Can anyone tell me how to turn of the 3g function on my diamond, i know it saves alot of battery power...

Go to settings, phone, band and select "GSM" on the top input.
The download Advanced config (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=317070) and use it to set "Enable grps auto attach" to disabled.

You could also try installing Navdavi CommManager
