View Full Version : GPS route recording software?

Is there any software that will use the GPS to automatically keep a log of journeys?

I don't particularly need details of where I've been but it would be really useful to be able to keep track of times of journeys and distances travelled.

I believe Navigon can keep logs but I don't have that and don't particularly want to change my satnav software just to get that function.

What I'm looking for is something that I can just click on to start recording and that will put the start date and time and the total mileage travelled into either a text file or preferably an Excel sheet.

Does anyone know of anything that will do the job for me?

I've looked all over but the only things I can find either require a monthly subscription or do lots of stuff I don't need. I don't want maps and I particularly don't want it to have to have an online connection.

GPS Tuner (www.gpstuner.com), Vito navigator (http://vitotechnology.com/en/products/navigatorii.html), Ozi explorer (www.oziexplorer.com). All these softwares allow you to record your movements and displays them as a route, record mileage etc..

You wont need a data plan or monthly subscription for any of these, but you do need to buy the software.

Even better when you purchase the full version as you can load google maps as overlay ...

CoPilot 7 keeps GPS tracks & will let you upload them to their web site to improve their map data.

odgps http://www.outdoor-gps.de/ will do as well. It's free, but you can donate for it, but it runs without registration, but it will remind you to donate if you use it for a while but you don't have to. (for sure map overlay would be a fine thingy, but it works for me as is)

http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ on this site you can draw your results interactively onto maps.google.com, should work with other software as well...

besides gpsvisualizer works with wififofum as well and will display every wlan in an other color and displays from where you've got reception to every AP (with autosave-on-gps-file but it works with saved files as well)...

Thanks for the input guys.

I've looked at all of those and they really do much more than I need. I don't want mapping or anything like that. All I want is really something like a trip counter that will put the start time, distance travelled and end time into a file to export to Excel. Click at the start and the end of the journey sort of thing.
I did find one product that did pretty much exactly what I wanted but it stored the data on their server and they wanted a monthly subscription for it.

Thanks. I've just downloaded and tested Trackr. It's all great apart from the fact that I can only download the track as a Google Earth file. I need to have it as at least a text document or preferably as an Excel file.

GPSdash 2. Very simple to use, not to many buttons/features, map option available if you want it (I never use it), and features exactly what you want.

Simply open the app, select connect to fire up the GPS and get a fix, then select Create Log and enter a file name. The associated Map Manager software allows you to convert the resulting log into CSV or Google Earth format.

Try it, you'll thank me...

I can't get it to run on my stock 6.1 Kaiser. Complains about NF3.5 but that works OK with Trackme and other apps that need CF 3.5

Strange, it works fine on my stock Kaiser 6.0...

Pardon my ignorance, but what's NF3.5?
