walshieau, can you check on your phone the GSM and UMTS bands supports?
The (pre-release) device on the coolsmartphone review shows it seems to support all 5 UMTS bands  I wonder if thats just because its a test build (and doesnt have the antennas) and if thats true in the final release one.
I guess its really important to know for all the US guys. This may actually be the best phone that works on t-mobile in the USA.

Hehe. I can often get a signal in the Emirates Stadium, but the networks are still overloaded sometimes.
In random places in Ireland, such as the Castlegregory perninsula, the signal can get a bit dodgy. I think the only network that perninsula has is Vodafone.

For big events like concerts etc they bring in picocells to add capacity. I dont know if they bother for football games.
Basically a cell can handle a limited number of calls (the exact number depends on how many frequencies they use of that cell). So to increase call capacity per sq mile, they just use more cells but make them smaller. That works for densly populated events like football games, concerts etc, where you can have cells that cover only 10 meters.
In fact all along oxford street you have these piconodes every 10 meters or so to handle the capacity!
Anyway.. getting reception != being able to make a call. The cell may be too overloaded to make calls, but it should still let you register if no better alternative cell is available. The amount of cell phones that would need to be on the cell to overload to a point it can't let you register is huge.
So if you don't have reception that generally means there isnt a strong enough signal.

a friend of mine who does work like that told me about them. They're not everywhere, just some areas - and only on certain streets/dark corners. I guess the amount of video would get rediculous if they had them everywhere.
They have one of those pinhole lenses on them and capture everything happening near the lamp post in great detail, and everything in one direction in progressivly worse detail. I couldnt find a picture online - probably my search terms - but i'll see if he knows the proper name for them.
They are usually in high drug usage areas.

When i used to work in GSM, i talked to the guys who work on the BTS's (the radio towers). They have to wear this badge which changes colour when they are exposed to too much radiation and should go on a break. Usually they turn off the entire BTS if anyone is going to work on it (i mean get reallly close to it), but alot of times thats not feasible. This guy was telling me its the best job ever... 10 mins work.. 20 mins rest.. 10 mins work.. 20 mins rest etc. He was sure his internal organs were suffering for it tho.

Detecting taps is not that hard actually if they transmist anything at all.
Blocking transmistion is easy too. Hard wired taps are alot harder to find. But then also much harder to install and keep hidden.
The best tap for a phone line for example is a coupling tap on the line outside. If you stick it somewhere hidden where the cable heads into the dirt, and transmit from there no one will every find it
It also leaves no trace to the phone audio unlike what u see in some crap movies showing clicks and stuff.

Actually RF power decays exponentially with distance, so to cover long distance its either directed e.g scanning radar, or amplified using RF horns so not much use as a weapon, unless at close range.

Yeah, the higher the frequency, the more power you need to get it to travel the same distance as a lower frequency one. A neat link into GSM....
The 900Mhz bands are split into 2 and sold to the first 2 networks in the country. The next two networks get the 1800Mhz range.
But because 1800Mhz requires more towers to cover the same area as the signal doesnt travel as far at the same level at the source 1800Mhz networks are compensated by having a slightly wider frequency range in the spectrum than 900 networks. (1800 networks can't just up the power since power levels are regulated and you might zap the guys closest to the tower).
As a result they use more frequencies in each cell and their call capacity per cell is higher than 900 networks. This balances out the number of towers needed!

Great in cities where populations are densely packed, not so good in rural areas.
someone1234
29th May 2008, 01:42 AM
well it still balances out.. in rural areas they use higher power, make the mast higher, and let it cover a much wider area - a macrocell. Again the greater frequency allocation means they need less macrocells in any given area and it balances the frequency side of things out.
anyway.. i should go do some work now!

Subject: Question about HTC Touch Diamond availability
Hello,
I am very interested in purchasing HTC Touch Diamond once it is available. As a matter of fact I would pre-order it if you could answer me how certain you are that you will have them in stock on June 9th? I am asking this because most of the other retailer sites state that they will have it on June 19th.
Also I would like to know is it going to be a retail version with 192 MB and not 128 MB of RAM memory? Will you have that excellent HTC slip case available, also, since it is not included in the box?

So, sorry, with all the conflicting information out there, and with the existence of videos of "pre-production" or "test" units, its hard to know for certain. So, I ask those who have somehow managed to purchase a production unit:
What GSM and UMTS bands are listed in the Phone Settings | Bands page?
Please confirm for us people still trying to decide if it will work for us.
