View Full Version : Getting Tomtom 7 / tt7 to work LEGALLY

Having found and read the threads I can on the subject, I want to install Tomtom 7 (tt7) on my Diamond (I purchased the phone whilst on a trip to HK and it didn't have it installed), and to hook it up to Tomtom Home on my pc to purchase maps over and above the taster maps.
I've loaded the application cab from a thread on the Kaiser forum (which most people seem to agree is not Warez), and downloaded TT home 2.3 from the tomtom website. Have got the free taster map, but now want to buy more maps. However, I don't seem to be able to get Home to talk to my device.
From reading the threads, it's suggested to move the application from "Intern Gegeugen" (where it installs), to the Program Files folder. However, doing this breaks all the shortcuts.
Can anyone either provide a cab for the application that installs to the right place, or give me some step by step pointers how to get it all working? Would really appreciate the help!
Oh - and should anyone from Tomtom chance upon this post, the sooner you get your website and Home explicitly working for TT7, the faster I'm sure people like me would actually be buying your products- seems you've done the hard part of actually developing the software, just not making it easy for people to buy it right now!

That's interesting about moving the install folder... I haven't tried that. What I did do though was to uninstall Home 2.3 as I encountered the same problem and install Home Navigator 1.5. From there, you can just purchase maps of your choice. You need to link the device to a 'GO' device as they are the only models using version 7 software.
Hope this helps

Place the contents of "Intern Gegeugen" into My Device/Program Files/Navigator on the Diamond. Connect via Activeynch and finf TomTom Navigator.exe in the above folder. Right click, choose create shortcut and paste that shortcut in My Device/Windows/Start Menu/Programs and rename it accordingly.

And after that you can connect with tomtom home 2.3 (for PDA). First you choose your memory location, get an error, go back and your device is connect.

I've just given that a go and moved the install onto the internal storage. It all still seems to work ok. One question though, other than free up the main memory are there any advantages/disadvantages to running the app from internal storage? (i.e. does it run slower from internal storage etc)

I find if you install TomTom 7 on the internal storage, TomTom home 2.3 comes up with an error, installing it the the internal memory TomTom home picks it up fine.

Only TT home 1.5 is compatible with Navigator.
What I did was upgrade my TT6 maps to the latest then using TT home transfered the maps to the device and installed TT 7 after. works well

I changed TT6 into TT7 and I could use the same maps. All is working fine.
One question:
TT7 does not get a fix, when phone is not on. I found it today, when I use Tomtom in a car about 10 minutes. I stopped and turned phone on, so Navigator 7 got the fix easily.
I have not agps on.
In Artemis I did not find this kind of symtom with Navigator 6.

I am not really a big user of SatNav as I read the signs on the road.
However, I am a lover of toys and have always kept a copy of tomtom nearby for fun.
I installed the XDA linked TT7.cab file (11.9mb) and directed it to Internal Storage.
Then I went online and created myself a tomtom account. I went through the maps purchase wizard stating my device was a GO 720 model.
I then purchased the 7.2 Great Britain and NI Map. £29.95 - even by my standards a bargain.
I then downloaded Home 2.3 and connected my Diamond as a disk system.
When the Diamond came up it challenged me to select the location of my product and I chose Internal Storage. It then promptly through up an error message.
I did a back and continued. When I went to MAPS etc it didn't find my map. So I clicked on the Update Pocket PC icon and there was my map.
It didn't take long to download and install (161 MB ish) and now I have a working TT7 with the 7.2 map.
I could also update the Pocket PC with free voices and POI's too from the TomTom website (although I have forgotten the steps just now).
The advantage is that I have a working, reliable, sexy, copy of Tomtom 7.
The negative is that I don't seem to be able to use MAP share. This is not a big deal for me (as I never actually use Sat Nav anyway!). It didn't seem to matter once I had bought the map what I set the device to be - PDA or GO 720.
I hope that this is useful as a legitimate way of getting Tomtom 7 onto your Diamonds...and all for £29.95.
I have done this twice - once for me to play and once for the missus to actually use.
Not a bit of Warez anywhere - for 30 quid why bother with Warez?
All the best,
Sam.

No it's not a case of have they caught on. TomTom 7 the application on a PDA is not supported on TOMTOM Home 2.3. You need to use 1.5 . This is beacause at the moment only PNA devices are supported on 2.3
The Maps which you purchace to activate with your device to make the application work have not been released yet for PDA so you have to use backwardly compatible maps . 6.75 etc until you can purchase ver 7 maps
As for Warez the licenceing is with the maps only and not the application which is available to download from TomTom . If you was to load hacked Maps then this is WAREZ as the Licence is with the maps. You can only use your brought maps with one device and that is the device you purchaced it for. Hence you get the activation number from your device as it is device specific.
You cannot if you purchased maps already from a different device use them on another device . This is the License law and you need to purchase new maps every time you cahnge device . You can email TomTom support but they will tell you the same thing.

The 30 price reduction is not for Navigator user as I found out last month.
As for only using the Maps for one device (true in a sense) though I managed to activate via TT home my maps twice on my Trintiy (as the Device ID changed once when I flashed an early ROM and activiate the same product code again for my Diamond - which is indicated on the TTcode website as three activations.
I have purchase new 6.75 maps for my Navigator 6 and know these will work on version 7 once on general release.

Has anyone got version 7.450 to work with the version 7.2 europe maps which can be downloaded from the tomtom navigator by selecting the 02 xda diamond?
I have managed to buy the map and get it onto the device (had to copy it manually) but it won't activate. There is an activate_map_50187 file in the map package but when you try to run it, it doesnt work. Its a zip file when on the pc, can I just unzip the .meta.dct file to the device?

I have officially asked for support at tomtom the Navigator 7 is only supported by TomTom home 2.3. I have bought the o2-xda map and installed the maps successfully but i am experiencing the same problem as you:
I get an error reaconizing my "device" and tomtom home doenst show that it is installed on your device or cant show what is installed on your device.
Why?
Because you are using version 7.450 (9028)
Official answer form Tomtom is that the only support version:
TomTom Navigator 7 7.450 (9029) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thus the 9029 is the official verison and should work with TomTom home 2.3
Does anyone heve this version or where can i purchase it?
Thanks!

The TomTom home application is NOT the problem.
Its the version of TomTom navigator software you are using on your diamond:
it should be TomTom Verison 7 7.450 (9029) instead of the widely spread (9028) version.
So the questions: How can we get the official version?

For those of us in the US, I have a question about TomTom's upgrade policy.
Do any of you know if I were to buy maps today for V.6 included with the TyTNII, if they'll upgrade me to the V.7 maps when they're released (presumably) within the next coming few months?

Tomtom's Site is the best place for this. But I purused the site yesterday. They now offer a 30 day upgrade policy. So I guess you wouldl have to be specific in your timing of the purchase.

just tested TomTom7 on freeway, without TTS (dont say which freeway) is a turn off for me!
"exit on the right" -lots of time the freeway is split up like 101N or 101S. if u dont say the damn freeway name, how do u know which freeway to take?
yeah, you can look at the screen everytime u going to enter a new freeway! cus it wont tell you which freeway to take!
but on iguidance v4.0 and igo8, i can keep my eyes on the road and not keep looking at the screen!
on iguidance v4.0 -"take the freeway exit and take freeway 101N"
igo8 -"exit the freeway and take San Francisco"
without TTS, it' a few steps backwards!

I don't think there is an official "upgrade" to the 9029 version. I can read a bit of german so im trying point you in the right direction. If you look at the tomtom site. This is the only one to advertise Navigator 7. See link:
http://www.tomtom.com/products/category.php?ID=2&Lid=3
(If it doesnt work trying choosing the german language first)
Im Einzelhandel erhältlich = In the retail sector available. (Sold in stores)
And if you ask me you don't get the software. It is already on (ROM cooked) or directly put on certain PDA's or phones.
Im just think possiblities ... taking in regard that the navigator 7 software is possibly NOT sold as an seperate product ... what is legally possible? ....
I can help you with the german.... if you have the contacts to possibly extract the official verison

Using TT 7 9028 on Diamond. I like the one map that I was given and bought US maps. They are in my account. Maps show up on home (2.3.1.92). It sees the device and allows to to pick internal memory or internal storage. When "upgrade" get
Error during scanning for navigation items. Trying to scan a volume that does not exist \\201D3F2-F1AB-C8E5-E81D-68C9401C458\\Program Files\Navigator\
If I ignore "report error" and click "back" I see the maps puchased with the message that "this item cannot be installed to your device" in red. I also see many voices that will download and install correctly.
TT support says home 2.3 is the only version of home that recognizes TT 7. They say there is no way to download maps except through home.
In my account it now shows that my Diamond is a Navigator 7 device and has pulled in the correct Device code from the device.
I am hopeful this information will help. I really want to use the maps.

Tom, I think the reason you're having trouble is that you're using v.6x maps with v.7 of the application. It's my understanding that the v.6 maps are not compatable with the new application code. Are you SURE you purchased v.7 maps of the US? All I see are maps for Europe at this time.

Bill,
I used a suggestion from the forum to give the device as Go 720 at the time of purchase. That allowed me to purchase US 7.2 maps. The problem is that the software engine in Home does not recognize my device and will not download them. If I can figure out how to download them they should work. I am wondering if the build (9028) I am using is blocking download? There seems to be a 9029 build somewhere for Navigator 7 but I can not find it.
Thanks

Hi tbones,
maybe your problem is not the usage of the build 9028.
I have the build 9028 too and I bought yesterday the western europe map.
I could download the map by TomTom Home 2.3 and I can transfer it to the memory of the Diamond.
Unfortunally I can not tell you if the prozess of transfering is successful. The transfer stop everytime I try after 15-40min with a message "loss of connection". In ActiveSync the Connection get lost too.
I think this is a problem of ActivSync :-(
Does anybody has an idea how I can get it done manually? Like mounting the Diamond as "mass storage device" and copying the files to the "card".

I read somewhere else that 9030 and mapshare don't work either.
Beter who can confirm that 9029 enabled mapshare?
Or do we have to wait till Tomtom delivers a new version of tomtom home?

And you get a screen telling about the Tomtom version, GPS version and Map version you are using.

Hi bones,
The reason why your getting this error is because you installed ttn7.cab with version 7.450 (9028). This doesn't give you the option where to install the navigator software. Probably on your device (phone or pda) it has installed in to directory "\interne geheugen\navigator" (or locate where it has installed). By default the TomTom software looks for the navigator software in the location "Program Files\Navigator" on your device.
Solution:
Copy the the directory "\interne geheugen\navigator" to "Program Files\Navigator". Connect your device to your computer. Restart your TomTom home on your computer.
That should do the trick!
(Its all trial and error)

Here's what works for me here in the US. Running Version 7.450 (9028).
Connect Diamond using ActiveSync mode, not "Disk Drive" mode.
TomTom Home 1.5 recognizes the Diamond, allows me to purchase Version 6.75 maps and installs them correctly in the device. They seem to work without trouble, but are obviously not the most current maps.
TomTom Home 2.3 recognizes the maps installed on the Diamond. It allows me to download and install everything *except for maps* (e.g. color schemes, voices).
I have found no way to get version 7 maps. Once I get hold of the 9029 or 9030 build, I'll let people know if this changes.

Hi eldub2000,
I am not sure to understand all the steps you followed to add a new map to TT7 using Tomtom HOME 2.3. Here is what I did:
- I login on my Tomtom account on the Tomtom web site (I already have an account since I bought, a few years ago, TT6 with Western Europe maps on DVD);
- I purchased a new map (Western Europe v7.20, O2 XDA Diamond edition);
- then, I connected the Diamond to Tomtom HOME 2.3 via Active Sync and I allowed the software to login to my Tomtom account;
- I was not very happy since the newly purchased map did not appear in the list of the available maps when I selected "Add maps, Traffic, Voices, etc.";
- BUT I clicked the "Update my Tomtom" icon (on the 1st page of the main menu)... and my new map was ready to be downloaded to the PC and to be installed on the Diamond.
I was happy again ;-)
I must admit I did not RTFM... so I was thinking to find the map I purchased in the list of available maps... this is not the way it works.
I am using Tomtom v7.450.9028, downloaded from a link included in a message of this forum, and it is working fine with the newly purchased map. I suspect there is no need for .9029 or .9030 version of TT 7.450 (but they may improve .9028).
Hope this helps!
Regards.

TT Navigator 7.450 build 9030 don't give mapshare options either.
Build #9030 is also floating around on the net. But has the same issues with TTHome as build #9028 with downloading the map and doesn't give you mapshare options either.

Hi eldub2000,
Cool. I'm trying to get the US maps, but I haven't found a way to get anything but the 6.75 maps here in the US.
I read in this forum and on other sites pointed to by Google, that some users were successful in using 6.75 maps for TT6 or 7.20 maps for other devices. Some people are saying that these solutions are less "official" / supported by Tomtom or illegal. Please, have a look at what these users are saying (search the forum for title containing "tomtom", there are not too much threads.)
I was not able to test 6.75 maps because the old version of TT6 Western Europe for which I have a license features 6.5x maps :-(
Carefully selected 7.20 maps should work since the free map I was allowed to download by TT7 is a 7.15 map and is not available at the map store.

This may be old news but it is possible to get map corrections working with TT7 and TT Home 2.3.
As ritchymad mentioned the trick is to install the files to Device memory not Internal Storage.
The version I found which allows specifying where to install is
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=ZYPQQKBR
Once I'd installed that, I could start TT Home, select Internal Storage at teh start screen and TT Home would load up without the "trying to scan a volume that does not exist" error
I was then able to d/l and install the Western Europe map I'd bought through the TT website and set up and download the map corrections.
It's pretty straightforward once you know what you are doing but why TT are making it this difficult for people who want to give them money I don't understand.

I have Installed TomTom to the Device of My Orange SPVM5000 PDA WM 6.1 but I can get TomTom Home 2 to see my Device I have got Microsoft ActiveSync 5.5 and that connects OK.
I bought Western Europe Map and at the moment I can not get that Installed.
So please can you tell me why it is not working? and hot to get it to work?
Many Thanks for any Information/Help

On a Mac here... to get TT Home (1.5) to work, I had to mount the Diamond as Hard Disk.
TT Home then sees the device.

Hi,
Sorry, I just bought my diamond. Anyone knows if Tomtom v7.450.9028 will work with Tomtom Home 2.5 as I cant find Tomtom Home 2.3 in Tomtom website anymore and would like to buy a map from the website.
Thanks.

the latest official release of tomtom is 7.910 and is downloadable in my sig.
This works fine with Home 2.5 when connected via activesync.

Thanks danny. I will download from your sig. Another couple questions (sorry I am noob here):
-by downloading tomtom 7.910.9185 into my diamond, will Home 2.5 allow me to purchase and download map into my diamond (internal storage)? Can I download tomtom 7.910.9185 into internal storage?
- is there any trick to download map and make tomtom 7.910 worked (such tricks as mentioned in previous threads)?
Thanks.

I'd like to say a big thanks to everyone on this forum who helped me get Navigator 7 with westester Europe maps working on my Orange UK Diamond.
I thought it might help people if I summarise the steps I went through to get it working:
1. Downloaded Navigator 7 from a link I found on a forum
2. Purchased the western europe map on the TomTom site and downloaded TomTom home 2.5
3. I chose Internal Storage in Home as that is where I had installed Navigator7
4. This is where the problems started. The map wasn't showing in the available maps section or in the update PDA section.
5. After reading this forum I moved the Navigator directory from the internal storage to the program files directory in the internal memory (after deleting some stuff to make room)
6. Tomtom Home seemed to work much better with it moved here, but I still had an issue of the map not showing up. So I downloaded an update of the HTC software that Home recommends. This upgraded the Navigator software to 7.910 (9185). This upgrade wouldn't work when it was in the internal storage, it gave me an error about it not being digitally signed. So if you get that error, move it to the internal memory.
7. After the upgrade my map showed in TomTom home, but it complained that there isn't enough room on my internal memory, and it didn't give me the option to use my internal storage.
8. So I disconnected from Home, moved the navigator software back to the internal storage and connected again but chose the internal storage in the Select Device box.
9. Now the map showed up (presumibly because I'd copied the updated Navigator software from my internal memory) and I had enough room to install the map!
10. Then I justinstalled it, started the software on my diamond, went to preferences > Manage maps and then changed my map to the new one.
So I didn't have to bother changing shortcuts because I only temporarily moved the directory to get it upgraded and then moved it back.
I hope this helps those who (like me) are a little less technical than some on this forum.
Thanks
David

Thanks David. Would you be able to confirm the following:
- in step 2, can you buy tomtom map without first downloading tomtom home 2.5 (sorry I never use tomtom before)?
- in step 5, did you move the whole Navigator folder into My Device/Program Files so no Navigator folder left in Internal Storage/Program Files?
Thanks again.

Found this in the Kaiser section. It's working for me:)
Good news, TomTom Home is finally downloading the GO 720 map I bought over the weekend for my Kaiser. Here's what I did...
TomTom Home v2.3 seems to be nothing more than a FireFox browser running javascript files located in "C:\Program Files\TomTom HOME 2\xul\chrome\tthome.jar" on my machine. The JAR file is really a ZIP, so I opened it and after some searching, found two changes you need to make. Modify the file "\content\logic\model\ttNavItem.js" (in the jar) so that the functions canInstallOn() and canUseOnThisDevice() both return zero. Put the file back in the jar and run TomTom Home.
I was able to download my purchased map, but the install failed with some "The map is not compatible with your device" error. The great news is that now I have the map on my PC in the "C:\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Download\map" directory.
I haven't gotten to attempt the actual install, but I'm feeling pretty good about finally having the $80 map I paid for on my hard disk.
I hope this helps.

Just finished installing a map of Western Europe (version 8.15) that I bought on TomTom.com
This is what i did:
1. I bought a map on TomTom.com. First I had to select a product (Navigator 7) and then a device. As device i choose a Touch Pro (i own a trinity, had to pick one)
2. then i installed the latest version of TomTom 7 on my device. I found two versions:
http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/navcore_7.910.9185_TT_SIGNED.htc_raphael.cab
http://download.tomtom.com/sweet/navcore/navcore_7.910.9185_TT_SIGNED.htc_diamond.cab
I used the raphael version because earlier i bought a map for the touch pro (don't know if it matters)
If you unpack this cab you will find the actual ttn.cab file that you can use to install on your device (I used total commander to unpack the navcore_7.910.9185_TT_SIGNED.htc_raphael.cab file and extract the ttn.cab file)
Copy and install the ttn.cab file on your device.
3. Rename C:\Program Files\TomTom HOME 2\xul\chrome\tthome.jar to tthome.zip.
4. Extract tthome.zip\content\logic\model\ttNavItem.js
5. Make the changes to ttNavItem.js so that it will always return 0. To do so modify the "return 1", "return 2", "return 3", "return 4", "return 5" and "return 6" entries to "return 0". I used Notepad for that. Here is what your ttNavItem.js should look like (just the section you have to edit)
canInstallOn : function(device)
{
assert(device, "device must not be null");
if (this._drm && !this._drmNeedsKey)
{
if (device.deviceCode != this._drmDeviceCode)
return 0;
}
if (this._capabilities)
{
for each (var capability in this._capabilities)
{
if (!device.hasCapability(capability))
return 0;
}
}
else if (this._targetModels)
{
if ( ! (device.model.id in this._targetModels))
return 0;
}
if (this.locationType != 1 && this.size)
{
var safeSize = this.size + 15000000;
if (safeSize > gApplication.deviceManager.activeInstallLocation.s izeInBytesTotal &&
!gApplication.deviceManager.activeDevice.hasCapabi lity("SDSlot"))
{
return 0;
}
}
if (this.locationType == 2 || this.locationType == 3)
{
var reason = this._dll.isInstallableOnDevice(device.id);
if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kInstallable)
return 0;
else if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kDRMDeviceMismatch)
return 0;
else if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kDeviceTypeNotSupported)
return 0;
else if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kNavCoreVersionTooLow)
return 0;
else if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kIncompatibleTTSEngine)
return 0;
else
return 0;
}
return 0;
},
canUseOnThisDevice : function()
{
assert(this.locationType == 1, "item must be located on device");
var reason = this._dll.isUsableOnDevice();
assert(reason != CI.ttIItem.kNotADeviceItem, "locationType is 'on device' but DLL claims the item is not on device");
if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kUsable)
return 0;
else if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kNotUsableDRMCertificateMissing)
return 0;
else if (reason == CI.ttIItem.kIncompatibleTTSEngine)
return 0;
else
return 0;
},
6. Repack your edited ttNavItem.js in the tthome.zip and rename back to tthome.jar.
7. Connect your device and start TomTom Home. Check for updates for your device. you now should see your map and should be able to download it
8. After download you get an error that your map cannot be installed to your device.
9. your map should be downloaded to My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\map\
There should be a zip containing the map and also a cab containing the activation file.
10. On your storage card create a folder for your map. Don't know if the name can be random so i used the name of the map.
11. Extract the files from the cab and the zip to the folder you just created on your device. Maybe you have to extract the to a local folder first and copy it to your device afterward.
12. Start TomTom on your device and navigate to Change Preferences -> Manage Maps -> Switch Map. You should be able to choose your new map.
After this you should have your new map working.
good luck;)

Thanks to everyone in this forum. I manage to get tomtom working on my diamond and purchase map. Everything is working. However, I have one question:
- at the moment I have navigator installed under My Device> Program Files (default installed location when running tomtom cab); I have also copied the same navigator folder to Internal Storage (root);
- I like to save storage capacity in main memory so I deleted navigator under My Device> Program Files (keep the one under Internal Storage). However when I run tomtom from Start>Program>Tomtom icon, it does not work (message saying I cant recognise tomtom because it is unauthorised ...);
- Is there a way to create a shortcut icon (under Start>Program) for navigator installed in Internal Storage so it will be authorised and i can delete navigator under My Device> Program Files? This will enable me to save precious storage space in main memory.
Thanks in advance.
