This is my YouTube search/player application. Bit like the latest CorePlayer.

It allows you to search for videos in a nice friendly Pocket PC 2003 and greater app and then stream the full FLV video (not miniscule MPEG4 versions) within its own player.

This app can also download the FLV videos for offline use and also then extract the soundtrack to an MP3 file.

The app is written in a mixture of .net and C so you need the .net runtime, v2 or v3.5:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=e3821449-3c6b-42f1-9fd9-0041345b3385&displaylang=en

The video player overlay is hacked out of TCPMP and the FLV part is based on FFMPEG.

....CHANGELOG....

youtubeplay v1.0.0.11 updated 24/11/08, changes:

New - Fully works on Pocket PC 2003 now, found the horrid bug that stopped it
New - Will open and play VP6 (On2) FLV files, slow but should work
New - Uses newer version of FFMPEG SVN from a few days ago
Fix - Fullscreen should work if you start in landscape mode now

youtubeplay v1.0.0.10 updated 11/11/08, changes:

New - Added the facility to extract the audio as an MP3 from any saved FLV
Fix - HTC Streaming Media option should now work again
NOTE - I have now removed any efforts at getting this to work on devices with less than WM5, just wouldn't work.

youtubeplay v1.0.0.9 updated 27/10/08, changes:

Fix - "Failed to get security cookie" message, this was caused by YouTube changes. I have now entirely changed the way this bit works so that it is more like the flash player and should be a bit more resiliant to changes.
Fix - May work on Pocket PC 2003 devices again, please test.

youtubeplay v1.0.0.8 updated 10/10/08, changes:

Fix - -3 play error, which was caused by internal YouTube changes and some bad code!

youtubeplay v1.0.0.7 updated 12/5/08, changes:

Fix - Crash when switching to play video (problem on Kaiser ROM "Mobile Vista v1.3" and maybe others)
New - Added AppToDate support - had to change download location to my server
Fix - Can now reliably retrieve up to 50 results
New - Reverted config and results forms back to non fullscreen to enable SIP and menu
New - Hardware keys - dpad up/down = vol up/down, dpad right = ffwd, dpad left = back

youtubeplay v1.0.0.6 updated 8/5/08, changes:

New - All YouTube feeds now available
New - Related videos
New - Associate youtubeplay with FLV files

youtubeplay v1.0.0.5 updated 7/5/08, changes:

New - Added Save functionality
New - Added AV offset config setting to tweak lip sync
New - Added config setting to alter fullscreen rotation
New - Version number displayed in config screen
Fix - Landscape fullscreen now should be the right way round

youtubeplay v1.0.0.4 updated 7/5/08, changes:

New - Full screen application now - more space
New - Removed horrible toolbars, buttons back
New - VGA, QVGA, Portrait and landscape support
New - Config screen
New - Option to play smaller MP4 version of videos in HTC Streaming Media application
New - Buffer size configuration option
New - Option to set number of videos returned
New - Click on the search button again to get more results for same search
New - Load FLV video from file option
New - Made smaller
New - Video overlay set to GDI - better on Kaiser
Fix - Better error handling
Fix - numerous small fixes

youtubeplay updated 16/4/08, changes:

New black look
Removed buttons, added toolbar
VGA portrait support (only testing in emulator)
Click on video for fullscreen
Backlight keepalive

....

Things planned: Support for YouTube logons, video uploads, user favorites and better caching/buffering.

Things not planned: Other video sites.

Known issues: Square mode not quite right. Other character sets (Chinese etc.) don't work apparently. Close button sometimes takes a few pushes.

Everybody should note that this application will eat bandwidth, no consideration has been made for data consumed, so Wifi/ActiveSync or unlimited 3g only, be prepared for a big data bill otherwise. Won't work well on GPRS anyway as FLV vids are quite sizeable.

WOW! GReat App!

May I make a request? Anyway you can make the "skin" a black color by any chance? My entire phone is customized to be in a dark tone and the white just looks very out of whack. Thank you very much for such a great app! Keep it up!

It just shuts down as soon as it buffers the video for me. It searches just fine and all, but right after buffering it closes itself. Tried a soft reset, but no change.

On a side note, would this be able to function as a stand alone FLV player? So that we could download FLV clips off the web, save them on the storage card and watch them later? I've tried the TCPMP w/ flash plugin solution but it never works for me.

Very nice.

Can I make a few suggestions - Can the buttons be made larger and more finger-friendly, can the soft keys either be used for something or left out, and I dont think the d-pad does anything when the video is playing.

Also can the buttons be made rounder instead of square.

Works well but one thing i've noticed is that when I search it doesn't give me that many options. Like i type in "Ric Flair" and it only gives me 4 videos to choose from. Obviously there are alot more than that, unless im doing something wrong.

awesome program! a few things though, i'm running this on a sprint mogul, no2chem 2.0 ROM, when i play the video in landscape mode the video starts towards the bottom of the screen and blocks the 'stop/full/cancel' buttons, i have to close the video by just poking in the general direction of where i THINK the stop button is...

also another suggestion, perhaps an option for more search results, right now i'm pulling only 4 or so and i would like to be able to get every video that's available.

besides that, this is an awesome program, thank you!!!

Still early version, literally just it going today!

Landscape mode and VGA are next on the list for testing and fixing.

Currently it is set to return only 5 results, just to make it quick! Will include some config options in the next few versions to change this.

Download function - noted, might also be able to include FLV to other format conversion.

Skins and finger friendly buttons etc. again noted but low on the priority list.

Works perfect now!! This blows coreplayer's youtube away easily! Can't wait for updates.

My only gripes right now are the limited search results, and how the program looks. (I know you've already addressed both of these) Everything else is wonderful.

One issue I have is that when going to full screen, it shows in portrait for me, but upside down (right handed landscape instead of left-handed), not a big deal, i can just flip my phone over

New version:

1) Next button, allows you to retrieve more search results.
2) Slightly smaller thumbnails, this is the largest size returned from YouTube, no stretching now.
3) Video should now stop when the app loses focus.
4) Reduced the size slightly - should get smaller with every release as I get rid of unused code.
5) New Play/Pause and Stop buttons, Stop will return video to the start in the next version.
6) Now has icon

Works fine on Treo 750 running WM6.

Only flaw is the pause stop etc buttons are under the screen. This is no doubt due to the Treo's square screen. If you tap the screen on the video at the spot where the button is behind, the button action works.

I don't imagine it would be too difficult to make it a simple FLV player, would it?

Perhaps add an ability to manually put in a URL to an FLV? If you can make it follow redirect commands, that would also be helpful.

Great app, some things id like to see though :-)
- "Keep alive" when watching a video
- I'd change "cancel" to "back"
- I'd also change the search layout to something like this (http://phonedifferent.com/images/2007/07/review/youtube1.jpg)
with the search box on top and the buttons next to each other at the bottom

and I found a small issue when viewing a video and you click cancel and want to view the video again the button is disabled, you need to select another video before you can go back to the initial one..

But it looks great and works like a charm :-)
thanks!

Nice app. Running well on my vogue. Is there a way to change the landscape view the other way? I looked in the registry and couldn't find the settings for that. I view my apps in left handed landscape (slingbox, tcpmp). Also, is there a way to go back to previous videos from the search screen? Just say I'm browsing the list of videos, and I go to the next page, can I go back to the previous page or do I have to start over from the beginning?

Awesome app! I think this is by far the most elegant solution to playing YT videos on WM. I do mobile device development myself, so I do understand it's really difficult to troubleshoot all these issues. I wouldn't mind helping you out with the UI changes everyone is clamouring for, if you want to continue working with the core functionality/stability issues.

And hrshybartbone, welcome to the forums. However, please learn how to report bugs - the term "technical mumbo jumbo" does not help developers at all. It is precisely the error messages that help us track down the problem to fix it. That goes for anyone else who might want to report bugs :)

Would it be possible to somehow display how much of a clip has already been cached (in % or at least kB)? Would help a lot on connections which are too slow to play a clip in real time so you can know when to start watching and to see whether it is still loading!

Also, on a VGA display the play, pause, etc. icon are really tiny, but i still manage to hit them...

Wow - beats the pants of coreplayer. Great app - looking forwards to the version where number returned can be configured.

Did you check out the latest, 1.2.3 version of CP? Apart from the lack of stereo AAC+ sound (which soon will be implemented), it's VERY good. And, don't forget youtubeplay is based on the old and less efficient AVC / AAC libraries, meaning higher CPU usage / lower FPS.

Of course, youtubeplay's price is unbeatable and is indeed a decent app.

Props to milesmowbray... nice app ;-)

For Bratag.... 'Beats' is a stong word with no facts to back it up....
CorePlayer 'lessens' the overhead by removing the FLV layer from the picture.. its as simple as that (if this is what your referring too).

PPL need to understand that like Real Audio/Video.... FLV and the Flash Container is a 'locked' ecosystem by Adobe and imho a poor design for the long run (its also not a very effecient container... why? For example Double stacking a fast MPEG-4 file into a slow FLV container is like trying put a 4" pipe in a 2" hole). We would rather ppl stick to using MPEG-4 or our Matroska Container both of which are open, fast and well documented containers.

Back to Bratag though... if you can benchmark and show that I am wrong.....

One last thing.... Current remaining YouTube CorePlayer connectivity issues will go away over the next couple of releases as we do two things....
- Automate the YouTube Quality Control 'seeking'... this will help incase one setting appears to hang (spinning buffering icon).
- Add Progressive Downloading... this way if CP encouters a bad connectivity problem (but can still access the stream) it will then just buffer the content and then begin playback.

Although a great concept I get better /quicker results and streaming with m.youtube.com and the Streaming Media Player combo.

To be honest, I used to be diehard fan of m.youtube.com, but streaming the REAL YouTube makes for awesome quality on our devices. m.youtube.com comes nowhere close to the level of streaming audio and
video quality you get from using an FLV solution like YouTube Player. Bottom line, m.youtube.com is really intended for lesser non 3G devices. YouTube Player shows the potential our devices really have.

This really is an awesome app, I would love
1. the option to see related videos,
2. have maybe 10 thumbnails by default,
3. and the option to at least see people's youtube comments.
4. the option to login and use saved playlists, vids, etc.

Not to get into a tit-for-tat... You totally skipped over what my point was... FLV is a disease and should be avoided at all costs on ANY mobile device for multimedia. Current reports of 'studdering' in CP with YT will be gone once we add the progressive downloading support. On your point is that the CP is confusing? I'm not even gonna go there. Also, if you look at our YT UI... its almost the same as the current m.youtube.com but we have omited some features till later on when we add it as a module with login, uploading, related, and bookmarking.

No idea, doesn't happend here.

But if you have found a video that always stops after 1 second, send me the reference and I can try it here.

EVERYONE: When reporting possible bugs/issues it is useful to provide as much info as possible:

What PDA? What version of WM? What version of Compact Framework? Exact error message?

Anything you think might help in tracking down the problem. If none of this is supplied I will just ignore you.

I think this may lower the tone of the software slightly!

I don't really want to add any other video sites as none of them have a nice consistent API like YouTube:

http://code.google.com/apis/youtube/overview.html

Some have RSS feeds but these don't allow searches. Web page scraping is not going to happen here as the slightest change to the page and it stops working.

If anyone knows any video sites with an API then maybe I could look at adding them in the future.

Just checked and my ROM's running Compact Framework v2 (something else to upgrade in the next ROM release!). Just installed v3.5 (checked on cgautil.exe) and the same issue happens.

It installs fine, and shows the program icon in the Programs list. Clicking it produces the windows wait symbol for approx half a second, then the wait symbol disappears but nothing else happens - no program launches and no error message. Task Manager shows no extra applications running, but viewing processes in Task Manager shows youtubeplay.exe running with 1.53M memory usage and 0% CPU

Like I said, I'm sure it's something in the ROM - probably just something Dutty fixed and I don't because he knows what he's doing! :)

Nice work but pretty hard to code!

Also Windows Mobile has only 2 fonts available for the GUI - Tahoma and Courier!

Good work though, I will try and use some of it sometime.

Add another one for this issue - my ROMs based on the 19209 build too, so my guess is that's the culprit. Shame, this looks REALLY cool!!

Still, maybe when a new OS comes out, it'll be compatible :)

Thanks for the time and effort you've put into this Milesmowbray!

Same issue here.

Thank you sooo much this is a great app!!

This is my YouTube search/player application. Bit like the latest CorePlayer.

It allows you to search for videos in a nice friendly Windows Mobile app and then plays the full FLV video (not miniscule MPEG4 versions) with its own player.

The app is written in a mixture of .net and C so you need the .net runtime, v2.

The video player overlay is hacked out of TCPMP and the FLV part is based on FFMPEG.

Latest version will alway be attached here.

youtubeplay last updated 16/4/08, changes:

New black look
Removed buttons, added toolbar
VGA portrait support (only testing in emulator)
Click on video for fullscreen
Backlight keepalive

Things planned: Support for all YouTube feeds, logons. Saving/loading FLV to/from file

Things not planned: Other video sites

Known issues: Sometime crashes downloading thumbnails (rarely), landscape mode not right

Everybody should note that this application will eat bandwidth, no consideration has been made for data consumed, so Wifi/ActiveSync or unlimited 3g only, be prepared for a big data bill otherwise. Won't work well on GPRS anyway as FLV vids are quite sizeable.

Comments / suggestions welcome.

Thank you very much, this works great :)

Can I change the screen orientation for the fullscreen mode?

edit: And the playback is MUCH smoother than with coreplayer :)

Try Smart Flash with Macromedia Flash Plugin both are freeware and can be found on www.pocketpcfreeware.mobi.

WOW! this is hands down one of the best apps i have on my phone now. Thanks dude. I hope you continue development of this, it already rocks.

edit: After using this app for a while im still impressed with how fast it is, will you consider an option to use the gui to search for videos and then when you click play it will open in TCPMP? I like alot of the features tcpmp offers, as far as saving and playing options.

He uses a stripped down version of tcpmp to make it run fast and have smaller footprint. I dont think there would be any reason to do this. If you want that just get the hacked tcpmp with flv support, use pie to browse then it plays with tcpmp.

Sure there is. First it wouldn't affect the app for those who didn't want to use the option. Second, you could save the videos. Third, you could affect the playback speed. Fourth, you could skip around in the video, during or after play with the slider. Fifth, its very cumbersome to navigate the youtube website using pie. I really dont see a reason not to do it, but its not my app or my call. Just a suggestion.

My only problem with this app (which is sortof evident in the picture in post #191) is the buttons at the bottom!!! They are all very close together, and with VGA, they are also small.

Also, in the playback screen, there is no need for the keyboard (which I assume is why the buttons are all on the bottom menu bar) and so could the buttons be placed at the bottom of the screen as buttons rather than items on a menu bar?

A couple of us have had issues with Kaiser ROMs based on the 19209 build causing this same problem (although other ROMs based on the same build are fine). Might be worth trying a WM6.1 ROM if you experience this problem. :)

Awesome program but it has a critical issue on my phone. It crashes the HTC Cube on my Touch Cruise at first and upon a restart attempting to bring up the HTC Cube crashes the touch screen rendering it completely unresponsive. I did a hard reset and reinstalling YouTube player a second time yielded the same results.

I really love your program and would more than happy to provide you with any extra information so that hopefully a fix could be incorporated. Keep in contact! I'm really greatful for your awesome program.

Some more detail:
Installing and running YouTube Player causes the HTC Cube to eventually crash and stop comming up. A soft reset does no good, and after the reset attempting to call up the cube causes the phone to no longer be responsive to any touch screen input (I am assuming the touch.dll driver crashes). Thereafter, after any soft resets the phone takes longer to boot and any attempt to call up the cube will result ina non-responsive touch screen.

I noticed that when you tap the quit button it exits the app and shuts it down, but when i hit my OK button it does the same anyway to make it minimize when OK is hit and close when quit is hit, i would like to leave the program running in some situations. Besides that the app is perfect oh if its a lot of coding dont worry about it.

Nice program. I'm having some problems with the SIP. Previous versions had an icon for the keyboard but now it's kind of random how to get it to open. When I start the program, I get the SIP, but if I minimize it and tap on the text field it doesn't open. If I go to config and back to the text field, I can get the keyboard to show. In latest version, I have a few issues:
* A SIP button would be nice as I sometime have problems accessing the soft keyboard to type in the search field.
* I have no text to the right of the right of the checkboxes in Config.
* Last but definitely not least... playing a clip in 1.0.0.6 casues the app to crash and shut down, so fast that I can't even see the error message code. Worked great in 1.0.0.5.

*EDIT*: Just tried again with 1.0.0.5 and 1.0.0.4 and the same error occurs so it must be a problem with my phone,

This is embarrassing... I figured out why I couldn't play clips anymore... It's actually all in the text above... HINT: If you can't see the text to the right of the checkboxes... DON'T CHECK THEM ALL... sorry for the alert. App still rocks!!

Although I do still have a problem with the checkbox texts not showing, not a biggie though. I have had a another thought I'd like to ask...

Would it be hard to implement a Cop/Paste menu when you tap and hold on the search field. I know it's common in the WM system but I don't know if it'd be hard to implement...
