i got this free carjack to usb adapter and i tried charging my tilt in my car with the cord that plugs into the computer.

well as soon as i plugged my phone in it turned off and i couldnt turn it back on via the power button.

after a few different combinations of removing the battery and reinstalling it and soft resets it now works... but not as it should. i try charging it and the battery doesnt gain any juice and when i unplug it it still thinks its charging. so at the moment i have about 30% battery left and i took it out so if need be i can do a hard reset on the phone, because it does turn on now.

does anyone have any idea what went wrong and if my phone is alright?

i have fairly standard software upgrades i can try to list if it is needed

You might have fried your charging hardware inside the phone, which as far as I know is not covered by warranty. The problem is that many free carjack to usb converters are of very poor quality and either don't give the right voltage (5 Vdc) or the right current (minimal 1 Amp necessary for Tilt/Kaiser while free chargers usually only give 0.4 or 0.5 Amps). Please use only quality brandname chargers inside the car. These cost only 20 buck max which is nothing compared to the phone-replacement.
Note: I use a carcharger from Garmin which came with my bluetooth Garmin Mobile XT receiver and so far no problems.

Well, if the hardware in your phone is busted, then you're screwed. Check your warranty if it's covered but I guess not since it states that only HTC aproved accessories may be used and I don't think your free Carjack-USB converter is approved.

Or you could go to Squaretrade.com , purchase a warranty , and then process a claim shortly after (1 month). I use squaretrade, never had to process a claim but at least I have piece of mind.

..same here I have Square Trade for my Kaiser and other things. Used it once for a camera problem with no hassles. This could help after as mentioned 1 month membership has gone by. I purchased accidental damage protection too... it has to be new and less than 1 month old to qualify for ADP. ADP covers your butt for any problems.
If your lucky maybe only the battery got damaged, like the overheat/overcharge circuity inside the battery, I am guessing it has that inside the battery pack..and at least on my Kaiser without the battery installed and the phone plugged in it wont even turn on to test without a battery. In any case I wish you good luck with that, I've seen other peeps here that had the same problem, do a search of this forum and see if they had any luck.

Just call att and act like you don't know anything. Explain whats going on with it right now and not that you plugged into some random thing.
