I've seen lots of threads around asking for what to do etc... Read this thread if you're clueless (or stuck)!
Starting
To upgrade your devices ROM, you first need to prepare the SPL (Secondary Program Loader) to allow the new ROM to boot.
This can be done through JumpSPL/SoftSPL (temporary) or HardSPL (permanent). And can be undone by flashing a WM5 Official ROM from here (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Prophet_ROMs).
Before you upgrade anything, you need to know whether your device is a G3 or a G4. To find out, read this (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=prophet_g3g4_how)
JumpSPL/SoftSPL
The idea behind "JumpSPL" is to temporarily make the bootloader load a new ROM/RUU. JumpSPL is not permanent, and will not damage the device if it goes wrong.
To use JumpSPL, download the "ProphetSPLTool" attached below, select the device you have (G3/G4) and click "JumpSPL". After that has run (your Prophet will have a white screen), you need to start the RUU for your ROM.
HardSPL
The idea behind "HardSPL" is to permanently make the bootloader load a new ROM/RUU. HardSPL is permanent, and will damage the device if it goes wrong.
To use HardSPL, download the "ProphetSPLTool" attached below, select the device you have (G3/G4) and click "HardSPL". After that has run (your Prophet will have restart), you need to start the RUU for your ROM.
The Flash!
Once you have prepared your devices SPL, you need to charge the battery to more than 50% (for safety!)
Using "ProphetToolsLight", the same functions as above will be applied, with the addition of the ROM flash being carried out.
You'll need to copy the ROM file (*.nbf) into \Utils\Flash, and then do Hard/Soft SPL as per above. Once that has done, another RUU will open up and flash the ROM! Simply hard reset after that, and you're done! :D
Recovery
If at any stage your Prophet fails to start properly or can only enter bootloader follow this:
Download and install the latest version of ActiveSync (Google for it)
Download and unzip an AKU2.2 (No Vendor) ROM for the Prophet-any AKU 2.2 will do-from [here | ftp://xda:xda@ftp.xda-developers.com/Uploads/Prophet/Prophet-roms/RUU_Prophet_220734_2207114_024721_NVID.exe] or [here | http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Prophet_ROMs]
Within ActiveSync DISABLE connect through USB (Tools->Connection Settings->Uncheck Allow Connect through USB)
Put the Prophet into bootloader mode (hold the camera button and insert the stylus into the larger hole next to the power socket)
Plug the Prophet in via USB
Run the RUU specific to your device (G3 or G4) from the AKU2.2 folder. If there is only one RUU, use that.
When it has finished: disconnect the Prophet, and then re-enable the connect through USB in actyivesync before reconnecting the device.
Your Prophet should now work!
Notes:
* It doesn't matter if you can't sync files, so long as when you plug the device in it says "USB" in the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
* XP must be used if your device is a G4 (Vista may work for G3 devices but I'm not sure).

...mkay, regardless of which version of prophet tools i'm using (normal or lite), its my understanding that i have to place the .nbf file into the "\Utils\Flash" directory... But where exactly is that? on my local disk, desktop, prophet tools installation folder...?
I've tried installing a number of ROMs, all of which have failed except a Crossbow PDAViet ROM which is only slightly better than the standard i was running before (no WM6 gui...) Any ideas why that is?
Please advise, and thanks in advance.

i also noticed that with the Crossbow ROM, my prophet isn't detected on my vista machine where it was before the slight upgrade. Does this mean that all "new" roms will require me to use xp after a prophet upgrade...?

Hi guys,
I am a Newbie who has just bought an M600 off ebay last night (so I don't know if its a G3 or G4 yet) and I am thinking about upgrading to WM6. I would like to follow this guide as it looks simple and I think that I could follow it.
However I have a few questions:
1)You mention using the SPL tool to prepare the SPL using SoftSPL or HardSPL but this seems to be the first thing that prophet tools light does. So can I perform the entire operation via Prophet tools light or do I need to use ProphetSPLTool first and then after the SPL is done switch to ProphetToolsLight? If I can why did is ProphetSPLTool mentioned in the guide.
2) How likely is it that I brick my M600 by doing this, as I would really really hate to brick it? Could it just randomly brick or would I need to do something very stupid to induce it? And is there anything not in this guide that you should tell me about?
3) Can I use this same tool to change the WM6 rom that I am using (i.e go from a WM6 platform to another WM6 platform)? and if I decide that I dont like WM6 can I use this same tool to restore it to the original orange WM5 rom (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Prophet_ROMs) (i.e WM6 to WM5). I I need a differant tool please could you point me in the right direction.
4) I will either be using Cloudyfa's '[WM6.1] Prophet ShadoW 2.0 TE' or the 'Prophet S4V.19701.01 (UC)' ROM. I assume these are compatible with this tool.
5) Also two very small things. Firstly some ROMs claim to be UC compatible what does this actually mean.
Thank you for your patience with a newbie and any help is appreciated.

Just use Prophet Tools Light, and use the "SoftSPL" option. This cannot brick your device unless the ROM contains an SPL (which cloudyfas do not), Hard SPL can brick your device if you pick the wrong SPL, but other than that should not.
This tool can be used to flash from any ROM to any ROM (for Prophet only),
For recovery, I'd try and use the original RUUs as they are un altered, and will have the least chance of failure.
UC means "User Customization". Look at the original thread here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=366337).
Cloudyfas 19701 ROM may have some issues with the SPV M600 SIM unlock, but Prophet ShadoW does not...
Welcome to the world of Prophets! :)

Wrong exe! The "Prophet Tools Light" (maybe called "SPLTool" or similar) is the one you must run!

Hi,
I followed the instructions, copied the nk.nbf file to the utils/flash directory but it seems that the rom flash program can not find the *.nbf file. The error is: "Error [238] : File read".
Is the nk.nbf the correct file name?
Do I need to copy more files?
Thanks

UPDATED
All sorted now. See next post. :)
Don't worry. Seems like I was getting worried about nothing. This is now my girlfriend's phone (I got a Trinity and gave her my old Prophet) and it really needed the upgrade.
All I had to do was download the ROM, unzip the files, click on UTILS / Flash / RomUpdate Utility, and the ROM flashed fine. Not sure why one would need Prophet Tools Light, or why "You'll need to copy the ROM file (*.nbf) into \Utils\Flash".
THANKS FOR THE ROM l3v5y, APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND EFFORT.

Hi,
I couldn't unlock my screen and couldn't find any information on how to do it except hard reset, so I did it.
Now I'm trying to to upgrade from wm5 to wm6.1 and after searching the docs, it seems to me that the simplest way (for beyond-dummies like myself) is to use Prophet Tools Light (PTL). I tried it (description below) but I cannot reconnect the PDA with Activesync after the the screen is white (i.e., after the softSPL, if I understand it correctly). Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
My setting:
-win xp sp3
-activesync 4.5
So, here's what I did:
1. connect PDA to PC (via USB)
2. active sync asks me to create profile but, since I'm updating the OS I don't think it's necessary and so I cancel. The username in activesync is Guest and the status is connected.
3. execute PTL
4. choose G3 option and click on HardSPL
5. the cmd window in windows states that it copied two files to dev:\, jumpSPL.exe and SPL.nb
6. I authorize the execution of application jumpSPL in the PDA
7. the PDA screen goes white, the PC makes sounds as if disconnecting a USB device and then connecting again but the activesync status remains "not connected" even after waiting for a while. I tried disconnecting and connecting again but it remains the same.
8. the window for the Prophet RUU HardSPL G3 opens, I click on "I understand..." and then next
9. although the PDA is not connected I click on "I completed..." and then next
10. I get the "Verifying the information..." window for a while and then the current information says "Image version:" and nothing afterwards and if I click on the Update button I get an error [240]
I guess the problems in step 10 are to be expected because the PDA is not connected.
Thanks for any tip.
Carlos

Hi Carlos.
I think I had exactly the same confusion as you, have just sorted it. Maybe these steps will help you:
1. Set up an Active Sync with your pc. Backup all contacts and calendar with your Outlook.
2. Follow the steps in the Prophet Wiki (link below) to find out if your device is G3 or G4 and then HardSPL your device:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405384
In theory, you will not lose any information on your device. During the process, it looks like you are flashing a new ROM, but you are not. It's just a HardSPL. When you reboot, you will see if it has been successful as your new HardSPL will show up on the bootload page.
3. Download the ROM you want to flash. I chose "(WM6.1) Prophet Future 20270 Clean" by l3v5y, so I can only recommend this one for now. (It's working great so far on my device!):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=417657
4. Once it's downloaded (save it to your desktop), unzip the files to a new folder (created automatically by whatever unzipping software you have on your computer).
5. Make sure your device is active synced to your computer.
6. In your unzipped folder, click on UTILS / Flash / RomUpdate Utility. Then just follow the steps on your PC. There is no freezing at white screen, all worked fine for me. I had no need to use Prophet Tools Light, or "copy the ROM file (*.nbf) into \Utils\Flash".
7. Once flashed, your device will restart. (Disconnect it from your PC and follow the instructions on the device). Once it's all running fine with the new Windows 6.1 ROM, reconnect it to your PC and you will be directed through setting up a new ActiveSync partnership. Follow it through and you will soon have all your contacts and calendar back on your new ROM.
Hope these steps help. They worked for me!
Mattster. :)

Hi Mattster,
I followed your instructions and the ones on the links you gave, I use the software given but still haven't been able to HardSPL successfully (step 2 in your explanation).
When I HardSPL, the screen turns white, there is the sound of a USB disconnected and then connected again but activesync does not reconnect, so the whole process fails.
So, the problem is reconnecting activesync with the PDA.
Cheers,
Carlos

Hi Carlos.
I have experienced that before. Unplugging the usb cable then plugging it in may help, or otherwise soft reset your device, wait for active sync to connect again, then reclick on the the HardSPL (MS DOS Batch File) to start the process.
RECOMMENDED: Try it again but follow these steps carefully:
1. Download HardSPL for Prophet G3 or G4 (depending on which your device is).
2. Use unzipping software to open the .rar you have just downloaded. it will extract the files to a new folder which in my case (G4) has 14 files in it.
3. Make sure your device is plugged in and active synced.
4. Click on the file called "HardSPL (MS DOS Batch File)" to start the process
I did this yesterday and it all worked. Remember, your device's screen will stay white; the instructions to proceed all appear on your PC's DESKTOP. Keep your eyes open for them.
Hope this helps. Remember, it can be confusing but it IS possible and you WILL achieve it eventually! :)

Hi Mattster and thanks for the help.
But I still haven't managed it. I tried plugging and unplugging with and without soft reset. I even tried changing the USB cable :-).
At one point, I did get a reconnect but there was an error in the HardSPL cmd window (cecopy failed). Anyway, I did manage to finish the process (always following instructions) but when the PDA rebooted, it had the same firmware versions:
IPL 2.20
SPL 2.20.0000
GSM 02.69.21
BTW, it's a QTek S200, so a G3.
Any ideas on what might be wrong?
Thanks again.

Hi,
I've tried most of the suggestions I got with some progress but have not made it to end of HardSPL (yet).
My last attempt was to try on an laptop which I recently setup and has a very simple XP installation without any USB devices (only PCMCIA wifi card). There is something that looks strange:
1. hard-reset
2. connect PDA to PC, without creating a new profile, so just a simple Guest connection
3. run HardSPL
4. white screen
5. unplug and plug back in a few times until the active sync connects again
6. click tick box and next
7. click another tick box and next
8. version of existing ROM is identified and I click on update
9. on the next screen, it says that the ROM will be updated from the current version (which is given) to version **EMPTY**, so it does not identify which version it should update two.
Maybe this is the problem?
Again, thanks for the support (and patience :-) )

Hi Carlos,
Sounds to me like a communication problem between the two or that your hardspl has not worked. enter boot loader and tell me what it says.
One thing you should always do is have the update folder in the root directory, that being your main hard drive and in no other folder apart from the one it unzipped in. This can cause problems when flashing. Did you do this?

This can be done through JumpSPL/SoftSPL (temporary) or HardSPL (permanent). And can be undone by flashing a WM5 Official ROM from here (http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Prophet_ROMs).

Hi there
I am a noob in this area. I am reading the forum for the last days and trying to upgrade my i-mate jamin but i get stuck...
#2# then I tryed with ProphetTools and after doing the HardSPL it asks (in jamin) to run JumpSPL I click on yes and then I get white screen (in jamin) I click the flash rom and then I get either:
- error 260 or 274 - connection
or
- error 208 - file open (and I did put the nk.nbf rom file in ...\Tools (as said on PTL) and also tryed in ...\Utils\Flash)
#3# While in white screen (achieved with PTL) I also tryed ROM 21501 (with its own RUU) and I get 3 colour screen after supposedly successful upgrade...
I found this comment from dioxda2 in another thread...
Try to flash the NVID from Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353547,
if your Prophet works fine after that, you may flash any rom you like :),
...try to read my thread and....Good luck and :)
... actually my prophet (jamin) works fine after I flashed the NVID, the problem is that I can't put it to work with anyother ROM...
I started a new thread as my problem is not only with Prophet Tools
