OK...I have an interesting camera question. The XPERIA X1 is fairly similar in specification, and yet that can do 640x400px 30fps videos (according to PDAdb and Wikipedia) while the Touch Diamond can only do 320x240px 30fps videos. People have fiddled with the registry to get better video quality settings on other HTC devices, so does anyone know of something that I have overlooked which may make such a hack/upgrade impossible or not worth trying?

If not, can someone with the device please search the forums for details on how this was done before and see if they can record 640x400 or 640x480 30fps videos with their Touch Diamond.

brilliant, just what i've been scouring the net for the last hour....
..... VIDEO RECORDING DETAILS !

as DARK FIRE asks, the sony Xperia has the same chip driving the device and can do VGA video recording @30fps.
(unless you live in USA! political problems it seems lol!).

the 2 main deciding factors that i'm thinking of between getting an Xperia or a touch pro (raphael) are:
1)800*640 resolution is sweet, but on a 3" screen may be too much squeezed into too little. after having my universal for the last 3 years i love the big screen.
(i drooled over Qualcomm's SNAPDRAGON prototype!).

2)the video camera VGA@30fps.

i want the camera recording feature as a priority, so if the diamond DOESN'T have VGA@30fps then that makes my mind up easy for the Xperia.
if, BOTH can do good video recording, then i'll need to think about the only issue of the screen size and resolution.

nowhere on the net could i find anyone reviewing the diamond and mention the video recording/playback quality, etc.
they always stop at the still camera shots.

so who's 1st to confirm the official spec of the diamond regarding video recording, and if any exist...hacks to improve it!

Here you go mate: http://www.coolsmartphone.com/article775.html
On the middle of the page you'll find a link to download a clip recorded with diamond in it's original format. That video has on average about 19fps. Seems like the fps depends on lighting condition. lower lighting condition = low fps

thanks !

i'm disappointed with the resolution & framerate from the 2 recordings on that site :(

those videos were Qvga and barely scraped above 20fps ( as you mentioned).
there is definatly something the matter with the software if it can't record VGA@30fps.

the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 will (once finalized, as stated in the specs) record VGA@30fps in 2 formats, using the SAME CHIPSET as Diamond!

another example, the LG viewty, can record VGA@30fps, QVGA up to 120fps.....although it is a different chipset (http://www.zoran.com/Zoran-s-APPROACH-R-5C-Multimedia) and has the benefit of the Divx codec.

on this site (http://www.bengalboy.com/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=1107&start=0), horrible as 1/2 the content & it's layout may be, the guy has a pre-production Xperia and plays around with it a lot.

on the topic of video recording, he takes a few videos, but his site uses GOOGLE VIDEO as a host.
the original Xperia recording is re-encoded for the web.this translates into even more artifacing and framerate issues.

he does give solid information about the quality and framerate of the Xperia's recordings, saying :
"The Quality of the video is much, much better when viewed on the X1 or from your computer.
The conversion process by Google to host this video has caused a degradation in quality and graininess that is not there when you view it as an original.
The Prototype does not have a menu for other video formats at this time, and, this video is in MPG4.3gpp format in about a 20mb file size.

Higher quality formats will be on-board in the commercial version. Already the frame rate has been improved from about 10 frames/sec to 22 frames/sec actual with a slight ROM improvement from .74 ROM to .75 ROM...."

the Nokia N93/95 series phones record very good video.
the Qualcomm chip found in the Diamond/Xperia SHOULD be able to at least match this.
here are videos recorded on the Nokia N93/N95. (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/images/features/N95/video/)

video recording at a decent resolution and framerate is an important feature for me.
if the diamond struggles to do Qvga@30fps then i will get the Xperia or something better later this year.....(like a SNAPDRAGON based device).

You MUST be kidding, right? The HTC Touch Diamond camera is HORRIBLE.
If you take a picture of a not moving object like a building at very good light conditions, you may get a decent picture. Otherwise, this camera is USELESS and provides a horrible quality.

If you want to know what I'm talking about, compare the Touch Diamond camera to the Nokia E90 camera which has the same MP size.
Or if you really want to see what is possible with a TINY cell phone camera, get the new SonyEricsson C902 phone which is thinner and less wide than the Touch Diamond and it's pictures are incredibly good, almost at Nokia N95 level.
Also very important: shutter release speed and focusing speed, the C902 is aprox. three times faster than the Touch Diamond. OUCH.

The lack of a photo flash/light is also a problem.

So if you're looking for a good cell phone camera, the Touch Diamond is the wrong place to find it.
