Opera 9.5 - Build 781 - Release Notes
-------------------------------------
This build has been taken from a HTC Diamond ROM.
As with the build 405 release, we have made some adjustments:
- Able to uninstall
- WM5 version
- QVGA version
Note on this build: works great; scrolling seems smoother; always installs to \Windows\Opera9.
Note on the WM5 version: we performed the same trick as for the 405 build, but this build has NOT been tested on an actual WM5 device.
Note on the QVGA version: the skin used in the 405 PROPER build (thanks to whoever made that skin) could not be used, as there are a bunch of new icons in this build. We had to create a new QVGA skin, and though it mostly works fine, it could still be improved upon. We also adjusted the scrolling/zoom settings as was done in the 405 PROPER, as that works a lot better than the default settings from the VGA version.
- Have fun!
I thought I'd copy and paste the release notes here, instead of people searching. Hope this helps. It'll be good to post the opera's latest version here as well.

Yes, I am installing it as I speak to my card. I just tried 9.5 out for the first time last night, an older build, but I was quite impressed.

Well, you can choose to install to card, but for me it didn't work, all necessary files go to \windows\opera9 as mentioned in the release notes. Can anybody "fix" this? Would be really great!

Possibly. It depends on Opera internals... does it always look for files in \Windows ? May be possible, but impossible to say unless somebody tries to modify it and it works (or not).

You r right...I've gone back to my older version (Build 405) because it is not a cab but just Files in a zip-file so I can put almost everything to my SD-Card...but I think some things where modified to make it work like this. When I have time I will look into the cab and try to make a copy-only version by using the older release...

1. Can someone mirror it here? Don't have a ppcgeeks account so can't download.
2. What is the difference between QVGA and QVGA_wm5 version? It's hard to figure that out from their release notes.
Again, thanks for the heads up!

For some odd reason, I can't use it. It installs, but it won't load and stays stuck. I have to reboot it. But I can attest to the fact that it uninstalls:D. I have opera mini, but can't test it to know whether or not it's better than opera mini, (Netfront and Opera Mini are my favorite browsers.)

I just installed it and there is a big difference between this and the old build: Even on the logo during the startup it forced all the background applications to close. This means, is takes much more RAM then the old build.
I hope, this stays still usable on my device.
edit: Maybe it was the default homepage or the first startup, but now it seems to be more memoryfriendly.
Bookmarks (opera6.adr) from application data\opera9 copied over to windows\opera9 works well.
And it seems, that the size of the bookmarks is still VGA. Looks much bigger, than in the last build :)

This may actually replace NetFront 3.5 preview as my default browser.
There are some oddities though:
1) Text entry messes up the screen (yes, I'm using it here).
2) Zoomed-out links don't seem to click.
3) I had to soft-reset after install before it would work at all.
That said - great build, mostly works.
Flash works for me (even YouTube) with flash 7 installed.

1/ working really slowly on my tytn II.
2/ seems some item menu buggy : i've a number instead of text in the menu for example
3/ More over, the user agent seems to be different so i can't use it "on air".
I've tried to play with opera config (type url : about:config, without http, in the adress bar). There is a "UASpoofing" item, but you can only choose a "numer", impossible to type the UA settings.
If somebody knows the good setting for SFR (Vodaphone in France), i'm really interrested !

it allows you to load it faster, it basically loads it up into the memory so it launches really fast ;).

I switched last night from opera mini on my 8525 (AT&T). So far everything is working as it should. PCM keyboard seems to be working great. I wish opera would incorporate navigation using hardware keys on their regular browser, (one feature of mini I like better). Rendering seems a bit slower but that is understandable considering this is an unofficial build. Has anyone tried editing the .config yet?

I don't see any improvement over the latest 9.405 alpha.
It's a memory hog as before (12mb RAM for a page is a memory hog).
It crashes as before when out of memory, or for nothing at all - sometimes www.google.com is enough for it.
It also still crashes when I rotate the screen on my HTC Universal.
The UI is way more sluggish than 9.405, just look at how much time the menu takes to open!
Zooming & redrawing brings my device down on its knees, while it was a snap in 9.405.
Also page rendering speed is on par or slower than 9.405.
You have to just use netfront 3.5, latest build 519... they even fixed the 100%-CPU-bug...

In the ppcgeeks.com forum I read, that this improves the speed a bit:
In opera:config under user prefs enable the turbo mode and the automatic RAM cache.
And I removed this Opera Preloader from the startup: No real difference in the loading time, but now opera9.exe really gets closed.

RUNs great on touch cruise/Polaris/orbit2 !!! Much better than the good opera mini ! Time to say good by. Test it ist really a big different and great but:
- maybe a little bit slower because of not using a proxi but, scrolling is much smoother, no crashes or anything
- needs lot of ram
- think for running smooth and without crashing or somthing you need a newer ppc with 400 mhz an much RAM/ROM like Kaiser/touchcruise or similar.
, so OLDER phones should use opera mini or test it and dont say its bad, because i think this one is made for faster ppcs !
- htc toucruise keyboards dont work, just normal windows keyboard, so use the new Diamond Keyboard !
- the Translations arent ready jet, so on settings you see often just Numbers, no text

So you are blaming Opera because your network is blocking it?
LOL.
You have to just use netfront 3.5, latest build 519...
Is that an official build or a leaked version? If it's an official build it's hardly comparable to an unofficial leaked pre-alpha of Opera...

As user of Opera (rev 405), i managed to get Vodafone France properly rendered on a P3600 (Trinity).
What i did:
opera:config as URL
In "User Prefs", you search for those 2 values:
UA MIDP Profile -> Put your preferred UA
UA Phone Software -> Put your preferred UA
In "Network", search for :
UA Post Platform -> put "PPC"
UA User Agent Platform -> Put your preferred UA
My UA that works perfectly is the KS-20 (LG):
"Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) Vodafone/1.0/LG-KS20/V10b Browser/IEMobile/7.6 MMS/LG-MMS-WINCE-V1.0/1.2 Java/LGVM/1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0"

really slow loading pages on HTC touch CDMA.
There doesn't seem to be many options to configure either.
Opera mini is at least twice as fast in loading pages.
mine loads extremely fast on my CDMA touch. i am using the verizon xv6900

Perhaps there is less modification than the ones listed but configured like that, it works like a charm for me on Vodafone (tv, music..) and the Web
thanks for these items !
nothing more on "User Agent" Part ? done that but nothing better ... freezing my tytn II
just a question : what is you WM version ? 5 6 or 6.1 ?

Hi! Does your onscreen HTC Touch keyboard work? Mine doesn't :( Neither does the HW keyboard.
Only the full qwertz Keyboard works for me. The same as in Build 405.

here is a link to a MUCH better german language file:
http://www.ppc-welt.info/community/showpost.php?p=1073282&postcount=9
download it, unzip it, rename the lng file to "de.lng" and put it in the Opera Folder ("local", i think) and put the new "settings" file in the settings folder of opera.
I`m still missing one or two translations but now nearly all is translated.

Already enabled the turbo mode and the automatic RAM cache and changed Max Server Connections and Max Allowed to 10 but still takes ages to open pages. Does anyone know of an option that loads pictures in low quality such as in Opera Mini?

- the Translations arent ready jet, so on settings you see often just Numbers, no text
hi,
i've got a kaiser and i think it is really slow... sometimes freezzin... i've 55MB memory free
but (!) i'm only on WM 6.0pro. Do you think an upgrade du 6.1 is necessary ?

6.0 or 6.1 should be the same, but we all should remember that this version is made for a 600mhz Diamond with graphic drivers. And it doesnt use a proxi server like the opera mini. Why i prefer this and no loger the mini:
- automatic fullscreen (no bars at all) !
- real smooth scrolling,
- in and out silde by douple touch
- textinput in the page (not this mini bullshit with going to portrait mode...)
but i must say,
- i have somtimes little problems with choosing a link
- page loading lasts a little bit longer but no problem now (got HSDPA:D)
- the buttons react a little bit slow.
but after all: GREAT !

Is that an official build or a leaked version? If it's an official build it's hardly comparable to an unofficial leaked pre-alpha of Opera...
It is not leaked, but it's a "concept" version, enframed in what seems to be Access' eternal beta phase.

When you all say "this opera version kicks ass!11!!!one!1one" I think you have yet to try netfront 3.5 build 519.
It simply blows opera away in every aspect, except plugin support, which is non-existent ... (but flash7 will eventually hang opera or eat out all available RAM, and will not work properly after all , so it's not that goodness having it on a PPC)

Exactly. So comparing it to a leaked alpha version which was never intended to be used on anything but a Diamond is kind of futile... I wouldn't be surprised if this Opera build contains lots of Diamond specific optimizations.

Except you are comparing an officially released and supported version intended to work on a wide variety of devices to a leaked alpha build designed to run on one single phone.
Why are you assuming that we haven't tried Netfront? It's been out for ages. But never mind. I thought we were discussing Opera here...

Skyfire is an official and supported beta release meant to work on a variety of phones. The Opera version you are using is a leaked alpha build intended to be used on one specific phone. If you want to judge Opera, you should at least wait for an official build.

okay my Buglist:
- doupple tapping: allways the same: in a forum on first side it zooms in right, when i open a thread and want to zoom in, it zooms in just a little bit ?????
- when zooming in and the page is not fully loaded, it zooms out again
- HTC-Keyboards of touchcruise not working, also some of the new diamond keyboards
- all buttons, settings an confiq react slow
- somtimes problems to touch a link, no reaction, wrong link opens
- missing translations
- youtube: opera overgives to videolink to media straming, nothing happens, but plays some videos direct in the webpage
- much to big favorites Icons/Side
but after all: very smooth scrolling, automatic fullscreen, font rendering and and and...., cant wait for a official version !!!!

NF 3.5 is not officially supported nor meant to run on a wide variety of devices. They expressly state that the browser was tested only on one device (tytn 2, IIRC). And actually, if you can program an application equally or better than a gorilla with a keyboard would do, your application will run on a wide variety of devices without modification.
Why are you assuming that we haven't tried Netfront? It's been out for ages. But never mind. I thought we were discussing Opera here...It's been out for ages, but real improvements are on the version only.

Uh, I beg to differ.
It is an officially released test version, as opposed to Opera, which is a leaked alpha which was never intended for the public to use.
It is meant to work on more phones, as opposed to the leaked Opera build, which has been made specifically for one single phone. Netfront hasn't only been tested on that phone, it has been designed specifically to work only on that phone.
That the leaked Opera works on other phones is a mere coincidence, whereas Netfront working on other phones is expected because it hasn't been specifically designed only to work on one single phone.
And actually, if you can program an application equally or better than a gorilla with a keyboard would do, your application will run on a wide variety of devices without modification.
You can do that, but clearly, this build was created specifically for the Diamond. It's optimized for the Diamond's hardware and software setup. A general version of Opera Mobile 9.5 would be optimized for general use cases, as opposed to being tied closely to one specific device and relying on, for example, hardware acceleration.
This is not about the ability to make something run on more phones or not. It's about the fact that Opera has created this build only to run on the Diamond.

To me it sounds like that they tried to conserve memory usage. They didn't succeed, but that producded that annoying side effect of extra slugginesh. If the program qas made specifically for the diamond, it'll be using GL-ES graphic acceleration, which would make it not even start on software-only PDAs like my Universal.

Exactly. Their goal is a general-purpose browser for multiple phones. The leaked Opera build is only intended to work on the Diamond.
To me it sounds like that they tried to conserve memory usage.
HTC said that they worked on a custom Opera-based browser for the Diamond, so obviously the build is only supposed to be working on that phone. That it even runs on something else is purely accidental.

Or maybe there are fallbacks due to the alpha nature of the build. Or something like that.
The point is that unlike Netfront, this leaked Opera build was specifically designed only to run on a certain device.

I installed the Opera 781 build on my At&t Tilt and I really like it but there are a few things bothering me:
1: I cannot get it to connect via wifi. It will only use the 3G connection and will not recognize the faster wifi connection. If I turn my phones radio off and turn on wifi on only it will not connect at all. Is there a setting I can change where it will connect to wifi preferentially? It connects to wifi just fine on other programs.
2: I cannot figure out how to import favorites. Any ideas how?
Otherwise this program rocks and I cannot wait for a full release!

Thats because opera automatically loaded the proxy information from connection settings. You need to go to opera:config , find the proxy settings, and delete the cingular stuff. You can use the search function to search for "proxy". I can't remember where exactly they are as i don't have it in front of me atm.

Delete the device specific language from Windows\Opera9\Locale, and you get the English language, which is complete.

Hey Paul I was wondering how you can make it work with flash. Flash does not seem to work with mine.

... however there are still two annoying bugs I've noticed:
1) word completion doesn't work when filling out form fields. This even works on Opera Mini so not sure why it doesn't here. It's quite disappointing as word completion is very useful.
2) doesn't seem to render special HTML characters properly e.g. on Google page the copyright symbol at the bottom next to 2008 comes out as © instead of Đ
Also user settings seem to require the page to be zoomed in before selecting otherwise they come out too small to read.
Anyone else seen these problems/know how to fix?
Regards,
Ashley

The scrolling is very smooth, literally no tearing or redrawing when scrolling (after the page loads ofcourse). Scroll too fast and it does what the iphone does, it displays that white and grey light checkerboard background until that part of the page is loaded. I don't think it is taking advantage of touchflo, but still good.
Pages load faster than PIE but Lacks plugin support, like flash.
This is by no means the end all and be all of browsers, but when the final version comes out, it is going to be the best (unless firefox mobile doesn't suck).
