So, are there any working emulators out there for the Dash? I have been lurking on qusers.com and saw that a lot of people have been getting NES, SNES, and GB emulators to work well with their Q but I haven't been able to get it working on the Dash. Any ideas?

I've tried a couple as well, the only one I can get to work is Pocket Nester. The only problem is the resolution looks like crap and I won't work well with the Dash.
I also Tried PocketNester Plus with not luck.

Hi PoNeH,
I also posted to your thread on MoDaCo....
I sort of have AvAlon5's version of smartsnes working on my dash. However, the image does not display properly. The screen is cutoff on the right and wraps around on the left. I've heard this works for the Q, because the Q uses a funky version of GAPI for backwards compatibility with old software.
I've posted a request to AvAlon5, asking to update with support for QVGA landscape like in the dash.
see this thread
http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=243520&st=20&gopid=784084&#entry784084
you can also get his software close to the beginning of the thread.
Perhaps someone here on xda-developers can help with some sort of GAPI wrapper to get programs not designed for landscape displays to work on the dash. anyone???

Keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for all your contribution. By the way, how did it run? Was it as responsive as you expected? How were the controls?

besides the display problem, it ran great. i had auto-frameskip on, and it ran at full speed with sound WITHOUT overclocking. controls are as expected for snes, keys are configurable, and multi button press is no problem.

There is a good step-by-step tutorial for setting up the emulators for the Dash located Here (http://forum.dashsmartzone.com/index.php?showtopic=53). It has a link as well to PicoDrive which is cool. I haven't tested all of them, but PocketNester seems to work well for me.

PocketNester won't display in full screen. It displays "tall" and scrunched, not "wide."

As far as SNES emulation is concerned, I recommend http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1257201 - I've spent quite a lot of time on Masterall's new, Smartphone-compliant SNES emu.

I do use pocketnester... but that's for NES, not SNES.
It won't let me select "Portrait", i tried that... the only display setting it will move to, is the one already selected Landscape Left? i think.

Yea, i got it to work... have to go into the settings, and set it for Portrait... you have to press the RIGHT button to change it to portrait, UP & DOWN doesn't change it... sound didn't work, and the left side of my screen was cut off.

Hmmnn! Well first post since i got my dash recently.
I got pocketsnes working with no problem. I'm running the new HTC_WWE_Brightpoint_US_1.33.422.1_4. 1.13.51_03.07.90 that was posted on another thread. Hope that helps. The sound is messed up though coz you hear a lot of static, but music is still recognizable. Oh and i overclock my dash to 252 mhz.
Off topic, anyone knows a free program to create shortcuts for the dash? Thanx.

Look all you have to do is READ!. Most importantly follow instructions and that is it. I've been playing Pocketnester, PocketSNES, NeoGeo, Cps1, and Cps2 roms for the last 4 month w/o any problems. Here is the site where you go download the latest PocketSnes 1.53 by masterall http://www.modaco.com/content/Smartphone-Software-Games/237589/PocketSNES-1-53/ Now you will need to get this file tgetfile.dll to load the roms or else the emulator is just gonna freeze and do nothing. Masterall also provided tgetfile.dll for download. If I can play Chrono trigger, Final Fantasy 2, Final Fantasy 3, and Secret of Mana then you should be able to do it too. I've not overclock my Excalibur and those game run like butter on our dash, without sound though. If you're still having problems read throughout the whole thread, because others might experience the same problem as yours. Anyways enjoy and have fun and most importantly NEVER GIVE UP!.
For best result update your dash to
NEW HTC ROM!! HTC_WWE_1.33.422.1_4.1.13.51_03.07.90_Ship.exe. This rom is amazingly fast. I've played PocketSNES w/ wm5 (official), wm6 (official), Rogers, and the NEW HTC ROM. The new rom makes this game feel a lot smoother maybe because it free up more resource.

It's impossible .. I've read the Modaco thread and I'm still having problems with PocketSnes.
I'm running the 1.33.422.1 ROM, fresh install and then I install the tgetfile.dll and run the PocketSNES 1-53 .. when I load the ROM the screen freeze.
PocketNesterPlus and PicoDrive runs smoothly .. why PocketSNES always freeze?
UPDATE: I found this version PocketSNES_QVGA_04_01_06.rar on

At one point I had the SNES emulator running extremely slow with no sound and with the sides cut off. I've determined that it just isn't worth it. I'll tackle SNES emulation in a year when I upgrade again. The dash can't handle it and no one has written adequate code.

Look I'm not trying to attack you. I'm trying to help you out. If my message seem a little offensive I'm sorry. Right now I don't have any cameras to take pix of my dash, unless there is a software or shortcut key that allow me to take screen shot of my phone, if so tell me how. For Portrait large and smooth stretch option go to option then Display. The option screen loads up when you load pocketsnes 1.53 (left hand side is file, right hand side is option). Anyways I dont know why your dash keep freezing up when u load roms. I already said this happen to me too in certain games. The emulator does not read any roms over 4mb. Tell me how to take screen shots of my dash w/o a camera then ill show u what my dash is capable of playing.

wow! i must be one of the lucky fews to get pocketsnes working?
like i said earlier, i'm running on the new 1.33 HTC rom, i dont think it'll make much of a diffrence. Make sure you app unlock ur dash, install the tgetfile.dll something, then run pocketsnes 1.53.
at 186 MHz clock, game will be slow if sound turned on. at 252MHz, everything should be playable. Some games wont load. either the copy is bad or incompatiable.
if you google for the required files, you'll find them. only two anyway.

I'm not sure why so many people are having problem with the emulator. I've made pocketsnes 1.53 work w/ 4 of my friends dash already. I've also made them work with 4 different version of wm6 roms such as, wm5, wm6, rogers wm6, New Bright HTC roms (currently using).
BTW I had a problem w/ one of my friends dash. I created an extra folder and when I try to load the roms I wasn't able to find any. Once I delete that extra folder the roms was found and playable.
-Application Unlock
-Create folder PocketSNES 1.53 in storage card
-Inside folder PocketSNES 1.53 , I create another folder and named it "Emulator".
-Inside the Emulator Folder I only put the PocketSNES.exe file
-All roms go inside PocketSNES 1.53 folder NOT the emulator folder
-Install tgetfile.dll
-Go to Emulator Folder and load up PocketSNES
-Configure Display modes and Keys in option.
-Files , load roms, and wallah it works.
All my roms are extracted they're not in zip files. Hope this help.

I got pocketSNES to work this morning with no problems at all. I've been playing FF6 (FF3) since. I simply gave up on SNES emulation back in August after trying to get it to work for 7 months. It seems Masterall updated the emulator back in October allowing it to work for widescreen smartphones.

Hey all, this may be old news, but after many, many, MANY hours of searching, I have finally found a GOOD emulator for WM smartphone, that ALSO WORKS on 6.1....and it is called SmartGear. It emulates NES, GameBoy and Gameboy Color, Super Nintendo, Genesis, and Master System...all in one tiny 1.5MB program! The downside, is that it costs 10USD to register, BUT it is free to try, although gameplay is limited to 2 minutes per rom:/// so if anyones got a keygen or somethin for this, PLEASE post it(ive already bought it, so its not needed for me personally, just for the community to have), but none the less, check it out at-http://www.bitbanksoftware.com/SmartGear.html
PS, did I mention that it emulates SNES and Genesis games AT FULL SPEED WITH SOUND?????!!!! Hmm, interesting eh? Oh but BTW, I DO reccommend that you do overclock your processor to 240MHZ for full speed sound. Enjoy!

I actually used this at one time, but even with the current one i can't get the sound to play properly with sega genesis games. it seems like the one of the two layers of sound are missing when i play it or other games. So i get background music but not the sound efx. And ive tried configure the settings every which way i could but with no luck... so i guess its back to pico drive for genesis and snes9x for my snes games and pocket nester for my nes games

nope, if you overclock your dash, excalibur whatever to at least 240MHZ, SmartGear will run Genesis and SNES games with sound, full screen, at 55-60FPS according to the built in FPS counter. IE that=full spead

Just kill all items running that you dont need (celetask manager - killing all unneeded proscesses/tasks frees up 26MB on my dash) use celetask to free up as much memory as possible run Pocketsnes from your main memory (not storage card). Editing the registry as follows below helped out tons for me:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\GDI\GLYPHCACHE\ (Change limit from 16384 to 32768)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\StorageManager\FATFS (Change CacheSize to 4096)

The "older" versions 0.5.4 and 0.7 only played NES, but the last Plus version also played SNES, it was a beta version 1.0b, I might still have it so I can upload it (it was freeware). I moved onto SmartGear cause it emulates GameBoy Color, NES, GameGear, MasterSystem, TurboGrafx-16, and Genesis (MegaDrive) and the developer is working on adding SNES.

Go back and click "NES ROM files"
Download 100s of games right there onto your phone!:D

When you open the program just right click under Options/controllers, and choose the buttons you want to use, Im using O and P for A and B on my dash those where the best ones to use!

By the way, not much digging is required. When you click the search button up top, the bottom text "Or use the built-in search..." is actually a link to a much better search than the default google one. Makes finding stuff around here easier.
PocketSNES is the only working SNES emulator I know of (but I've been known to be wrong before.) But to say it works is really giving it more credit than it deserves.
Smartgear is a multi-machine emulator that is supposed to have SNES support in its next release. It seems to work well for what it does (everything from gameboys to nes to sega hardware).

Before you jump, keep in mind that the gameboy-advance emulator part of smartgear isn't that great. I've only tried it a few times and it said both games were unrecognized files. I think a little more documentation would be nice from them, but $10, even for what it does well, isn't that bad.

I have noticed a slight increase of questions in regards to emulation on the Dash. This is a compilation of emulators that seem to run okay on the Dash. Credit goes to Parallax and Masterall @ Modaco for their work on the emulators. You will also need to get the "tget" cab installed in order to use some of these. Find it here: http://tillanosoft.com/ce/tgetfile.html These will emulate the following: SNES, NES, Gameboy Color, and Genesis. Enjoy! If anyone has some input have at it! :)

I believe you have to set the volume by the touchstrip before running the rom, or while you are in the menu of the emulator.

The two "picodrives" are two different versions of the Genesis emulators. And the Gameboy emulator only emulates gameboy and gameboy color, not advance - also it is not fullscreen. From what I know, I have not seen a fullscreen Gameboy emulator.

Smartgear is as close to fullscreen as you'll get on a smartphone. Gameboy screens were square. You either have to "letterbox" the left and right sides or stretch it to fit a rectangular screen.

The standard answer for ROM searches is: you can rip them from cartridges you own yourself. While having emulators is perfectly fine, having ROMs for carts you don't own is illegal in most of the world. Sharing them on this forum would put the site in legal jeopardy as well, so you're not gonna get very much good info here.
http://justfriggin(edited)googleit.com (http://justfuckinggoogleit.com/) is your best bet, as well as searching your favorite bittorrent site.

Does anyone one any issues with sound using smartgear when playing genesis games? When i play sonic the hedgehog, or any of the sonic games, it seems like it only re-produces 1 channel of audio. I re-produces the accompianment audio but not the main audio that has the music and the sound efx (such as the coin "bling" sounds). I'm using the latest version 1.0.4
and i've tried all kinds of sound options (ex: stereo on/off, bitrate 11-44khz, and 16-bit audio on/off). I've even tried extracting the .zip file and playing the file unzipped. This doesn't seem to be an issue when uing picodrive, but picodrive doesnt seem to run as smoothly as smartgear. (at least for genesis games)

hi
after countless hours of testing various snes emulators for windos mobile and seeing if any worked well with the excalibur ive finally found one.
you must have atleast 2 roms in the folder in which you put smartsnes.
keep frameskip to 2 for best results but please share your settings if you find better ones.
i used omap overclock to overclock to 216mhz i believe and then things went smoothly. but i didnt try it under 200mhz- maybe you could see which is the lowest you could have for best performance and battery consumption.
enjoy

The good thing about smartsnes V2 that I noticed is that it plays some games that pocketsnes 1.53 does not. For example super metroid, and terranigma seem to run so far on smartsnes - just with the funky screen. Despite that I can deal till somthing better comes along. Thanks for sharing spitfire!

From what I understand there is no working GBA emulator for the dash... I have tried several myself in the past but none of them worked. As far as Smartgear goes, I highly recommend it as it emulates quite a few systems and for GB or GBC emulation it is top notch (and fullscreen)! Version 114 seems better than the newest version for the GB/GBC emulator though as for some reason the new version crashes on some games where the old one did not.

PocketNesterplus is the only one I have gotten to work decently. Trying to play with these micro sized buttons started to piss me off so I gave up on the Idea of having one on my dash.
I had a DS laying around I hardly touched and decided to buy a CycloDS Evolution. Best $50 I ever spent. I have NES, SNES and Genesis emulators running great on that. And a few other emulators that are kind of glitchy.
