That worked for me. I am now able to create a .dat from .zip. I am repackaging using WinRAR which seems to be corrupting the .dat because SPB crashes after I modify and repackage. Anyone else having this problem? The tutorial refers to having to select the .zip radio button after entering the password to re encrypt the modified files, but winrar just repackages without prompting for a password, creating a .rar. I may just download WinZIP and it that way.

It happened to me a lot of times, that´s why ended up switching to WinZip

Bro, its part of the background. You have to unzipped qp_bkg_now.dat and edit separator.bmp and separator2.bmp. :)

Would like to revisit editing the xml files and recrypting them using something other than WinZip. I used 7-Zip as follows to change the location name (ie: Leon, ...) in Lockscreen.xml:

1. Extract Lockscreen.xml from the qa_layout.zip archive. Delete the file inside the archive because you will be updating the archive after you make the changes.

2. Modify the location name in Lockscreen.xml using notepad. Save the change and exit notepad.

3. Right-click Lockscreen.xml:

Selected 7-Zip/add to archive. This will open an extensive archive window that includes encryption options.

Archive: browse and select qa_layout.zip
Update mode: select Update and add files
Enter password: (use the archive password)
Encryption method: ZipCrypto

4. Enter OK.

You can open the archive with 7-Zip and will see Lockscreen.xml back in place with the correct encryption.

This should help people that do not have WinZip and don't want to spend $30US to change the location name.

I have the same problem. Cannot sync. Using ActiveSync 4.5. SPB Mobile Shell 2.1. Configuration: Classic, Analog, Show current and upcoming appointments.

The symptom that I experienced was that after a soft reset (not connected to my PC), and while applications were loading, my device tried to open the ActivSyc window. Normally the device would just open into the Today view. I had to touch the screen to get the ActiveSync window to fully open. I closed the window, which should stop ActiveSync, and the Today screen was normal. I shifted to the Now screen and your WM2.1 dat screens all looked OK. I shifted between screens and everything seemed to work.

My next step was to connect my device to my PC. The sync started and a connection was made. However, I never got past "sychronizing". I let it run for a while then shifted themes. Did another soft-reset and everything worked fine.

I suspect that one of the xml files (and there are a lot of them) is making an internal call for data. It could be for contacts, tasks, or appointments. Somehow this call is not to the internal mobile outlook database, but to the synchronized outlook database. This is why to ActiveSync window tries to open on startup after the soft reset. This is just a theory. Maybe someone out there has an alternate theory.

If other people are having this problem, a report of any unusual symptoms would help the troubleshooting.

You´re right, it must be a call for data (most likely for appointments or alarms since in the Classic I´m using 2 different Lsp´s for Calendar),however it can´t invoke data from other sources than the MShell was designed for (it would be nice if we could!!). I wish I had this problem myself, so I could try turning on and off one of those calendars and see if this is the root cause, perhapsyou would like to try.... ? Let me know I can tell you how.

Incase any of you have noticed, there's a blue border on the left and right side of the calender icon. Have replaced it with new icon upload by luiggi. Thanks to him for pointing it out and the calender icon. :)

I haven´t benchmarked this particular skin with the original one nor any other moded skin, what I can tell you is that at least for the Classic now screen there are only 2 items which haven´t been modified: "Date" and "Weather"; everything else has been changed, such as: There are 2 clocks, 2 Calendars, 2 Signal meters, 2 Status indicators, the analog clock is not the transparent original clock, the background is not a couple of tiny 2pxl height lines but a full screen 240x320 pxl in color (not black nor transparent), the battery indicator is at least 10 times bigger than the original one, and the Profile function is an addition too. If you add to all this that I´m not a PPC programming expert, then is very likely that your phone memory and battery will pay the price; but no worries,as in everything in this life we all have choices and fortunely there´s plenty of theme options and even other softwares here in xda-developers (BTW welcome!) and in a couple of other forums out there in the web.

Of course it´s available for the Pro, unless the theme you are using somehow is preventing it. If you want to put a limit play with BoundRect Height value for "Calendar"

I only want to change the arrow that you see when opening "Programs" for example. I think, the gray look of this arrow is not corresponding with the rest of the colors used in this theme.

In the professional portrait screen the 3 buttons for sms/email/missed calls are very close together and are hard to separate when pressing with the finger (see screenshot 02).
But there's enough room to give more space between the buttons (see screenshot 01). As you can see I found a layout.dat which is fixing this but is having other problems, so I need to edit yours).
Only I can't find where this has to be edited in the xml file and in which xml file.

Can you give me a hint?

This is the script for profiles for Pro Landscape of the WM7 v1.1, just play with the BoundRect X coordinate of your favorite theme , the higher the value will give you wider separation between the 3 icons

Thanks for your comments radem205. We are in the same page, what you point about the arrows has been kind of annoying for me too. I´ve tried (not too hard) to change it so far with no success, if you notice the original Spb icons and arrows they look the same when aren´t active.

EDIT: I made a couple of tests and no matter what the gray color remains while the item is not under the "cursor", however if the cursor is on the item this will show the actual color of the image, I don´t like the fact that removing the gray layer the icon edges would be revealed, this is not good look for me, so I leave it as is for now and perhaps for next release we can have it in other color.

Installation instructions are in the release notes (post #1), it won´t take more than a couple of minutes to read it. I recommend you to upgrade to MS 2.1 it shouldn´t cost you a dime using your MS 2.0 key.

First thanks to Luiggi for your help in this, bro. I seldom used the professional look, so I didnt think to check the page when I mod. (Silly me) Well, lesson learn. You'll noticed that I edit all layout (analog/pro) when I mod WM7 Manila. As for the colour status, my photoshop skill is next to zero. But will give it a try from your upload. Perhaps Luiggi can help? :)

Hi, this is the best I can do. Seems that when I use colour, it won't show. But I have done a white border so that it turn white when missed call or sms. See screenshot.

yes, I also think that as soon as one is adding color it does not work any more, tried saving as 8/16 bit with many options, no avail.

But using colors is possible as some other status bmps are showing, for example this one:

This example shows that highlighting or coloring makes new messages much more striking I think.

Maybe someone has got the answer to this color problem?

I looked at your files, my comments: In the mask files *_m.bmp the light pixels or more properly said the white pixels will let see thru the corresponding pixels in the matching *.bmp file, in other words, color in the mask file doesn´t do anything (in fact it can´t be other colored since is a black&white image indexed). Try to add the color in the *.bmp file, see the attached file as an example to add color to the signal bars.

Use original WM7 v1.1 qa_layouts.dat or look for the following script in every affected screen.

You have the option to reduce the space between icons reducing the "Spacing" value to a lower number than the shown 5 or you can turn it off changing the "ShowConnectionStatus" value from 1 to 0.

To tell the thruth I can´t imagaging why this could happen, I have an Hermes too and I use it all the time in the Clasic Mode and I haven´t experience this problem. There´s another 2 or 3 user who already report a similar problem (they weren´t able to answer calls) when they did it I search Spb forum and looks like there´s a bug in MS comming and going randomly apparently associated with alarms / notifications, however I can´t assure that the WM7 Skin is a bug free modification and isn´t contributing under certain conditions and interaction possible with other applications to worse the situation.

Since the main difference between the Pro & Classic modes is the alarm line in the Classic I prepared and included a link in post #1 to revised qa_layouts.dat with changes to dissable all alarm related scripts as a test for those who are experiencing similar issues, your input and support will be highly appreciated

Yes, this is true, but the original problem was something else:
I used the kangmas skin as draft which has b/w icons. Here the icons are really placed in the Status_m.bmp file instead of the Status.bmp and vice versa. You can see this if you're looking at the kangmas works:

Apparently exchanging the two file contents makes it easier to get the "shine through effect", right, kangmas?

But this is only working with b/w icons since the *_m.bmp may not be a color bitmap as I found out.
So trying to add color to the *_m.bmp will always result in the icons not being displayed at all.
Simply exchanging the file names back to standard solves the problem, but then the "shine through effect" is not there any more.

But that is not a problem, one just has to adapt the icon colors respectively.

All in all the rule is as follows:
- Status.bmp must be 16 bit color and "r5 g6 b5" mode
- Status_m.bmp must be 8 bit greyscale
Maybe other combinations will also work, but this is what is definitely solving the problem for me.

Attached I've added some of the bitmaps I've modified.
New messages are now much better to identify in my opinion.

Maybe this will help others who run into the same problem :)

Thanks, yes I know you didn´t mention the call problem but the alarm / notification interaction might be manifested in different ways depending of applications installed, rom, etc. Please give it a try and see if the Activesync behavior changes.

Looks like we have a winner, I wish I could get more feedback to confirm that the alarm function is what´s causing the trouble (I wonder why Spb didn´t include it in their release.....) in the mean time is just a matter the users to decide wether or not keep Alarms in the Classic mode, I would recommend to get rid of it using the new layout until find an alternative to avoid the sync inconveniences and hopefully the calls issue too.

I love this theme. It`s great, but I have a problem in classic mode. I cannot get the analog clock working with v1.1. I tried everything but I cannot see the analog clock or weather and time. When I copy the mod by kangmas it works, but than another problem accurs. No buttons work except for the start and contact buttons. A workaround is to switch to professional mode and than back to classic mode. But it is annoying to do this after every soft reset. I have read all the thread but cannot find anything on this. Please read the release notes buddy, pay attention to the proper alarm appointments and calendar settings and also to overcome the conditions when you switch from Pro to classic and also what happens when you are in Classic digital and make a soft reset or you power off your phone.

It´s in qp_calendar.dat, note the offset to get the proper alignment with the alarm text

( Except to borrow ideas to best improve this theme). Miss the days when robodad, gfreek, Dredd67, kulet78 and others will come out with diverse ideas and unique themes. Just wish .. :(

Thanks kangmas, and yes I missed those days too, after all that was the way how I learned to tweak MS. But I still believe in collaboration work and that´s why I visit frequently the "how to" thread and I provide input whenever is of my knowledge. I allways referred as "we / our" theme and not to mine; I reafirm what is written in post #1: I declined the credits for this theme because I didn´t create anything, all what I did it was to put it together with a different appeareance. And I believe in such way in the collaboration work that soon a genuine collaboration theme will be released.
Well, in the mean time, let´s enjoy moding and changing our phones to our liking and needs! :)

I like these icons, but I have two suggestions/questions:

1. When using them in "professional" mode, the top edge of the "missed calls" icon is showing a line from the bottom of the "text message" icon. Can you please fix that?

2. When there is new mail, the number to the right changes appropriately, but another number appears within the icon, but is visible due to the transparency. Is there a way to fix that?

suggestion for a new version : add a second weather page like this one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2348505&postcount=3167 I guess that the whole screen weather icon and description is a very nice looking page (Honestly I really like it!), the approach with the current version of WM7 was to maintain a distinctive touch to the pages and this one is well known from where is comming from (nothing against that); on the other hand in my very personal opinion having a built in weather page and add another with same (actually leess) info it becomes a burden for the phone memory. What I can anticipate is that the weather page in the next version will be totally revamped with a distinctive look. If after all this you still want the suggested screen I´m sure that somebody like kangmas will more than willing to work on that and provide the tweak for those interested as he did for the V1 of this theme (see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...80#post2280880 )

There´s no way (at least I don´t know how) you can have the counter only at the right of the icon using transparent icons (unless the count be zero), your option (at least with this theme) is to have the counter bellow the icon.

Is not complicated at all, take a look to the work that kangmas made for the v1, note that he has 3 contact pages these pages are defined in the qa_layouts.dat in the "Spedial.xml´s" : There are 3 of them, almost identical except that each one of them plots different contacts variables in the screen depending of the page. Also in the same qa_layouts.dat look at the Main.xml, he defines additional tabs for each new page, and each of these tabs has the corresponding reference to the "Speedial" page mentioned before. Take a look to those and you´ll figure out how it works. I wish I could have time to explain it in more detail, but I´m busy right now working in our new version.

I´m not sure if MS Paint would work for Spb MS given that requires that main images be saved as a 16bit depth and R5G6B5, what I use is PhotoShop and I would dare to say that nobody has been able to use MS Paint. Plaese take a look to my 9 icon build guide in the "Begginers How To" thread

I originally tried using Paint Shop Pro, but it wouldn't open the files. Trust me, I knew MS Paint was a last resort, but it was the only program that would open and display the bitmap. On the more advanced software, I was getting an error when trying to open it. Nevertheless, I appreciate your comments and your help!

I'm not getting anything like the screenshots in the 1st post.
I'm running SPB Mobile 2.1 on an Athena (default to landscape QVA (not sure the dimensions)).

MobileShell is installed on the device '\Program Files\Spb Mobile Shell'

To install the skin I simply extracted the contents from the zip in the first post (from rapidshare), then updated the qa_layouts with the one from the first post.
Next a soft reset to activate the changes.

When the device restarts I go to the 'Now' screen and although the layout is different I'm not getting any of the new icons, attempting to scroll by sliding a finger causes the application to crash.

Has anyone else tried this and seen similar? Any work arounds/things I've not done?
I love the look of this theme, just wish I could get it to work.

I´m sorry your divice has a nice 5 inch 480x640 resolution screen in this theme doesn´t have support for it, besides according to this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406032 I doubt that Spb has full support for the original software.

Hi! Thanks for your word. To tell the truth I don´t know how exactly you are doing this process. Omce you change a file extension windows ask for a confirmation if you accept the confirmation there´s no way that the file change its extension by itself.... Repeat the process and follow it step by step.

i love this mod, but I can't extract the files. winzip and winrar both say unknown compression type, and I was also wondering if the theme has a MRU screen or landscape. thanks in advance

Those changes left my mobileshell running at 1.3MB but achieve mainly what I wanted from the WM7 theme

Why does the WM7 1.1 theme use 5.7MB RAM? Just curious - its such a big difference.

I don´t know the exact reason but you can blame the unexperienced skinner. If you look closely at thescript files you may notice that it has a lot of patches, remarks and possibly some redundancies. Sorry!

Hi Luiggi, please don't apologize just because I only have 64MB. Your WM7 theme is awesome. For others out there who are memory constrained - I copied into my existing robodad 9 button theme Luiggi's WM7 qa_layouts, qa_status and qa_menu_btns (actually the colorful one someone posted in this thread). It worked - I get the larger status icons up top where I prefer them - 9 button speed dial and the 3 page layout and 3 button Now screen.

Yes I do, in fact is ready since 3 or 4 weeks ago but I don´t make up my mind about the graphics (I´ve changed them a bunch of times since Heefy is busy in his business and can´t support the theme which we both started together). I don´t think WM upgrade is causing this trouble, perhaps did you upgrade your Spb MS too to another more recent version than 2.1?

2.1.1 is the version that Spb released to "prevent" the non original themes to run smoothly, they changed their minds and then released 2.1.2 which is more friendly with the moded themes. I decided to stick to the 2.1 so I don´t know if this theme would work with the newest version.

This is a skin only theme for Portrait & Landscape modes and 240x320 QVGA Only. Also my first public contribution to to xda-developers community. Hope you enjoy it, feel free to modify it as you wish.

Description:

This minimalistic theme has 4 main screens (Now, Programs[9 icon], Speed Dial[8 contacts and 11 in Landscape] and Shortcuts [12]), however there are only 3 main tabs, the Shortcuts screen is visible only in 2 ways: i) Sliding your finger from right to left after the Programs screen. ii) Using the right side soft key, also after the Programs screen. If you slide your finger from left to right or use the left side soft key you´ll never see the Shortcuts screen.

Headsup: Altough is not a proven fact, is very likely that the Alarm in the Now Classic mode under certain conditions may cause unstability of your phone, this unestability may be manifested in difficulties to sync with Activesync, unability to pick up a call, call incomming and in general notifications not showing up. If you don´t want to take any chances with this behavior all the scrpits for the Classic mode related to the alarm function must be dissabled. I prepared the attached qa_layouts.dat.zip which dissables all alarm related functions in Classic mode the Pro mode still has it. Just rename the file removing the extension ".zip" and copy to your phone.
