Well, I am sure this is a common question with any new phone. I have been trying to transfer some of the applications such as Pocket Plus, MS Streets, etc. from my sister's PPC and I have been unable to do so due to incompatibility. What software do you guys recommend that is compatible for the Dash?

I would like an e-mail software that works over Wi-Fi rather than T-Zones. I do not have the data service from T-Mobile but am constantly covered by Wi-Fi from my school.

In addition, I would like something that would keep my finances in check. I had a software called SplashMoney for the Palm that would synchronize with my bank account everytime I AutoSynched so that my account would automatically be updated. Anything like that for the Dash?

Finally, I am wondering if there is a MS Streets program for the Dash? As a new resident of Boston, I am constantly getting lost in this web of streets. Something to guide me from A to B would be essential.

Thanks again guys...

Using the e-mail on the dash will use the WiFi if you have a WiFi connection. Make sure your e-mail is setup to connect using "The Internet" and it will use WiFi and if you don't it will use T-Zones.

However I would wait for someone else to confirm what I'm saying just to be safe.

What do you mean by domain? I am using my school's e-mail service with the following information.

pop.ufl.edu
smtp.ufl.edu

Use this (http://microsoft.wdsglobal.com/emailplus) to help you setup your account.

Hmm in that case, you may browse around on your schools website and look for directions on how to setup pop3 e-mail programs with your schools e-mail service.

There are a lot of online resources for you to look into, maybe start with http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/default.mspx -- take a look at sites like http://www.handango.com to get an idea of the software available. Sounds like you're used to homework, you have some more now :)

Wow guys, thanks. The e-mail is working perfectly. I wish it had the ability of setting up 2 outgoing servers within the same account so that you could just choose what account you'd like to send from, like Outlook on the computer. But having 2 separate accounts isn't too bad.

Thanks again guys.

I see a Voice Notes program on the Dash, which will record both sides of a conversation for 60 seconds during a phone call.

However, when you try the Voice Recorder application located in the Accessories folder, it doesn't allow you to record during a phone call. The record option is simply unresponsive. But, as soon as the call ends (even when you are still in the app), you're allowed to record.

My question -- if someone knowledgable about these things would be so gracious enough to answer -- is this: Could there be a registry entry that allows you to record during conversations?

Just poking around I found a binary for: HKLM/SOFTWARE/HTC/Recorder

I have no idea what it's for. Maybe this can't be done? Thanks in advance. :)

(p.s. I know there are legal implications about this in certain states, etc. with notifying the other party. But sometimes when you're on the phone in a place you can't take notes and you're receiving directions, important info, phone numbers, etc. it would be so nice to simply say "hold on a sec, i wan't to record this.")

Voice Notes as the name implies is for taking voice notes, not for recording a conversation.
Vocal data going through the modem is not handled by this application.

That would actually be a good idea. Having directions recorded would be a major life saver. I'm sure someone will be able to tweak around it.

I'm searching for a project at the moment and am interested if anyone has any ideas for a type of application they'd like to see on the HTC s620. Perhaps something with wide appeal, or a missing utility? I can't promise the idea will go anywhere, but I'm interested in hearing what people think.

(Unfortunately an unlock program is out of my league)

I'm not sure if the majority of dash excalibur users will agree or if it will be possible at all for that matter, but the only gripe I have with the phone is the damn programs still running in the background after I've exited to the home screen, so an app that bypasses you having to go through task manager to shut everything running in the background off would be awesome.

Hi, I found a small program awhile back that I think works great! It doesn't shut the apps down automatically, but it makes it easier to close all at once. It has some other nice features as well. I use it on my C720W, first with WM5 and them with WM6. It worked fine with both versions. It worth a try and the price is right...FREE! It's called "SmartToolKit" Check it out. http://www.e-natives.web.id/ Cheers

So you mean a utility that automatically shuts all running programs down when you go back to the home screen? Sounds like a good idea. :) I suppose using check list you could include or exclude certain programs from this process.

dark0
14th August 2007, 08:51 PM
uccellino yep, thats exactly what I'm talking about, the check list would just be an icing on the cake :).

Tonerod I was actually looking for a more automated solution, I've used the smarttoolkit since alpha 2, mainly for the resource and other plugins, but the shutdown of all processes still reflects that of the excalibur (considering that the task manager is on your home screen in the list of an already ran programs).

I would love to see a proper way to organize the applications (meaning the list you see after you hit Start).

There's already an app that does that on wm5 and wm6. Jeyo personalizer (http://www.jeyo.com/products.asp) will let you rearrange/organize your start menu applications.

P.S. this will only allow you to edit 7 icons/apps, I've tried other organizers, and they seem to be the same way, I've also read somewhere that the OS on your sp will only allow you to edit the 7 items, how true that is I don't know but from what I've tried it seems to be this way.

As an alternative you can create folders in your start menu (through active sync on pc by going into \windows\start menu folder) and group similar apps in those folders, in turn minimizing the number of icons in your start menu.

Thanks, yes that is what I was refering to, but even those 2 methods together don't give the functionality I would like.

1. Jeyo only lets you order the first 7, so the rest remain in random order.

2. Jeyo doesn't let you put apps in folders.

3. File explorer doesn't let you change the order of apps they remain in random order.

4. File explorer doesn't let you move certain apps into folders. Some it lets you Move into Folders, others it only lets you Copy into folders so you get the app in both places.

I would love to see an app that allows you to reorder All of your apps, and to be able to put All of the apps in folders.

dark0
15th August 2007, 08:47 PM
Actually you can create a new folder and move ALL apps into it.

Just soft reboot your sp (to make sure no background processes have the apps you're moving locked), then open the \windows\start menu through active sync on your pc and off you go, EVERYTHING is movable and no dupes get left behind, cut&paste or drag and drop both work.

I jaunt into the q stuff for homescreens and various apps.
Theres one they have called candlelight.
it just sets your screen to dim or bright.
For some reason doesnt work on the s620.
At night when i read books i like to dim it out.
if when i close the tornado power manager with task manager as in close all apps then the backlight doesnt shut off any more.
In short candlelight for the s620 would be nice, should be simple as the candlelight app should work but doesnt ....
I dont use tornado as it runs in the background and basicly annoys me.

what do you think?

Now I just need a way to set the Order of my folders (since I have more than 7). And a way to organize apps within a folder.

Nope, actually that didn't work :(

I tried twice.

These four:
Messenger.ink
Windows Live.ink
File Explorer.ink
Voice Speed Dial.ink
Can not be moved. When you drag and drop it copies. When you right click you can only copy, not cut.

Also the folder that was already on the phone "Expert" does not show up in that list at all. However when I created a folder called "Accessories" The contents of the Expert folder shows up in that.

So as it turns out I have an Expert folder on my phone, but an Accessories forder on Windows>Start Menu, and they both have the same contents.

Actually as posting this I just solved the cut/copy issue. I copied and then deleted the originals. It made me confirm the delete as it said they were "read only".

I hope i didn't just ruin my phone...

Actually for task and app management. I use xbar. when you hold down the center button a small task manager window comes up and you can easily switch between applications with a button press. if you want to close an app you just hold down the button. I've had this little app since the first smartphones came out and it is still the first app I load onto my phone after ROM upgrades.

When I boot my Dash it show me almost 20mb of free program memory, but at the end of the day, after start and stop message, call history, calendar and others, I've got only 9 - 10mb free with every application close.

I'm running Tmobile Dash WM6 oficial Rom... this is a issue? It's normal? My friend have a Samsung WM6 Professional and it have almost 30mb free.

My phone:
Tmobile Dash
Tmobile Dash WM6 Rom (1.22.531.4)
Applications Running right now: 0
Free Program Memory: 9,036 KB
Used: 34.93 MB

Please, post informations about your phone!

Windows Mobile sucks at freeing up memory from programs that are no longer running. If I have 20 MB of memory when my phone starts up, I should have that same amount at the end of the day (w/ same programs and processes running). This isn't the case. My memory drops down to about 8 - 9 MB after a day of use. It sucks that I have to reboot the phone to free up the memory I should have available.

I reboot my phone every 2-3 days. It works ok. Don't worry about the memory too much. Use it as a normal phone. If it starts acting weird or gives you trouble, reboot.

I used to worry about it unnecessarily till I realised that even with low mem, it works ok.

why are you thinking about that? memory is there to be used. what windows does is, that it keeps the applications in memory as long as no other app wants to allocate more memory. and thats actually a good thing.

This is about windows not releasing memory, not apps being closed. IExplore, the largest hog, never gets kicked out of memory, and has to be forcefully killed to get the memory back.

thats wrong that windows does not close apps. it does. but only if required. it keeps the ppas in memory as long no other prog needs it. thats a feature!

why do you need 20megs of free mem? they are wasted. better have the frequently used apps still there.

I'd be willing to bet that IE is top priority and will never be automatically closed. No matter how low my memory gets (even to the point of failing to launch apps), IE stays open. Also, it won't close any app that doesn't respond to the WM_CLOSE message. I write all of my apps to not respond to WM_CLOSE unless I initiated the close, since I don't want windows terminating my app without the user wanting it done.

Why do I want more free memory available? Because after a few programs (some are bigger hogs than others) being launched/exited, my Dash can slow to a crawl or just freeze up. If I run AgendaOne (nice app...but big), OperaMobile and/or some other stuff...and I get a phone call, a lot of times it can just freeze my phone.

Welcome to Windows Mobile!

The only way I've found to minimize the occurrence of that is to run Oxios CloseApps regularly throughout the day and reboot the phone at least once (usually twice) a day. It's so annoying that it ALMOST makes me miss the mono-processing PalmOS in that regard.

Unfortunately, this mis-management of memory combined with the additional load of phone features just seems to overwhelm the tawdry 200MHz processor on the Dash. I'm curious if S620 users notice this as much or even at all...

I have posted this before but I guess people overlook it. There's a program called AppCloser which will automatically close your applications whenever you go back to the homescreen. You edit the Apps.txt file to set it. There's are a few given defaults and PIE(iexplore.exe) is included. If you do NOT know what the .exe file is, just run it then go to your task manager and find out. You can input 32 programs at most the this moment. This is not useful to all programs but it is a life saver in memory management.

i never had that. i tried it several times. I opened every game and ie, contacts, calendar and tasks. I went to homescreen and waited. Next time I entered IE it was freshly booting up. So it must have been closed meanwhile. Don't get me wrong. I also reboot my phone from time to time and I also use task manager to close apps sometimes. But I don't think, that such programs make sense. The main programs I use can stay in memory. I think it is a feature.

Take a look to celetask.

Besides being a great task manager, it also allows to free memory as oxios hibernate does by issueing a WM_HIBERNATE command.

One of its strongest points is that allows to have a system shortcut mapped and then all of its features can also be mapped to any key.

It's really useful and it really helps to keep memory free.

Hello all!

I'm using a DASH and came across a little app that I like a lot called BT Toggle (or something like that). It is an app that simply toggles your bluetooth connection off and on. I use that mapped to a shortcut I have simple one button access to bluetooth without having to open Comm Manager. What I'd like is a program that does the exact same thing for the WiFi connection on the DASH. Does anyone know of an existing program like this? If not, is there anyone that can build one?

Thanks for checking this out!!!

hi guys im new here

just bought a s621 from rogers

and i tried to install programs and games the fils i download have a bunch of files.. where do i put them? how do i install them?

and is there a way i could unlock my phone safely? what the best way

thx

programs and games made for your phone will have a .cab extension if they are to be installed from your handset. If they are .exe, they are designed to install from your PC via Activesync. If you have .cab files, just put them on your storage card and use your file explorer on the phone to find them. Click on them and they will install, just follow the directions.

Being a Rogers phone, you will also likely need the certificate: get it here (http://downloads.rogers.com/wireless/products/phones/HTC/SP_AllowCertificateInstall.cab)

the problem is.... when i dl those files the have a file in XML format and whenever i try the copy it in my phone it says that the phone is not compatible with those format and when i tried to open the file via the file explorer it just opens a webpage with some script and codes thing

gospeed.racergo

the files need to be kept inside the .cab folder. Do not extract it or open it. Just drop it in the phone whole and it will figure it out on its own.

This is an awesome site. Check it out, it has many useful programs for the dash and it even includes NES emulator, meaning that you can run NES on your dash.

Here is the site: dashapps.googlepages.com

And here is a tutorial on how to install NES and the roms (games): http://youtube.com/watch?v=9T9Hd4F49Uw

I downloaded Dash Weather from the site, but it doesn't work. Radars work, but not the forecasts. I read a thread on it in Howard Forums, and the developer has not been heard from there since August. Wish he would get it working.

Could you try this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=355387

I am trying to install TomeRainder3 on my s620.
I installed spear (very useful), then edited the cab file, so that it could be installed on the s620. (the important part was to set min,max OS version to 5 and 10)
Now it installed correctly, but when I try to execute it it says that it is missing one of its components. I understand that means that dll are missing. Are there some general purpose dll that any ppc program will need? I also tried to install SyncTime with the same results...

I just joined your forum today, the members here seem to be extremely helpful compared to some of the other forums I've read over.

I did read back about 10 pages and tried searching before asking. I don't want to waste anyones time if directions have already been posted. I didn't see anything so here goes.

I downloaded totalcommand, phregedit, and a few other programs. I unrared the files, opened explore in activesync, and then copied the unrared folders to explore. I have tried copying them into different folders in explore. Then I sync the phone again, turn it off, then back on, find the folder on the phone, open it and click on install. It goes through an install process, but I can never find the program and have no way to use it.

I was able to use pocketnester, but thats it.

I don't know if I'm putting the folders in the wrong place or maybe I should just be copying in the files with no folder or what.

I could really use some help, so if anyone can give some direction or point me to a previous thread that explains what to do that would be great.

Thanks for any help

put the cab files for the programs in a folder on the phone (like "temp") and then using the file explorer on the phone itself navigate to that folder, highlight the cab file, and run it (silver button in the center of the nav key works to run the file too).

1wired1
8th February 2008, 12:22 AM
Thanks for the reply. I am not able to find the temp folder when I open explore. Is the cab file just the setup file or is it all of the files in the unrared folder? If it's just the setup file what do I do with the rest of the files?

Sorry to be a pain. Not sure why I'm having so much trouble figuring this out.

Thanks

SirKeats
8th February 2008, 02:46 AM
it doesn't have to be the temp dir where you put the .cab file for the program. that was just a suggestion. anyplace you want to put it is fine. just remember where it is on the phone and then navigate to that location using the file explorer on the phone. then just run the .cab file.

some programs come with a .exe that you run on your computer... so if you extracted a rar to find an exe file, try running the .exe from your computer. otherwise just the single cab file for each proggy is all you should need.

1wired1
8th February 2008, 03:59 AM
Still not working. My setup files say xml document, maybe my computer is using the wrong program to open them? I don't see anything that says .cab

If you use a bluetooth GPS receiver there is no comparison between google Maps and Microsoft Live Search. Live search does everything a regular GPS navigvation program does, except voice directions. It incorporates the GPS into the route and shows what your next turn is and how far away it is. It will also reroute if you go off course. Google maps just puts a dot on the map and you have to follow your route yourself. Live search is way better.

Are you currently using Kavana's 6.1 Rom? If so it comes with a free up memory app. If not u can always download SKTOOLS

I have been looking for a while for a program that
allows you to hide icons that you don't use. So that when you got to
the start screen you only see the icons that you use. I only use 8-10 things and
it's a pain to have to scroll through the screen to get to what I want.

not very well, only limited to a few games that work... ms.pacman, dig dug.. very simple games...... and you also have to stretch the image, so some games look weird.
They end up looking like this

MS. Pacman On Dash with M.A.M.E.:

no, but if you look on my games list , i have a non- ms.pac man, pacman, galaga, dig dug, and super pacman ( also non mame) version of the games.
they are not full screen ( actually they are, but they used screen art for screen filler, the game itself is not full screen)

If the file is in .exe format, most likely its an .exe you will have to run on your PC, while your phone is connected to your PC via activesync. If the file is in .cab format, then you can install it directly from your phone.

SmarttoolkitRC08
SkTools Standard (Best Maintenance Program)
TCPMP 0.81
Sprite Backup (Best Backup Program ever)

Palringo (IM Program - Love it)
Opera Mini (Final Version is out)
Google Maps
CHome Configurator
CHome Weather
Yahoo Go! 3.0

Games:

Astraware Boardgames (Haven't installed many but this game is sick, has all the board games - will be installing a couple today)

I'm new here... this caught my attention... could I have this sent to me as well? :D

as for the applications I have installed:

M$ WM 6.1 Appears to be a hacked version of HTC's official WM 6.1 ROM!! =] so fast!!!
SmartToolKit RC9 - hopefully everyone knows what this is... adds a traditional "start bar" and sexy slideout menus!
NES Emulator (PocketNESterPlus - runs beautifully WITH sound!)
SNES Emulator (PocketSNES - runs beautifully but only WITHOUT sound! - and no, i don't get the wrap-around screen or program freezing when loading a ROM!)
GameBoy Advanced Emulator (runs beautifully WITH sound!)
Genesis Emulator (have only tested Streets of rage, graphics rock, sound is ehh... haven't changed settings yet though)
GameGear Emulator (I never use it! just have it because i can)
Agile Messenger I saw someone had Palringo, I'm gonna give that a go!
Audio Manager - create, edit, and remove my playlists right on my phone... came with the hacked HTC ROM, dunno if it's part of WM6.1 or not, although it LOOKS like it came with it
CeleTask - handy program that puts all my system info in a convenient package, and even adds some perks like free memory, etc... came with the hacked HTC ROM
Flash Lite - of course, this allows me to watch SWF's online... came with the hacked HTC ROM, whether or not it's built into WM6.1, I don't know
Google Maps - GET LOST! then find your way back =]
MyMobiler if you've ever cracked your screen, or fear you might, this is a MUST have!
Registry editor - looks like regedit on xp (icon wise)... works like TotalCommander except for some reason I like this better... came with the hacked HTC ROM, part of the Resco Explorer
Resco Explorer - feature packed version of explorer, has lots of useful options like "copy to" and "send to" and other stuff that the built-in version omitted... came with the hacked HTC ROM
SlingPlayer Mobile - I work in a call center... my phone is my best friend, and this is reason #1
HTC Streaming Media - allows me to watch my YouTube <3
TCPMP w/ full codecs (although H.264 or whatever is really slow!)
Command processor - looks like a simple DOS prompt... came with the hacked HTC ROM
Free Memory - open the program, it releases unused DLL's from memory (I assume...) works great!... came with the hacked HTC ROM
OMAPClock - Overclocked the processor to 240Mhz stable so far, will push further later... came with the hacked HTC ROM
Orneta Calculator - appears to be a scientific calculator... came with the hacked HTC ROM
Opera Mobile - full intarwebz =] yessssss
WM5torage - converts the phone into an oversized thumbdrive... came with the hacked HTC ROM
AlReader 2 - eBook reader... came with the hacked HTC ROM

Also, I don't know if this is part of WM6.1 or not (since I have the chopped and screwed HTC ROM... which is friggin slick!) but I can now create and modify excel and word documents... woot :)

anyway... about my guitar hero III mobile

It's a shareware trial, 2 minutes to play a game... paid $10 for full version, had my code the next day, DEFINITELY WORTH IT!!! I prefer to use this over PocketNester because the emulator incorporates VOLUME CONTROL (helpful for me because I play games at work [call center environment] ) :D

SmartGear handles my NES, Genesis and GameBoy emulation needs, while PocketSNES 1.53 handles my SNES needs (although soon, bitbank will be finishing his SNES emulator testing for PPC/SP and it will be a free addition for those that paid for any previous version of the software) =]... sometimes I'll load up PocketNester because of the way it handles saved states, but mostly SmartGear now =] it's AWESOME

yeah something like that...not for that price though LOL
or even a spell checker, as you type (SMS or word documents, etc.)

The one feature i loved when i had a Razor V3T....ability to lock certain menus on your phone, individually.
Whether it would be the phonebook, text messages, recent calls, etc.

Does anyone know of a good data monitor? Ive tried the 2 ive seen and they dont seem to work to well. The 2 ive tried are Spb's GPRS Monitor and Efficasoft's GPRS Traffic Monitor.
It doesnt matter if they cost money, as long as its not like 30-40 dollars or something.

I basiclly just want to know how much data i use via opera mini, google maps, coreplayer, ect.

i'm looking for a gps program. I'm not sure how GPS works on the phone and if there are any special requirements, but i dont have a data plan (internet connection) on my phone so i can only connect at a wifi hotspot, which means that the GPS progam that im looking for will work offline.

I'm looking for a GPS program that would work as a stand-alone offline version of google maps. I dont need it to tell me real-time where im located and my movement, but something thatll show a map with directions just in case i get lost or need to find some place. (i live in miami, FL btw)

I'm using smart2go. It allows you to download maps to your phone, and use an external gps.

If you don't have an external GPS, you can still use it, but then it only acts as a map viewer.

There are a few options, non really work all that well. TomTom 5 and Destinator are the two that have officially released SmartPhone versions. Both require a minimum 2 gig memory card and are memory hogs. Forget about using your phone for ANYTHING else while either of these two are running.

I strongly suggest you get a data plan then get Mapquest Navigator... thats what I have been using (after trying all the others.. and I do mean ALL of the others) and it is simply the best choice. I had a dedicated GPS device (Mio and then a Roadmate) I got rid of them both.. thats how good Mapquest navigator is!

Sorry guys, we mods are very sensitive right now, as this forum has been needing, and is still needing some form of order. This is not an excuse in any way for our "ganging up on you" , but merely just a re-inforcement that "We Are Watching". We will be more conscieous in the future and only have one mod at a time make comments or warnings about rules , or potential rules violations.

A simple google search shows TONS of applications, both free and non-free that will do what you ask. Some of the paid-for applications will even let you choose things like a candle or a fireplace display so your phone can be "mood lighting." Check some of the software sites listed in the wiki, or modaco. It's all out there.

Since when has a "what programs do you have..." become a request section?
If you really want to know where to get something that you cant find wouldnt it be better to PM the person rather than "openly" promote piracy... we all know it goes on but all these requests are hyjacking the topic.

Ahem... anyway, Ive only had mine a couple of weeks so I havnt filled it all up yet but basically I am using Coreplayer with a load of Family Guy Episode to watch... Guitar Hero III with ALL the available DLC so far and Revival )the shareware version) everything else is what came included although Ive added extra frames and Templates etc...
The ROM im running on is the BT Broadband Anywhere ROM v2.37 , and it seems to have very good wifi software and I can use my phone as a homephone and internet phone because it uses the info from my homehub.

Guitar Hero III is fantastic though, im hoping that a CCG type of game will be released sometime soon.

i'm looking for a gps program.

(i live in miami, FL btw)

thanks :o

Check out this and the s620 is supported McGuider http://www.mcguider.com/

doesnt having active sync give you the same advantages? I mean, when i reloaded my rom, all i had to do is sync up my contacts again. Also, if i make a change to my contacts, i dont have to remember to launch any program to sync them, it does it automatically.

dashwire is pretty good. I love the fact that it saves the pictures and texts and what not. Yes, Active sync can do most of this or you can manually but you can organize your stuff all at once with dashwire.

One thing I don't like with Dashwire is that it won't read your memory card. Like if you have your photo's being diverted to your memory card then it won't pull them up. It has to be on the main memory.

Either way a nifty piece of software.

Well it depends what service he has cause I know Rogers tends to charge a little more then t mobile for the internet plan.

Yeah I've seen that over at howardforums. Rogers charges up to fifty bucks for a handfull of MB, no unlimited

Has anybody found a GPRS traffic monitor for WM6.1 yet?

Doubt you'll find one any time soon. Is there a version that writes its info to the registry or a file in its directory ? If that's the case, I can make a version that will display that info on the 6.1 slide screen :)
