View Full Version : Music with DRM and flashed ROMs - not working right

So, I've tried Just2Clean, Open Touch 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0, Touch-It (forget which version), and a Carbon-Elisha or something like that....

Protected music files do not play on any of these flashed ROMs.

I have a Rhapsody To Go subscription, basically lets me download what I want for a monthly subscription. I can't burn to CD, but I can sync to devices and play on PC as long as I have a subscription.

The software on the PC was able to sync these songs to my TMobile Wing, and they were able to be played on my device using Windows Media Player.

That has stopped working once I flashed my ROM. When I try to now play a protected file, Windows Media Player just sits there (plays nothing), and as soon as I exit it, the software running on the device starts crashing. Exe's start failing like biotouch and rpllog and I have to reboot the device to get back to normal.

This used to work before ROM flashing.

Anyone know why this is, or how to fix this?

Anyone else here actually able to play protected content on a flashed ROM?

Just wondering if you tried my v5.0 Org version which should be pretty close to the original rom.

Yes, I tried 5.0 org and same thing.......

I got a PM from another user, and basically he got it working with this workaround...maybe it will give you some insight as to what is going on.

I downloaded the music using Rhapsody software to my PC.
I closed Rhapsody.
I opened Windows Media Player
I used Windows Media Player to sync the protected music to my Wing
***I played the protected music using HTC Audio Manager
Windows Media Player will still fail and cause the system to crash if you try to play this same file

So, the protected files work ONLY with audio manager when sync'd using Windows Media Player

Using the Rhapsody software to sync causes both players to fail. (This was working before flashing my ROM)

Windows Media player basically is still failing on protected content whether you use Rhapsody or Windows Media player on the PC to sync to the device. (used to work before flashing my ROM)

I've been doing a little bit of reading...

could windows media player be trying to load some codecs/dll's it can no longer find for protected media.

I saw some threads talking about how one of the tcpmp players that was release had a problem playing .wma files because one of the dll's had been renamed during one of the windows mobile/media player upgrades.

could audio manager and windows media player be trying to load a certain codec/dll when it encounters a file that is "protected" and transferred using Rhapsody?

Why when the music is synced with windows media player on the pc to the device does audio manager work?

what could change in the destination audio file between syncing with windows media player, or Rhapsody?

The DRM might have worked because of the different version of Media Player that your phone manufacturer chose to put in. This is determined by the OS's build. Or maybe we've stripped out needed files.

when you say "media player" do you mean in a generic sense? I am using windows media player on tmobile wing which was stock wm6

there must be something missing somewhere.

if audio manager can play a protected track IF synced with Windows Media player on the PC, theoretically Windows Media Player on the mobile device should also be able to play the same file.....

what is the difference between audio manager and windows media player on the mobile device that will not let one of them play a protected .wma file?

as why I cannot sync using the Rhapsody software anymore when it used to work with a stock Tmobile Wing ROM I haven't a clue.

"Media player" would mean Windows Media Player in this case. Try downloading and installing my old CleanROM. It is a based off tmobile's ROM. The Media Player is exactly the same exact version. If it works, then it's the version of WMP. If it doesn't, it's something we took off.

That's the one. It's an oldie, but it might help us figure out where the problem is coming from.

tried it on that rom...

windows media player still fails the same way, after trying to run protected content it makes the system start crashing, all executables start returning invalid win32 application error...

audio manager has more luck playing. I can actually play tracks using audio manager that were synced with media player on the pc AND the rhapsody software.....but they play and it will randomly make the moble device crash just like the media player.

im lost, ive spent 2+ days flashing all kinds of roms and testing this out already....

That's fine. SOMEONE has to test it. :)
So... it must be something we're deleting while cooking... but what...

just to add to the mix here... since loading a 6.1 rom on my wing and dash my album art has disappeared. this used to be a nice piece but something has been taken out here as well. doubt that it is related but thought since we were on the subject of windows media i would toss it out there

Maybe it's sqlcemobile... Download my JustClean kitchen and try to build a version of my ROM with SQLCEMOBILE (or if you can find it, install the cab on your current ROM) and see if it works.
