First of all you need to make sure that you have the latest version of Active Sync.

then follow one of the Wiki Guides

I am using this Rom and have had no problems

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=403421

Also what Radio version Etc do you have

Uninstall and re-install active sync (V4.5)

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/activesync45.mspx

Also make sure that yo have set it to connect.

I had to hard reset

Hold power and push pointer into bottom of device

This site should also have some pointers

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/synchronize/device-synch.mspx

Let me know how you get on..

Just thought,

have you added a EXT ROM package ie - one with office and some other programmes

I added one from another user (not ROM Cooker) and had similar problems.

I have double checked and I am wrong, you canot upgrade ROM via SD Card.

Try switching your USB socket and updating drivers.

I wil look and see if there are any other solutions

I lie there is a way

1. Woking blue angel (with WM2003)
2. You need mtty
3. SD Card at least 64MB

Open mtty, put sd card in
Type:

Code:
USB>d2s 70020000 1060000 sd

MTTY is some kind of terminal emulation software, and in this case it is used to communicate to serial and/or USB enabled devices. On the HTC devices (including the Universal) it enables you to issue a selection of commands that allow you to read the status of som eof the components, to clear the bootloader flags, to format the internal flashdisk etc etc
