Hey y'all so I really recommend checking out youmail, it's a voicemail client for your phone. And once you've checked it out, tell me if you're having the same problem i am. When I go to start > settings > phone > call options: and then try to change the voicemail default number (the number that my phone calls when I press and hold "1") I keep getting an error message saying that the settings could not be saved. However, on tmobile's end, they see the change, but still my phone just calls the regular voicemail number when I press and hold "1"... thoughts? Is there a registry hack somewhere just to make my phone call the correct number when I hold 1?

Thanks!

I wonder if you have to have your device "unlocked". I have changed my voicemail number to my main answering services vm and it works fine.

Well, I'm fairly certain that my phone is unlocked because I've modded it ALOT. Unless you mean SIM unlocked, in which case I don't think that it is.

I just signed up for YouMail a couple of days ago. Lovin' it. What I did was change my Speed Dial #5 to the YouMail voicemail number. My Speed Dial #1 is still for T-Mobile voicemail. After doing this, my calls get routed to my new YouMail number and not the T-Mo number anymore. It works pretty well for me. When I check the voicemails on the old T-Mo number, it only plays the old messages left before switching to YouMail.

Try using another Speed Dial number besides the #1. I think that one isn't changeable.

what does youmail offer that tmo voice mail doesnt?

what does youmail offer that tmo voice mail doesnt?

YouMail allows you to set custom voicemails for multiple callers. It also allows you to use "Ditch Mail" for telemarketers, blocked callers, and unknown callers. Ditch Mail gives the caller a generic message stating that you aren't receiving calls from blocked or unknown callers and to try again from an unblocked number. Then (here's the clincher) it hangs up. You can also view and listen to voicemails via email. It's great.

Ive had it for a week, and love it! My friends get the silly VM messages... all else get the SMART VM where it states the name of the caller and says Im not available...

great stuff

while changing my shortcut number five to the youmail number will be a nice shortcut to it, does that mean that if i use youmail, i'll neve get a "new voicemail" notification again? it's gonna use up a lot of texts if every vmail i get has to be announced via text message.

you can set it to only send you emails... I have a 300 txt msg plan... and didnt want to eat them up with youmail messages. SO, I set it accordingly.

I totally understand that it is possible to do that, and if it comes down to it, I'm fine with that, however, I'd love it if youmail was more fully integrated with my phone. Ergo, if I could change the number for the voicemail system (which youmail says that you can) and receive vmail notifications, it'd be perfect. Does no one in this quite impressive community know where the registry edit would be to change that number? Thanks for all the help!

Youmail offers the chance to have custom voicemail messages to specific callers...one for your love, one for your mom, one for your boss, etc... it will also transcribe voicemail messages and either txt them or email them to you! lots of other finer points... but thats a good overview

Is your service prepaid? If so, prepaid T-Mobile voicemail #s cannot be changed.

Nope,
I have a monthly plan, and even when I called the guys at tmo about this issue, they said that they can see my trying to change the number, and that it should be changing on my phone. I just need to find out where in the registry that phone finds that vmail number, and to change it. Thoughts?

Wow lol

I can't believe noone responded to you, bro. It's pretty easy. Do the following:

1) Settings
2) Phone
3) Call options

In there you will see Voice mail number, change it to youmail's #.

On the other hand, this service looks pretty promising. Thanks to you guys, I now know about it. I really hope it works in Canada too.

Will try right now :D

EDIT: Great, It doesn't work in Canada :( That sucks...Oh Well...One day I guess.

The multiple voicemail responses and the voice to text of Youmail sound interesting and I will check it out after this post. Youmail looks better, just wish it had mobile call screening.

I use Callwave free version because it has mobile call screening which allows me to actually listen to the person leave a message in realtime and answer it or ignore it with one button.

I can't believe I stumbled on this thread about YouMail (I've been monitoring these boards because of an smtp issue with WM6.1 but I have been using YouMail for more than a week and love it.
One thing
The instructions below to change the "1" speed dial. For me, it seems to work fine until (I think) the phone is rebooted. I seem to have to reprogram it in about once a day. (yes, my phone says retrieving network settings, then says 'saving', and yes my phone is unlocked).

Once you register with YouMail, they'll give you the number to the voicemail center. Save it as an Outlook contact. After saving, right-click the number and the option to "Add to Speed Dial" should be available. Once selecting it, it'll give you the option to assign the number of your choice.

To use Speed Dial, just hold down the assigned number on the keypad until the number automatically dials.

so i signed up on youmail the other day and just didnt feel like messing around with the forwarding and all that (being lazy). today i decided i was going to tackle the task at hand and ran into "can not save setting on network" while trying to change my call forwarding info to the youmail voicemail number (this was after changing my voicemail # in settings to work with speed dial 1).
i was then forced to call tmobile and throughout trying to get it to work, they set my voicemail # back or my reboot set my voicemail # back to the default tmobile.

i really do not want to mess with it and have to be on the phone with tmobile again, so if anyone experiences problems with call forwarding to youmail while having their "voicemail" number set in settings please let me know.
i read above comment that someone else has to reset the number after each reboot (after restart is when it started working and the number was changed to default tmo vmail #, but thats also when it started forwarding properly (again could have been they fixed it on tmobile end though too))

So what's the story with saving the settings to the network? Anyone been successful changing the voicemail phone number to route to youmail's # ?
I don't mind using "2" to dial youmails voice mail, but that doesnt work when you check voicemail using the option in the CHome check voicemail section. It still dials the old T-Mobile Voicemail number

I haven't tried to change the default voicemail number to the YouMail number. All I've done is follow the setup instructions from the website and change my Speed Dial #5 to the YouMail voicemail number. No, I don't get the new voicemail icon in the topbar--nor do I get the "New Voicemail" prompt in the Notifications panel. However, my calls DO get routed to the YouMail number. I receive a text along with an email telling me when I've gotten a new voicemail. I guess it doesn't really bother me that the aforementioned notifications aren't "kicked in" with YouMail. As long as I get SOME KIND of notification, I'm happy.

Well i don't have a text message plan, and i don't want to get billed .15 for every text it sends me. Thats the really big bummer to me.

for those who have successfully changed your voicemail setting and it saves to your network, do you have tmobile or another provider. if you have tmobile do you have post pay or flex pay account.

personally i cant save my call forwarding and the tmobile rep even had problems getting it to save at first. i question the flex pay vs post pay accounts because with short codes for twitter for example, i am told because i have "flex pay" i'm considered prepaid service with 2yr contract and can not use short codes. so questioning if maybe this is a reason as to why i cant properly save my forwarding voicemail number on the tmobile network

i dont think its because the pay method. I have a post-pay account (t-mobile US) and i cannt get the setting to change either for speed dial "1" ... i just said to heck with it and used speed dial 2.

So after reading through, I think, and I could be wrong, that the common thread of those that can change the number with a tmo account and those who can't is due to the fact that their phone is sim unlocked. Mine is not, which would explain why I can't save the number. I agree with pudge, I don't wanna waste all of my texts on youmail just because the phone won't let me change the number.

Question: to those of you who have been able to change it in the Settings >Phone >Call options section, when you get a new vmail, does it notify you of it on your home screen?

i don't think it does. part of the faq's on youmails site , theres a section talking about it not giving the voicemail icon. but that the text messages and emails are the only way to know if you have a voicemail

well my problems extended past the changing of the number in the phone settings (i actually asked this of a tech support rep during my hours of phone time with tmobile this evening)
i have actually started a thread regarding my problems, but i'm having issues on call forwarding "Error: Not able to save to network" ( this has nothing to do with the "1" for speed dial, will not forward at all just drops the call when it should connect to youmail #.
i have to actually have a tmobile rep change the number in their system for my call forwarding, however the call only works 25% of the time, call drops on person calling me instead of forwarding, call doesnt ring, call goes to busy signal, call works for youmail.(i have 4 bars and sitting next to the people while testing this at work as well as a tech rep with tmobile tested and even happens on my standard tmobile voicemail forwarding)

pda/smartphone tech with tmobile stated the voicemail number is hardcoded into the phone and with each reboot you would have to change it manually and it can not be saved to anything but what their number is (which is crap because i do not have a tmobile rom, i'm using ricky's 6.1, unless he was referring to sim lock) he also went on to state "i do not think we support youmail at all, it will not work" i told him he is wrong, it does work, others on forums use it with tmobile. basically my issues are entirely opposite of youmail and lie entirely on tmobile and my call forwarding not saving to network or dropping my calls. i have even tested the sim in another phone and still have no luck on changing call fowarding settings without an error so it is not my dash since i tested this on a motorola rizr.

if anyone else is having a problem or has had a problem would greatly appreciate some insight on this and i'll be sure to post my outcomes in the thread i started regarding call forwarding if anyone else happens to run into this. so my theories before are definitly debunked on the post pay vs flex pay and i now lean more towards the voicemail number under phone call options being sim related

I have t-mo, and changed it fine with both the TMO ROM and Kavanas ROM... the youmail site gives you two ways to change your number.

the first is: *004*17142043114# then press send.

the other is to change it in your settings...
