Weather for CHome... Take 2!

Alright. Completely redesigned from the ground up... CHome Weather 2 !

This will install two shortcuts in your Start Menu. A "Weather Update" shortcut, which you can use to update manually, as well as "Weather Options" shortcut.

Steps to take to make this work:

1) Install one of the cabs below. Pick the "Slim" version if you want thinner panels, like in the screenshots.

2) It should ask to reboot ! (turn phone off and on.. etc). If it doesn't... reboot manually!

3) Go to your Start Menu and find "Weather Options". Set your Zip / Location Code to your zip code if you're in the US or a "location code" if you're anywhere else. More info on finding your specific code is here http://developer.yahoo.com/weather/#req . Set the "Fahrenheit / Celsius" option to either "F" or "C" (without the quotes!). Specify how often you would like to autoupdate the weather information in minutes in option 3. Specify whether you would like the application to attempt to connect your default GPRS connection first, before updating. Finally you can turnoff the autoupdate feature with the last option (7).

4) Now it might be a good idea to go to Start and find "Update Weather" and run it.

5) The cab should set your homescreen to "Sliding Panel Top Bar + Weather!" automatically. If it doesn't, you need to do it manually to see the weather plugin. If you top icons disappear then you might have to use the regular "Sliding Panel + Weather!" theme.

Please let me know what bugs you find.

The first couple of thumbnails show the "Collapsed" state of the plugin, where it shows only the city and the current temp.

If you want your system font to look like the one in the thumbnails (calibri), download the .cab attached, install and reboot.

Added illi's potrait orientation .cpr file to the regular testui version cab. Added AutoUpdate on/off in the options panel (scroll down to see it). Reboot after changing that option. More bugfixes...

- Ver 1.5. Last update reflects time on Yahoo's servers in both layouts. More options added to options panel.
- Ver 1.04 A few updates. More options. Switch between two layouts. Bug fixes... etc
- Ver 1.03 Celsius bug squashed. Now the country code shows up after the city name for people outside the US.
- Ver 1.02 New logic in update script. Update percentage counter added. Forecast for tomorrow in the bottom line with hi and low values and hi and low values for the current day at the top, after the city name. Yahoo icon pack added, in case you prefer those.
- Ver 1.01. Added last update time as a second line under the current temp. Added dropshadow icons created by KWOODALL! Thanks for the beautiful icons! 5/11 10:52AM

As a side note, the second line display is dependant on the font used on the device, so it might not align properly on some device. Let me know when it doesn't and I'll update the script to work on your device. Or better yet, just download the Calibri font mod cab below and be happy. Thank you.

edit. i think i figured out the problem. Mis named two files, he got them flip-flopped. Go to program files/nrg/chomeweather and locate the weather.mscr file. It needs to be renamed SlidingPanelMediatopbar.home.xml and placed in the application data/home folder.//// but b-4 doing that you need to find the SlidingPanelMediatopbar.home.xml already in the application data/home folder and put it somewhere so it doesnt get overwritten. Then after youve moved the first file,relocate the SlidingPanelMediatopbar.home.xml file you relocated and rename it Weather.mscr and place it in program files/nrg/chomeweather . then try the update

update: the vibrate thing when you update the weather is kinda funky. you can take it out of the weather.mscr if you dont like it. Just do your edit via notepad on your pc and replace it into its original directory on your phone that it came from.... also dont forget to soft reset your phone after installing this .cab

Here. If my steps are too confusing, I've repackaged the .cab. One with and the other without the auto-updater
the second one is the one without the auto-updater.

I installed your cab and rebooted and worked even remembering my city and celsius but when I tried to open start menu would stay on chome. I rebooted again (remember its Windoze) and working well. thanks for all of your hard work OrganicM and you too pudgedaddy

It's odd that *I* would that intentionally isn't it ? LOL Well I didn't, I guess my cab packaging software went haywire. I reuploaded the cab in the first post.

The only bug i see is that it will not initialize a data connection to update the weather info. I already have to have a data connection started b-4 it will update. So i have to open a program like PIE or Opera, get the data connection started, end that application then do the update. kinda of a pain in the butt, but hey my weather slide hasnt gone away yet, so i guees that's good

Same here with the Data Connection, but as soon as I initialized my data connection and went to UPDATE WEATHER, it refreshed my home screen, put it back to the default "Green" color and the Weather panel was gone....? What gives with that?

I've noticed that also. I'll try to make them look better. They arent exactly squared originally, which is why when we try to fit them in the small, square, 44x44 pixel space on the panel, they get distorted a little bit. I'll work on that....

editing names in photodialer requires some fancy footwork. oldSAP's application works oj but doesnt edit the registry in both places it needs to ( at least it didnt for me) so i had to manually add the names in the hklm-->software-->microsoft-->chome-->CphotoDialer then page (1-12) and go to the sk2text, text1 and text 2 sections of all of those page folders and edit them one -by-one. then i had to edit all of the .lnk files with total commander to make sure it dialed the right phone number

yes, that's how you do it - instead of doing that in the registry let me help you out here.

- First Install OldSapFavourites, more like just copy it to your phone
- Second, Install these registry edits
-Thirs, Open OldSap Favourites and Choose CMyApps or CPhotoDialer and Edit it accordingly

Example: Title Text - My Faves (for every contact so it seems like its My Faves, not Photo Dialer)

Then where it says Call ( I left that) and then where it says Call XXXX (I just took everything off and just put the required name so it looks like -

Call (bigger font)
Abc (smaller font) - that looks pretty clean.

EDIT: now just do that for every contact, I'll upload a screen shot in an hour, I have to go attend a conference call, when i'm back - i'll upload a screen shot

actually,,, all im doing to cropping off the edges on the sides. adding a little more dead space on the top and bottom then scaling them to 44x44 to conserve file size. (but you''ll still see the full image, just not all stretchy looking)

Cannot get this to work for the life of me. Whether it's telling me I don't have an Internet Connection (which I do) or when I hit update weather and it refreshes the screen and the weather panel is gone. hmm i just noticed something. if you have the battery meter installed it gets closed after a update. im guessing this is caused by the reloading of the screen?

Another thing my phone start having freeze ups, so I uninstall the weather app and again Start and All Program are back to working normal and the freeze ups have gone. I got the same problem with the start menu. I lose visual on the screen for start menu but it is still running and I can still open programs. I just can"t see what I'm picking. After a reset, start menu works correctly again until next update. I'm on a blackjack with Da_G 6.1 beta 2. I decided to remove start menu links for weather and now after update start menu comes up but doesn't start with most recent programs, it starts on page where I last launched a program.

This cab file does not modify your .cpr files and doesn't need special permissions to install, unlike the old ones.

It will install two shortcuts in your Start Menu. An "Update Weather" shortcut as well as "Chome Weather Options" shortcut.

Steps to take to make this work:

1) Install cab. (doh!)

2) Reboot ! (turn phone off and on.. etc)

3) Go to your Start Menu and find CHome Weather Options. Set your Zip / Location Code to your zip code if you're in the US or a "location code" if you're anywhere else. More info on finding your specific code is here http://developer.yahoo.com/weather/#codes . Restart the app and set the second option to either "F" or "C" (without the quotes!). Make sure it says "Options saved. Exiting..." after each operation.

4) Now it might be a good idea to go to Start and find "Update Weather" and run it.

5) Check your homescreen. See if a "Weather" panel shows up now. It should have current info in it. Push the center select button to update manually, at any time. In a few seconds your screen will automatically refresh.


IF you don't see a weather panel, go to your Start/Settings/Home Screen settings and use the "Sliding Panel Media Top Bar + Weather!" homescreen.

If you don't want your weather being updated automatically every 20 minutes, just download the "NO AU" .cab :)

Please let me know what, if any, bugs you find.

Yes... I will add more pages to the panel later, with 3 or 5 day forecast information. Right now, I want to iron out the kinks :)

p.s. I will also release a version that uses the CTestUIPlugin, which will update the screen in real time. I will personally use this version, since it seems more reliable updating the welcome center style plugin.

I'm thinking all the problems with the start menu are because of the exe I'm using to refresh the screen automatically. I attached a cab version in this post that doesn't use that. Please download and test. If all your problems go away, then we have our culprint and I'll have to look into another way to reload the homescreen.... or... start using the CTestUIPLugin again, so we dont have to. umm...ok i dont know what's going on :|

seems very promising - i instaled the Chome Weather Panel 2

folowed everything, got my city's code, input it as well as selected Celsius then when i connected to the internet, updated the weather - the weather panel disappeard so i selected the Sliding Media Top Bar + Weather and i don't see the Weather Panel anymore.

oh and also, it added another panel with "My Programs" which wasn't there before in Sliding Media NRG with Red X's and i don't need it right now because I'm already using your other My apps program.

Any suggestions Organic? I'm going to go reboot my phone to see if it will work.

Oh on the other hand, Amazing Amazing Work - I'm very happy to know we have people like you that help this forum be a much better place to be :D


P.S: I'm running Kavana's ROM, would that have to do with anything? cause so far, everythings perfect :S

Do you have Weather in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\CHome\Plugins? I had to add it here for it to show up for me.

i'm on my opera mini right now so icant really look into things. let me get home and look at the cabs once over, maybe i missed something. as far as the internet goes, the script checks for internet connectivity by trying to load www.google.com. can u load that page in PIE on your phone ?

It's just Weather, no C. Also, for my start menu problem I ended up installing SmartToolKit rc08 to replace it and it works perfect, no problems.

Yes, I do have the testuiplugin still in there and I'm using the au version(although I moved the au out of windows/startup because it kicks you out of whatever you're doing when it updates). I had the his first version yesterday working and updating, then woke this morning and it was gone and I couldn't get it to come back. I'm hoping this one sticks.

I installed it on my htc s621 and it works like a charm....the only thing is that when it updates it opens a bunch of apps then it finally goes back to the homescreen like its freaking out or something...but other than that it works....great job organic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i've noticed that too, sometimes... Whenever you add a custom page to registry under CHome, sometimes it decides to take it out of the plugin order. I think I will try working with the CWelcomeCenter page, since it's already there, and it's ALWAYS there. Maybe that will keep it from dissapearing for some people. The only negative thing about that would be that you would have no welcome center anymore... but... .who cares about that anyway, right ? :D

just uninstalled the older one, rebooted, installed this and just rebooted. will let you know in 5 mins, REALLY HOPE THIS WORKS otherwise im gonna be sad lol cause i tried so many times today. :S

Yeah, I don't really like how it freaks out either. I wish I could be of help but hmm, i don't know much about this but if i do come across anything, I'll let you know. Could you tell me what exactly are you using to do all this? What language or program?

Hey Organic,

You mind making a no auto update version (with the welcome center plugin) because it auto updates itself and freaks out every 20 minutes and if there's no internet connection (as I don't have a data plan) - it kinda gets annoying. Also, i get this error if there's no Internet i'm guessing for it to auto-update.

Off Topic - I just installed Opera Mini 4.1 and man, it's AMAZING ! IE is nothing infront of it. I haven't used opera in over 4-6 months and wow, this is just refreshing, makes me want to surf the internet with my phone now, i got into all the sites. I seriously doubt my cab would have erased your icons. As far as I know... the windowslive panel doesnt even work properly. But anyway, use another theme for your home screen, or simply uninstall my cab. That should do the trick :)

The "Connect to the internet" option means it will forcibly try to connect. If you set it to N (no), it will try and fail. If you set it to Y (yes) it will first make an attempt to connect your default GPRS/wifi connection, before updating.

Awwww Damn! Now i cant get the weather slider to come up again. did the uninstall and re-install and still no dice. ahhhh! and yes i soft -rebooted my phone

ok i think i figured out my problem. i have no earthly idea how this happened ( others having this issue might also check this)
but in page1 and page2 (with outerdepths add-on) the actionurl,pictures, and sk2url were all wrong. non of them had any "\" in them
so in other words it looked like this: " program filesNRGChomeWeatherWeather.exe " instead of \program files\NRG\ChomeWeather\Weather.exe
i did all the changes and rebooted my phone and now the weather app is back on my sliding panels

No,


You have to extract the contents of the zip to your phone. That means got to the Program Files\NRG\CHomeWeather folder and place the mscr file in there. Next you update your registry. Just extract the reg keys to your phone and click on them. That should do it.

If after you reboot your phone, it doesn't show the 2nd page, it probably means the reg keys did not update. I have run into this problem a couple of times myself. My phone even said registry updated successfully, but after a reboot my registry was not updated successfully. So, I had to manually enter the 2nd page for my registry.

Try it and let me know what's going on.

No Problem,

Go into your registry and where the CHome entries are, just remove Page7,Page8, page.... When I say CHome, I don't mean remove the keys, I mean where it says Pages under the CHome Key, edit the line that says Pages. Just double click that and delete those pages for contacts you don't want or need. To add a page, you just copy one of the other pages exactly and enter all of the values it has. Reboot and your good to go.

You have already updated your registry? That's quick. Make sure that it shows those pages in your registry or it will not show in the panel. Anyway, all I have given you is reg entries and an mscr. Neither one of these changes (even if they were wrong) would kill that panel from displaying unless your registry is not showing correctly. I am using the most recent OrganicM cab as well (I just wanted to clerify that.)

Dude, the time zone should match the location you put in and it gets downloaded directly from Yahoo's servers. You can't change it (as of now anyway). Does it now show up correctly for you, or what ?

Yeah, the TestUI version works a lot better.... The only flaw in it, is it the homescreen won't reload once you try to change a background or color scheme... As you disable the testui plugin it's fine, so I'm sure there's some bug in it that keeps it from reloading properly :( But if you're not the type to switch themes too often, you should be fine. Besides, if you do switch to another theme, you can just reboot the phone and the new theme will come on :)

This is gettin' better and better! Just one thing to remind everyone is if you go in and even look at a setting in Weather Options you MUST enter a value. If you go in just to look at it (and arn't paying attention and click "YES") then you are entering nothing and the value goes from whatever was in there to nothing.

On a side note: you mention that the update time is 45min, can this be brought down to 30 or 15? Or is this not recomended? Thanks for all your hard work... now I don't need to change homescreens- I'm a weather freak!:D

First thanks to OrganicM for putting this thing together.
I've got a bug to report: I'm using this on my BlackJack1 with WM6.1 B2 from Da_G. After the weather panel updates on my Homescreen, whenever I go to my Start Menu my Programs List is not visible. I can see the top and bottom menu bars but nothing in between. This is the same for Recent Programs and All Programs. My work around has been to use SmartToolkit, so it's no biggie if it's something that can't be fixed.

Mickey, I wish I could tell you where the problem is, but I cannot. Again, I tried the latest new weather App and it was the perfect storm on my mobile device. I lost complete slides, no functionality with Start, All Programs, enough was enough, I had to reinstall everything. I have now officially gone back to MSNDirect weather, I have it in one of my 27 slides and I don't have to worry about it disappearing causing any problems, plus I don't have to wait one hour for a weather update, the weather update is instant at all times.:)

Arg, i knew it would happen. I had a version running perfectly, it was one of the ones from around page 9 or so and it updated and ran perfectly. Then i went to upgrade to the new testui version and now it wont update at all. :|

New version of the TestUI version uploaded in first post. The options panels is totally redone, and all the bugs worked out. It really works a lot better. The main weather script has been updated as well. It will give off two very short vibrations when it updates the weather (so you know it's working!!). If that's annoying to some of you, I will provide a version without it. Still working on a forecast version, I just wanted to perfect this first. Might be moving to a .net app from mortcript. Try it and let me know how it works! :)

Because when it updates the weather, it needs to update your homescreen, so it goes white for a couple of seconds, then it gets updated.

Okay guys, I see the problem. I didnt include my modified CPR file to arrange the layout of the CTestUIPlugin. So right now, it's using the default microsoft layout which is obviously all messed up. Will work on that now and reupload the CPR file.

Definitely something wrong with the cpr file. I looked at it, and at 1st glance doesn't appear to be anything wrong, but once you start playing around with positions it becomes all to easy to see that the it IS the layout of the testui panel in the cpr.

I will try to fix this, but I'm sure OrganicM is on top of it all ready due to his previous post. Hope you fix this bud. It is frickin sweet so far. And hope to see that forecast and map, etc link in this panel too. Keep up the good work!:D

Organic...based on the screen capture, this thing is looking awesome. I have the Kavana 6.1...so hopefully it'll work just as well on mine!

Check this in my pic you can see that the icon for the TestUI panel is not your weather icon. I went into the registry and fixed both places. I inserted your weather icon for the iconpath, but when I reboot, all that has changed is the active panel icon, no matter what I do, I cannot get it to change the inactive icon.

By the way the icon that it selects in place of yours/mine is the message center icon for inactive. I'll post a screenshot if necessary. Also, it did this on your previous releases that used the TestUI panel, but it did not do this when you had the Weather Panel.

I wouldn't install that cab if I were you. It will replace the cpr that OrganicM is using. Instead I would look in the LCD zip on this forum and in it contains the cpr. Take that cpr file and open it in notepad. It will say a different font for the time part in the clock panel layout. Substitute that font for the one in Organic's font plus install the font that comes in the LCD zip.

That should get it going correctly. Oh yeah, you might have to uninstall/reinstall this weather panel cab.

It seems like a lot of work for a little payoff, but I already tried it and it didn't seem to take too long, so no worries, mate.:)

lol Organic is a wonderful guy and i do think he's too nice sometimes but i have to admit - your a wonderful member on this forum especially for what you've contributed to the forums. i told this guy that my weather panel wouldn't show up on my screen. he got right to it and he got me a version that works on my phone and guess what - I LOVE IT ! I'm sticking with it until you come with your final version. The only thing I don't like is how it freaks out when I update it, otherwise it's BEAUTIFUL ! Great work Organic - You DA MAN :D !!!!

haha joker - i know what you mean, vista i guess is only cool to look at but in terms of application and ease of use, xp is much easier - after i upgraded to 6.1, i had a very hard time syncing my phone until today whereas with xp, bam ! wouldn't take long at all, active sync was so much better to work with and xp in general. i do like vista but dislike it at times cause it hogs up too much system resources etc.

Love this on my BlackJack I. You are awesome. Just need to wait for extended forecast. If I may put my 2 cents in....

For the extended forecast it would be nice if when the panel was not selected it could show the extended days with hi and low. Then when you select the panel it shows current condition. Kind of like the missed calls panel does.

Just add the name MyFaves back into your registry under both Chome places in HKLM. I mean under the general CHom key where it says pages, just edit that value to where you want your MyFaves to be. That's it, just do it in both places.:)

As far as I know, MyFaves IS in there. But, I guess I would need to write a custom setup.dll for the cab that looks at the registry setting first, searches for the TestUI string then adds it if it's not in there. It's a big pain in the ass...

But maybe people can just use OldSap's application to edit that part of the registry manually ? If not, I could write an app to do that, but it's not on my top things of things to do right now.

Okie, I just checked it out, Seems Solid so far - Only thing I don't like is that there's no weather icon :( and is there a way you can give another line of space after the title text. For example -

I think it'd look better that way because that's how it was in your previous version. The icons do look pretty darn good but I'd love it if it had that space as well as an icon for weather

Finally, I have a new panel with "programs" with red x's (20 pages)

What do i do? I just checked, some of them open. I'm guessing I need to set a path to icons and set it up with my own most used programs. Reason I ask is because I have your NRG Sliding Media Panel Launcher with 6 programs in there and it's conflicting with that as I have 2 panels for programs now.

Would you have that font your using in your screen shots? Thanks.

I'd suggest using one of Rick's ROMs, like version 14. It has all those nice icons builtin. There's no reason anyone should be stuck in the "dark ages" with a plain Kavana ROM :)

Reason why I haven't upgraded to Rick's ROMs is because of all the installed files already/all the settings/registry entries etc :(

Quick Question: Is it suppose to screw up the home screen if you try changing it? Finally, if you hit the center button - is it automatically suppose to update? :)

Yep it is supposed to screw up your homescreen. But if you reboot, your changes will appear. That's the major con about using this method, but a major pro is... it doesnt make your homescreen "freakout" every hour :)

The action keys dont do anything now... I cant make them do anything. You could map a key on the keyboard using the speed dial feature or smarttoolkit, to run "Update Weather" and it will update manually that way :)

Oh alright. So basically, reboot whenever you need to change your home screen. Makes sense.Finally, I'll look into the manual update later on.

As for the application, you've come a LONG WAY from where it was before. Thanks for fixing the clock. So far, so good. If i do come across any bugs, I would be sure to let you know.

Okay...I've realized the best thing is to either flash to one of Rick's ROM or learn to live w/out this .cab. lol It just doesn't wanna comply with Kavana's. I've come to grips with this. But here's the thing: I can't uninstall it. I've tried numerous times to remove the program from the 'Remove Programs' menu, but it won't do it. I've rebooted many a time to no avail. Now every so often I still feel the "double vibration" when the weather is supposed to update. That vibration only serves as a reminder of the .cab that's out of my reach! lol

Don't know. Remember I flashed my phone again with Ricky's v14, reintsalled your SlimCHome 2, BattMeter and then tried to install the Weather, but everytime I either refreshed my screen or did something else, the panel would dissappear or the darn thing wouldnt update. I'm going to try again now. I'm trying the SLIM one, anything I need to know?

Is there no way to add pages so it wont be all on the 1st page, that way you can add more deatailed data on each page without the clutter. i mean this is EXTREME nitpicking. heck i'd be happy with what you have, but if im being overly critical, that's what id like to see
