View Full Version : FLIPSLIDE v0.95 RELEASED
chetstriker
14th April 2008, 03:18 AM
Added a quick fix file for users with 0.95 installed
-Fixes the huge weather icon
-All programs including subfolders show up under programs
-volume control under settings just controls flipslide sounds not pda volume.
-also an option in flipslidelaunch.ini to turn of sound always just add false to the bottom.
-Tasks are organized properly and tasks with no due date don't display 1/1/01
Just unzip FlipSlide_0.95_Fix.zip below and copy to your \program files\FlipSlide directory on your pda, also delete your flipslide.ini and flipslidelaunch.ini files in the home \ directory.
Enjoy.
The new version which is dedicated to speed and size is coming along nicely, I may be able to finish it this weekend. It is about 7 times smaller in size and should hopefully be atleast 5 times quicker for load time and runtime.

Works good on my Axim X51V using WM6.1 but can I customize it? Don't use Media Player for example.. Also on the first page it shows tasks but no appointments! Anyway it's a great thing, one of the best I've tested so far!

About the calendar, The calendar button on the front page is your daily planner. It shows only appointments for the day, you can press the arrors above it to go forward and back days and pressing the center bar returns you to your current day. If any on the front page icons have a green bar under it then that means you have data in it.
For the QVGA option, I do plan on building one however it's a little difficult because i only have a vga pda and I want to design it differently for QVGA, this program was designed to not have to use a stylus and take advantage of the large display. I want to use a diffent touch interface for QVGA that better maximizes the space for it's specs. But yes, it's in my plans.
For the video link, i've have problems getting one uploaded because i can't find the software to retrieve it from my camera an they don't allow you to download it. And software recorders for the PDA always seem to make it look choppy which it i not. If anyone doesn't mind recording a short vid and put it on youtube or somewhere i can access it I would be very greatful.
About customization, My next release I plan to allow changes to default programs for media, contact, tasks, dialer and such. I also plan of making this skinable. I definately agree withyou, I also don't use media player as my default player.
Thank you very much for all your feedback. I will keep posting more, I usualy create new releases each week or two.

Hey TacoLoco, I was wondering if you could give me more info about your calendar problem, like do you have appointments in microsoft calendar for the day? and if so are your appointments a single occurance or weekly, monthly or yearly appointments that are in microsoft calendar but not in flipslide?
also i was wondering what PDA and OS your using.
Any further feedback would be very helpful.

Ok, i'm starting the QVGA program today, It will probably be by this weekend or at latest by next before it's up. But It seems enough people are interested.
Since I don't actualy own a QVGA PDA, and virtualization runs unrealistically slow, I may need testing help from people along the way.

Hello,
This programs seems really great. Moreover, I have an X51v, and i am pretty happy to see some stuff for it ... HTC devices take too much threads !
Anyway, I am far from my computer at the moment, and havent' access to activesync ... could someone post the cab ?
Also, I have read this thread and looked at the screenshot, and even if i have not installed it yet, I have already a few comments :
1 - I think the first improvement you should implement, is allow us to choose the target of the links ... I use mortplayer for music, tcpmp for vid, xnview for pictures .... don't know wmp ;-)
2 - A Simple weather screen would be great, Something like the one of spb Mobile Shell 2 for exemple.
Thank you for this App !

LupuX, the program is actually a windows installer for the latest version so you can't run it directly from your PDA, I will try to create both installers from now on.
TacoLoco, I'm actually using the same PDA and OS as you. I will try to download pocketinformant and see if my program is having some sort of clash. You might want to install .NET comact framework 3.5 if you don't already have it. I'm not sure if something is different from .NET CF 1 or 2. Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this.
Miljbee, I couldn't agree more. The next version will absolutely allow for changing default programs.
And Thank you everyone else who is willing to test the QVGA version, I expect to be posting soon.

Some tips.
Make sure you have the .NET compact Framework 3.5 runtime installed, the link is below, this should help with calendar items and the Microsoft.WindowsMobile.Status error hopefully.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=E3821449-3C6B-42F1-9FD9-0041345B3385&displaylang=en
As far as speed goes, make sure you install this to the device and not to a memory card because it's much slower to run. It will take a while to start up because many resources are being loaded into memory at start up and there are many initializations happening.
I will try to increase speed though optimizations, there are definately many I can make. I haven't had any speed issues once the program is running, however my axim runs at 700mhz. This might have something to do with it.
For the calendar issue, keep in mind that the calendar on the main screen is actually an agenda, it shows appointments only for thew current day. The arrows above it allow you to go forward or back in days. If a green line appears under any of the main screen icons it means there is data in it.
Let me know if you are still having problems with it after installing .NET CF 3.5 above and have switched with the arrows to a day that has appointment, hopefully not many people do on sundays.
As for the .INI file it will be on you PDA in the base directory "/" on the device and called FlipSlideLaunch.ini you can copy it to your PC to modify it and then copy it back when your done, however most settings can be changed under settings. The two things that it can do that settings cannot right now is change your weather zip code which is the first line, and your default sync program which is the second to last line.
I would highly appreciate it if people are having it still running slow AFTER starting that they could post their processor speed and model and OS.
Also for everyone who PDA it's running good on, if they could list their processor speed model and OS this way I can try to keep a database for people so they know what to expect and I can know better what optimizations to create.
And thank you every one for posting results this will help make the next build much better.

ChetStriker,
This is a great UI for WM6.x, I managed to install the 0.9 on my Dopod D810(aka HTC P3600). I am running WM6.1 cooked rom.
Flipslide run very slowly in my phone with the above mentioned OS. I have .Net 3.5 installed. It seems like all the screen is running in slow motion mode and the calendar is all empty (not appointment shown at all).
I love the UI, it is so much more intuitive to use. I hope you can improve the speed on P3600 as it has only 400 Mhz CPU.
Thanks for the great software.

Yes, currently all pictures are for a VGA screen and are automatically scaled down in half for QVGA devices which in general have slower processors. I'm have just finished making it skinable and i'm creating pictures for it that are half the size which should double the speed of everything.
Also it will allow full control over creating your own icons, sounds and backgrounds. Which I would love people to work on.
I will post back as soon as i'm done with the picture conversion.
And once again, thank you too everyone giving feedback. It's hard to tell how everything is working on so many PDAs when i only have one.

Just to report that it works on a TyTN up to a point. The calendar and task items on the Home page don't work. Also how does one access the options to turn off the annoying sounds?
Not sure about the interface being slow; however others I have used are much quicker.
In summary, a very good start. What we now need is the ability to add functionality at will, ie for the tool to be fully user customisable and skinable.
Hope this helps.

IMPORTANT!!! - please delete the FlipSlideLaunch.ini file in your PDA base directory if you have ever installed this program, otherwise it will not take advantage of the speed boost.
Also, if you have a VGA device and it's still slow you may want to use the QVGA theme, there suprisingly isn't that much of a visable difference. To do that just change the the FlipSlideLaunch.ini in the base directory of your PDA so that the line that says Default is changed to QVGADefault.
Please let me know how much this new version speeds stuff up??
Thanks Chet Striker

Cheststriker,
Just tried version 095, does seem marginally quicker but hard to say. All the other issues I pointed out yesterday are still there, eg inability to turn off sounds.
I note that on the programmes page, scrolling up or down by gesturing, rather than using the up/down arrows, means scrolling does not stop until you get to the other end of the list. So if you start at A it carries on scrolling regardless until it gets to Z and vice versa.
I take it that all this is a work in progress so congratulations for where you have got to so far. There are so many of us out here who are waiting for a flexible, stable, fully customisable alternative GUI to Windows.
Do carry on the good work!

Hey Wacky.Banana,
Yes, up and down gestures flip between screens like left and right except on the programs screen. On the programs screen up and down slide through programs, to stop it just press once anywhere on the screen to stop scrolling.
For sounds you have two options, from any screen other than the programs screen flip up to get to settings and then use the volume slider to adjust sound volume, or you can change the sounds on the your PDA under the /program files/FlipSlide/Themes/QVGADefault (if you have a QVGA device otherwise Default) and switch out the .wav files with blank sound or replace with sounds you would like better.
Also all the pictures used in the whole program are located there so you can change them, just make sure they have the same name and are the same dimensions. You can create your own theme folder too and put the pictures and sounds in. Put QVGA somewhere in the theme folder name if it's QVGA and change the second line in the FlipSlideLaunch.ini file to be your theme folders name

There seems to be major issues left and some i will need help with.
1) The weather Icon being to big: This will be a quick fix it's unfortunately something i can't see on the virtual QVGA pda i'm running but i know how to solve it easily.
2) For many people the appointments are not displaying: This is something i will need help with, I was hoping somebody could export their outlook appointments so i can try to recreate it on my PDA. So far it appeas that is might be the difference between pocket pc working and smart phone not but if someone will due this for me than i can get to the bottom of it quickly.
3) For those of you who who are still having speed issues: I have thought of a way to dramatically speed things up however it will require some major reprogramming.
4) programs listed in Sub-Folders under programs not showing up: This will be a very easy and quick fix.
5) Annoyed of sounds: I will chuck in a entry under the FlipSlideLaunch.ini file to turn on or off flipslide sounds which will be very quick to do.
So two things i could really use help with are :
1) an appointment export from outlook from somebody having appointment problems.
2) If somebody happens to have a video camera and a PDA where flipslide is working smoothly, I would love it if somebody could create a video for me so people can get a taste of what it's like. (I know for a fact Axim x51v's run it perfectly)
THank you everyone for hanging in there and giving me feed back, Hopefully the last of these issues should be resolved quickly.

I just installed the latest version (running windows professional 6 on a T-mobile wing), and tried it first on the storage card, but it would crash before starting. (The previous version I could run from the storage card). I then installed it in main memory, and it runs.
For me it's just too slow. It takes forever to load, and seem sluggish in operation.
Also it lists all tasks in the order of month due:
02/28/09 comes before 02/3/08.
All undated tasks are given a date of 01/01/01.
Also I don't see the weather anywhere?
It seems to have good potential though.

-Fixes the huge weather icon
-All programs including subfolders show up under programs
-volume control under settings just controls flipslide sounds not pda volume.
-also an option in flipslidelaunch.ini to turn of sound always just add false to the bottom.
Just unzip flipslide_fix.zip and copy to your \program files\FlipSlide directory on your pda, also delete your flipslide.ini and flipslidelaunch.ini files in the home \ directory.
And thanks for the help eddy, If you open oulook and click file->import and export->export to a file->personal folder file (.pst)-> selecet your calendar only under personal folder-> click browse and point it to your desktop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Then just zip and post.
Thanks for the help

It seems that you do something wrong with the links to programs. Whichever program I touch I always get another program to execute. Besides I don't think it is a nice solution to show all programs in one flat list. I have added subfolders on programs to ease access to my programs.

-Tasks are organized properly and tasks with no due date don't display 1/1/01

Enjoy.
The new version which is dedicated to speed and size is coming along nicely, I may be able to finish it this weekend. It is about 7 times smaller in size and should hopefully be atleast 5 times quicker for load time and runtime.
