Well I'm using Tomtom 6, l'm not a big fan of it, the maps are quite bland and boring.

What are other GPS softwares that have decent maps that work with the touch diamond? I'm quite pissed Igo8 has issues..

I am using CoPilot 7, I got it with my Orbit 2 a while ago, Its ok, easy to use, POI Searches can be a bit annoying but and the routing isn't as good as the tom tom I don't think but it still gets you from A-B.

I have to say it's the same for me. It's actually funny because I have Garmin XT on the Diamond and I have Garmin in my car and both use the same map file so it's a bit overkill. Only used GPS once since I got the phone and that was to try it out of curiousity

Im using TomTom 6 now. I have a TomTom Go 920 as well.
Never used Destinator 7 or Garmin XT - are these good? better than TomTom? Worthwhile checking out?

I released TomTom allows you to "Navigate to" and you can choose a contacts address - handy since I have addresses for most my contacts - it would take ages to store them into favourites.

But the screen draw is very very slow comparing to the Kaiser. Perhaps because of the VGA screen, don't know.
Also the directions and pointer are runnig about a second slower than the Kaiser (it's running 10 mtr behind my car).

Hopefully there will be a TomTom 7 and hopefully that will run smoother, I'm a very big fan of TomTom.

You need to config settings in Garmin. to cable GPS, and then point to correct COM (in my case COM4)

So strange, how come at my diamond it runs like 'dikke stront door n trechter'?

Anyway, I only found McGuider to run real smooth at VGA. TomTom's maps are so old, the A73 in Holland is not on it, and no HighTechCampus in Eindhoven, and the renewed road throug Sittard is missing. Too bad, if you live in sittard, and work in Venlo and Eindhoven :p McGuider has it sorted out.

I am running TomTom 7.5 with the latest maps for Australia. I have to say it is nothing short of fantastic and AFAIC TomTom is simply the best navigation software out there!

TomTom 7 runs beautifully, has updated icons and stuff and generally looks better than TomTom 6 does. Also the street names etc are SO clear on the beautiful 640x480 screen on the diamond!!!

I would like to know in particular the opinions of anyone who disagrees with me in regards to TomTom being the best. Please state what you're using but more importantly why you think it is better!

**i hope my english isn't that bad :-)**

there are some possibilities, for your needs.
there is a software colled fugawi global navigator whitch can sync with a pda/ppc and installs software on pda/ppc. you can scan your own paper-maps into the program using a scanner or use so calle topographic cards, in germany you get this one digital from the "landesvermessungsamt", i don't know if this type of cards are very commen in other countries...

i have tested it with bavaria-maps and can say that i am not that satisfied with these topographic maps on my "little" screen and i do not have the passion to create routes, tracks, poi etc. but it is an interesting software, though.

there are is other software, too, for the german guys in this forum here:
http://www.geolife.de/geonauten/12-gps-und-pda-neu.php
(for the english speaking ones: this link lists four apps to navigate with: Strepla, OziExplorer, FUGAWI and ATLSoft.)

Yeah I know what you mean, the 'Frames per second' is pretty low. What I like about the TomTom maps is their graphical simplicity, every other GPS manufacturer now is making their maps more 'pretty' and 'graphical' but TomTom realise that more crap on the screen makes it harder to read at a glance! I can look at the TomTom screen for a split second, see the road, any turns, a couple of street names, etc and know exactly what's going on. Other GPS apps you have to stare longer at the screen to get the same information.. Not cool. In fact, you could argue it's dangerous!

There used to be a slightly complicated workaround for using Garmin Mobile XT with an inbuilt non-Garmin GPSr [ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v17qLk77SAs ]. From what optika wrote it seems its simply a matter of directing GMXT to look for a cable connected GPS and direct it to the port used by the internal GPS.

Is this different for the Diamond or what?

Hi, did you have to do anything out of the ordinary to get the maps to load?

I installed my copy the other day with the latest updates (Installed fine) - I then split my map in half (I'm using the South Eastern maps) and copied them to the internal storage. The Diamond is not on the supported device list for Navigon 6 - can you verify it installs properly using Navigon's installation program? I'm not talking about some cracked version, I want to buy the latest version directly from their online store and I'd like to be sure it works before I order.

I'm currently using Garmin Mobile XT, but I like the looks of Navigon so I'd like to use it rather than buying the latest maps from Garmin.

RunGPS for bike training

Only had it a short time but not sure the battery is really up to much to be honest. I am going to run my GPS test shortly

Tom Tom on medium backlight with a demo running continuously but with GPS fix
Memory Map with backlight set to off after 2 minutes with GPS fix

My previous P3300 did

Tom Tom test = 4 hours
MM test = 6 to 7 hours

May need to get an extended battery for longer runs on the bike.

I use GPSTuner (v5).

It supports Geotagging (I need the information for pictures), has interesting features and is quite cheap (~30 EUR)

I'm using TT7 and like it, though I have noticed it's a little bit laggy, you know telling you to turn when you've just executed the turn.
Still happy enough with it

I swear I didnt notice this at the start, but now my TomTom is misbehaving. It is REALLY inaccurate, about 50m behind where I actually am at times!!

It's starting to piss me off. I hope they release an update to fix this bug real soon. I've read many other people mentioning the same thing but noone has an actual solution.

I wonder if the problem is with the Diamond's GPS or the TomTom software?

I use GPSTuner for hiking, sailing/boating. geocaching

Very nice, complete and cheap software, allowing to download/calibrate google maps automatically before the trip on your PC or even during the trip over a data connection (GPRS or 3G).

Calibrating scanned maps is also quite simple.
I recommend it.

Errr.... Try this thread which is about a month old: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=404360.

Well I'm using Tomtom 6, l'm not a big fan of it, the maps are quite bland and boring.

What are other GPS softwares that have decent maps that work with the touch diamond? I'm quite pissed Igo8 has issues..

What are others in the US using? I have TT7 with my free local map, but I can't seem to buy other maps. Looking for an alternative. Especially since my TT910 died.

im using three different GPS apps on my HTC p3700 WM6.1 English (also have a HTC P3300 WM5)

1. GMXT with Chinese font support with both English (pinyin) and simplified Chinese maps. nice application, fast rewrite rate, crisp screens. the maps for china are up to date, and very comprehensive, though there are some minor issues over navigating route choices, but to be honest all GPS apps have this problem. adding speed cameras is problematic. believe me in China new roads, buildings and speed/relight cameras are added every week...

2. Mapking2007 (not R12) with all the China maps, both simplified Chinese and pinyin maps. Maps are oldish being that none have been upgraded since mid-2007 but i like the way the application functions, very intuitive and logical, adding departure, waypoints, destination... either in map-view or navigation mode is so simple. adding speed cameras on the fly is simple!!! i also like that there is a small compass-to-destination displayed on the map when in navigating to destination mode, something so simple yet not found on other apps. (i am not referring to the standard compass in GPS apps).

3. iGO8 this is a new acquisition and i am yet to fully explore this GPS app... just getting sorted with Chinese font support, maps of China, POI's, buildings etc. but looks promising including the adding of speed cameras... :)

4. destinator 7. for china with china map sucked.... chunky, poor map data, buggy to uninstall, poor speed camera support or manipulation of data... didnt last long on my PPC's

6. R66 with China map, nice, graphical, similar and cross between all GPS apps, pity is the support and ability to manipulate speed cameras, and the China map is only available in simplified Chinese. no English (pinyin) map. the 2006 map was 350mb while the newer (latest edition map) 2007 is 650mb, and this slows the application down considerably... even if there was an English map available it would not be my 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice...

I also use the first three apps on my HTC P3300... and I like the scroll wheel and trackball, which I miss on the P3700...

I used Smart2Go with Asia maps. I had it in my old Elfin. I installed the software and copied the maps over to Diamond. It works like a charm. GPS locked in within 5~7 secs with 3 to 5 satalites.

Hey Swiftblade.......
Can u share a link of Smart2Go with ASIA maps please......

I have been trying to decide for the last week between TomTom 6 or 7 and Garmin XT.

I thought all was lost with Garmin when I looked on their website and you can only buy it on SD card. I rang them and they said it was something to do with having to activate the maps using a GPS receiver code or something??

Is this not the case then? Can I get XT on disk from somewhere?

Also as I am not technically minded in anyway, I am a bit nervous about downloading TT7 to my device, thrn trying to find the right maps, and trying to set it up, and also how much the maps might cost me?

Is there an idiots guide to doing this anywhere? I have looked but can't find anything (very little free time to sit trawling through thousands of threads!)

Thanks in advance for any advice or assistance.

Matt.

I use TT7 for a few reasons...
i) always seems to work once set up correctly
ii) lots of maps available (Australia, Americas, all of Europe)
iii) Maps are reasonably up todate, and with TT7 there is mapsharing
iv) my kids love the character voices (Homer, Austen Powers, etc)

Used to it now so would take a lot to change
