I just spoke to someone at UKPhoneShop who resell T-Mobile contracts and they said they should have the MDA Compact IV from the 30th of June. Therefore from the 30th of June T-mobile will be selling the MDA Compact IV, there's some contracts that are definitely available from UKPhoneShop but the 12month contracts haven't been confirmed by T-mobile yet.

Looks good.
Have you seen anyone else selling it? Do you think the will be the first to get the mda compact iv?

According to pdadb, the mda has 4gb too, but you're right the thickness should be 11.3mm.

It could have different back cover as the O2 Xda diamond has.

sounds good if it is going to be the 30th, although i dont think it will be the MDA - as people have said it will be a diamond with a t-mobile contract.
I'm not expecting the actual MDA until end of july
*crosses fingers that it is the 30th*

Before you guys consider going for the T-Mobile version of the Touch Diamond, be aware that it looks completely different and not really in a positive way if you ask me.
Even the O2 version looks slightly different but not by much.
I saw the MDA Compact IV during a presentation and compared to the Touch Diamond, I would even call it UGLY, so buyer beware.

11.5mm... 11.3mm... You'd need a micrometer to tell the difference tbh. We're not talking Diamond vs. Pro here.
Personally I like the Compact IV's hardware looks (of course pink TF3D looks like a duck's behind, but that's why we're here, to get rid of stuff like that), so that doesn't bother me. The more rounded profile vs. square edged Diamond makes up for the loss of the fancy battery cover.
What does bother me is giving up the £5/month discount you get buying from T-Mob direct for the sake of getting it a week earlier. If all I cared about was getting a Diamond a week or two early at the expense of price I would have paid Expansys' 500% markup on a grey import.
Supposedly it'll be on T-Mob's site by the 6th, I think I can wait.

I spoke to the guy on the phone and he was very adoment about how the Mda Compact IV will be better than the diamond because it will be tuned for the network. They're just reselling a Tmobile contract so I'm pretty sure they are getting the MDA Compact IV.
They're not one of the people who sell any phone with any contract, they re-sell the proper Tmob contracts.
mr_Ray, where did you hear Tmob will have it on the 6th?

Think it will be worth hanging on for the T-Mobile MDA compact iV. Hopefully early July.
There could quite well be another ROM improvement. Also the Route 66 Sat Nav 7 day trial is worth having before you buy it out right.

I spoke to the shop, they are indeed selling the T-mobile compact iv.
Date wise it depends but it looks like v early july. or perhaps sooner depending in t-mobile themselves.
As for the tariff, I can't see any evidence that the tariffs will be any better directly from retail, especially as you get cash-back from buying online?

damiantmc, is there any information on pricing yet?

1. Lady - clueless - "sorry, i dont know"
2. Man - semi clueless - "we don't get told due dates"
3. Man - switched on - "its on our internal system as coming soon, i cant give you an exact date but i'd guess at about the end of next month"

How comes lots of people claim to work for Tmobile (on this forum and other forums), yet they still give different infomation? IS there more than one "system" for different people?
I'm not doubting, just a little confused.

He said its been pushed back due to software problems :(

Most people who work for t-mobile and give others a releasedate just work in a callcenter. In other words, they don't know anything at all.

Whats the ROM like compared to the Diamond?
Is it me or is the casing more rounded?
Accessories?
Any GPS software bundled? Is the battery still shit?

Hi there!
In addition to the above questions, what is the build quality compared to the diamond. Does it attract fingerprints? Are there any disabled functions... e.g. wifi?

hi
can you confirm radio/ROM versions? Even better, can you dump the rom?
thanks
jerrry
27th June 2008, 08:48 PM
The ROM version in my Compact IV is
1.28.110.2 WWE (from 9th of May 2008, old testing ROM)
Radio version is 0.93.25.05
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth works fine. I hope, than GPS isn´t blocked, but now I don´t know, I will test it. I have only device, not box, not accessories :-( Btw, this unit has only 128 MB RAM chip, my Diamond has 192 MB RAM. After hard reset and TouchFLO 3D activation there is abou 48 MB of free RAM (not too much with compare of Diamond).
The cover of Compact IV is better than Diamond (back cover is lank, Diamond has "triangled" which is not stable on the desk :-( ), and the Compact is a little bit bigger than Diamond (+- few mm). Battery is same as in Diamond (on the battery is title "HTC innovation" :-) ).
I will bechmark both devices (Diamond vs Compact) and give feedback. Btw, speed of Compact IV is same as Diamond (I am using 1.35 ROM WWE in Diamond with registry tweaks (memory, glyph etc.).

I am from Czech republic (check my flag in my profile bruhaha). Btw, GPS in T-Mobile MDA Compact IV works fine, Iam trying TomTom 6.03 version and it is good, yepee ;-)

Ugh. I was afraid of that. Too many places have reported it to have crippled RAM compared to the Diamond for it to just be poor journalism. WTH were they thinking???
The cover of Compact IV is better than Diamond (back cover is lank, Diamond has "triangled" which is not stable on the desk :-( )
The Compact IV looks so much better imo. Enough of an improvement to make me forget about the missing 64MB tho? Sadly not.
I will bechmark both devices (Diamond vs Compact) and give feedback.
Sounds interesting. If you are able to (if it doesn't have to go back to them or something) it would be nice to see how they perform with the exact same ROM and tweaks, see if the missing 64MB hurts things under load as much as I suspect it will.

Guys, i wouldn't take all this as certainty, this phone is a few months old now. When coolsmartphone were doing their week with the touch diamond theirs only had 128mb of ram and they had an old rom which wasn't as good as the current one. It was well know that the dev "not for sale" units only had 128mb of ram, this is not a sign that the sale versions will only have 128mb.

I really love the shape of the MDA; it is rounder and nicer than the Diamond. The only problem I have with the MDA is the nasty magenta/pink/purple colour of its letters and numbers. Is there, in settings, a way of changing the colour to something nicer?

I dont think they can do anything to stop you changing the rom, can they? I have an MDA Vario 2 which you could change the rom on just like any other unlocked phone.
The rom itself may have restrictions, but they shouldnt stop you changing to another rom like the standard touch diamond one

There are lots of dates flying around from different people, some old sources say the start of july so people have made the link and said July 1st, then someone reads someone thoughts as fact etc.
Tmobile themselves have not yet publicly given an actual date. Staff have given dates but even they conflict

I think it is a pity. Unless somebody proves me wrong, I think it is not to a network's advantage to keep silent about new releases. I bet a lot of T-Mobile costumers are getting ready to leave to other networks that have already announced the Diamond or its versions! I really don't understand that. Business-wise it does not make sense. You call them and there's no firm answer. Can you imagine calling Heathrow and ask "when does the BA flight 123 from Tokio lands" and get ten different answers from ten different people? Well, bad example... maybe you can... Anyway, do you get me? :p

I see your point, however Tmobile announced it already several months ago, before O2 and Orange and Voda, they're no worse than any other network.
Networks unwilling to give release dates in advance may be because then if they push it back people get more annoyed. It's also difficult to give release dates as you don't know what will delay the release till you start working on it then it's too late.
PS i want the compact 4 asap, I just understand their position.
Has anyone called them recently?

Just spent 15 minutes on the phone with T-Mobile. The lady told me that they don't know when the Compact IV will be released. It is on the "coming soon" list on their computer. She also says she doesn't know why her own colleagues are giving costumers conflicting release dates. Well, who's right and who's wrong!

That depends on how much stock of the older model it's replacing (in this case, Compact III) they have left to sell. Put the Compact IV on the site before it's ready to sell, kill the sale of the compact IIIs you have left in stock... unless you knock a big number off the price.
Anyway, I wish we'd get a date and accurate specs already... Unless it comes out next week with the full Diamond RAM, i'll probably just wait for the Touch Pro/Vario IV.

Im getting a little imaptient for my Diamond!
My dialemma is whether to get the official HTC version by way of expansys with a T Mobile contract, or upgrade my existing T Mobile SIM only contract to a flext and get the compact IV at a subsidised rate.
If I go with expansys then im tied into the tarrif for 9 months, regardless of whether the contract is 12 or 18 months (they have both options). I would then have to port my current tmobile number to another networks PAYG and then port back again in order to keep my number. If I go the Compact IV route, no number porting will be necessary.
What concerns me about the compact IV is less RAM, half the apps being missing and the ugly custom UI. Can this be unlocked? Can the phone be returned to the way its supposed to be (HTC theme?)
If only T Mobile would hurry with a release date, dammit!

Just a quick question for you all.
I have a t-mobile contract which is now up. I really want the diamond - and am thinking the best bet is to cancel the contract, and then just get a bundled contract through expansys from the same (flext 30)
Are the contracts that Expansys provide direct from t-mobile? anyone got one, anything different etc???
Only downer is that my number will change, but i can live with that

I am in exactly the same boat. Im on a Sim only rollling contract with T Mobile and have spoke to Expansys. Theres no way of transferring my number across unless I port my number to another network's Pay As You Go and then port back immediately to my new T Mobile SIM with Expansys.
Whole process should take about a week.
What expansys deal were you thinking of going for? Im a bit wary of 18 month contracts..

Well you CAN keep your number, you will just have to do what I said - port out and port back in again. Why the system is like that, I dont know!

There isnt any other contract deals on the phone really - only thing would be to wait for T Mobile to release the compact IV, but we have no idea when that will be now.. at least with the Expansys deal you get the original untouched HTC product.

I've been looking around for contract deals on tmobile every other day for about a month now. Expansys are the only people that supply Touch Diamonds on Tmobile as far as i know. Their prices for the phone are higher than they would be if you got the phone directly from Tmob though i think, that's why i'm waiting.
The reason you can't port your number from Tmob to Tmob is to stop you doing things they dont want you to like cancelling your contract and signing up with a new one just to get the new customer deals, they want you to upgrade through them instead.

Actually the prices for flext 30 and flext 35 via Expansys are exactly the same. Also the price of the phone is quite reasonable - £65 for 18 months contract, £95 for 12. Dont expect this phone to be given away 'free' from tmobile direct.

I was talking about the price for the phone, of course the monthly costs are the same.
It's rediculous for them not to give the phone for free on the Flext35WnW for 18 months, it's £765 over the 18 months then they want you to pay another £53 on top.
The MDA Compact IV will be given away free on Flext30WnW 18 months.

The expansys website says its £65 for Flext30. WnW can either be an add on or part of the contract, it's not only an add on.
The contracts shown here will be available at launch from Tmob: http://www.ukphoneshop.com/T-Mobile/contract/mobile-phones/MDA-Compact%20IV/2255/index.html
The 12month contract details are not available yet.
Either way it's your money, but don't make out Tmob are evil and Expansys are offering the contracts at better prices when you haven't even seen the Tmob prices.

It's rediculous for them not to give the phone for free on the Flext35WnW for 18 months, it's £765 over the 18 months then they want you to pay another £53 on top.
Well, to be fair - that £53 guarantees you an original HTC product with the full spec (T Mobile version has less RAM) and full software (eg Opera, Customised Google maps) intact, unlike the T Mobile version.
Its guarantees that you wont have to put up with a horrible magenta UI and a nasty redesigned case.

The Tmob version will not have less ram. The test version that Czech guy had only had less ram because it was a test version not for sale, just like all the other Touch Diamond test versions that the other review sites had. The test versions also contain incomplete roms so you cannot judge things like software or performance.

There isn't any, like I was just saying all the reviews/previews have been of test units, there's confirmation the test units only had 128mb of ram, but there are no official specs for the MDA Compact IV (there are though oddly for the Vario IV).

After a written inquiry a few days ago, got a phone call from T-Mobile today informing me that the Compact IV will be available in mid-July. They are "still ironing out with HTC some minor problems" and the lady says that the phone will show on July's T-Mobile catalogue! Has anybody seen the catalogue - because there's nothing on the web!

i'm still in my 14 days return period and i'm a little diappointed with the casing of the diamond. the phone itself i great, but the case itself seems a bit cheap (design, the feel of the plastic). and that the backside isn't even/level bothers me too.
you guys think the case of the mda will be more worthy ? At least I got that impression from the screens floating around.

Way way less than a month ago, thats very worrying. UkPhoneShop said they aren't listing any 12monthers as Tmobile would be changing their price plans (this was about a month ago) and they wern't sure if theyd be available.
The thing that's putting me off most getting a Touch Diamond is that Tmobile are delaying the Compact IV because of quality control issues or whatever. So whatever problems the Compact IV has, I'm worried the retail Touch Diamond also has these problems so i'd rather wait a month for a fixed Compact IV than get a Touch Diamond now and have problems with it later.
The clock is ticking though, every month passed is another £32.50 down the drain.

I do not honestly think its an issue of quality control thats delaying the compact IV, I think T Mobile are using the time to block many services, such as MSN Messenger and stuff.
The Compact IV will have losts of the Diamonds software and functionality removed, not to mention the gastly magenta UI.
I was seriously considering the T Mobile option too, but they are just taking too damn long to release the phone. Theres a real buzz and demand for this handset right now and they are making a grave mistake having it delayed into August.
If the Compact IV doesnt get released tomorrow, im getting the expansys deal. Although porting my t mobile sim only number out and back in again will be a bitch..

It doesn't take months to remove MSN Messenger. I have a Tmob branded Vario 2 and that didn't have anything like Messenger removed. The ugly UI has been shown in those not-for-sale versions of the phone so i would have thought thatd be mostly done also.
Its the sheer amount of posts on this forum about the issues people are having that make me worried, although obviously the forum shows a biased view as all the people with issues are in one place.
FYI i found Virgin to be good for porting to and then away from again using a free sim - they had good English customer service and didnt ask any questions.

The Vario 3 and MDA Touch / Touch Plus all had windows live mobile and messenger strpped out.
The ugly magenta theme occurs in all T Mobile Windows Mobile devices and will be in the final version of the touch diamond.
As for problems with the diamond, yes there have been - but HTC have since released firmware updates which have speeded up the device and ironed out some of the problems. At least with HTC there will be regular updates. How many updates will there be for the T Mobile version of the firmware? If the previous phones are anything to go by - hardly any.
As for virgin - thanks for the tip. How quickly from porting your number in were you allowed to port it out again?

On an interesting note, I have just logged into the tmobile site to checkout the upgrades on my account, and the old MDA Compact III is on there available to me as free, with the Touch Plus being £40. My tarrif is Flext30 + WnW - 25% discount (out of contract).
So it will be interesting when this does show up on there how much it will be for. Going by what the touch is currently available to me as, I'm thinking £50?

You make a good point there about HTC updating the roms, I'd just flash it with a HTC rom anyway as soon as i got it anyway so may be a better idea just to get the diamond. Maybe they're waiting for HTC to do a better rom, then they'll apply their tweaks, test it and release it.

With the expansys £42.50 12 month contract over the 12 months it totals £605
Tmobile are offering me the Vario 3 for £150, so the Compact IV will be like £200, so 32.50 on my current contract *12 + 200 = £590
So it's almost the same to upgrade to the Compact IV or cancel and signup to the Expansys Tmob contract

Theoritically it's unlimited, however fair use policy of 1GB applies. To be honest, I must say that I was using my phone as a modem connection for my PC and apart from standard browsing, I was using P2P with certainly more than 2GB a month, sometimes exceeding slightly 4GB, and noone ever sent me the warning. But my friend exceeded 5GB 2 months in a row and they warned him. I'm talking about the standard W'n'W for £7.50.

I caved in and bought one through Expansys. Im not bothering with the compact 4 due to ugly customisation, most probably slow release of firmware updates, removal of software such as windows live and even (from what I hear) Teeter!!! most of all because of the unacceptable wait.
As for changing number, like I said I was in the same boat. I currently use a T Mobile SIM only number and want to keep it. Yesterday I aquired a free orange pay as you go SIM, I requested the T Mobile number be ported to it. Porting will take place Monday. On monday I will then get my orange PAC code and port back to the new t mobile SIM.

fair use policy on tmobile is indeed 1,3 and 10gb depending on package, they dont charge you if you break these tho, but if you break the policy on a regular basis (3 times i believe but cant remember if have to be in a row) they apply a throttle on your account which screws u overand basical means you can still get on the web but is slooooow

I phoned Germany today and although they where not 100% sure the person stated the memory as below;
ROM: 256 MB und RAM: 128 MB
Though this does not confirm that this is the 192MB and the 128 MB which is left.
Looks like the 7th is not today?? as its not on the website, though it was on the German website almost 2 weeks prior to launch. I kind of get the feeling the only time we will know about this phone is as soon as someone gets it...
Would be nice if some of the Germans who have this phone would comment on the speicification.

I just need to remind you that if you buy the phone with T-Mobile directly you get £5 off every month for the duration of the contract what works out as £90!!!
Plus if you order your phone online you get additional 10% off the bill every month. In June it all plans from £35 were included, now it's only from £40 up. Just think that £35 was lowered to £27. Just add £7.50 and you've got line plus W'n'W for £34.50.
It's not at the moment, however they will probably include that plan again in August with this 10% off. If they do it'll work out £144 cheaper than contract with expansys, but we don't know yet how much you'd have to pay for mda compact iv comparing to 50 odd quid you pay now for touch diamond.
£30 flext plan however is likely to still work out cheaper with expansys as the phone is only £65 and I honestly doubt the compact iv will be less that £100...

I manage a high street mobile store and am also waiting for the compact iv. I've got staff discount (50%) on my tariff because we sell t-mobile services. As a result my bill is rarely over £17.50 on a 12m contract yet they are still offering a £210 upgrade discount !!. T-mobile upgrades work by giving you a disount off their 'RRP' for their upgrade handsets. The more you've spent over the last 6 months of your tariff, the more discount they give.
At the moment however the market is extremely tough (hence them offering me a discount that gives almost all phones/MDAs for free despite spending very little). The moral of the story is if you tell them you are going to leave t-mobile for say orange dolphin £35 (which now includes data) on phones 4u website with 10m half price, t-mobile will bend over backwards to keep you as a customer and give you a good deal.
hope that helps you lot to negotiate, I just wish we didn't have to wait for them to get the bloody thing in stock !

Tmobile didnt do jack s**t to keep me! I was told to cancel my contract and take out a new one with the Varo III because that was cheaper than upgrading from Vario II to the III on my current contract. And that was from the guys in the Tmobile shop, who had phoned retentions for me aswell.
Considering Tmobile blew everyone else away with their phone and package prices a few years ago after they introduced WNW, I'm afraid to say that I'll soon leave them for 02, and now possibly even consider Orange.
Still £279.99 to upgrade to a Vario III right at this moment, two years after paying £80 for a Vario II....

I need a new phone now and may be forced down the Orange route... I do really like the T-mobile shell though, Also the tariffs are better!
It is about time T-mobile got their finger out of their bum as they have launched it in Germany so there can't be anything wrong with the material or case and I will have one in German if they can't supply and English one.

Now that Orange are offering 'unlimited' data on contracts over £35 / month (£30 with online discount or £29.50 in-store with handset trade-in) and extra minutes, their tariffs are pretty competitive with T-Mobile.
I've just moved and I got 650 mins, 3000 texts and unlimited data for £29.50 per month, and the Diamond handset cost £40.
Only advantage of Web & Walk that I could see is if you want to tether your phone to a laptop, which might exceed Orange's 500mb fair use policy (and strictly speaking, they don't allow tethering either).

Tmob have a 1GB cap on standard web'n'walk so i guess its a case of how often you tether your laptop to the phone, 500mb is probably enough for 4 days or so a month aswell as usual phone usage

Think the Touch Pro on T-Mobile is called the Vario IV (No idea what O2 are to call it) and I have been scouring the web, all indications are 1st week of September, although I've seen the generic quotes saying early August, but these were from sites quoting back in May and early June. However I work for phones 4u and online they are doing 10 months half price on dolphin £35 r 12m half price through mobiles2yourdoor.
T-mobile's HSDPA network is better than orange's and also their 1gb is a fair usage policy and they won't charge if you exceed it where as orange will. Playing with the diamond we have in store on orange, google maps alone used 5meg within a minute or so just playing around

ljames28.... I just find it ridiculous that these organisations seem to have no definitive line of communication (There is a pun here somewhere) As I'm typing this I have had yet another reply from my business rep at T-Mobile after sending her the info in the post above stating the 14th. She asked me who told the person the 14th. Her exact reply is:-
"Hi
Yes I just rang our business retentions and they confirmed august as well"
So the definitive answer isn't the 14th July or the 4th Aug, as their arse doesn't know what their elbow is up to.
Unfortunately I'm afraid we'll just have to wait and see who's right there!
ljames28
11th July 2008, 03:30 PM
Well it looks like there is deffinitely communication going on in the customer services/loyalty/retentions departments as everyone got an email with the same info about the release date which theyre now telling customers. As far as i can tell they only got this info recently so you would have thought if its only on preorder or whatever and not actually out then Tmob would make sure that customer services is aware of this. Telling customers the phone is Coming Soon for months is annoying, but telling them its coming out on the 14th and then delaying it for a month will really push people to Orange.
I guess we'll see how this pans out in a few days, fingers crossed its out soon.
Oh also, I keep forgetting, it's out in Germany, why not bring it out here on the same day. I'd be really interested to know the reason for that.

Totally agree! Last week I was rang by T-Mobile and told that the phone was "coming out only on July 14th because it was going through some testing". But, once it came out in Germany, there was no more justifications for delays. T-Mobile is a German company - if they release a mobile phone there, surely it can be used in the UK. Cannot see what is that different between both networks (it is different if you compare the US, though). And then all the contraditory information T-Mobile UK gives to customers. How come people working for the same company say so different things when answering a simple inquiry. Any manager at T-Mobile who does not make their staff (dealing with customers) aware of the Compact IV's existence should be living in another galaxy. Orange (http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/show/handset/htc_touch_diamond/detail/pay_monthly) and Vodafone (http://www.vodafonebusinessshop.co.uk/Details-Phone-HTC-Touch-Diamond-3021.html) are laughing all the way to the bank. Oh, how many people went for the crapy iPhone today just because they waited and waited and got tired of doing so. Pull yourselves together T-Mobile!!!

Fair enough! If the phone is not ready they should carry on testing it (I just cannot get how the Germans sorted out all the problems and the Brits are not able to) BUT should also not tell people that it will be out on July 14th - if they know they cannot make it! If this is a customer retention strategy I think it is a silly one - and it is backfiring on their faces. T-Mobile needs to do three things: 1) inform their staff about what is going on and what to say to customers making inquires, 2) put a "coming soon" page on their website ASAP and 3) stop behaving like arrogant, incompetent, stupid, not-a-clue-in-a-million-years bufoons!

What contract is that on? How did you get unlimited data for less than £30? Most of the threads I have read so far seem to suggest that new customers won't get what some of the upgraders have got at Orange.
Thanks

I was told £89 if taken with 18 month combi 30 and web n walk, but could be negotiated to around £50 or £60 depending on spending history.
Tell you the truth, they're probably making it up as they go along, and I would personally insist they match the Orange deal of £39.99 - no more.

That would be my intention, afterall there will be five networks in the UK (T-Mob, Orange, Vodaphone, O2 & 3) all providing the Diamond.
Play them off each other for the best deal.

I have just managed to negotiate the MDA compact IV for free on Flext 30 with WnW along with a 25% retention discount, works out to just over £28pm. You have to work them hard and you'll be able to negotiate. I was told that I can't order the phone today but they save the negotiated bundle on your account for 10 days. Agent told me that they would be accepting orders come Mon/Tue this week so to call back then to take up the offered deal with a view to getting deliveries out by the end of the week. Looks like we may actually be getting somewhere :)

Just spent 45 (yes 45!) minutes on the phone with two different T-Mobile agents. (actually one agent and one supervisor). Both of them referred to their respective bosses to get answers for me. A summary of my questions and their answers:
1. When will Compact IV be available?
"Our computers say it will be soon. It is still under testing."
2. Some of your colleagues are saying that it will be available on Mon/Tue...
"Don't know about that. My computer says 'coming soon'. Doesn't say when."
3. Do you have different computer systems?
"No. It's just one system for the different call centres."
4. So, how come some of your colleagues are already offering deals!?
"That's not possible in T-Mobile. Maybe some other network."
5. How come T-Mobile Germany has been selling Compact IV for 2 weeks and the same PDA is not available in the UK?
"I think the German version is different. Our mobiles are not going to be the same."
6. T-Mobile Germany offers in their Compact IV exactly the same stuff. So, whatever the glitches are in the UK why don't you get info from them?
"I guess the British Compact IV will be different."
7. Are you aware of all your customers leaving in droves for Vodafone and Orange?
"We are still offering the best deals in the marketplace."
8. Well, if the testing doesn't end soon I'll be calling for my PAC.
"No problem, sir."

I wanted the Rapheal on T-Mobile (Vario 4) but this is being delayed from what I was told, in the end I decided to switch to MWg with the Zinc-II, its not here yet but a decent looking unit, no VGA screen, but I don't consider that a big problem - VGA on such a tiny screen isn't going to be much use. And the slightly higher speed internet access would only be available in certain areas.
I did consider the Compact IV but I have missed the fold out keyboard, so it was time to shop around and sadly HTC didn't come up with a device that on paper meets my needs - Mike

Hi,
With tomorrow being another of the Compact IVs d-days I decided today to see what other deals I could get on the Diamond.
I went to Phones4U as they were the only local store with it in stock. However, there were not able to offer anything better than what Orange have online.
Did have a play with the phone and it is nice, I really like the size, basically what I have been looking for from a WinMob for a while.
I also phoned Orange to see if it was possible to get any deals on their £30 tariffs (e.g get the line rental for less as some others on the forums have managed) but unless you are a previous customer they would not budge.
I am a very low user in terms of talk time and text but need the unlimited data. Oranges tariffs don't really suit me for data if I am buying all those texts and minutes and not using them.
So the wait continues for T-Mobile and we will see what they can offer on upgrade or new contracts.

Have a look at the unit I mentioned in the post above yours, it doesn't have VGA but so what and it can be purchased on T-Mobile with Web-n-Walk which is still the best for data in the UK on a flat fee from what I have experianced, otherwise wait until I get it and I will post up what I think of the unit, the current HTC devices are suffering from poor graphics drivers and feel slow in use, whether this is due to the Touch interface I am not too sure, but all I want is a PPC based phone with GPS - time to go back to basics and something that works (I hope) - Mike

some more information:
just spoken to upgrades this morning, and it is now on their system. I have upgraded to the MDA COmpact IV on a Flext 50 for free.
It is showing as out of stock on her system, but she thinks they will be coming in at 'some point' today, so it has been noted on my account, and i will get a call today before 7:30...
so - just got to wait for the stock now!!

I have spoken to them many times over the last few weeks, but today was the first time they offered me prices... the phone still says out of stovk, but i suppose that is better than coming soon.
I suppose it could well be out of stock until the end of august!!

I spoke to the T-mobile upgrade team yesterday and was told that it wouldn't be available until the end of July.
The lady I spoke to, couldn't tell me if that meant that I could pre-order it at the end of July, or if it would be available to purchase at the end of July, or if it would in their shops by then.
However, this was much better than earlier on in the week when I was told that it would be available by August, and the day after I was told that they didn't know anything about it.
Very exciting that you were able to order a unit this morning. I must ring the upgrade team today to see what part of the T-mobile Chinese whispers game the representative has to offer me. Fingers crossed that I get hold of somebody who knows what is going on.

i did say that orange had it avalible now and for £39:99 on a £30 a month contract. which she went to the orange website to confirm, as she didn't think they had released it yet.
she seemed pleasent enough and i think was geniuely trying to be helpfull.

I think we need to sue their poor customer services and i would advice them to work more colabartly in the team and should have team meeting everyday to update eveyone same single info.

Firstly, I'd like to apologise for the delay in replying to you. This is due to the increasing popularity of our email service, and I appreciate your patience.
I'm pleased to hear that you're interested in the Compact IV phone. I understand how important it is to know the services it provides before you buy it.
I'm delighted to tell you that we're looking to release the phone around 18 July. I'm also aware that it will have the WiFi enabled. This information is subject to change at any time."
but i may wait around for a vario 4 since it is under 2mm thicker than my compact 3 and i'll be able to put a memory card in it. nah, i'll probably just get one on a 12 month contract.

The pricing info isn't quite 100%, so they can give you an estimate based on how much the phone costs and how much discount you would get, but this is subject to change. Therefore not everyone will give a price.

Funny i went into my local phones4u branch and played with the diamond they had and bought it on the spot this is the deal i got:-
Phone= free
plan= dolphin 35 with 500mb internet , 600 min cross network and unlimited texts
oh and as they also deal with sky packages i got
my landline transfered to sky and had sky 6mbs broadband added to my sky account all for £10.00 per month saving me about £25-£30
and to top all this they gave my £140,00 cash to walk away with!
what did i payout on the day?
£00.00
wtf????? love it!!!!!!!

I hate to break it to you but if you've been told you've preordered one this isn't the case. You're relying on that person being around when the stock comes in, and they'll then manually place the order.
The Compact IV will be released this week I am told, and I will definately be taking a slice of that initial stock shipment. ;)
I wouldn't blame the agents for not knowing when the delivery will be, this information isn't forthcoming to them.
