Apparently that depends on which type of barcode it is and the quality of the camera the phone has. There is a guy over here that was developing something called Barcorama that would take a picture of the barcode and "read" it back to you so that you could use the data in it. But I did not hear any progress on that recently. There are java applications for dumb phones with nice cameras that can tell you info on supermarket barcodes or books. It is real and not very new idea.
