View Full Version : Losing your Activesync connections? possible solution

I've flashed many ROMs from many chefs, so (for me) I think this was more of an issue on my PC (ie. this is not a ROM bug)
I've got:
- Windows XP
- SP2
- fully doctored/multilated by corporate IT installing who knows what modifications to meet their security concerns
what I would see is that my Activesync connection would drop at seemingly random times.. sometimes I'd stay connected for hours, sometimes only minutes.
Sometimes I could just unplug/replug and it would re-connect. Other times it seemed to crash something running on the PC and I'd have to reboot, and often the reboot was not clean (since some driver crashed/hung)
My solution? most ROMs seem to have
Settings->Connections->USB-to-PC->Advanced Network Functionality
on... I turned it off. I haven't had a random disconnect, nor PC crash, in over a week now.

Definately a good thing to know though.. and you dont have to search through lots of posts to find it - yet

This has been a bug in WM6.0 too. I always have to uncheck that in order to sync with the work pc. Never had any issues with home pc though!

Unfortunately, I'm finding that with the 20270 based ROMS (CRC 12.4 and PDA Corner V16), I can no longer use Activesync when I un-check the box. I get the error message:Connection Not Valid:
Cannot open the connection '`57600 Default'. This connection is no longer valid or does not exist. Select a different connection and try again.
So in order to use these ROMs I have to leave the setting checked and now am losing AS connections randomly and hosing up my desktop PC :( I have not been able to convince either chef to look into it much.

Please don't think I haven't both soft-reset the PPC and rebooted the PC. It does not the problem for those of us that have it.

Bug?.. I'm not sure... seems like a FEATURE :)
The same situation: under W2k (at work) preferable is uncheking, but at home (XP SP3) - works with on-checked without any problems.

No worries.. I realize this is not a problem that affects many people, since most folks are ok to leave Advanced enabled, and its more important to fix the bugs that affect more people... (and chef's have to have a life too)
I think I have found a solution: from http://www.xdaflameusers.com/viewtopic.php?pid=6202#p6202
change
HKCU\ControlPanel\Comm\Cnct = `57600 Default (string)
to
HKCU\ControlPanel\Comm\Cnct = `USB (string)
EDIT: I found another post suggesting to not use a `.. but the ` seems to work for me.. so try it both ways if it still gives anyone trouble.
Now it seems to work.

Interesting... in my ROM "`USB" is already by default!

Same here, but I did have trouble using AS with the advanced mode turned off. At least the first sync anyway. I turned advanced mode back off and now it seems to be working fine. Odd!

Interesting... in my ROM "`USB" is already by default!
I only started getting the AS error message with the 20270 ROMs that came out recently (when I unchecked the "Enable Advanced Network Functionality" box.. as I had been doing on all recent ROMs)
So my original hint (to uncheck the box) broke on these ROMs (for me)
I could always check the box and AS, but that was not stable (for me). I did try and doind several syncs and then unchecking the box to see if it would work then, but it would not.
What error message do you guys get on the PPC when AS fails?

Update, the "fix" (in post #10) allows me to A-S With ANF disabled, but I am losing my connection now (after random periods), just as I do when ANF is enabled :(
just something wonky about these 20270 ROMs in this particular area.

IIRC, none - simple AS get disconnected.

IIRC, none - simple AS get disconnected.
So there are 2 problems that I mixed in to this thread
a) folks get random disconnects when using ANF for AS. The 'fix' for this was to disable ANF. For ROMs previous to 20270 this cured all my ills. I got a rock solid AS connection that never dropped randomly and did not make my PC cross-its-eyes as would happen when AS dropped when ANF was enabled.
b) but with ROM 20270, the 'fix' for a) stopped working. When I disabled Advanced Network Functionality, I got the error message about 57600 default... the only way I could AS was to leave ANF enabled. A partial 'fix' for this was to make the registry change. However I am finding that while it will allow me to AS when ANF disabled, this connection will randomly disconnect... tho so far it may not make my PC quite as wonky when it does.
Hope that summarizes things at least from my end.

Sounds great!. (but no rush for me.. I'll be out of town for the weekend and don't want to flash while on the road)

Some little questions...
1) What are these modifications?
2) What are these registry settings (from raphael)? Share please.
3) Connection is stable using W2k on BB? (using XP here is no problem - by me :) )
In addition to problems by zim2dive:
- possible reason is wrong registry key (`57600) in ROMs, that are inaccurate ported from other devices.
And - chiao! Next week I'll be on vacations and completely without Internet! :p
