I haven't seen any update on their website for more than 2 months, and numerous posts in their forum asking the same question were left unanswered.
So I'm wondering... Is this very promising product already dead or are the guys working like dogs to release a killer update that will atomize everything else ?
Appreciate your views on that, or if you have more info...
Thx!

if they expect to seriously contend with the other offerings out there...it needs to be a complete overhaul of what is was before and be waaaaay better than the manilla2d that was put out by our great Devs here.

yeah, youre right. seems like they switched to comic-style *lol*
If it isnt customizable like Manila2D I think hardly any one, except beginners, are going to use it. And, btw, I think theyre going to make it commercial. Or at least a "pro" edition to pay for (of course, "pro" would include custom-styles etc.......)

Totally. I like how Manilla 2d plays nice with the existing windows interface. I always find it problematic whenever a 3rd party gui acts as a program and takes up the entire screen. For example, when you hit the disconnect key when in spb mobile. Something like Manilla 2d or HTC Home just simply works better with minimal headaches because it operates as a today screen plugin.

This is never going to be commercial. They have made it very, very clear, from the start off, that they will never, ever charge for this product.

No, They told later that there will still be a free version but that they'll probably release a Pro, paid version as well in the future.

Go here: http://pointui.com/Home.aspx and click "Download".
Now you see "Pick a version of PointUI" and "Home Free".

i'm going to use it when they release a new Version, maybe in part because Manila 2D is just flipping me off (and all the people who still use HTC Himalaya's).
Some People here obviously think that PointUI is going to rip off Manila 2D huh ?
Looks more like Manila 2D did that with PointUI...

I used to use PointUI and no update for a long time n now Manila2D came out and im in love again, checked the PointUI site again n saw a something new on the home page, checked the forums and other links sadly nothing new to DL. I really like Manilla2D no, but if PointUI comes with something nice i might go back to it, it all depends because the only reason i liked PUI is because it was really fast ( and the only today app that displays TASKS) yet Manilla is fast and its also skinnable so it wins in the current case. I so wish there was a way to display tasks in the home screen though... PointUI can do it, why cant any other today prog...

I guess I used a different version of Pointui then cause it don't look anything like manilla2d.

pointui is for me the "mother of all GUIs", but they have done nothing since months and now they have a massive problem with other GUIs and lost nearly all users, hope they find a way to make a brilliant new version. But i gave up to wait for any update....
and i hope its not a real screenshot, because i can see windows taskbar.

Hopefully pointui remains easy to use and innovative. I really like Manilla2d on my 8525 but its still a resource hog. Any one have any solutions? PM me:)

Any updated version of PointUI had better just rock (and as someone else said, be an almost complete re-write)....there is just too much innovation and competition:
WAD2
Throttlelauch
Manilla2D
Mobile Shell
Today Life
Homescreen ++
Yrgo
UltimateLaunch
And more I am missing I am sure...
All of which are superior to what PointUI "used to be"...
I will be watching, but not all that excited. They departed before...they will likely do so again.

umm yh so much competition, its good actually ;P...
and well abt th all u who can't see taskbar well i do.. it shows taskbar with Start button (th screenshot).. it looks more of a Today Plug-in not a complete GUI like previous version or SPB!!
and yh i've given up on PointUI long time ago.. hope they come up with outstanding one this time, and yh just don't disappear all of a sudden!!

Yes everyone agrees that we dont like to see the start icon.
But i think if its really true that the next generation pointui will have the start icon you can set it back to the old ways in settings. Just like you could with the pointui bar ore the wm bar in the privious versions.
Sorry for my abd english

If my memory doesn't fail me, I believe that PointUI had the option of going either with the PUI taskbar or the regular WM taskbar.
Besides, there is something else that we are forgetting. These guys are working on two other projects (Burgundy and Mulder). Maybe what we are looking at in the screenshot is not Home but rather a plugin for the today screen (could be either of the two separate projects).
Also, I don't think that they stopped. Hell, they are even hiring programmers (see latest post in the Home screen of their site).
In either case, I am truly looking forward to the new releases from these people.

Yup... but I think so far only Manila 2D beats pointUI in terms of performance and usability... I love the new Manila... its like the ultimate thing and its superfast on my Tilt (Kaiser)...PointUI is nt even close to manila... :-/... I doubt PointUI home is gonna be any better than Manila when it comes I have long abandoned PointUI... first for Winterface and now for Manila :) Long Live Manila...

I tried to "crack" the teaser using photoshop to enhance the picture quality, than trace it. So here (http://www.ypeij.nl/klant/pointui-teaser.png) you can see my impression.
Please don't place this directly in the forum, so people can choose to be teased by Pointui or by me ;) .

well it does not look like a background everyone would like to have so my guess is the background is customizable.... which is nice =]

I don't think that you can really compare PointUI with M2D. It would be like comparing apples and oranges. PointUI is a complete shell that fully replaces everything (including menus and certain apps like CommManager, locker, etc). M2D is only a Today plugin (a very functional one for that), but it isn't much more than that (yet)...

I looked at the pointui site and i saw this!
Pointui Home 2 In Development
15-October-2008
No prizes for guessing a new version is in development. Those who donated received an email about our intentions moving forward with Home version 2.0, we'd like to that everyone who kept it to themselves.
While we're behind on our original targets, what have completed so far is fulfilling everything we want for a second version.
We have every intention on keeping everyone informed about what is going on during the development and that starts with one of the most important points raised by our community, a paid version of Home.
There will be two editions of Home 2.0, free and paid. They will differ in the depth of functionality. Home 2.0 Free will in its own right be a Today screen replacement with functionality that other companies charge for. Home 2.0 (as the paid version will be known) will offer a deeper level of the Pointui experience.
Details on what the differences will be in the free and paid editions and when alpha/beta testing commences will be announced in the near future.
This also explaines the start menu icon.

with the developments in throttlelaunch and manilla there is no way these guys can expect to make money with a "paid" version
Kraize
16-10-2008, 06:32 AM
They very well can expect people to pay money for their paid version. You know why? It's not a today screen. Like TouchXperience by Schaps. Like egzthunder1 said. You can't compare apples and oranges.
So No comparing Pointui or TouchXperience to TF3D or M2D. You can comppare pointui to TouchXperience. (Both will be really good). I feel that TouchXperience will be the more customizable, but too many choices. I'll be running the TouchXperience rom as soon as it releases, and I'll probably be switching off between Pointui (if it's any good) and TF3D on my kaiser.
It should be interesting. Pointui free version can be compared with M2D because it is a mentioned today screen plugin. I would also expect the full version to be comparable to TF3D somehow, because the initial homescreen they have, should be devised in some way which surpasses TF3D, M2D, and/or ThrottleLauncher.
I couldn't just live with one though. I often switch off between M2D and TF3D and Pointui and ThrottleLauncher. M2D is mainly because I can't keep TF3d because of the backlight bug, but when it's fixed, M2D is gone. I use ThrottleLauncher mainly because of the functionality and the widgets ;) which are very nice. I use SecondToday so it works nicely.
I sometimes like to turn on Pointui on my kaiser, not often though, but my blackjack (i607) always has PointUI running. I have to agree, for smartphones, it is a good interface. Now if only they had a music player, pictures, people (manilla tabs if you saw what I was saying). They would be in a good position to be getting paid to do that and of course sooner or later you'll begin to see a cracked version of it, it always happens. But I'll be sure to buy PointUI if it's worth it :) In my opinion, Schaps could've charged me for TouchXperience and I would still buy it looking at all it can do.

I'd like to know what the current donations have been funding, and if this new 2.0 is going to take into consideration anything the developer-vacant forum community has been suggesting and contributing.

*lol*, they say We have every intention on keeping everyone informed about what is going on during the development
So what ? I mean, their infos come along every 2 months or so...
Guys, face reality, things are changing quickly, every week there are new versions of already existing apps and new apps as well.
What´s the difficulty with signing up to wordpress.com, blogger.com etc. to start a dev-blog ?!?!? 1-2 posts a week isn´t such a problem I think.
