HERMES "Universal Remote" Beam Capability

So I got to thinking today, there's got to be a way or a program to use the IR beam to command a TV or DVD/STEREO like a universal remote, right? It should be capable of sending those simple commands... Anyone got any ideas?:rolleyes:

Already been tried, sadly like alot of handsets the IRDA transceiver is suited to close quarters communication rather than at long range. Tests doing this sort of thing yielded the same results as wiuth other devices, it would only work reliably at a small distance. :(
