View Full Version : dcd 3.1.2/radio 3.39.10 very slow gps lock

okay, so i've heard everyone having very good luck w/ gps on dcd's 3.1.2 rom and radio 3.39.10, with satellite locks as quick as ~20-30 seconds. Mine take a very long time, sometimes in excess of 10 minutes. Here's what I have going on:
dcd's 3.1.2 rom
radio 3.39.10
gps settings: program: com4, hardware: none, baud rate: 4800, manage gps automatically
location service setting: on
[HKLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS] GPSMode:4 (0X000004)
QuickGPS installed
Google Maps Mobile installed
Gps Viewer installed

I open Gps Viewer and set it to COM4: and click Open GPS, and it takes at minimum 10 minutes to lock onto even 3 satellites and get a date and time and lat/long, and any other status. Something can't be right here.

I used to have dcd's 3.0.4 rom and never had a problem getting a gps lock.

Any ideas on what to check?

Let me guess, you have Verizon. If I had a nickel for every post about GPS on Verizon I could buy Verizon and implement a PDE agps server.

isnt 10 minutes still too high for vzw? i thought you could lock in 30sec?

Could take up to 10 minutes for first lock depending on weather conditions, location of satellites, view of sky etc. Once it gets an initial lock, it'll lock in 10-30 seconds.

Though he could have Sprint, in that case a fresh PRI update would make him pretty happy, but I'd be willing to bet he's on Verizon.

So this brings up the point that if Sprints solution is PRI update, what is the alternative for Verizon? I don't think *22802 is going give the same improvement, any options here?

Guys, at the moment there IS no solution for Verizon. Verizon does not provide info to their PDE aGPS server. We don't even know if they USE a PDE aGPS server. The ONLY reason Sprint Moguls can lock so fast is because of aGPS and that alone. If Sprint didn't have a PDE server, they would be seeing the exact same lock times as Verizon.

This is why I've been going on and on and on about why we need an official software update from Verizon. That way we can analyze it and try to extract aGPS server info from it.

well in adition to the agps server info, i think the sprint PRI may change a couple other gps-related values, but that can be done manually to an xv6800. thats what im working on proving right now.

Sometimes I get a GPS lock within 10 seconds.
Sometimes I get a GPS lock after 2-3 minutes.
Seomtimes I fail to get a GPS lock.

My conclusion: Verizon is just screwy.

btw, I am on Verizon, and my biggest issue is that with dcd's 3.0.4 i had no issues, gps linked in a matter of seconds, no more than 30 on a cloudy, even rainy day. now it takes forever with 3.1.2. granted, today i locked on 7 satellites at once, but it took a good 15-20 minutes. any help you can give me, dcd and other senior members, is greatly appreciated!

ps - i'm starting a new job that is going to be a sales job that is completely on my own, and gps would help me out sooo much since i'll be driving all over ohio!

oh, and we have had beautiful weather here lately, so clear skies and obstructions are not an issue at all.

when i do get a lock, it's pretty damn accurate.

im on VZ, and inside 10-15 foot thick cement/steel roofing, and it takes me about 45 seconds to get a lock. outside is around 10-30 seconds. i doont know what else to tell you, except try it out on a CLEAN DCD ROM.

Also not getting any GPS lock. Let it set for over 45min and nada.

I can't find GPSView anywhere... But I found something else that was similar I think.

However, it finds the GPS... But it just sits there. Spewing 'no' data, as if it can't find any sats at all. Changed the reg key to all the values--nothing.

Not looking for a solution, just letting you know I am part of the "Don't work" statistic.

Vets...wow I am a newbie here and let me ask a question and then step out the way to keep reading...

I am a Senior Technician and have this new VZW HTC6800 for about 2-wks now. GPS is nice and I have NO (NADA) no need for it but having it would be just a nice options. So ignoring the fact that I really do not need to have gps....

What benefits would I have just updating to the rom over the current device? Put it like this when I install WinXP I tweak all the settings to get the most out and remove unneeded MS stuff out. As a tech I want the most performance without all the mess that slows it down. Seeing that I am this type of person/tech would changing the rom for this fact be good or just stay where I am with the current device settings? My main usage on the phone is the:

1. Voice dial call (a must since I drive a lot!!!)
2. Phone function of course
3. HTC Home Customizer to have all my features close
4. Sometimes, a need to open Word, Excel, pdf files

So again with what I do...again...would changing the rom for this fact be good or just stay where I am with the current device settings?

Side note: any links to new rom & steps to install?

gps is def a pain on Verizon... interesting reading some of the explanations here in this thread.. makes sense.

I know for a fact their GPS program is pretty much instant to get a lock on regular phones. I'm not really sure how that compares to the gps we use but I'm sure it's some kind of a hybrid between agps/gps to get a quicker lock like you guys were talking about for sprint.

If Verizon ever gets off their butts and releases an update for our phones we'll hopefully see some closure here. Until then, I guess we should just be happy we have GPS at all, considering Verizon isn't giving it to us :)

dcd and I have been working on it and think we may have found a fix for Verizon.

It's pretty complicated to go back and forth about via pm or email, so an AIM account is preferred.

If you have Verizon, have poor GPS performance, and are interested in testing this fix, send me a pm with your AIM sn.

Speeds on my mogul are pretty ok but sometimes i have to reset the phone to get a fast accurate fix.

IF: your phone is looking for GPS and not finding any, it is probably cause by the cache in the GPS memory. if you have S2US and your trying to get a fix, it will 80% of the time lock up the Chipset and require a reboot of the phone.

On morning: 40-1 Min Fix

After that :usually 10-30 Seconds

S2US PISSES ME OFF! but i like it. DCD thanks for a good RoM!

GC,

I tend to side with you that just swapping the rom is a placebo. Can you share with us the potential fix yet using 3.1.2?

I am about to re-flash my phone for other reasons, and I'm teetering on the edge of going back to 3.0.4 to get stable GPS while you guys perfect the fix for 3.1.2. Before I do something so drastic, I'd like to attempt your manual fix.

Thanks,

GC or DCD,

Whats the deal with this "possible fix" I am anxiously awaiting this and keeping my fingers crossed that this works. Do you still believe you are on to something or are you back to the drawing board?

We've gotten mixed results with the testing thus far. Some who have NEVER been able to achieve a lock have gotten locks within 30 seconds. Some say they don't see any change.

I must reiterate though that this "fix" is not something that works wonders. It merely helps the current situation. People who have trouble getting an initial fix, people who don't see locks for 5-10 minutes, etc may see improvement with this. Since I've applied it, I've noticed consistent initial locks taking anywhere between 30-60 seconds on Verizon. I'm happy with that for now. If you apply the fix and don't see any improvement, it doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't work, as others are seeing results. Unfortunately, we've been unable to determine why this happens.

The Titan GPS, though functional, will NEVER be able to function like it does for Sprint customers. Until other carriers provide access to a PDE aGPS server, there will always be hardships for the customers. No amount of hacking, fixing, or upgrading can remedy this.

I'm contemplating just publishing the fix and letting whoever wants to try it go for it.

MrTek
17-06-2008, 07:30 PM
Publish it... I want to try it :)

It can't be any worse than it is right now. If I want to use GPS I have to remember to start it 20 minutes before I need to use it.

I second that GC, publish it for all to try at our own risk! You also could get additional feedback more quickly this way. Rather than only sending it to people through IM on a name by name request.
