View Full Version : [Updated 17 September] GC Java Pack 1.2.6 for Windows Mobile
GC Java Pack 1.2.6 for Windows Mobile
GC Opera Mini 1.2.6 for Windows Mobile
LAST UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 17, 2008
Read the changelog for a complete list of changes.
Instructions for setting up Opera Mini in 1.2.6:
1. Completely uninstall any previous versions of either GC Java Pack or GC Opera Mini.
2. Install either GC Java Pack 1.2.6.cab or GC Opera Mini 1.2.6.cab, depending on whether or not you use Gmail.
3. Open Opera Mini located in "Start->Programs->Opera Mini" folder. (For Java Pack users, Java and Gmail shortcuts remain in "Start->Programs")
4. Follow the prompts and install. Once installed, a new link called Setup is created in "Start->Programs->Opera Mini." Opera Mini must be closed to run Setup.
5. In Setup, there are several configuration options that can be customized at any time, including switching back and forth between using Opera Mini and Internet Explorer as the default browser.
IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ
To uninstall either GC Java Pack 1.2.6 or GC Opera Mini 1.2.6, you must run Setup in "Start->Programs->Opera Mini" and choose Uninstall.
Follow the prompts, when it's done it will instruct you to finish uninstalling by removing it the normal way via Start->Settings->System Tab->Remove Programs.
Failure to do this may leave you with improper browser registry settings. For your convenience, a backup of your registry settings are kept in "\GC Opera Mini Backups."

Perfect for UC, or if you're just tired of having to install Jbed first, then go through the hassle of compiling Opera Mini, Gmail, etc. Everything is done for you!
If you don't use Gmail and just want Jbed and Opera Mini, just install GC Opera Mini 1.2.6!
Warning:
You must completely uninstall all previous versions before installing.
Enjoy!

Opera Mini 4.1 Cab Installer for Windows Mobile
I created this cab to automate the install of Jbed and the latest build of Opera Mini 4.1
This CAB will do the following:
- Install Esmertec Jbed 20071119.3.1
- Install Opera Mini 4.1 - Build 4.1.11355 20080522
- Sign Opera Mini as trusted (removes annoying prompt windows)
- Install shortcut for Opera Mini 4.1 in Start->Programs with icon.
(Includes extra Opera Mini 4.1 icon in the dll for Today launchers.)
- Install shortcut for Esmertec Jbed in Start->Programs.
Perfect for UC, or if you're just tired of having to install Jbed first, then go through the hassle of compiling Opera Mini etc. Everything is done for you in the cab.
Warning:
You may have to reinstall your other java applications if you are using Jbed as your midlet manager already.
Also, it's a wise idea to make a backup of your Appdb folder in \Windows.
Enjoy! :D
Dude, keep these coming. I love the idea of having a cab (to turn into OEM) that has multiple things fixed.
If you were to do this for programs with known issues that need to be set to work on the mogul you would move one step closer to a totally hands free flash; meaning on a new phone you flash boot, radio, and kitchen with all prefs baked in. Thanks again.

Can you make another one with the newer Jbed in there?
It's Jbed Build ID: 20080222.3.1
If you need it let me know.
I don't have it. I've been using this build for a while and it's stable and does what I need. If you supply me with the new build cab, I can port it.

Here's the requested CAB for the newer Jbed version. I'd also appreciate the port, as I've been wondering how to get Opera Mini 4.1 installed automatically via UC Config.

Any idea if this is 6800 only or if it should work on other windows mobile pro phones or even windows mobile regular like q9c. I have a 6800 but I help friends with other phones.
It SHOULD work on all Windows Mobile phones that uses \Windows\Appdb as the default application database directory. It's only been tested on the Titan.

Not sure what to tell you. It was created to be installed on any build of WM. The only thing I can think of is that it was compiled on the Titan, so you may need to recompile it. It works on both my Titan and Apache as those are the only two devices I have to test.

GC, what a great idea. I love what you've done. Thanks!
Using a program like PocketPlus on the main page, I've put the Opera icon on there and hit it once..and bam it's up.
I'm interested in doing a similar thing with the Gmail Java app. I'd be interested to know how to go about building this. Would it be possible to post an explanation for those that might have similar requests? Specifically, how to change the security questions to be non-existant, to provide a Opera icon..etc.
Thanks again

Does GMail give you access to the .jar and .jad files like Opera Mini does?

The cab file does this automatically. Uninstall the java pack. Then navigate to \Windows\appdb and delete everything inside. Reinstall the java pack.

It only works with Windows Mobile devices that use \Windows\appdb as the application database directory. I'm unfamiliar with the Prophet so I don't know what directory it uses. Some devices use \Windows and not \Windows\appdb.

hi gc14,
i posted this in the wrong topic. It regards your app.
"hi there. Nice concept! I tried it, but a few things don't work on my htc touch. For example: I do not get any shortcut in my programs list. Maybe that's because I've got a dutch rom. In difference to the WWE rom it uses (duh!) dutch names for the folders. So in my example the shortcut should be placed in startmenu/programma's/
is it possible for you to update this?"
Is it \Windows\Start Menu\Programma's or \Windows\Start Menu\Programmas ?

You can try my new CAB, which supports non-WWE roms. but don't forget to do a soft reset after installation In addition to the programs shortcut, you can run it in the command line using :OperaMini command. Download here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2303373)

do new versions of jbed keep coming out?
or are you just finding newer versions? or what?
not that i mind the updates :)
New versions exist as packages in new ship roms that are released. They're not always updated in every ship rom. I extracted this latest version from the latest Kaiser ship rom.

in reality, we should be using native apps on a PPC.
problem is, opera mobile is a memory hog!, so we've no choice but to use opera mini (with the mogul's pathetic RAM).
for most other stuff, I imagine there's native stuff

you can manually back up the opera settings. Go to the appdb folder and backup the files that look like this "s0__d1". If you have other midlets, it may not be s0. But if you installed this bundle cab that put Jbed and Opera at the same time, s0 is the "position" for Opera, and the d1 etc. files arethe settings, cookies, favorites, etc. You dont need the ones that just say "s0__" or the one that says selector.
Just copy those files back into the app db folder after installing the new cab.

also I cannot get gmail to work either, it installs but said cannot locate S1...

Hey gc, I love this Java Pack you made. I never used Opera mini before, but I am hooked now. So much better than PIE. I saw this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401643) about Opera being pulled from a Diamond ROM. There is a newly added CAB to make Opera the default browser. Maybe you can talk with phouki or VOODOOS!L about using that CAB to make a similar one for Opera mini. Looks like it is a CAB of registry settings (found in this post) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2333912&postcount=136)

lol. Great, sounds good.
Well...I hate to let people down..but I don't think making it the default browser is doable. Opera Mobile is a completely different story, as it's a full browser and runs native on the device, instead of being a Java midlet and running inside Jbed.
So far, the closest I am able to get is Opera Mini opening when a link is clicked, though it doesn't load the link.

Does anyone else have problems with Gmail not working? It runs but it won't connect. It hangs for several seconds and then an error appears telling me that it was unable to reach the servers. Opera Mini works fine though.
If the error is generated inside the midlet, then that's an issue with your phone connecting to Gmail's servers. Either your phone didn't have a data connection when you tried, or Gmail's servers were down.

GC,
Is there a way to create an icon that once clicked on: say it was Facebook, ESPN,..etc, on the desktop from SPBPocket Plus, it would open within Opera Mini? Or does that make things complicated?
At this point I love the Default mini , I love the Gmail shortcut (it takes seconds to get to my email) but I'm thinking of potentially creating a tab on the desktop solely for websites. (similar to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=404448 but the links do not work after installation)
I guess it would be a matter of 1: Creating a shortcut image that was quality, 2: Creating a .lnk file with the appropriate code that would open Opera, then go to the site.
If you could explain the how to on the Opera element, I'll see if I can figure out how to change supbro's Cab installer's for this purpose and adapt them.
Thanks!

Still can't use this install. Goes to install the app then 2 seconds later says install unsuccessful.

I installed the GC Java pack on my Samsung I760 without error. I was able to start up Gmail and login to my account. While viewing mail I should be able to press 7 to delete a mail item but there is no response from either the dpad or the keyboard (Fn u). The only way I can delete a mail item is to select Delete from the Menu->Action selection options.
I've read through the thread and haven't seen any one else with this problem. Any thoughts??
Thanks Randy

Hi!
I am using google apps for my domain instead of gmail and this needs another jar file instead of the gmail one.
It can be found here : http://m.google.com/a/MailByGoogle.jad?make=Generic&model=Advanced%20MIDP2&ver=v1.5.0.1193&dc=gorganic
Can you please include it in your next release of this great java package? Or maybe post instructions on how we can sign and create icons in the start menu for our own java applications?
Thanks!

Also,
Is there a way to have multiple java virtual machines running at the same time?
That way, I could have opera running while gmail is also running and I could switch between them.
I really like these java apps, they are much more snappy then native apps.

Hey GC - I'm guessing you're testing DCD's 3.2.1 ... I noticed he's included a newer version of Java, 20080521.4.1
Any chance you can update this package?
No particular reason to compel the upgrade, I guess... I just like newer shinier things, ;).
Thanks again for all your hard work and contributions!
Hey guys...
Been on vacation for the past week...I'll be combing through all the threads and posts since I've been gone to get a little caught up.
Oh and yes I've been testing 3.2.1 for a while now.
GC,
Is there a way to create an icon that once clicked on: say it was Facebook, ESPN,..etc, on the desktop from SPBPocket Plus, it would open within Opera Mini?
Thanks!
Implementing that would require some coding to develop a today plugin, and it's not a simple code and fix as people would want different links. I'll look into something down the road...but for now, my main focus will be to update and fix current features.

I've never used that, but I will test it out and perhaps include it in a later release. I will not be posting instructions though due to the complexity.

You can only have one instance of Jbed running. You may be able to run both Jbed and Jeodek at the same time, but I've never tested that, and it probably wouldn't be a great idea (just speculating).

dcd updated Jeodek Java in 3.2.1, not Jbed. They are two different midlet managers. He includes Jeodek in the kitchen because it is included in the Ship Sprint ROM. I decided to go with Jbed for my pack due to the features Jbed has that Jeodek lacks. If people want me to develop a pack for Jeodek, I can look into that but as of now, I am using the newest build of Jbed Java.
Hopefully that catches me up since I've come back from vacation. If I missed something let me know.

I just installed this, gmail works great, but opera mini gives me a "There is no application associated with "StartOperaMini". Run the application first, then open this file from within the application."
BTW: I *can* open opera if I open java itself, but clicking on the opera mini ICON itself, is what gives me the above error
Any fix for this?
Do you have mortscript cab installed?

Do you have mortscript cab installed?
Nope, is it supposed to be?
Installed it and now it works. Thanks (didn't know it needed to be).
It doesn't need to be. It's provided in the java pack cab. Not sure what happened during your install....
boxermansr
18-07-2008, 03:03 AM
Now when I restart it's doing it again, I copied the mortscript program to /windows/start up but its shows the "mortscript loaded" window at each boot, is there any easy/quick way to get it to load @ boot w/o poping up the notification?
It doesn't have to load at boot.
Try this...
Uninstall mortscript entirely.
Uninstall the java pack entirely.
Soft reset.
Reinstall the java pack.
Soft reset.
Then try and open Opera Mini (from Programs\Opera Mini)

It works, but doens't now (again). It was working until I ran SK-Tools auto-clean (which I run from time to time). I'm guessing it removed some setting that associates the shortcut with mortscript or something. If I go into file explorer and click on the startopera (whatever the filename is) file, then it loads. Guess I have to figure out what/where SkTools is removing something.
Yeah that's an sktools issue then, cab is working as intended. I'm glad you pinpointed the issue though. Hope you enjoy the cab.

18-07-2008, 05:32 AM
I got it working. Sktools has some retarded setting that for some reason clears out file associations and I guess it was dis-associating this from mortscript, or whatever. I disabled that setting, and now its working great; and yes, I do like the cab, very nice, all one in deal :). Thanks!

I just PayPal'd you for your Java-gmail solution, which I've been using on my XV6800 for about 3 weeks. At first I had to log in to gmail each time I'd launch it or Java; but after a few days, gmail began to log me in automatically.
I would be in nirvana if you could find a way to have gmail alert me when a new message arrived. I suppose I can have gmail pushed to my 6800's "real" email application; I didn't want to because I wouldn't have my gmail contacts handy. Now I use OggSync to sync my contacts between gmail and my 6800. But it's still nice to use the familiar gmail interface in Java.

Thanks so much for the donation, while they're not necessary...they're greatly appreciated.
I'm glad you're enjoying the app. As far as the notifications, that would require a LOT of programming if it was indeed possible (I'm not even sure). It would require interaction with both jbed and gmail's servers which requires coding in both Java and C# .Net.

How much work would it take to get Youtube and other .flv sites to play in JBed? I love your solution and wonder if it was possible to have TCPMP handle the links in Opera mini for .flv types. That would be so sweet.
PIE blows sometimes; I need a browser that does everything and looks good.

I installed version 1.2.4 on dcd 3.2.2 and first off, let me just say thanks for making it so easy to install and use Opera mini! Great work! I do have a couple of comments though. First, for some reason Opera Mini installed into a folder named Opera Mini but Gmail is just under Start --> Programs folder (which I prefer). Your first post stated that both would install to the Start --> Programs folder. I know this is a tiny issue. :) The other minor issue that I am having is that when I installed this, it changed the Internet Explorer icon so it is no longer using the 'e' symblol but is now a bright yellow wavy piece of paper (like it is launching a text editor) with the letter 'M' on it. Is this expected behavior?

If you read the changelog you'll see that in 1.2.4 I moved the shortcut to Start->Programs->Opera Mini. It also reflects that under features in the first post. This is due to the fact that after the first time you run Opera Mini, a Setup shortcut is created and placed inside Start->Programs->Opera Mini allowing you to change settings.
The other issue is normal. I did that for a reason to let you know if you have Opera Mini set as the default browser, without opening Setup (referenced above) and checking. When you first ran Opera Mini, I assume you checked 'Yes' to making Opera Mini your default browser. To change back and forth, open Setup and go to Main Settings. The first option should be 'Set Internet Explorer as default browser". Choose that, then exit Setup. The PIE icon should be set back to normal. To make Opera Mini the default browser again, just follow the same steps.
If you have any other concerns or comments, please let me know.

I appreciate the clarification and I apologize for my mistake in reading the change log. What you said about the folder for both icons makes perfect sense. I am not sure that the PIE icon change was neccessary but it is not a problem either. I guess if the new icon wasn't so hard on the eyes then it would be easier to swallow. :p I would like to say that I tried to set PIE back as the default browser to get the icon back but it never changed back to the normal PIE icon. I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling and selecting 'no' and all is wonderful now. Thanks again for the very helpful CAB.

After you change IE back to default browser, you have to soft reset for the icon to be set back to the E.

Hey gc14, I have a quick question for you. Thought it might be best to place it in this thread. Google Maps is now a midlet, and I tried to download it and run it, but it would seem that the download Google keeps giving to me can't run properly on the Titan. The menu doesn't even show GPS as a capability, and the main menu has to be accessed with the D-pad. It was never like this as a stand-alone. Do you use Google Maps 2.2? And if so, have you seen this? Have you looked into possibly adding it to your Java pack?
Thanks.

Is there any other way to install this opera and gmail without getting the java pack? Reason being, I have a newer build of java on my phone. I've installed gmail and opera mini alone, but they always want to prompt me to connect each time I run them (even used some 'fix' that was supposed to fix the 'selector.utf' file, but it's still prompting me to allow to connect to use gmail/opera mini).
With this pack of course, it wasn't an issue, but since I already have a newer build of java, it'd be nice to have the best of both worlds, so to speak.

Hi all,
Before trying your pack (which seems very nice) I would like to know if it handles simultaneous running apps. I have jar for sending SMS (mobiSMS for who knows) and i really would appreciate to be able to have both Opera and this jar working at the same time, so i can send SMS while surfing the web.
Is this a feature of your pack? If not, do you know about any suitable trick to do so?
Thanks in advance

A similar question was discussed earlier..but no it's not possible. This would be because the java apps (jbed and jeodek) can't run more than one java client in them. It MIGHT be possible to run both jeodek and java at the same time but it could be very problematic.

Ok, I installed your cab and it works great. However, I can't get the shortcut to work using AE button plus. I'm assuming because it is a mortscript file.
I had been using DCD's kitchens, then just installing Opera mini. I never had security questions that I was having earlier. Was DCD doing something to avoid those prompts?
All I really need is the java cab that comes with DCD's roms. I already have my opera icons saved that I just copy over once I install Java. I tried your version and it's nice, but it does not work with AE Button plus(love this program).'

N/m mind I edited the selector file myself and just used the Icon I already made. Seems to also open up faster since I dont have to run a script.
I think you're missing the whole point behind this app. The reason for the script is to be able to make Opera the default browser. In 1.2.2 there was no script as the feature wasn't included. As far as the security prompts go, I'm not sure why you were receiving any as all the security prompts have been removed. Either way, glad you have it the way you like it, though if you don't want to use it as the default browser, and you don't want to use the icons that come with it, I'm not even sure why you need to use it to begin with.

I installed no2chem's latest rom. Phone is fast now. After that, I tried to install the java from here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407667
Then, I installed opera mini. I kept on getting notifications. Previously, I would just install dcd's rom and opera mini, copy my pre-made shortcuts into the program files menu, and I would be good to go. This last time I finally ran into those security prompts. Maybe it's because I was installing a different version of java from DCD's? Anyhow, I got it work. I wouldn't mind to be able to get opera mini to be my default browser with the script...my problem was that I couldn't map my IE button to opera mini.

I've got an odd issue with Opera Mini. I installed the 1.2.6 package, no problem. Opera works fine if a little ram hungry. I have a problem with text entry boxes. When I go to a site like Digg and try to leave a comment, I am able to enter text into the text box, but when I hit reply, no text is sent. No error or anything, the text disappears from the box like it's sent but doesn't get there. Strangely, I had no problem with the login box's. I have tried the same with IE, Opera 8.65 and Skyfire and all send the text correctly. Is this an issue with Opera Mini, or just my phone?

Try refreshing. I find Opera doesn't always refresh the page when it should.

I have read the success stories here on installing GC Java pack, but no luck in installing either 1.2.4 or 1.2.6. I had a previous version of Java jbed installed & working with Gmail, but with opera mini not yet installed.
I uninstalled the previous java & then try running the .cab file. It starts OK, then I get a message saying that it was "not installed sucessfully', with no further information.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Any chance of an upgrade to Gmail since a newer version was released? Thx.

GC, the Opera Setup Option to set Mini as default is not working.
Here's my stats:
DCD 3.2.6
Radio 3.42.50
PRI 1.35_002
Got lots of apps if you need to know any of those let me know. But, I went from GC Java Pack 1.2.2 to the current 1.2.6. All I did was uninstall GC Java Pack 1.2.2 as a whole as it was not possible to uninstall Gmail or Opera Mini on their own. I tried opening links in my e-mails through the Gmail app and they open in PIE only. I have a SportsCenter app that opens a live stat link and that will only open PIE. Please advise. Thanks.

Links from my Gmail always open in PIE as well. I just assumed that was the behavior of the Gmail app.

My question is there a way when mini opera is in landscape mode to make in flip the other way in line with the keyboard. Mini Opera would be upside down with the keyboard flipped out. It seems as if this would have been fixed a long time ago.

There must be something wrong with your device or it's a 1.2.6 issue. I'm running 1.2.4 and haven't ever had an issue with Opera mini rotating the wrong way when they keyboard is slid out.
Now that I think about it I didn't have any issues with it in 1.2.6 either. My only issue with 1.2.6 is that the hardware keys associated with the bottom softkeys don't work properly. I think it's an issue with the latest version of GMail though because I installed the latest version manually on 1.2.4 and have the same issue.

Let me elaborate better, in the settings of mini o you can have always start in the landscape mode (aka sideways, Right ?). In this mode mini o is not rotated clock wise but rather anti-clock wise from the portrait mode. Clock wise would put the screen in line with the keyboard. However it is anti-clock wise,

Oh that makes more sense now. I've never tried that setting. It's probably got something to do with java. I've noticed that most programs that have a specific landscape mode rotate in that direction for some reason.

GC, do you have plans to update this to include the new Opera Mini 4.2?
