I just posted an answer to basically the same question in the above forum. You have to read, read, and then when you think you got it read some more. I read the directions and the forums about the ROMs for about 8 months before I hard-SPL'd and flashed my phone.

I'm not trying to be a hard ass but the posts like this and the twenty like it make it even harder to find your answers.

It will come, just have patience and remember.... there is always a chance you will end up with an expensive paperweight.

was it worth flashing the phone as far as that goes? as ive been doing more and more researching it seems to me this phone gets slower and slower...i had that problem with my sidekick and i kind of want to steer clear of that....

It was to some extent, I can use the camera without soft resetting every time.
You'll find that out quickly.

The more you have running the slower it responds, just like your desktop.

You just gotta find what works for you. I got a 4gig microSD (rumor is it will handle an 8gig) I have a lot of music on my phone. I can listen and play a game or check mail or surf at the same time without low memory warnings.
the stock has too much going and it never really closes out.

The custom ROMs usually have reg. tweaks to improve performance and make it all just run so much smoother.

another new Wing user here
Do I have to Hard SPL the wing before flashing different ROM?

I checked SPL in bootloader, and it's above 4.0

From what I read, it doesn't seem like hard SPL is required. The uspl process should work just as well

I also wonder if I should unlock my SIM first before flashing, or it doesn't matter

Hard SPL will give you more options. Most ROMs require hard SPL.
The USPL is only used at the cooks discretion. There are only a few that make ROMs with that option.

For the ones that do, you end up with the same thing using either method.

SIM doesn't really matter.

Follow this thread to Hard SPL your phone. A wiser man than I wrote this.

yo i had my wing for about a week, i went straight flash to open touch 4 within 5 minutes of owning it... i didnt do the hardspl.. so you dont need it..

I think for a newb, your gonna have a lot of questions and be confused about the roms.. I know i still have that doubt in my head "what if i try that one, or this one, which one is the best? wow that looks dope should i do it?" Im still playing with the phone, realizing alot of stuff on it i probably wont use..

but im curious if id benefit besides unlocking the phone.. Its kinda cool to have that title that your phone is unlocked.. but i just signed a 2 year contract so i doubt id be pulling the sim out unless im in one of those rare times when a friends phone dies and he wants to use mine lol

I agree with pseudoproto; try not to post if it is not constructive or a serious problem, which you did not manage to solve after extensive searching and reading. This is nothing personal, but just to prevent the forums from clogging up or (eventually) moderators killing your post.

There are about a dozen ROM's which have been released the past two weeks and tons of ROM's in the previous weeks. You may ask if flashing your device with a cooked ROM is the best thing to do, but this entirely depends on your personal flavour.

I suggest you wait till you have received your Wing. Try using it on it's stock ROM for a week en then decide it you would like to have the risk ending up with a expensive paperweight.

When you decide to use a cooked ROM make a selection of the ROM's which seem to be interesting. One of the most experienced cooks in this forum is ITje.
Make sure you have read all the forum posts about the selected ROM and its predecessors.

As a Touch-It adept I know for certain you will need to Hard-SPL your device before you flash the Touch-IT versions 6 and 7. Because these two ROM's are based on the P4350 edition you might have some small conversion problems.....but again read all the posts and you will know for sure.

I recommend using the Touch-IT V7.1 Public Beta, although it needs some more fine-tuning which is already in progress; this because of the extensive knowledge base in the posts and its predecessors.

Each problem you will find has been found before, each bump you wil hit has been hit before so you will not be forced to reinvent the wheel all over again. Search and read and about 99.9% of your problems will besolved.

Good luck!

how do I know if a cooked ROM require Hard SPL?
I have to admit, I only looked at Open Touch 3 and 4 thread, so I assume all cooked ROM can do either uspl or hard SPL
Guess I just learn something new :)

hypertek:
Thanks for the feedback. I guess it makes me feel a bit better now knowing what you did.
One reason I look at Open Touch is that it seems to be the most "compatible" with Wing
Once I learn more about cook ROM/etc, I might try others

While TMobile stock is "good enough", there's a few thing that I see "missing"
- No Profile (think HTC home has basic profiling option)
- No "easy" way to get to comm manager without using stylus (ie easily turn on/off wifi/BT)
- memory hog, both storage and program. Think any cook ROM will fix this

Of course, there's the "fun" factor tweaking your new gadget :D

Think I will head over to Open Touch Discussion thread and start asking questions

To be perfectly honest I tried the Open Touch first because I didn't have to Hard-SPL. I read through the thread before just to get the answers your looking for now. The reason I decided to Hard-SPL is the options...Most ROM threads will tell you within the first three posts if they need Hard-SPL or not.

Some seem to flash a little differently anyway, For instance, The Open Touch 4.1 micro flashes off the microSD card but the other flavors flash with AS4.5 and you can do it with Hard-SPL or USPL. Other ROMs are ONLY Hard-SPL.

ITje, Aserg, ivanmmj, and TTran all make very nice ROMS and all have their merits. jappo01 likes Touch-it (nice ROM) but I went back to Open Touch. I bet we could argue ROMs all night.

If you do go to the Open Touch discussion READ, so many questions have already been asked most of yours might be already answered.

Of course, there's the "fun" factor tweaking your new gadget :D You just summed up why XDA even exists!

You are looking at another Open Touch 3.0 biggy user here:D

It is really simple (at least for Open Touch 3.0 biggy) to flash
- get the flasher
- get the rom rar file
- unrar the rom file into the right place
- launch flasher
- press some buttons when asked to do so
- done

Only used it for less than 10 hrs, but it seems like this drain battery more than stock TMo ROM

Opera 4 mini on stock TMo ROM is decent
Opera 4 mini on Open Touch is fast!

I also get one thing I missed: hard button for vibrate! It comes in handy when i need to silent my phone during meeting

Time for Open Touch 3.0 reading

Read the forums. Search the forums. Then read some more.
Read like you're back in school. I've had my wing for 6 months and I haven't flashed or even considered a hard spl. I have 24mb of program ram on the stock rom. I did it by reading, trying, and doing a few hard resets... I'll probably cook my own rom before I flash. There's a ton of information out there, and it's WAY too much to keep typing over and over again. That's why God created Google! Besides, it's much more fun if you customize your phone my yourself.
