I have X7501 without the camera in the front. The device already unlock and phone is fine.

If I want to put AP4 rom in, do I need to unlock the device or just start doing the ROM upgrade. Is the AP4 rom better than original ROM?

A x7501 without cam? Never seen....

But to your question:
Normaly you need unlock your device. Its not the SIm-Lock what you need to unlock, its the SPL. So unlock it first and upgrade then.

The X7501 born without front cam, it isn't a congenital disease :)

Last part of the question AP4? AP4 is a good but slow rom, also AP3 is better than standard HTC ROM, faster and stable.

AP4 is an evolution with some problems, slower than AP3, and you need to change your ATHENA "partition table" to have it working. AP5 is quickly growing

Until now changing ATHENA partition table is a "non return choice", if you don't like it you can only flash AP3 or IRUS ROM for the newly partitioned ATHENA (SPL 3.5) Cmonex is working at the tool to "revert" the partition to the original one

I will suggest to wait for AP5, if you have time take a tour with AP3, (old SPL) or IRUS WM6.1. If you don't like you can revert to your original one!

I second this.

Makes perfect sense.
So, first unlock to spl1.2.

Then try out AP3, irus' many versions of ROMS.By then, irus version 2 and ap5 vanilla on spl1.2 may have been released. If you still don't like them better, you can always go back to the stock ROM.

I haven't had any performance issues on AP4, so your mileage may vary.
