Schap's new ROMs interface unveiled!! - New video demos

Hi all! After 6 months of hard work, here is a preview of the exclusive user interface which is going to be released soon in my next ROMs.

TouchMenu is the first part of the UI, this is probably the most powerful and customizable menu for Windows Mobile. As an example, it originally replaces WM Start Menu, but it can as well replace many of HTC applications (Cube, Task Manager, Comm Manager, RSS Hub, ActionScreen, Large Start Menu, Long Press End Key, ProgramView, Contacts) and offer a quick access to e-mails, SMS, contacts, appointments, tasks, call log, favorite websites or programs,... all in a small executable!

TouchMenu supports finger scrolling and gestures, for example you can switch from a menu to another by sliding your finger left/right, or display context menu by a long press on the screen. Each menu has four different views (large list, small list, large grid, small grid). As the rest of the future user interface, TouchMenu has a nice Vista/WM7 look.

TouchMenu has various built-in menus :
· All Programs (Start Menu replacement)
· Active Programs (Task Manager)
· Recent programs
· Favorite programs
· Settings (Control Panel)
· Documents
· Favorite websites
· Contacts
· Messaging (E-mail & SMS)
· Appointments
· Tasks
· Calls
· RSS feeds
· Recent documents
· Today (day events & actions)

But you can do much more by creating your own custom menus where you can add contacts, program shortcuts, website links, system actions (for example: reset device, rotate screen, sound profile, clock, brightness backlight, WMP status,...) or links to other menus. You can also replace icon for each program/folder/contacts/menu with a custom image.
You can personalize menu order and transitions, and each menu can be called from command line. That means you can associate a different menu for each action on the device, for example: press Start > Programs menu, long press on top-right corner > Active Programs menu, left SoftKey > Appointments menu, right SoftKey > Contacts menu, E-mail button > Messaging menu, long press Call button > Calls menu, long press Power button > Power Actions menu, long press End button > End Actions menu,... You can even associate menus to finger gestures and active corners using FTouchSL. Possibilities are unlimited!

As I said, TouchMenu is only a part of the new UI, I am also working on other developments, for example a Now screen (like SPB Mobile Shell but with fully customizable elements, layout and graphics) and a finger-friendly control panel (a bit like WM6.1 Standard Home plug-in) for a quick access to most common mobile settings. Unfortunately, I still have a lot of work and all couldn’t be ready for integration into the next ROMs, so I will include only TouchMenu in the next “Full” ROMs, the rest will come later.

Don’t hesitate to tell me if you have some interesting idea to develop concerning the new interface.

I will prepare soon a private beta for next ROMs (first for Kaiser device, then Hermes), so I am looking for some people who have some time and good WM cooking or development knowledges, to test and help me improving my builds. If you are interested, let me a post here (explaining in what you are good, if I don’t know you) and I will contact you by PM if you are selected. A public beta will be released a bit later if there is no major issue.

Schaps I have been using your Roms since 3.54 on the Hearms, Although I am not a cook I am what you would call a customizer and have used what I have learned in the Hearms and Kaiser forums here to tweak various roms I have tried here. Holy Dejavu!! I was almost ready to trade my Daughter for my Hermes again, I missed my Schaps! This looks incredible... I am very interested in trying this for my Kaiser... Cooked a few wizard roms in my time... Did some beta testing for Faria and for Anichillus, also beta tested the only copy of a wizard rom made by Custel. I cooked and recooked every ROM release for Wizard to make it my own.... Never had the guts to make my own release...

If it works as good as it looks, I bet I can talk my Daughter into letting me flash her hermes!! I can beta test that one as well!

Hey, the interface looks great and exciting...Just one request, i am not sure if it is possible, but after seeing how much you are capable of doing, i think it should be a breeze for you..

In the call log, instead of having icons representing incoming, outgoing and missed, can you put images of the person there?
For example, SPB Mobile Phone Suite has this feature and it looks like this

However, you say it's only exclusive for your roms, so we won't be able to use it in other roms? While I think that's a good idea to keep your ideas as yours, but your roms might not be for everyone, so releasing it as a cab would be wonderful.

It seems as if Schaps' upcoming roms (for both Hermes & Kaiser) have made many people think twice on the concept of rom cooking.

An almost half-year seeming dormancy on his part gave way to many guessings ... but it appears that the silence hasn't been that much hopeless (!) for he's now coming up with a product that is, to a good extent, a "stand-alone creation" - compared to "innovative alterations" applied to original/offical roms by other chefs.

I have this feeling that Schaps' new works will considerably change the xda tradition of rom developement - perhaps to the extent that xda developers will challenge Micorosoft programmers by gradually changing Windows Mobile to a completely different animal.

I have all the good reasons to think that the "wind of change" is on this horizon.

hey Schaps, that looks really nice, love the wm7 theme and "functionally". if you release before microsoft I'll say they copied from you, ahahahahah. on a serious note though I think you should go apply for a job in the mobile and devices department, that way you can input what the community wants while they input what the business side wants. wish you best of luck on the application if you do decide to do it.

This has been the interface I have been waiting for. I really hate all the functions in Windows Mobile that require a stylus.

I tried Pocket Shell but your layout makes absolute sense. It looks almost Iphoneish but that is a compliment.

If it is as functional as it looks, I hope Microsoft takes notice and hires you.

As I expected, many of you would like to test my new ROMs, but I need efficient feedback from experienced users, that's why I asked for some people with development or cooking skills to join a private beta. Previous public betas were more a waste of time for me than a real help, what's more this first beta is not meant for a daily use, so I won't take the risk to have hundreds of complaints. I need about 50 beta-testers, so please understand I can't choose all of you, and I will choose uppermost those of you who already helped me in the past or who described their skills as I asked. If there is no major issue, a public beta will come a bit later.

I have worked hard this week, hoping I could release the first beta during this week-end, unfortunately I've got some problems which forced me to delay the release date, but to help you waiting I will try to release the Lite versions of my ROMs in the following days (WWE & FRA at this time). Lite versions will be clean ROMs with no additionnal stuffs, but as closer as possible to what could be an original MS release.

As you can notice, I'm taking a different way as I'm not only cooking but developing ROMs, my aim is to realize my own interface and substitute HTC apps to get a total control over ROM development, this is also an opportunity to introduce my work in mobile development. As you can imagine this is months of work, so please don't blame me for the delay...

The hybrid ROM's just don't cut it. A dialer from one, an media player from another. Just looks like it. Though functional, its not pretty.

I certainly agree with the MAJORITY of that. Schaps is king, IMO. His ROM's far exceed the other cooks' offerings. However, his releases are sporadic, at best. His 6.1 Beta ROM is still the best 6.1 ROM out there, IMO. However, it's messed up BT stack keeps me from using it currently.

I'll happily run this new ROM on my Tilt when it comes out; assuming it actually comes out.

Best of wishes to Schaps and here's hoping he blesses us with a solid ROM!

After eight years, Microsoft's interface is still the same unfriendly, tiny buttons stylus required mess.

Here comes Schap in six months to overhaul the entire thing and make it what the Pocket PC should have been.

If it wansn't for the iPhone, I'm sure WM7 would have been the same old stuff too.

First of all congratulations to schaps, your work looks wonderful and i have to say that it beats the hell of many windows mobile interfaces i have seen so far.

I have however a question, you mention that touch sensitive control pad is supported, but only for diamond and touch pro.
I have a samsung i780, and it does have a touch sensitive control pad, so do you reckon it's possible to use it there also(this, if your work is distributed in .cab)?

I think he stated that the kaiser will get it first then the hermes. But I'm afraid the diamond will :P but there's nothing I can do about that. We have light sensors, but no accelerometer. (I think I spelled that right)
We need it to tilt and do such things as schap showed in those videos. So sorry, no TF3D and no tilt your phone to switch panels :(
Right now those will only be available for the Diamond and soon the Touch Pro.
