I've managed to connect to gprs/edge, but it's very unstable. After 5-10 seconds of using internet connection, phone disconnects from network.
It seems that it depends on the base station or signal strength or somewhat, maybe 3G makes it unstable.
UPD: Currently, I synchronized my contacts, gmail and even installed a pair of applications from market without interruptions of service! It's soooooo exciting!!!

how did you do that ?
I don't know, first of all, in the first half of the day it refused to save my APN settings. When tried to do it at my university, it's just saved and appeared in the list.
I tried to open browser, it loaded the google homepage and then the signal disappeared. This situation happened every time i tried to do something, that required connection. But when I was back at home, I continued my attempts, and suddenly I got the stable internet! But only EDGE, not 3G.

We're not that close to a production version. We have very little power management at the moment, it'll drain the battery really quickly. But we're getting there.
yeah :-) i know that, im just happy that there is a hope at the end of the tunnel.

The reason that data doesn't work is that we're using a RIL (Radio Interface Library) designed for Vogue and Kaiser and there is something that must have changed for Daimond/Raph etc.. I don't have any time to fix this right now but if someone wants to look at it, the source is here:
http://github.com/vilord/android-htc-ril/tree/master
and it goes into this rootfs:
http://github.com/vilord/android-initrd/tree/master
You can replace it in a running system by remounting the rootfs as rw, copying the library to /lib and then killing rild.
Send me any patches you have to this code and I will push it (but try to make sure you don't break vogue/kaiser).
Thanks

On my Diamond data was working fine. I was able to download and install some marketplace programs. Device was working for over 2 hours till I pressed the end call button. Even 3g data connection worked, but was less stable. I managed this with your zImage from 3rd September (and all other files you posted).
I only included ppp.username, ppp.password and ppp.apn in the default.txt and followed this tutorial http://www.androidonhtc.com/setup_data .
Great job so far ;)

Just noticed the screen doesn't turn back on when it goes off, oh well it's still really good :D

So I have a RAPH110 (Fuze).
I threw everything together, patched up a default.txt, and everything booted first try.
The problem? After it boots... pushing Menu (the home key) doesn't unlock it! So I can't go beyond where I am right now.
Something interesting though... at the lock screen, the LCD turns off completely. A push of the left panel keys turns the screen on again. I don't know if the phone is actually going into and coming out of standby, but it is rather interesting.

I'm pretty close to getting WiFi working--the driver now loads (thanks to patches from the Kaiser guys), I found out how to extract the calibration data from the MSM nvram (which I'll probably add to a wiki if I can), and wlan_loader successfully loads everything (although it takes a very long time--I need to bring the updated msm_sdcc (http://git.linuxtogo.org/?p=groups/mobile-linux/kernel.git;a=commit;h=c2a9b4016c5ec23433148913f9d1 4659310896bb) over from the htc-vogue tree).
Right now, I'm figuring out how to get android to use it. Using my own generic build, Android resets when I check the box to turn on wifi. The last logcat message is:
E/WifiHW ( 98): Cannot create "/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf": No such file or directory

I saw somewhere that the next release of android, donut, is apparentlygoing to be too big for the rom on the dream/magic. while this may seem unimportant now, the diamond has the same amount of rom memory as the magic. this means that if/when we build a rom,we need to work out how to boot from an external storage area.

Many devices have BT, WLAN, Camera and anyone can buy a phone for any reason.
My friends girlfriend wanted a ppc so she could look smart and very professional however she already has trouble using her own nokia :p
So i had to spend a good hour teaching her how to use basic features so you see some people just dislike wm and if they have working sms + phone calling / recieving then why not. Android is a very good mobile OS and those features will be implement. Just take a look at the kaiser/vogue progress on android
When those features are implemented is totally another question.

in our case (diam100 device) we have 4GB (The Internal Storage Capacity) to put the Android Rom, so the Rom size will not be a problem.
The Android on our device is a really preliminary version, for the moment the major work todo is writing driver. Not porting android as a real rom.

Can someone with a working data default.txt post it here, i can get the apn settings correctly into my default.txt ><
Hi, I can confirm that DATA is working on diamond. I made it working by trial and error. He are the complete steps for working DATA connection on DIAMOND....
1. Edit the default.txt and change the values according to our network provider for ppp.apn , ppp.username , ppp.password . If ur service provider dont ask for username/password then u can use 'none'
2. Connect data on WM using any application and dont disconnect the DATA. (U can update wheather ....)
3. Now boot into Android. and make setting for APN and save it. Dont worry it will not display in apn but it actually saves ur APN. ( APN will not display in list untill u see E/G symbol near the network strength signal)
4. Now search for network in settings. and manually select your network.
5. Long press the END key and select AIRPLANE mode.. Then again long press the END key off the airplane mode.
6. After a while u will see the E/G symbol near the network strength symbol.. Now your data connection ready to use. You can use any application. I tested andorid market/ syncing mobile/ youtube (audio/video working) net radio etc etc.
HOPE THIS WILL HELP...

When you get the black screen with the little white line in the upper left corner, android is loading. I don't know why, but loading logo doesn't appear.
Sometimes, android freezes in random places (gmaps, wireless setup...). It's why we call this version "unstable". ;)

I'm at work on my phone right now so I don't really have the resources to go back and see if I missed something. I unzipped it to the root of internal storage, changed the atartup.txt to default.txt (don't know why it wasn't named default like usual...) and tried running haret and got that error message. I used the new package by TaC :D http://www.megaupload.com/?d=X9ZACUHF
but with the latest zImage it was unusable so i placed in the good old working version and it worked. Not only did it work the build seems very responsive:)
So far:
For some reason at the notification bar is indicates i have a headset on:confused:
And sound is not being outputted to speaker since it redirecting to audio/usb port:confused:
While playing music the build froze and i had to soft reset my device.
Vibration still works
The build actually isnt very stable at all. Froze many times while trying to access menu.
Guess i'm sticking with your previous pack TaC

Thanks a lot for the new build, it works on my Diamond with the official Traditional Chinese (Taiwan) firmware. :)
It can make/receive calls and play MP3 files, but it seems consumes more battery power than the original OS.
Thanks!
jeffrey
When you say make/recieve calls can the other person hear you on the other end? Does this mean you have a working microphone driver?

I am able to play music... and it is very stable... didn't freeze at all.
I was able to open all apps (like camera) without any freeze.
Sound does work for me. Only disadvantage of this one is the headset notification.
(BTW I use latest zimage)

The last bundle has been tested in Diamond only, i don't know if it works in Raphael.
- To avoid problems, you must delete any data.img in the root, and let the image create a new one.
- Last pack may need 2-3 boots to get to desktop, then it should go more stable.
- With startup.txt, you don't need to hit "run" in Haret. When you start haret, system start loading inmediately.
- Swap isn't needed now, but may be useful with newer kernels.
- Headset icon in notifications bar doesn't mean anything. It is related to image.
- Black screen after "white letters" loading means system is loading. Wait 2-3 minutes before reset.
- Raphael users should try changing only zimage for the older one, errors may be related to the kernel.
Thanks for trying the pack. :)

Just dropping all the files into the internal storage of a diamond should make it work. I just used an old zImage and my default.txt for my RAPH110 (Fuze) and it worked awesome. Data works and everything. It just freezes randomly.
And guys? I found this last night while I was googling around. It's a package for the Vogue that has the Hero's Sense UI.
http://www.redmondpie.com/android-powered-htc-sense-ui-on-windows-phone/
Any chance with some minor changes, we could get THAT booting? :) I threw it on my Fuze. It actually boots with the same zImage I was using. Runs through, does all the boot routines and outputs them to the screen. But where the Android splash screen would pop up, it just sits at a blank black screen. Seems promising, though. :)

Something went wrong with this build and my DIAM100.
Loopt crashes on his own a few minutes after boot.
Not only there's no sound, but launching any application (music player or ring tone config, for example) that uses sound freezes the system.
Many "vital" programs crash too, such as touchscreen callibration.
Are there any log/debug/info I could provide to help you guys solve those problems?

I tried the 090409 build, which isn't Hero themed, but which also doesn't have the android.process.acore bug. It does, however have a really annoying touchscreen problem. Everything under the notification bar activates the notification pop up window, when i move upwards and the notification bar area itself has everything else squeezed into it. o_O
EDIT: must have messed up something when I edited default.txt with my provider's data settings, works now that I changed back to default. How long do you guys think it would be before the data settings would be able to be input from within Android itself?

Hey...something else I noticed...I get a "403 Forbidden" error when trying to access git.linuxtogo.org.
But as it stands right now, todays build from TaC, on the DIAM500 (Sprint CDMA), does not work. After adding the following to the startup.txt:
set RAMSIZE 0x06000000
set ramaddr 0x10000000
It will boot the kernel, get to the system.img, and go to a white screen that flickers black every so often (I'm guessing a message on the console.)
This is the startup.txt I'm using (to keep everything simple):
set RAMSIZE 0x06000000
set RAMADDR 0x10000000
set MTYPE 1805
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set cmdline "msmts_calib=0x81.0x393.0x358.0x7D msmvkeyb_toggle=hide no_console_suspend"
boot
And just to be on the safe side, I tried the RAPH800 mtype (2039), and noticed Tux looked correct. Went back to 1805, and realized the color issue is back.

Just threw that Hero-themed package that came out today onto my RAPH110 (Fuze). Holy awesomeness!
Sound works. Power management works. It can even tell if it's charging via USB!
It's fast, smooth, and I like it. It almost seems like it's running natively. Now I just have to get a better MicroSD card! Class 1 is SLOOOOOOW!
Also how in the hell do you calibrate the f'kin screen? The Calibrate Screen tool is busted.
BTW, Here's my default.txt/startup.txt. I have that clock attribute (clock-7x00.a11=528) added. You might want to remove this. I'm not sure if it's good or bad.
default.txt (It's also attached):
set mtype 1910
set kernel zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set ramsize 0x6000000
set ramaddr 0x10000000
set cmdline "root=/dev/ram0 init=/init console=tty0 mem=76M msmsdcc_id=3 imgdevname=/dev/mmcblk0p1 imgdevnum=1 imgdir=/ msmts_calib=0x6D.0x5D.0x340.0x375 msmvkeyb_toggle=off lcd.density=192 ppp.apn=wap.cingular ppp.username=WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM ppp.password=CINGULAR1 clock-7x00.a11=528"
boot
And I got data to work using these settings on AT&T. Just follow the instructions (Credit goes to amanker for dreaming up this procedure!):
And the APN settings:
Name: AT&T
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: leave blank
Port: leave blank
Username: = WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: leave blank

I can save all setings, and i also get the edge icon showing up. But in intervals. It goes on, and after 10 seconds it goes off. Even in those 10 seconds i can't acess the internet or do anything online. The APN settings do save, and are shown in the APN menu. I set them accordingly to this guide(it's in sloveene, but look only under Si.mobil): http://tabla.mobile.si/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=37578
I have no idea why it won't connect..
The same for me, if you look closer you will see it turn to plane mod alone, every 10 seconds, I don't know more

Do you have the ppp.apn, username, password in your default.txt?
If you followed the guide correctly the GPRS connection should be on always.
How strong is your connection in WM?
If its strong then it should stay on permanantly otherwise you may have dropouts. Keep trying

The link you mentioned is only giving details of APN settings. please use the guide posted in few posts back. and use the APN settings in ur default.txt. If u have problem of E icon vanishing after few seconds then follow the post mentioned in this thread and connect gmap or any application which uses data. I am specifically mentioning gmap because it tries data connection repeatedly. once connection made the icon will not disappear.

Heres my guide on how to get GPRS based on amanker guide. ;)
Just a very detailed and easy guide.
1. Open your default.txt
and add the bolded/underlined lines to your default.txt
set cmdline "root=/dev/ram0 init=/ console=tty0 mem=76M msmsdcc_id=3 zmgdevname=/dev/mmcblk0p1 imgdevnum=1 imgdir=/ msmts_calib=0x7a.0x5e.0x35a.0x37f clock-7x00.a11=528 ppp.apn=3services ppp.username=none ppp.password=none lcd.density=185 msmvkeyb_toggle=off"
boot
(The values of your connection is dependant on which country/service you are with.)
For details on your service check out these sites.
http://www.androidonhtc.com/carrier_network_settings - thanks Oliwan
http://www.flexispy.com/Mobile%20APN%20Setting%20to%20use%20GPRS.htm
http://www.niklaus.co.uk/blog/extras/APN_EN.html -thanks slovoflud
Modify ppp.apn=******* ppp.username=******* ppp.password=******** according to your carrier.
2. Enable your Data connection within WM and make sure its still active when you boot into Haret.
(Notice that your device may now be sluggish due to enabling data connection.)
3.Once your in Android open the program tab and goto Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile networks>Access Point Names
Now press the HW home button and add a new APN.
Enter your details from one of the 3 links above. Once you finished entering all details. press HW home button and save APN.
(Note that you will not be able to see the APN after you saved it. After all the steps in this and you achieve the connection, you then will see the APN details in there) -thanks kailashnj
4. Now goto Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Networks>Network Operators and reselect your carrier.
5. Now go back to the Android Today screen and hold the Call End button and select Airplane mode and wait until you lose the signal.
Once the signal is gone hold the Call End Button and re-enable airplane mode.
At this point it is now just the waiting game.
(Important!!! If you get a connection but it disconnects and connects, its probably due to your location. Try your connection outside or near metropolitan areas. Its not to you not following the guide correctly ;)
Once you see the 'G' icon near the signal status it means you have established a connection and now everytime you load Android it will automatically log onto the GPRS connection.
(You do not have to enable GPRS in WM any further once your connection is setup. Notice that you device may become more unstable and more laggy.)
To turn off and on the GPRS connection open the menu tab and goto Modem program and simply click it on and off. :D Hopefully this is easy to understand.
After awhile the system becomes more stable and fast after multiple reboots.

Hi RationalGaze,
I was talking about google maps.. in case ur G/E icon comes only for few seconds in android, not in WM. So if ur G/E icon is unstable after whole procedure in ANDROID. then as soon as u see G/E icon open google map that will keep trying the connection and your connection will become stable. then u can exit google map.

Wow, good to see this project grow!
DIAM100 just works.
The reaction on the capacitive panel is fun, to see the leds go on where you toch it. Also the scroll wheel is working. Volume control seems to be working just fine too.
I don't really know the Menu key though.
The 3G service is sort of on/off issue. It drops quite often. Google maps is not helping here ;) Also indeeed android is not quite stable, but most of the items just work. Market is fine, GMAIL sync works like a charm.
And wow what a great way to show your email!

Well, no luck with my GPRS. It's still turning on and off. If i go to the modem app, it gives me some interesting information. It DOES connect, it shows me my ip, and in a second or two it disconnects. Tried the GPRS tutorial several times...but with no luck. I'll try runing google maps in android as amanker said. But i don't believe that will work. I'll try to delete all android files, and copy them again and start from scratch. I'll see.
Thanks for all the help Babijoee and amanker (and if i forgot somebody, you're included :) )

4. Go to Settings>Wireless Controls>Mobile Networks>Network Operators - Select manual settings - cannot fine airtel listed only Hutchinson Max and Bpl Mobile (kindly help if any one of you from Mumbai are able to get airtel in the list of network operators.
5. Using the end call button - select airplane mode and then after few minutes come out of the airplane mode. I have tried the step 5 en number of times but never seem to get to the G signal icon.

Hi Kailashnj.
Please do one thing just select the blank line above Hutchinson Max. And it will work. You will see registering to network.. then you will see registered on network.. then come main desktop. and continue rest of the procedure..
and use ppp.username=none and ppp.password=none in your default.txt or startup.txt

Yeah i'm going to update that. The APN does not appear yet. You have to do endcall hold disable then re-enable and once you establish connection you then should be able to see your APN details.

is there any problem with sd card image?
Maybe the partition on your sdcard is an extended partition. I konw mine is and it produces te same error.
At this time android does not boot with an extended partition.
I think we need to clean up the initrd. We should remove the static device creation, and change it back to the automatic creation with mdev -s, which is displayed in the wiki.
i'll post a new one once it is finished.

Same as said before, but with VF parameters.
(Tienes todo el procedimiento bien explicado un par de páginas más atrás, lo único que tienes que hacer es cambiar los parametros "ppp.apn", "ppp.username" y "ppp.password" por los que correspondan aquí a Vodafone)

Hi guys,
first of all I'm very glad about the recent progress. Thanks heaps to all who made this possible and contributed.
Unfortunately the data connectivity has not worked for me (yet).
I think I followed (multiple times) the data/3G setup guides pretty well. And I do get the little G or 3G symbol.
But I won't get a stable connection:
The G/3G symbol randomly disappears, sometimes together with the normal network connectivity bars.
Then I cannot even make/receive a call.
The modem applet (sometimes) gives me details about my IP address etc.
When I ping my phone's IP address then I also get results. Actually, I can see from the ping results whether or not the little G/3G symbol is "on".
If the phone is off or in airplane mode or the data connection has not been established yet,
then I get "...Time to live exceeded" to my pings or no result to pings at all.
If the phone is on and the data connection is established (according to the little G/3G symbol),
then I get something like "...icmp_seq=185 ttl=126 time=103 ms" (sometimes much higher roundtrip times though).
This behaviour is kind of consistent with what happens under WM when trying the same things.
Has anyone got any ideas? Maybe I'm doing something wrong here?
Is it perhaps hardware specific? I've got a DIAM300, RadioROM 1.08.25.20.
asticinzano
7th September 2009, 03:47 PM
Just out of pure speculation I'd say it has to do something with HSDPA and/or the radio rom you use.
My connection in android was rather stable with 1.09.25.23. Then I upgraded to 1.13.25.24 which offers much better signal strenght and therefore better HSDPA reception. But it's rather flaky with android.
When I remeber correctly HSDPA wasn't really fun to use with older radio roms on windows mobile, too. So I suppose HSDPA handling isn't so easy after all.

No luck with the 1.09.25.23 also. Now the edge icon is on constantly, and modem app says it's connected. But browser doesn't load any page, i can't sign in with a google account and if i ping my phone IP from my computer i get a 100% loss.
What radio are you guys using (ones that have a working gprs on diam100)?

Hmmm maybe trying different locations of your house. Or try to go metrolpolitan areas. As my house is near the city i got a constant stable connection. no dropouts. Then i drive to my friends house which has poor coverage and even bad reception for phone calls and my connection was connecting and dropping every 5 seconds.
Although it could be your radio version too. Trial and error i guess :(

My internet is working fine and I have been able to login to the gmail.
Only problem that I have is the battery usage which is very high and hence still cannot move out of WM.
Battery does not charge if you are in Android and have not started charging while in wm.
But still overall very satisfied with the everything, Thanks a lot TAC, DZo and all others who are working hard to port Android to Diamond.
