Quick feedback:

1. Voice mail icon doesn't work on my tmobile wing (open touch v4 black lite rom)

2. Call history is buggy - sometimes it can't scroll, and some of the lines are wider than others. However this is a very good and welcoming idea. Also could use smaller fonts for dates - the word "yesterday" is too big and won't fit in the screen.

3. Edit: just found out indeed I can scroll the right side of the screen, kinda like what is used in pocketcm. Good job!

All in all this is going to the right direction, just a few bugs. Definitely keeping up the good work!

You can touch on the right-hand side of the screen, and use that like a scroll bar. That even saves one click! I debated showing a light gray "ABCD..." down the side of the screen, but I like it better without it.

So there is no option to go directly to a letter? you can only scroll? I agree, that without the ability to be able to go directly to a letter, i just cant upgrade to this beautiful version. otherwise i would be scrolling forever to get to the bottom of my 250+ contacts. let us know if you decide to add it back in, or an option.

great work though otherwise

1. What registry entries do you have under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Vmail ? It's strange that it's not working... it looks for HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Vmail\PhoneNumber1, then HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Vmail\UserProvidedNumber1, then as a last resort looks up your own phone number.

2. It's working flawlessly for me... I'll see if I can get it to break. Can you post or send me the names & numbers of the entries that aren't being displayed properly? I can shrink the font too, just forgot about that.

3. You can use the (invisible) scroll-bar. I found this was easier than the using the popup keyboard.

So there is no option to go directly to a letter?

You can click half-way down the screen on the right side, to go 1/2 way through your contact list... to get all the way to the bottom, click the right-hand side of the screen, just above the icon bar. Just like the iPhone :)

ok ill give that a shot. if this is doable by finger/thumb, then that wont be that bad at all. the beauty of the 0.6 was it didnt require a stylus and was super fast to get a call made.

1. Under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Vmail I have two entries: PhoneNumber1 and PhoneNumber2, both empty. I guess this is the reason the voice mail icon isn't dialing anything because there is no number to dial...

2. The names are short names (less than 10 letters, such as xxxx xxx, or xxxxxx xxxx, or xxxx xxxx, sorry I can't post the detail), and the numbers are standard 10 digit numbers in US (1-###-###-####). The thing is some entries having the same name and number have different line width, and if I navigate away to contact then come back sometimes it displays totally normal.

3. Sorry I kinda jumped into conclusion before I mess with it more, now I found out the scroll-bar and it's very sweet! I have also changed my previous post.

One more thing, could you also make this change theme based on time (like being white during the day and dark during the night) and auto close when making phone call/text message? Kinda like what is presented here:

I would like to announce what I have been working on for the last month or so, since I found larna's open-source iContact... A NEW version of iContact! I've added the following features:

Added skin and color scheme support
Made app "full screen" with titlebar matching A_C's S2P and S2U2
Added call log
Added quick scroll-to support
Tied favorites to built-in categories
Added .cab installer for easy uninstall
Fixed icon to a proper transparent one

Source code is available at my site: http://supware.net/iContact

Everybody be sure to thank larna. Thanks A_C, for help with the registry.

This is a very nice app. and it runs smooth on my t-mobile shadow smartphone. but since its not a touch screen i am limited to the contact list and pressing the left dpad button to get out of the contacts info.

Is there anyway to program the keys.

dpad up works, moves up the list
dpad down works, moves down the list
the center button in the middle of my scroll wheel already acts as a finger press so thats fine but

left dpad to move the bottom menu to the left (Recents, Favorites)
Right dpad to move the bottom menu to the right (keypad, voicemail)
right softkey(#2) to open any menu that you may have in the program
left softkey(#1) to open any menu you have in the program

also my phone has a back button. when in your program it doesnt funcion at all.
also my home button does not function at all.

like i said this is a smartphone i installed this on, and if this was changed it would work on all phones running wm

killi

ok i tested it. it is not very user friendly for finger thumb quick dialing. Even if you widen the scroll bar part, after you touch a scroll area, it almost always opens up a contact in that new letter area before you get to look for your target. but as it is, the scroll bar hidden area is only reachable consistently by stylus. great app for stylus driven contact searches if you fix somehow the autoselect after scroll bar tap. ill have to stick with 0.6 (using the night/day 0.6 by uiskibum)

i really like the icons and screen selections though. keep up the good work.

Can u give some info on how to change the color scheme?
thanks

You'll want to modify theme.ini. Hopefully the names can explain themselves well enough... the color values are in rgb hex, like for web pages. For instance:

ListBackground=182633

This specifies that the background color for the list is Red=18, Green=26, Blue=33, (it looks like a dark blue). Here's a page that has a bunch of examples: http://www.pitt.edu/~nisg/cis/web/cgi/rgb.html

i have some suggestions.
1. as ppl mentioned, a exit button would be fine.
2. abc button have it adv, becoz scroll on right hand size is not user friendly as abc. actually, is it possible to develop for user to select it in option menu?
3. again, i think the SIM card number is a issue. Any method to make it appear in contact list?
4. for keypad, is it I click the icon, a phone keypad will pop out for my usage.

I find there is many softward like iContact, e.g. FunContact and PocketCM. I think it can be used for reference.

Now, my two requests:
1. More important - the scrollbar on the right side should be much wider... take the phone in your left hand and try to use it with your left thumb. See?

2. Less important, but still... - I like to have photos in my contacts. If not in the main list, then on the contacts page - at least.

Keep up a good work!

For me too. My suggestion is to replace VoiceMail button with ABC selection and make scrollbar optional.
I don't think that VoiceMail is required for Contacts application. Close button would also be good.

Moreover ABC scrollbar is very buggy for me: very often when I release my finger after scrolling a contact (under my finger) is selected automatically.

P.S. BTW, thanks author for your work on a new version.

Glad to see this program resurected.

I have used most of all the other ver. without fail, but this new version won't run. When invoked it just blanks the screen and then goes back to the today screen and does nothing. I checked the task manager and its not even running. Any ideas on this??? I really love this program and want to use it. I have a HTC Touch running WM 6.0

Thanks for reviving iContact, it's my favorite.
I will be, for the moment, reverting to 0.6 for the same reasons most of the other users expressed-navigation. When you have hundreds of contacts scrolling isn't an option. The ABC grid was the perfect (for me) balance between simple scrolling (useless) and smart search like in FFF(too complicated).
I secont the request to replace the voicemail button with the ABC and, if possible, use left/right dpad for page switching.

The biggest thing I use to love about this app is it was very lite and easy to get to a contact and call them fast..

Without having the ABC option just makes it that much harder and takes away the best thing about this app..Just my opinion but when you have a shit load of contacts to be able to hit the ABC button and just jump to where you need is freakin fast and awesome..

Without it I have to waste too much time scrolling up and down trying to get to the right contact etc..

Excellent work though but it seems to be going in the bloated pocketcm direction so I'll have to stick to version 6.

Awesome app, 2 questions:

i'm on a sprint Mogul, running no2chem's latest build, when i click on the email address it takes me to the screen where i chose which email address to send with (i have 2, work/personal) but when I click on either it just takes me to the inbox instead of new message.

If i can fix the first issue, how do i make this the default contact application, so that i can access it from within the dialer by pressing 'contacts' or from the today screen by pressing 'contacts' on the bottom right of the screen?

I agree the ABC button was what made icontact different and I like that.

Issues:
On my Touch XL, when I use the right side to scroll to a letter and let go, it selects the contact that my finger was on. Meaning I just want to go to the "N"s but it will open a "M" contact because that was where I let go. Not like the iPhone, PocketCM or even Random Access.

When using the right side scroll, after you let go and it selects a contact, the big letter stays in the middle of the screen.

I have one contact that will not remove itself from the Favorites. I figured out the + and - to add or remove from favs, but this one contact stays in favs even with the - in the contact.

For closing or minimize, I would suggest pressing the battery icon to close the app and pressing the end key to minimize. This would be consistent with most other WM apps.

I REALLY like the look beter than V6 and the ability to customize. Nice job adapting from the orriginal. Maybe a V.7.2 of your work would be perfect. :)

Great work on the app! Love the "snappy feel" of it now.

The downside for me is the removal of the ABC Grid, imo that was one of the best parts of the app.
Also using the "scroll" get kind of bugging especially when scrolling the letters from z to a (bottom up). It/I always seems to mis-click on contacts.

+1 to Bring The Grid Back!

Couple of things!

I've noticed the language part of the "theme.ini", but would it be possible to add something for the "Add New Contact" for localisation?

Also, any chance of AppToDate support? I will happily help on that front, but since this appears like it's actively going to be developed, it would be a great way to roll out updates!

http://www.modaco.com/content/apptodate/267098/developers-how-to-include-apptodate-support-basic/

Anyway, thanks for updating this app! :D

I'm loving the letter of the block of names being shown at the top of the page!

EDIT: Is there anyway of changing the size of the text under the recent calls tab? When it pops up with "Yesterday" it's far to big for the screen! Also more on the development side, (not sure about C++ at all) would it be possible to include a dialpad purely for this program? Perhaps change what it's linked to to my own, dialer (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2230491&postcount=1) to suit the finger friendly ness of this app?

EDIT2:
In this, the names are cut off at the end, when there is more space towards the left... Is this editable?
http://i245.photobucket.com/albums/gg59/l3v5y/iContact.jpg

Edit3:
In landscape mode, the text is cut off at the same point, and (unlike the top bar) the bottom bar of buttons is not drawn to fit the width...

+2 that is what I wanted to say :D

- ABC selection icon to replace voicemail (I can access voicemail on the dialpad by holding 1).
- Keep the ABC scrollbar but fix the time limit (or whatever) it takes to click on a contact as it opens one when I release. It is very buggy.
- Give an integrated menu option to change the background to a user selected picture (see current ThumbCal for this).
- Not only does it need a method to close (tap top right to close, or a menu option to exit). But it also needs a way to automatically close after making a call or clicking on SMS to send a text. There is no reason to have it remain open after.
- Show contact pictures.

Thanks again to the developer for continuing this great software.

I would like to announce what I have been working on for the last month or so, since I found larna's open-source iContact... A NEW version of iContact! I've added the following features:

Although its a nice release, has alot of eye candy, it is not "iContact" you have gone a separate path from the original author. You should have renamed it, technically its not "iContact 0.7" since you didn't actually Develop the other versions, you started a variation.

As you may have noticed in some of the previous posts people are addressing feature issues like you originally created them, then removed them (i.e. sorting/browsing keyboard).

Also by naming it "iContact 0.7", you have basicly taken the project form "larna" so that he would have to rename his next version so as to keep it from being confussed with yours.

Larna was nice to make his sorce code available, but I doubt he excpected to have his project taken from him like this.

Just my thoughts on this.

excellent update!
my congratulations...

is there any chance to have some contacts photo? or it would make more heavy the program?

the only think i dont like very much is the quality of the lower 4 buttons. i believe that you have shrink them very much in order to lower the kb size.

Someone please send me better icons! I'm not an artist. I will gladly replace what's there, as long as it matches the "HTC Style" theme.

1. The email account setting is in settings.ini, and it's case sensitive.
2. The .cab installer should have made the program the default contacts program. It's just a couple registry settings.

Hmm, not sure how the coding works for this program. Would something like this work:
^ = Today
< = Previous day
> = Next day

So instead of having what you have for "today," "yesterday," "wednesday" etc... We could just click on the arrow that I am suggesting to go to the corresponding day, etc... The < = Previous could tap on and would go from today, to "wednesday," next tap to "Tuesday," etc...

EDIT: also, aren't the horizontal +---+---+---+---+ separator lines missing from the day portion like the abc... has?

I would love to theme it only I also would love to have the ABC back otherwise it aint no use to me.

I sure would love for you to apply a diamond theme to this app. With the excellent job you have done with the Minimal Dialer and Throttle Launcher, I know you could do something awesome for this app as well. I hope to see it soon. :) Also if you could look at doing some sort of diamond theme with ThumbCal as well would be great.

uhm selecting ABC is way faster to find a contact. you must only have like 20 contacts that you didn't seem a need to include ABC selection menu. who wants to scroll thru 300 contacts?

there is plenty of space on the right side to add a ABC menu, i don't see why you would need a scroll bar anyway, thats what touch flow is for.

and maybe you should put the default tel phone number below their name and make the name font smaller, it will still be finger friendly..

if you aren't interested in any of this then maybe give the user some options in a menu..

just some suggestions and take them with a grain of salt!

but i'll stick with the other versions of contacts for now.

Tried the 0.7 - the first iContact experience for me and yes - ABC grid or ABC.. on the right side is really missed. For now I returned to HTC Random Access.

Hi people,
Doug asked permission to use the name iContact in his release and i allowed him of course. I won't be releasing new versions anymore as i don't have ppc device anymore (i'm using iphone now).

As from screenshots, i think iContact looks better than ever (great work Doug) and i'm sure Doug will reimplement "ABC grid" feature, couse there are so many requests for that.

I would actually suggest setting up a SVN repository on ProjectLocker so more people could contribute to it.

- Not only does it need a method to close (tap top right to close, or a menu option to exit). But it also needs a way to automatically close after making a call or clicking on SMS to send a text. There is no reason to have it remain open after.

I agree that it needs a button to exit the app but not automatically close it. What if you want to send another sms to a different person? Maybe an option perhaps whether you want to have the app automatically close after a call or sms.

- Show contact pictures.

I agree 100%

+1

I'm back to 0.6 for ABC pad, add contacts and option favorites.
It would be better with the option "tap on unused space to go back" because it's easy when you're in free hands in your car to navigate in the menus.

Hope god will hear us. Nice work on design of version 0.7, keep efforts, it's marvelous.

nir36
30th May 2008, 12:38 PM
the scrolling and kinetic response of 0.7 is better than 0.6. also, the response to a click.. is much smoother. when you clicked a contact in 0.6 it would have had to be a percise click or it would just center the list.. now when you click anywhere on the contact it would open the screen. thats a VERY VERY important upgrade due to comfortability issues.

again i implore you, besides than adding the ABC grid, to add the options to close iContact after placing a call, and having an option to change the theme according to the time of day. those 2 options might just be the reasons, for me, to switch from 0.6 to 0.7 indefinately.

thank you. GREAT work.

Glad to hear the ABC button will return! Love much of what you've done with the app and really like that you use built in categories to define favorites. That said there is a problem that if you add a contact as a favorite it will remove any other categories that the contact may be in. Favorite selection should not affect other categories.

Also on my wishlist:
Close after dial option
Show regular top and bottom bar (non full screen)
Filter by category

Thanks for all of your efforts!

You'll want to modify theme.ini. Hopefully the names can explain themselves well enough... the color values are in rgb hex, like for web pages. For instance:

ListBackground=182633

This specifies that the background color for the list is Red=18, Green=26, Blue=33, (it looks like a dark blue). Here's a page that has a bunch of examples: http://www.pitt.edu/~nisg/cis/web/cgi/rgb.html

great work, and good to hear the ABC button is goin to return.

Though there are two things Iīd really appreciate:

1. Contact Pic Support in Detail mode, maybe an option to turn this on/off, there are definitely people who donīt want such a feature.

2. When I click a contact and I want to close it, I barely reach the return button as quickly as Iīd like to.

I suggest to switch the position of the return and "mark favorite" button. so I can close it much more easily. On the other hand, lefties may hate this...but I think there is a need for improvement and maybe someone here has a better solution.

So a couple of bugs...

1) when the list "scrolls" after I let go... I can't stop the "auto" scroll by tapping the screen (it just opens up the contact that I tapped)... it should stop the movement when I tap the screen

2) when I email someone, it appends "EMAIL" to the end of a contact's email in Outlook... for example xxx@xxxx.com comes up as xxx@xxxx.comEMAIL

Can't wait for the fixes... .6 until then.

Hi Thanks for the response. I have tried that but there is no Delete Contact. I have right softkey that says menu and in the menu options there is no Delete. I can clear cancel, but if I remove the name then it's filed under unamed.

Also just found another issue as well. It appears that icontact doesn't bring up all the phones number associated with a contact. ex, work2 or company telephone doesn't show up after selecting a contact. you have to select it again to get all the choices. it would be nice to have all the numbers on the first screen.

It would be nice too, to have it display the time in 12 hour clock rather then military time and the date to read m/d/y instead of y/m/d

Well I've been hard at work the past few days, and am proud to announce a new version - 0.71. I've tried to address most of your comments. A couple notes:

If you've modified theme.ini or settings.ini, make sure to do a backup before installing the new version. It will overwrite your existing ones. I don't know how to fix this, sorry...
Clicking anywhere in the titlebar will minimize the program. Or if you enabled it in settings.ini, it will exit the program. w00t!
The reason why iContact no longer supports WM2003SE is because of the cool new graphics effects (the transparency and stretching). I could probably make psuedo-transparency, like Larna did for the old keyboard in 0.6, but I don't know how to support both versions with the same code base. I'll try to figure it out. If anyone knows, please let me know!
For those of you for whom the program just crashes, I don't know how to debug that... it's most likely an easy bug fix but I don't know how to enable debug logs or whatnot. If anyone knows this, please let me know too! If you could run the source code from VS2008 on your device, it will tell you why your program is crashing and at what line. So I'd be able to fix that. Otherwise, for me, it's just a shot in the dark.

Here's my todo list for 0.71++. It probably won't come as fast as 0.71 did... 3 days was some hard work!

More support for other devices (landscape, WM2003SE, keyboard).

It would be relatively simple to add "TitlebarText" and "TitlebarSignal" to theme.ini. Next release.

Great job on the new updates, and you did them so fast! props to you!

Do you know if this is a known issue or is being looked at at sometime.

I noticed that when selecting a contact if that contact has phone numbers in work2 or company telephone fields they do not show up after selecting the contact. You have to actually select the name of the contact again to bring upu the original contact list to see all the numbers.

Thanks again for a great program!

So nice... Definitely a keeper. A few suggestions though:

1. The ABC grid is much slower compared to what is in 0.6 version, also the display is different. In 0.6 the letters that do not present in my contacts will not show up; this one has full 26 letters. Is there a future performance optimization for this?

2. The "invisible" scroll bar for history is gone :( Besides, it is possible to group the history with names (like pocketcm and pointui does), and when I select the person who maybe called me 26 times then there is a list of those 26 calls placed with time and duration. My call history is fill with calls from my wife (she's in a different city) so it's hard for me to find another number I called/received. This is where pointui call history really shines, because pocketcm call history won't allow direct call back.

All in all, great app. Will be looking forward for the next better one. Thank you for your hard work!

Yeah, the setting is in settings.ini: change ExitOnMinimize=1

Then clicking on the titlebar anywhere closes the app instead of minimizing it.

ExitOnAction=1 will make iContact exit any time you perform an action, such as dialing a number or sending SMS, etc.

#1a. I'm working on making it faster.

#1b. It always contains all 26 letters: If I get used to the location of a letter on that grid, I will be able to click it without even reading the grid... I know that "G" for instance will always be at position 2,2. Otherwise it takes longer for my brain to figure out where "G" is on that grid, could be in the first row, could be in the 2nd. Since speed is what the keyboard was designed for, this is better than the old method of v0.6.

#2a. Whoops, I didn't mean to get rid of that. I updated how the scroll bar works for the contact list (giving all letters of the alphabet an equal portion of the scroll bar), which stopped it from working for the other two screens. I'll bring it back in 0.71++.

#2b. I don't know about "threaded" call history. I think it would be a major update to how the list data is stored. It does seem a lot more user friendly though. I have the same situation with my wife and voicemail taking up the majority of list entries. I'll think on it.

Hei,

thanks or new version, works great, but what i miss is the fast shortway to select direktly letter. Ok, that feature is implemented, but it works very very slow. It is not useable for me at my Herald. I hope you can speed up the short letter selection and upgrade it to letters like ÜÄÖ like Larnas iContact :) So long i use the older version.
Hm, but what i find really nice is the marc a contact as favorite, it is eassyer as iContact :D.
What you should set to your ToDo: ;)
-suppourt for other alphabets like german öäü or hebrew letters or russian letters or ...
-speed up the ABC keyboard

cheers :D

Hi,

much better with ABC now, thanks.

Thereīs a little bug: when I click on the call history icon, the app exits...(btw I use a O2 Orbit2 / HTX Touch Cruise)

Another thing I really donīt like is the way I can close the app. The title bar is even smaller than the WM taskbar and I really canīt manage to close the app by hitting the title bar. I thought about some solutions for this. Either theres a close button in the bottom-bar or you make the title-bar bigger and probably add an exit-button.

On the other hand: iContact just needs about 1MB of RAM..

Martin

Well done.

Some Ideas for the next release:
- The Keyboard is to slow. Speedoption in the ini-file?
- A Highlightcolor for the Keys (of the Keyboard).

And if you change the System-Font-Size the Call-History is cuted on the Top.

Couple of weird things...

At one point, if I tapped on a name, and selected the detailed info, it would give me info for the name two above the one I had seleceted! No idea why, and it seems to have stopped now ...

With the ABC implementation, in the original, it only showed letters that had contacts with them, and I think it got the letters from the contact names (hence support for other non Latin characters), in this version however, I get a letter for each in the Latin alphabet, and so have "Z" for which I have no contacts.

Artemis with Artemis Touch 4.01 WWE 6.1 ROM
HTC 3470 with original WM 6 ROM (6.1 ROM is not available yet...:p)
HTC Touch Cruise with Bepe 0.66 WM6.1 ROM

Nice application Supbro

But..

Finger scrolling is a little bit slower & the ABC keyboard does not support Unicode characters as it did on Larna's 0.6.. that version supported Arabic characters and it was really fast...

Also the great thing about the ABC on Larna's, that it shows only the characters of the saved contacts!!

can you fix those in 0.72 ???

Hopefully :o

I'm agree with that. Another hint from me is to put the translations in a separate file (language.ini) to separate the terms from the color definations. For me as a skinner it would be much easier to create skins.

iContact is the best app I ever tried, and I have already tried many of them, the biggest plus is speed, it's so fast!!! but I found one "bug" which is annoying me..
.
when I want to call and I select number and confirm it using the HW buttons, it starts dialing and also messaging...But in case when I tap the screen it its OK.
It looks the HW button when pressed starts both, dial and messaging..
Does anybody have the same issue, or any solutions?

Super app ! But it is a really shame that i can't see my sim contacts.. Why is that? It makes it unusable for me..I think this has already been covered, but, the reason is that iContact interacts with poutlook directly. poutlook will not allow access to SIM contacts, so to get those requires quite a lot of extra code, and I don't think it's currently easy to implement, or that supbro has the inclination to set it up.

Hello supbro,

Thanks for this good app, but can you add an option for show windows takbar bar or not. With this the skin can match with iphone style or with wmobile style.

Thanks for your work !!!!

I asked the same thing in the iC v0.6 thread:

Could someone add a Grouping feature?

The idea is to be able to add your contacts to groups (pre-defined or custom made), not just in the favorites.
There could be a semi-transparent button on the bottom-left (similar to the one on the bottom-right for the letter shortcuts), which brings up the list of groups.

I don't know if this is too complicated, but it'd be nice, I think..

Nice one the 0.71 version. Quick question, as you are now overwriting the default contacts application, on iContact how can we edit a contact details?

edited: forget this one, found it

But, as said above, when adding a contact to favorites, you should NEVER replace the categories a contact was before, just add (or remove) favorites whitout touching the other categories.

Some more comments:

1. When creating the links, instead of using %CE17%\Programs, use %CE11%. You are hard-coding for English. Mine, for instance, is called Programas. CE11 will deal with language differences.

2. Same problem, different area. Your favorites icon is coded for English only, mine is called Favoritos. Add a new entry on the theme.ini so we can deal with this.

Thanks and nice work.

The new version works great, but i have one prolem. The exit button isn't really a exit button. The program will be active on background. Can this be fixed.

(I really wish people would read/search before asking the same questions over and over.)

I used a search option and couldn't find an answer for this: Is there any way to have this app open when I press on the history button on my dialer instead of the original history screen? Thanks in advance.

That would be nice, anyone know if this is possible as a registry setting maybe?

Hi Ovidio,

I have the same problem, What I did was, I did not uninstall 0.71 just let it stay in the folder, extract your icontact v.6 contents into program files/icontact and overwrite v0.71 and You'll be able to use v.60 while we wait for the next release that will work for us.

Good luck

here is my small changes to iContact v0.71

changed:
ABC-search and sidebar-search now should be localized. at least for russian it's works.

to developer:
i attached changed and new source files, if you wanna add my changes to you project.

known bugs:
in ABC-search only first 30 letters is showed, if several alphabets is used.

attached:
icontact.zip - only rebuilded executable (overwrite original one)
icontact.cab - new CAB
src_changed.zip - changed and new source files from original program!

thanks to all for great program and to share src!
