus. I think both programs are maintained quite poorly with each other and with the WM6.1 thus doing some things remain rare (sometimes not refreshed icons Today's SPBPP plugin, sometimes puts the same icon to many different programs, etc.) . It will be a matter of they solvethese failures in future versions or we select only one of both...
-- Check SD, since in one of his many comings and goings had been the switch to block it by half, and that generated bad function in a lot of programs.
-- All well seasoned numerous reboots PC and PDA and other minors probes.
Anyway, it seems that everything returns to work, the AS (with or without load USB) as conection to Internet.
Shit for Bill Gates.
Thanks to everyone and greetings.

OK, try adding to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Obex\Transpo rts\" the following:
{30a7bc02-59b6-40bb-aa2b-89eb49ef274e}
The model shouldn't make any difference, they all use the same motherboard.
BTW Managed to sort the problem I had using Activesync on IR on my hx2795. I was getting a Remote Networking Error 608. It turned out that I had accidentally set the External GPS setting for GPS Program Port to Com3 which is the IRDA port. It must have been causing some sort of clash. Have now set it to None and Activesync works OK on Infrared.

Most manufactures don't want to spend another penny to satisfied their customer. They prefer produce new model to earn more money.
example:
HP offers 3 yrs support but in that 3 yrs only happened 2/3 times fixes... thats not include OS upgrade... only patches.
They produce good devices but got the worst customer support in the whole damn world.
by that time you device warranty already pass 1 year warranty... so Cooked rom is way to go.

I got this device for about 11 months now, need to wait at least another year before I get new device (and it's not going to be HP that's for sure).
And I should add that they are free cause there are lot's of smart people that are willing to share for free.

Are you sure the sktools can get you more storage space after optimization? Maybe it only deletes some cache and temporary files. I think it will not make the rom smaller.
I hope Tommy can further minimize the rom size (that is, maximize the storage space for our 64MB units) by deleting some unnecessary files, such as the Today's background themes, Templates under \My Documents, all those help, log, txt, bak and temp files under \Windows etc....

No not more storage memory - but more program memory. It changes the font cache size, PIE Input Buffer size and File system cache...

So am I, 11.98MB free storage space with asbestos' ROM on my hx2110. Whereas tommy's ROM has 12.20MB free, then I stay with it. :)
I guess that is one reason I should not post after a really long day at work. I went back and flashed my ROM from the kitchen again and I only have the same ~12 MB. I honestly am not sure what I did or if I was smoking the crack pipe when I posted that but I was not able to get 14 or so MB again. Sorry to have caused any confusion!

I may have to mess around with it some. I have 14.91 MB storage with the base ROM and after I flashed it one time I have a touch over 14 MB left. I flashed like 5 times last night trying to find out what I did again but no luck :(

Lutek I don't have any more the charging problem, though I have random turning on issues, after I added some appointments to my calendar. However I believe that is not a fault of the ROM for this issue, but a general problem of calendar.

Tommy,
I would like to thank you - I have upgraded my iPAQ hx2490b to WM6.1. Upgrade was very smooth. I am testing your ROM since few weeks - for me it is brilliant. Since now I have found only two minor issues:
1. I noticed that after going to WM6.1 from WM6 the activesync connection is rather slow. It is much slower than before. Now the file transfer to my device (via activesync 4.5) is terrible slow. Due to fact that I use external card reader this is minor problem.
2. Regional settings for polish - when I changed regional settings to polish I had two problems which have been solved after a lot of strange activities which I don't know remember now.
- firstly the time format, I prefer to use 18:00 instead of 06:00 pm. It was really hard to change this setting.
- secondly date format: changing the long data format to short was also hard - I was trying to change it several of times and suddenly it started to work - how? I don't know.
This minor problem maks the filling that the ROM settings are not predictable, but after I was able to change it finally I forgot about it.
So this is really good ROM.
One more time thank you and congratulation.
Regards,
Bigu1975

I have tried to cook without even putting any salt and spices. I can only able to trim fat down by less than 0.5MB. I guess the only way is to change (presently hx2410) to a bigger wok.

Try........
1.Extract the SP32407 in an empty folder of your PC.
2.Put the hx2790 in "Pre-BL..." mode.
3.Connect to PC, and AC adapter. "USB is connected" appears on 2790.
4.Press button 1 (Calendar) ONCE. "USB" appears on 2790.

Hello there Tommy - I've been doing some pretty extensive reading here, I would very much appreciate confirmation of two questions I have, so I can proceed to download and install the ROM as provided (MANY THANKS BTW!)
a) I have two Ipaqs, 2490b and 2790. Will the ROM work on both? (I know it says hx2700 series, but this is why I ask. 2790 has a fingerprint reader, so maybe the rom won't support that).
b) When I downgrade, should I ever choose to, you provided a link to a ROMPAGE from HP that also says "Rom for hx2700 series". So... does that mean that it will work for both models? 2490b and 2790?
Thanks so much good buddy. Cheers.

Hi amaurynieto, i have installed tommy's rom on my hx2790b, which has the finger print reader, and it works well... but i had to put it into PB mode to get it to flash (press contact and itask, and reset), the screen went white and then it flashed the new rom.. If you dont do this it comes up with Signature Mismatch or similar error.. i flashed a few weeks ago now so cant remember the error messge..

Ditto on the guy who said thanks very fucking much. (Long time since I saw a comment so bluntly yet correctly put!) - Anyway, I didn't totally get the part about where you said "if you want the version without fingerprint support you need to use my kitchen first".
I will be flashing two devices:
2490b, (almost identical to 2790, only it does not have a fingerprint reader, nor does it have a 624 mhz processor). I assume I can flash the "Without SRS" rom and it will work just fine.
2790, Just flash as listed before, and everything will work out of the box? (including fingerprint reader?) or will I have to tweak it so it will work.
And conversely, should I downgrade to the sp**408 link from HP, will things work out of the box turning back from 6.1?
I'm very eager to get my hands on the 2790 (Ebay'd it), I want to try out 6.1 - I wish there were someplace I could look at screenshots.
Thanks again, buddy. Very Fuckin much. hahaha

@liuroot
Are you using XP on Vista on your main PC (NOT PPC).
Also you may want to search the board....lot's of information about your problem.
@amaurynieto
I have 2490B and was able to use few ROM's including Tommy's and had no problem. Didn't need to do any downgrades at all...just go to white screen and that's it.
If you don't have finger print reader that's OK, my 2490B come with the finger print reader drivers preloaded from HP and I don't have it so there is no harm.
What Tommy is referring to by 'use my kitchen' is that you can disable the driver from putting in the ROM (you can do that as well but i don't see the point) and create your 'own' ROM with some of the stuff removed that you don't need.
As for the ROM with OUT SRS...SRS is some sort of driver for sound.
Tommy created one with out it cause someone requested it.
As for the 'bad' words, for some people who's english is a second language (including me) may not be the best way of saying Thank you.

Again, believe it or not? If hx2410/hx2110, maybe hx2415 too, is already running in wm6.0 or wm6.1, it can be flashed among any wm6.0/6.1 roms without starting from the 1.00.00L step.
Of course the roms must be for "hx2000" series.
So you may test/try any version: tommy_adsl's, samz's, PDAVIET's, or roms cooked by yourself.

You might want to use the image found in "Wm5.0 for hx2750_1.00.00.L_ENG" folder instead of "Wm5.0 for hx2000_1.00.00.L_ENG", although the latter one should be universal. And again, folow all the steps described times and times again. What is your current image? WM5 something? You might want to downgrade first and then go step-by-step to WM6.1.

Has someone problems with tomtom 6.032?
In my 2750 dont work the bluetooth when i have installed the tomtom.
Is possible to correct this problem?
thanks
To fix the TOMTOM issue you need to delete the Bluetooth Files the TOMTOM installation installs that replaces the builtin files.
Dates are 16-07-07 on the files Tomtom files.
Delete the two files:
BTCoreIf.dll
BtSdkCE30.dll
Soft Reset (windows will re-install the ones that come with windows)
Tomtom will still work and windows will go back to normal.
The issue also affected my ability to change the sound volume, it would change and go back to no sound.
Hope this helped.

Try altering HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm\IrDA\DevAddr to 3431 hex (13361 decimal) then reset your device and try beaming a file.
i fix the problem, thanks very much.

I tried new Yurrix's ROM (based on official OS) and I noticed that power of WM6.1 (speed of calculation ways in GPS software, speed of rendering...etc) is worse of approx 30%. For exemple - calculation of route (2000km) take 32 sec. for WM6.0 but calculatiom of the same route on WM6.1 take opprox 47 sec !

Do you know for which OS and how is NavSW programmed (AutoMAPA)?

Today I have tried Yurrix ROM on my hx2490b.
I was using it only 30min and I made quick decision to go back to Tommy's ROM (this time to the last updated). The following reasons made my decision:
1. The system sometimes was unstable. Few times I had to make soft reset.
2. Strange problem with CF card - sometimes after putting it to iPAQ, device was showing strange message about unknown driver and asked about proper driver name. After choosing OK or CANCEL the card wasn't recognize and I needed put it out and put it back.
3. Strange problem with LEDs - it happens they both starting to blinking and suddenly they stopping to blinking  I didn't find the reason.
4. TCPMP benchmark results: on Tommy's ROM: 370%, on Yurrix' ROM 317%
5. Minor Problem: Free RAM (after reset): Tommy's ROM ~35.82MB, Yurrix ROM max 33MB
6. Minor problem: lack of my favorite IPAQ Wireless application. :)

Lutek,
Additional question About AutoMapa.
You mentioned that WM6.1 is slower about 30% then WM6.0 in aspect of trace calculation (you gave example with 2kkm distance).
What with the overall performance of AM5x? My AM5x's animation (refresh rate) is terrible slow during navigation (3D buildings) - do you know if it is the same on WM6.0 (better or worse)?

Using route's file "test kalkulacji" from pdaclub.pl , time of calculation take :

Hello, sorry to be a pain, I've read and reread this thread and the other one plenty of times and I can't seem to get this working on my PDA, now I am worried that if I keep trying and failing the battery will die and I'll be screwed. I have the Ipaq HX2110, It came with WM03SE, I then upgraded it to WM5, I then discovered WM6, First I couldn't do anything atall (I would get Sync errors) I then realised it was because I was using Vista, I onw have a VMWare installation of XP, this is allowing me to update the roms. However, when I install the 6.1 rom update, it installs, then it takes ages for the blue bar to come across the screen, then it just hangs at the very end, I can't understand what's going wrong, any help would be appreciated.
Sorry about the essay.

Hi there,
first of all: thank you tommy for the grat job you are doin' here and for sharing it with us all.
i've upgraded my hx2790 to wm6.1 (rom with srs wow),almost everything works great, i've got some little issues that i can easily ignore (ms wireless manager sometimes works, sometimes not; sync mail with live messenger doesnt work, and often using fingerprint for security on power-on i've got an error message telling that i've got to reset my device for fix some problems ). these problems for me are not important neither rilevant, but i hope that these informations can be useful to you for your next recipe ;)
but i've got a big problem, very annoyng: the writing\reading speed over any SD it's extremely slow..
this happens only if i move files using the native explorer, if i use programs like resco explorer everything it's ok and this can be a good workaround..but, it "impossible" to sync files using activesync (i've to use a card reader instead, another workaround) and it's impossible to download any files from internet using IE or Opera (3,12MB takes 12min circa if saved on sd, and a handful os seconds if saved on internal memory)
using tomtom it takes a lot to find the city\address i type because the reading issue; "encryption" options it's constalntly checked and impossible to uncheck: could be this the reason for the slow r\w problem over storage cards?
any idea?
thanks to all in advance :)

Only difference for the normal PDA with no phone is the better PIE (zoom function). If you use a PDA with phone then you also have the threaded SMS.

Normally pressing the RESET button is only a Soft-reset, which is a frequent practice. In your case, probably the battery power was too weak.
Try.....
Take out the battery for few minutes, put it back and the cover. Connect to AC adapter, then RESET again, or enter Pre-BL.... "USB" mode to proceed ROM flash.

Take out the battery for few minutes, put it back and the cover. Connect to AC adapter, then RESET again, or enter Pre-BL.... "USB" mode to proceed ROM flash.
;)
Hahaha! All this hassle because I didn't have the battery cover on? That's crazyness.
Thanks anyway :)

Hi, Tommy
Thanks for your hard work.
I've upgraded the ROM on my iPAQ 2790, hpuuu said update completed.
But my 2790 can't boot anymore. I've tried to perform hard reset and reconnect to cradle with power supply.
Can you tell me how to recover my iPAQ?

Hi,
in the "New version (1.5.2008)" are only two bugs (the charging problem via USB [after charging you need to on/off you pda to update status bar] and encryption problem). I'm using this rom aprox. two weeks and I didn't found other bugs. It seems to be stable ... :)
Try to do clean reset first and then hard reset. It will help you ...

Found another bug in the 1.5.2008 version. I flashed and reset as stated in post #1. hx2495b, ENG settings. The date format displays as d/M/yy, even though my regional settings were M/d/yy. If I switch to something else and back to M/d/yy, it displays correctly.
I also get frequent times where internet apps lockup (Opera, IE, ActiveSync). Checking the iPAQ Wireless tool, it says 'Driver not loaded'. Pushing the reset button seems to be the only fix.

If not, there are a lot of applications that it does that: Wisbar Advance, SPB PocketPlus, SpB Mobile Shell, etc.

I am trying to upgrade my Ipaq and I am already having some problems. First I have put my IPAQ in Pre-BL mode. My screen says Pre-BL 1.00.04 and when I put the Ipaq on the craddle, it says USB connected. I then hitted the calendar botton and the IPAQ said USB. however the PC says USB device unknown (not installed) and activesync does nothing. HPRUU does not see the IPAQ. If I reboot the IPAQ, it says 1.00.00 H FRA.
I then tried a soft reset and connected the IPAQ to the craddle. This time activesync started and HPRUU detected my IPAQ OK but listed my current language as unknown and refused to proceed with the upgrade.
I am stuck....
Any suggestions?
Varso
PS. My IPAQ is a HX2790 running WM5 french. My PC runs XP SP2 with Activesync 4.5
BTW I do not desperately need WM6.1. I just want 4GB SDHC support. If I can get that with WM5, I would be happy.

First of all, Thank you for your efforts to improve PDA's OS.
Secondly, please forgive my poor English, I will try to make it understtod.
I have an HX2410 (WM2003 SE, Korean).
I made it from Korean WM2003 to English WM5.
It is, however, 1.00.01H.
I CAN'T MAKE IT TO 1.00.00H
In normal boot load situation, (pushing 2+3+reset & 1 button)
SP32408 won't work, with error message. (attached)
I used several ROM file
SP33752_HX2000_E_ROM_1.00.01 (2007-04-02)
SP32405_HX2000_K_ROM_1.00.00 (2006-04-17)

KOR-hx2000_PPC2003_downgrade
KOR-hx2000_WM5_Upgrade
If any ROM will work, change nbf file with SP32408's,

Hi,
Many people faced similar upgrade problems with hx2110/hx2115/hx2410/hx2415, (64MB ROM) from WM2003se to WM6.0/6.1
In short, even in your step "<II> 2)", you have to (I don't know why) run "hpruu.exe" in the "1.00.00.L" folder, then swap to the .nbf of sp32408, before hitting the "update". Proceed to wm6.0/wm6.1 in same principle.
Be sure in Pre-BL..."USB" mode to start Flash.
Fore more details, please see post #353.
It proved that's the way to success, at least for several times with my hx2110.
Good Luck!

Hey Tommy, what exactly did you change/fix in the latest versions? I couldn't find a release log or anything(and I'm sorry if there is).
I have what I believe to be the first version of the rom with SRS(02/08/08), so is there any major reason to flash it again? Sure I found bugs, but nothing I can't live with(mainly the nasty problem with "driver not loaded", because of the second Wireless Manager, oh yes and not being able to tell if the encryption on my SD card is turned on(which seems to be(thought it can't be), but still everything can be read on a desktop computer (thank heavens!!! :) ))).
I read that there were problems with WPA encrypted networks(possibly around the 35th page), are there really? Haven't had the chance to try it out yet, but WEP work okay.
So at the end, is there a good reason for me to install all my cr*p(sorry) all over again with the new rom? I really hate clean reseting my iPAQ :o .
Okay, thanks for the answer in advance.

Tommy I am using the previous version of you cooked ROM not the latest. Actually I believe its the latest you made without SRS. But I noticed this, that I am saying with WiFi. So... I believe... it would be nice for the other software to co-exist. Now as all of us know different devices, even if they are the sam model, can produce different issues. In my case I noticed that I could overcome the problem at about 95% of the times that I had problem with my Wifi (which weren't so many, there should be about 6-8 time in about lets say from when you cooked the specific ROM--more than 1-2 months).
PS. Sorry for my delay to answer.. I am very busy with my work at this period of time and I rarely check the forum!

at first big thanks for this ROM.
my little notes about upgrading hx2410 ipaq to WM6.1:
1. after final upgrade (as described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=372799 ) to WM6.1 I have few issues like: no adding appointments, no adding tasks, some errors, and missing files.
2. I struggle whole day and night to perform a Hard Reset (HR) on this device. all docs in internet stated that HR on hx2410 is done via pressing calendar+itask and reset switch for few seconds - but always this only resets clock and do soft reset.
So finally I have found a way to do Hard Reset on 2410:
press CALENDAR+MESSAGING+POWER and press and hold RESET for about 2-4 secs
and then release RESET, but still HOLD remaining keys.
screen with "Formatting PS..." text should be displayed.
After this HR all appointments and tasks issues gone. :]
ps
and one more note - I try to make pim, contacts and emails backup by lastest SPB Backup 1.6.3 on older WM5 OS and restore it on new upgraded WM6.1 - unfortunately without success. After restore Appointments database was corrupted, Contacts application don't run anymore, and E-Mails aren't restored too.
as stated here: http://www.pocketpcmag.com/cms/node/6151 "Sprite Backup supports "intelligent" restores across ROM updates".
Anyway SPB Backup doesn't support restoring pim data across ROM updates. :(
Thanks again and good luck :-)

looks like problem with template in My_Documents/Templates. maybe you overwrite this with older one upon restoring MY Cocuments folder?
try temporary rename Templates folder and check.

Thank you tester2 and sliders7. I've solved the problem. Yup, you're right tester2, there's problem with Templates folder at my document. I've deleted that folder accidentally. And the solution is pretty simple : i made a new blank Templates folder, and voiiilaa.. Word Mobile new document function back again without any prob.
Thanks all.. :D

Has anyone tried the foldable keyboard ( FA118A ) with a hx2000 device after the upgrade to wm6.1?
If so, does it work without the driver or does the driver for WM5 work OK?
This is the physically connected folding keyboard, not the bluetooth one.

@ aspheric:
Foldable Keyboard works under WM 6.1.
I installed the driver 2.0.0.8 for the keyboard.
Guess that's the WM5 driver.
Works great on my HX2790. :)

Hi
I'm new in this forum. I bought an ipaq214 2 months ago. Today it got freezed (i don't know why) I think I'll have to do an hard reset. So I thought would be great to upgrade the operating system to a new version. Now I've WM6 classic. I've never done this before so I don't know which ROM is good for my palm and which not and I don't know how to do it (I went through some wizards but they were related to hx2000 series).
Can someone help me or at least give me some link that can explain me things?
Thanks

Tommy, you should write step by step clearly on how to make a customed ROM for hx2000 series.
Thus everyone can try based on their preferences and share the problems, experiences with others. In this manner, we will get more advanced users to improve the hx2000 community.

That's excellent news. Thank you very much. There's nothing to stop me upgrading now.

Hi,
I don't have this problem. My explorer remember all settings.
However, change registry from
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main]
"ZoomSetting"=dword:00000002
to
"ZoomSetting"=dword:00000000
