if you have 4 bars in 2G mode, then nothing is wrong with your reception level. 3G mode is completely different from 2G mode all together. having 2-3 bars in 3G mode is perfectly normal. 3G coverage is week in general. You have nothing to be concerned about really.
In my situation I was having 1-2 bars in 2G mode and 1-2 bars in 3G mode. (Polaris). Also, in 3G mode signal frequently was degrated to the level where radio would automatically fallback to 2G mode and stay there. We have practicaly entire HTC range at our disposal. Every single HTC phone that has been manufactured Himalaya inclusive. As soon as I have noticed week GSM signal on Polaris, I have checked few others for the same issue, namely:
Kaiser, Wings, Niki, Excalibur, Cavalier, Himalaya, Pharos, Hermes, Trinity, VOX, Herald and few others.
Also, please note: Kaiser, Wings, Niki and Polaris were running indentical radio: stock standard 1.58.21.23. we keep our handsets consistent accross the board as much as we can.
Kaiser, Niki and Wings produced excellent reception quality results with full 3-4 bars in 2G and 3+ bars in 3G mode.(UMTS 2100 and HSDPA).
I have tested on 3 GSM networks in total.
At the same time, Polaris demonstrated very concerning results in both 2G and 3G mode. (see above).
That is why I have decided to further investigate this issue.
After flashing Murata PPAS radio, Polaris receives 3-4 bars in GSM mode indoors, full 4 bars outdoors, 3 bars indoors and 3-4 bars outdoors. This is perfectly in line with other phones based on the same hardware platform: Kaiser, Niki and Wings.
I hope it helps.
P.S. At this stage I come to conclusion that there are Polaris handsets that have issue and others that have not. No matter what radio they being flashed to. This is perfectly possible if manufacturer replaced some electronic chip in newer batches of phones. This is common practice for mass production. Therefore we have conflicting reports in both polls.
bottom line is: if your Polaris has no issues with GSM reception after non-Murta radio upgrade, then it will likely to keep good reception level with any radio.
Murata radio seems to address the issue with support for specific chip only in handset and will not improve reception level for every single Polaris out there.
Please accept my appologies for such a long winded post. :)
Hi guys,
I stumbled across this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=388823)... and it seems that there are already a few people who tried to flash the Russian ROM and after that flushing a WWE ROM without radio and they reported that their Polaris was working again after that...
I am currently a little too anxious to try out myself with my Orbit 2 but I thought it would be an idea to point this possible solution in a separate thread and for those who have tried it, please vote so we have a better overview if this is a fix or not...
[edit]
I tried the Radio-only first (after I did the HardSPL flash) but I still get only 2 bars 3G signal strength. Only outdoors it's 4 bars and when walking it's changing between 3 and 4 bars. 2G (GSM) is always at 4 bars inside and outside.
After that I flashed the complete Russian ROM but everything stays the same. Also after hardresetting the device. Even after flashing it again and again :|
Now I think I tried every option which I found on this xda forums several times... maybe any1 has another idea?

No need for apologies :) well it gives me a better feeling that my Orbit2 is not really that bad, though I remember I had better reception in original state. Currently I'm trying to figure out why TomTom does not get any satellites. I have updated latest data with QuickGPS and chose Built-In GPS...
[edit]
took about half an hour to get the initial first gps fix... but from then on, it gets the first fix within 3-5 seconds... nice

Works greaaat ! Thank you so much guys!!
Ok here is my story... I bought a Cruise but the first thing I did was to unlock it (without testing it before!). So when I tried it I thought "what this piece of shit... the reception is so bad!!" but thought it was normal so I was already thinking about selling it on eBay :D Then I found this forum....
I've just flashed it with Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23 and it works like a charm now, so thank you very much!
ps: before finding this post I tried each rom radio I found! thx again!

I'm an US expat working in China. The entire import industry for the Polaris shutdown these few weeks because of this problem. There will be many happy Chinese HTC dealers tomorrow. Wooohooo!

Yeah I extensively tested my Orbit 2 this weekend. I think I have no more problems now with it. So my vote to my own poll is actually wrong now... should be "... my 3G reception is back to normal and at full strength"

At home with original rom I had 2 bars, after to Raramomo SFR and 1.64.08.21
still 2/1 bars in 3G, I have tested Murata and always 2/1 bars, so I have decided to keep 1.64.02.21 because I known its battery's drain and I known nothing about Murata.
Thanks a lot for you works

Just to clarify on this issue with low reception for some Polaris handsets:
Manufacturer has replaced some micro electronic components in some batches of Polaris.
Stock standard radio 1.58.21.23 and others has no support for those new components and therefore new handsets suffer low reception level issue.
1.58.21.23 radio Murata has support for new components included and maintains backward compatibility to earlier shipped handsets.
this radio will not affect ( improve or otherwise) reception quality for phones in older batches.
P.S. Radio is genuine.

Stock standard radio 1.58.21.23 and others has no support for those new components and therefore new handsets suffer low reception level issue.
My question is, why my (I got it early, I guess I have an old model) Polaris came shipped with 1.58.23.21 where the Murata Radio reads version number 1.58.21.23 which is lower and thus I assume older?

Thank you for the great discovery. This Murata thing is working! I wanted to go with this device to the warranty, but i said to give this a shot, because my TC had the same simptoms discribed (only that i tested in GSM, i use 3g only for net).
Where i had signal between 70-80% (2-3 lines) now i have 100% (i use this percentage because i have batterystatus program (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=270751) that tells me in percentage). Where one hour ago my TC didn't discover any signal now it has 70% (2-3 lines).
I tested with dslreports.com/mspeed before and after:
GSM/GPRS: 29kbits before - 40kbits after
3g: 141kbits before - 200kbits after
My device information:
ROM VERSION: 1.25.405.1 WWE
ROM dare: 12/11/07
Radio Version: 1.58.21.23 (it writes the SAME version i had before, no murata no nothing)
Protocol version: 25.65.30.04W
I have to mention one thing: on my box (the box with the htc touch cruise in it), where it has the bar code, it writes Rev. A (from Revision A). I think maybe all devices with revision A will benefit from this radio and other revision not... please specify what it writes on your package.
Thanks again! Now I can say I am sattisfied with my investment (If you look in my posts I baught a s-h htc tytn I with battery drain problems... now is for sale for just 180 Euro in Romania... i can ship it if someone wants it)

And my touch cruise detect a 3g area (no before this radio rom).
I try in my office this morning (no signal with the original rom).
I'am enjoy and this Rom resolve my problem.

did you buy "second-hand" so it might have been already used with a rom and been restored to "original" state before sold to you?
you can overwrite the rom even if it has the same version number.

Hello, no i bought the device brand new.
There is some way to back up current radio rom i have if i wanna roll back ?
To flash this radio rom will work in original pda rom 1.25.410.1 PTG ?
To do this operation do i need to run HardSPL or that is only intended for flashing PDA ROM ?

yrsmart,
The murata radio looks the same in device information! It is a modified version (by an official company) of the 1.58.21.23 Radio! After you flash the murata radio in the device information you will see the same radio!
You can use customRUU (search and download from this site and put it in the folder where you extracted the murata radio and double click the customruu exe, not the one that came with the murata radio archive) so that you don't have to erase your current rom (only the radio rom will be rewritten), but backup all your data first and don't forget to hard-SPL first!!
later edit (after i saw your reply):
You don't need to change your OS ROM! You will change only the radio ROM using customRUU!
You need to hard-spl your device! If you think you will loose your warranty you can always go back to the original SPL (look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1962153&postcount=79 ), but look for your original OS ROM and original SPL first, so that you know you have it and keep it in your hard drive!
What device do you have htc touch cruise /xda?

Hi shumilica, i've found Hard-SPL-V2 , is with this that ill start ? This hard-sql will hard-reset my device ? What are the disavantages of using Hard-SPL ?
Thanks and regards.
[Edit]
I alredy downloaded Original SPL, do i need also my original rom ? Wasn't this only flash radio rom ?
I have a Cruise.

I suggest you to read carrefully the sticky topics around polaris area.
Make sure you read this topic too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=381600
Hard-spl will not hard-reset your device, but please be patience, take 1-2 days to document and feel safe of what you are doing.
There is no disadvantage in using hard-spl (the only one was that you could't go back to the original spl for warranty purposes, but it is resolved now, check my post above). It is NECESSARY to hard-spl BEFORE any ROM flash (radio, os)!
Check here to see if there is your rom and download it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=373233

I alredy read the FAQ you said, but i can't find my current rom, but as only radio rom will be flashed there should't be a problem isnt it ?

Alredy updated raio rom to murata, flash was sucessfull, but i cant see if has really got murata raio rom because version showned is the same... Also i didnt get reception improvments... :(

22nd May 2008, 04:11 PM
You didn't document enough and you put the ROM for OS !!!AND!!! the rom for RADIO from the murata rom. You had to use CustomRUU to flash only the radio ROM. I explained some post ago in this thread how to do it.
You have to flash now a OS ROM (without the radio os). It is a topic in this sub-forum with ALL OS ROM available. take one from there and put it in your tc

Brand new HTC Touch Cruise (Polish language version)
Problem - very poor GSM/UMTS reception... in buildings one bar or nothing, outdoor 2-3 bars.
1. Hard-SPL-V2
2. Updated with Murata Radio ROM (Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23) using Polaris_CustomRUU_v1.2
Now - FULL SIGNAL STRENGTH!

So after only owning my Polaris (o2 UK Orbit 2) for 4 hours I decided to upgrade my rom to Bepe's 0.67 Opera and also update my radio to 1.64.08.21 as this is what I was using on my Kaiser and it was excellent with T-Mobile UK. As so many others the radio dropped all signal, and I was unable to use any sim with my phone.
Searching around, I found the Murata Radio which "appeared" to fix all of my problems in terms of reception, but I kept dropping calls, kept losing connection as soon as I called someone, and it got rather annoying...
I then stumbled across the Official o2 German update here: http://www.o2online.de/nw/support/downloads/software/xda/xdaorbit2/index.html
in which I noticed the Radio had been upgraded from the old German rom. Having flashed it to my Orbit 2, and then flashing Bepe 0.67 to my unit I have found the phone to behaving perfectly as it was before I started messing with it in the first place.
I would suggest anyone having issues with the Murata radio to try this although please be warned, it will return your device to a "Hard Reset" state, meaning make sure you have a backup of everything first...

I noticed something strange with internet connection (on all radios include murata).
Browsing internet is impossible without permanent pinging any host - all the time bands are still changing between H, 3G, E and GPRS.
- With permanent 'ping' all is OK and all the time I have HSDPA over 2000kbps.
- Without ping using internet is impossible :(
Anybody has noticed the same? Any solution?

Tested both 1.58.21.23 and 1.58.25.14; but i find 21.23 more stable.
With 21.23, i get 2 bar for 3G. 25.14 also the same but it drops to 1 bar frequently.
Testing for both Radio ROM done at 1 spot which is on my computer table :)

Suddenly it had happened; NO 3G nor GPRS data transmission. I can see the 3G sign , but when I make calls the phone disconnects; when somebody call me, he received a message that my phone is off line. Only when 3G signal is on. But when normal GSM is on, everything will be OK. My phone can not get data from the internet, even though it shows that is is connected. I tried all of the above solutions to fix this problem but no help. I tried to hard reset and try it before installing any software, no help. I tried mostly all available ROMs and Radio ROMs; even the original, but not fixed. I do not what to do. Now, I am using the phone with GSM only, NO 3G. Please help!!!

I have tried use the KaiserCustomRUU with the Murata radio rom to update the rom for my kaiser. The CustomRUU complained about invalid Model ID and the phone rebooted itself when the progress bar hit 5%. Can this rom be running on Kaiser?
I have the latest HardSPL (I believe it's 3.29)
Thanks :)

Works like a charm in my Touch Cruiser too. I flashed radio ROM from 1.64.08.21 to Murata 1.58.21.23 with Polaris_CustomRUU.exe (no need to hard reset). Now I have 3G and HSDPA working again, and internet connection is noticeable faster!

Yes U should use the polaris customRUU so it doesn't hard reset your device.
Just put the RUU_signed.nbh from the Murata radio folder to the CustomRUU folder.
Put your device in bootloader mode and run the Polaris customRUU.
The process does slow down at 99% , it's normal just keep waiting patiently until it gets to 100%
And you're done.

Flashing a new radio, doesnt affect the bluetooth at all right? I'm asking because, i'm having bluetooth problems...choppy....and i just want to find a fix for it.
EDIT: Well I flashed this radio and as far as signal...i didnt need much improvement in that. But, this bluetooth!!!!! I really hope that maybe its the headset. The problem is that I just switch from the x7501 Advantage...and the headset worked fine on that. No static, choppy, or nothing.
Can i install the HTC bluetooth fix on top of this radio?

I am having a heck of a time trying to get 3G to work. I have tried both murata radio roms. It does give me good signal strength. That is not the problem. When I try to make a voice call or use data, it disconnects. The only way to use voice call and data is to actually disable 3G. Then everything works although its only through edge and GPRS. I've tried the original radio rom, some of the kaiser ported radio rom but they all give me the same problem. Interestingly, this all started about 2 weeks ago. Prior to that, 3G was working well in any cooked roms/radio rom combination. The only thing that changed was that I am now using a new SIM provided by my cell phone provider that came with my new 3G iphone. When I put this sim in the 3G iphone, I get 3G no problem. Could this be network related? I've tried the older sim card on my touch cruise and it gives the same problem. My touch cruise is revision A firmware as noted from the box. Do I need to send my touch cruise for repair?

To all who are having problems with 3G even after trying the Murata radio ROM, I have a few questions. When did the 3G started giving problems? What radio ROM/Cooked ROM were you using at the time it started giving problems? I am trying to narrow down the cause of 3G problems. It definitely is not due to a physical abuse. So it has to be a combination of software(ROM) and network problem. Please post your results. Thanks.

This patch started a new life for my HTC. I really like all HTC Cruise features but hated the phone when trying to use it as it should work best: as a simple phone.
Now, it's working fine. Thank you!

Hey all,
I have flashed my polaris with the official german rom from the HTC page (with Windows 6.1). Now I don't have any reception at all :( WTF? Can I use this radio rom for my HTC? (It is not an O2 rom like in the previous post, it is a official rom!)
Thanks for the very good work!

I couldn't wait for an answer and did it with this instructions: http://narawen.wordpress.com/2008/05/25/how-to-fix-poor-gsm-signal-reception-on-htc-touch-cruise-polaris/
Everything went well and *bam* 3 bars! Thanks very much!

Ok, still very bad reception :( No reception in car at all. At home at most one bar. So all in all unacceptable :(

just bought used orbit2, sig quality was very poor--not more than 2 bars anywhere (no 3g in pakistan) or no sig at times or sig drops while talking. Murata radio saved me from returning back of phone; later on i performed hard SPL and flashed with original 6.1 ROM from xda---everything is fine now. There might be problems with higher versions of radios, original orbit2 radio is 1.59.42.15. This should work if you have reception problem
