View Full Version : Orange Diamond Stock

As I am an employee of Orange I thought I would let you know...

We got an email to day to say there are 3000 handsets "in testing" at the moment, it might not be until August that Online Sales, Phone Sales and Stores will see these handsets. By then they will be Orange Branded.

I would take "in testing" to mean they are putting their own version / skin on the TF3D...um NO!

There was ONLY 413 handsets delivered to ONLY the top 100 stores so thats why they will be hard to find if there are any left. These lucky ones where the "Generic" ones.

I was just lucky I was working the day they where delivered to our store and I got my hands on mine or else I still wouldn't have one...No handset charge, £21 per month, 600mins 2000 texts, 250Mb internet bundle, and Free Insurance.
I work in a top 100 store and we only got 4, I bought mine and we sold the other three in 2 days.... We now have waiting list of about 25 people.... deep joy!

Oh! And from what I have been able to gather from speaking to our Tech Support team Orange's HSDPA coverage is pretty much non-existant unless you are in London and you are sitting on-top of a radio mast, so you may aswell switch it off.

I am finding some funny issues with mine at the moment though....

If I receive 2 text messages one after another (within 30 secs of each other) then the phone vibrates constantly until I take the battery out....anyone else had this?

Also, I installed TomTom 7 on it and for some reason "sometimes" when I call someone once the phone call is connected TomTom starts up all on its own....

The only software I have instlled on the device is TomTom 7 and the latest version of the TF3D config.

the phone is running the following configuration:-
ROM Version: 1.37.405.1 WWE
ROM Date: 12/06/2008
Radio Version: 1.00.25.03
Protocol Version 52.26a.25.09W

I was told by the Orange rep today that the 3000 were about to be released. They're not going to test all 3000, just a small sample.

Then there'd me no more stock till August.

If that turns out not to be the case then I'll cancel my upgrade.

Touch Pro is a HELL of a lot thicker, so if the sleek look and feel of the Diamond is your bag it's not quite there with the Touch Pro.

It's not a 'better' phone as such, more aimed at those who demand QWERTY and extendable storage, though it does still look pretty cool.

Release date is allegedly september 1st, but this could be delayed all the more (remember the Shift anyone?)

Would love to know more about this sort of thing but I don't even know who I could contact or where on our vast and poorly made intranet system I could I find out more.

If HTC launch the phone on September 1st then "IF" and only "IF" Orange decide to sell the handset just add about 2 Months to the launch before you would see it in an Orange shop or be able to get it from Orange direct.

e.g. The Diamond was launched, when?... Middle of May?....Only made it into Orange stock 2 months later.

DO NOT phone Orange anytime soon asking if they are doing Touch Pro as we only get about 3 weeks notice (if we are lucky) as to what the phones we will be selling, so nobody will be able to give you an answer, they just want to keep the hype down so that they don't sell out faster than they can get them in.

Also NEVER trust the instore magazine, in my 2 and a half years at Orange I have never ever seen one that has the truth in to for example the July Mag is the first one to have the Diamond in it with it's specification and not as a "Coming Soon" phone, and the mistake they made? They said it had a 5.0Mp camera. Another fave of the magazine people is to publish phones in there as coming soon but then never sell them!

So if you want to Touch Pro on Orange don't hold your breath, you might be lucky and get it just in time for XMAS!

Can i check sth with the person that works for Orange? If we flash our diamond to a better and faster ROM and then sth happens and we have to send it back under warranty, does this invalidate our warranty? cause if we have a generic ROM on the handset, we can always claim it was one of the first ones that were not Orange branded, right?
Thanks

I would say do it, I've never heard of anyone being caught out in two years...

From a legal point of view it does invalidate your warranty...

As they used to say on "Blind Date"....

But does it?

I have not read my current T&C, but I found nothing in previous T&Cs to say specifically that that altering the ROM would invalidate the phone warranty.

Technically if the phone is faulty, then it can be returned under warranty and unless the fault was caused directly by the owner/user, then the warranty should be honoured. So if the ROM change caused the fault then you are out of luck, but just because the ROM as been changed, does not mean the fault is the cause of that - for arguments sake a faulty screen or panel button

As this is an electronic device, then updates and enhancements will naturally become available and so its reasonable to assume that these can and should be applied - arguably in the same was as a PC can be upgraded.

But for those not in the UK, check local laws

Orange HSDPA is working well for me when I travel to my 2 local towns - well north of Manchester :) but its mainly 3G unless I have my t-mobile chip in then in town it's always (H)

Sorry, I'm tired, I was getting things confused in my head, removing the SIM LOCK invalidates the warranty unless you get Orange to do it.

ROM updates are ok...

Coolio! I can update my ROM and its OK!?

I ordered my ROM last saturday online from the Orange website....came on the Tuesday. No Orange branding! Just a small Orange logo on the back of the phone!

Got a few admirers at work. Everyone says its far better looking than the iBrick!

Still in love with my Artemis though! Got iGO8 on both!! ;-)

Good news... now i only have to wait for the diamond to get back in stock as i am eligible for an upgrade on Thursday.
Strange that Vodafone have the handset in stock (in Cambridge anyway) and Orange claim it's going to take a minimum of another couple of weeks... anyway...

I can confirm HSDPA on orange is good here in my own town of nottingham.
All day while roaming around I get a good H signal
Call 150 and check with orange that your account is set for 3G HSDPA
Have you also double checked that HSDPA is switched on.

Probably not, i've worked for them for over 2 and a half years and I've never once got a straight answer from anyone!
Simply because Orange is a communications company that is unable to communicate with it's staff - what you will find is everybody will know various broken pieces of information, but NOBODY has the full story!

They are truly hopeless idiots when it comes to information.

I would trust information from the government more than I would from Orange!

So to some up, I wouldn't hold your breath, I would hazzard a guess and say mid - August at the earliest, seen this whole fiasco before with the N95's!

You can tell I love working for them!

They did say that it would take till August to test the 3000 in the warehouse.

As has been said b4, 'they' will be putting their own mods on - the dodgy menu on the right and maybe a mod to TF3D.

So each one out of the box for a firmware update, nothing to do with QC

I was told by someone in an Orange store in Cambride that they're expecting some this weekend. A bit optimistic from what i read above...

Orange in Ipswich haven't got a clue when they are getting stock, and they are apparently one of the "top 100" stores that should have received the initial limited stock, yet they haven't seen any!

Orange in Colchester said that "around 700" are due to be distributed to 340 stores next week, so that's only going to be about two per store, so if you want to get the phone in-store, get in there quick!

I decided to go upgrade on the website, but as that is down I phoned 343 about an upgrade, and they are out of stock until the middle of August. However, the operative said that the phones being delivered in August will not be branded*. However, branding is due to be rolled out on the phones in time for Christmas.

How true this is is anybody's guess, as you can speak to two different operatives within five minutes and get a completely different answer from each of them!

With talk of people being kept on the phone for about 20 minutes before someone answered, I would like to mentioned that after getting through the automated menu and being transferred to an operative (Becky), the phone was answered within two rings! Also, as the upgrade section of the website is down, if you upgrade over the phone they are currently processing the £5 discount on line rental that you would normally get with an on-line upgrade. I've just changed to Dolphin 35 and it's going to cost me £30 per month, with a Diamond reserved for when they get some in stock, at which point they will advise me by text (and I will raise merry Hell if they don't keep to that). I also asked to speak to Becky's Line Manager and he confirmed the £5 per month discount, and also to leave some positive feedback as it was Becky's first day and she was extremely helpful - more helpful than some of the "experienced" operatives I have spoken to in the past.

*I don't believe a word of it, and suspect that they will be branded, and so I will probably be sniffing around xda-developers in the middle of August looking for ROMS to flash!

i'm a very old customer of Orange (had SPVM3100, TyTN_II, and Nokia8800 Sirocco from Orange before).

was in a hurry to get the diamond as an "upgrade". the Upgrade Center put me on a waiting list, but i couldn't wait. so i ordered it through Phone4U - still an Orange contract though.

received it a few days ago. there's no silly Orange stuff on the phone - it's purely HTC ; (of course with a tiny Orange mark in the back).

I sent 6 sms to the diamond (one after another , each in less than 4 seconds) but had NO vibrating or any other issues at all.

you can see the rom/radio details in my sig. as u can see, just changed the radio to 05 hoping to get a better reception, but everything is the same. Of course, inside my house i have terrible reception (as soon as i step out of the door i get full bars - how annoying !) . i am in London.

generally, am happy with the phone but wish i had waited a bit longer to receive it from Vodafone for they have a much better reception with much wider coverage. However, i knew the more i wait, the more diamonds get filled with rubbish bloatware by the networks. at least mine is pure HTC:p

Nah. As she was helpful she's probably already been moved out of the call centre to a more "behind the scenes" role where she doesn't have to be customer facing!

She certainly seemed to have more of a clue of what's going on than the staff at Orange shop in Ipswich, who usually answered every question I had about the Diamond with "sorry, but I don't know". But then they haven't even seen one yet so they are probably being honest.

Well, after googling I found a very useful email address. Orange staffers probably know what it is but it'll be more than thier jobs worth to give it out. :)

I emailed them - they called me back about 2 hours later - I was stunned. They had done some "finding out" and told me what they knew.

Anyway, they do have 3000 phones and about 2000 customers waiting for them. The rest I suppose will go to shops. The delay is they have been testing them but not obviously all of them. Also, they go through the packaging of every single phone (!) and put in various leaflets and might apply customisation. (They weren't sure on this)

They should start releasing stock at the end of this week - when they do I'll be one of the first to get one.

Been watching this thread for the last week or so, as I was wondering what was taking so long with these phones from orange (ordered mine nearly two weeks ago). Thanks to everyone for keeping things updated in the meantime...

Anyway, thought I'd just add that I got a text a few hours ago to tell me the phone was available. I phoned them back to confirm my upgrade, and they've just texted me again to say my diamond has been despatched and I'll get it tomorrow.

Looks like they didn't waste any time once they were ready, so got to be happy with that.

Great forum here... reckon it's gonna be very useful in the next few weeks:)

Yep, i got the same text about 11.30 - after a little bit of haggling over my contract (they wanted me to wait till the 4th of August when my contract was up to get the best deal!!!)
i'm getting mine tomorrow, hopefully without the Orange Bloatware on it!!

it did seem like a first come first served basis for those on the "list" - but the CS rep said they had loads in stock so it might be worth trying even if you haven't put your name down for one!

Now.... which rom to try first? - any suggestions from Orange uk users as to the best roms?? seems like elite v3 and TLR3 are the most popular... although i did see one the other day (diamond project team 2 I think) which had some cool TF3D tweaks on it - any one got any suggestions/tips?

Same as studz I ordered an upgrade to the Diamond a couple of weeks ago.
They called this morning and left a message saying the stock was available.
I called back about 3.30 and they had still had some left, I'm getting mine tomorrow :)
Its a business account if that makes any difference.

I've been reading the forums, trying to work out what I'm going to do with it and blimey, there's a lot of options.
Still got a lot of reading to figure it all out, I have got a quick question,
do the cooked roms people release generally include the registry tweaks in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398265) at the top of this forum? Or is the rom and registry separate?

Sorry if I sound like a super noob, I'm upgrading from a K800i and I'm really not used to 50+ page threads!

By way of coincidence I've even got the day off work so should be able to spend plenty of time with it :D

Me to, here's hoping Mr Courier works to the friday principle of "POETS" day (Piss Off Early Tomorrows Saturday!) and brings mine in the morning!!

Well, just to prove that you get a different answer each time you speak to an adviser, I thought there was nothing to lose by phoning and enquiring about back orders and was told that yes, they do have stock, but it's no-where near the 2000 that was quoted earlier in this thread.

They are working through the back orders in a sort of first come first served basis, so as I only upgraded two days ago I am waaaaaaaay down the list and might not receive my confirmation text until the middle of August AT THE EARLIEST.

As my next billing date is 8th August, and as my patience is not infinite, they have got until then to notify me. If I haven't heard anything by then then the contract will be terminated.

Nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose, but sorry to hear it didn't work out... hopefully the reality won't be as bad as you've been led to believe... good luck.

can someone tell us whether this new batch of diamonds has been bastardised with Orange's ugly ROM?

Pure luck of the draw by the sounds of it! I've had one say that they won't be customised as they are just wanting to get them out to users quickly to satisfy demand, adding that when demand drops then they'll start customising.

Another adviser (the one I spoke to today) has said all of the stock will be customised.

Maybe the people who are due to receive theirs tomorrow or Saturday would like to report their findings...?

That'll depend on the courier that they use. If they use CityLink (or ShittyStink, as they are otherwise known) then it's likely that the only thing you'll have delivered tomorrow is a "While you were out..." card, regardless of whether you were in at the time or not!

Hi Teppic. They did have 3000 stock. Looks like they are disappearing fast. The courier is DPD also known as ParceLine. When it's dispatched you get a tracking number by text message. Mine is due to be delivered where I work tomorrow.

I'll report my findings on the presence of the Orange bloatware.

40 min phone call, operator really nice and fairly knowledgable.
Ordered tonight, told delivery would be Monday.
No delivery charge as ordered on the phone.

Do I really want the weekend to fly by?

well the courier was here at 9.30!!! - the good news is that although it came with a lot of Orange documentation the device had no Orange bloatware on it! yay!

for anyone's info, it came with Opera and Youtube and the HTC slip-case (nice)

Also there was screen protector in the box. I put that on straight away.

They said it had a 5.0Mp camera. Another fave of the magazine people is to publish phones in there as coming soon but then never sell them!
.G.

My experiance of orange retail with this phone has been laughable.

The display card shows 5MP camera and the mag shows 3.2 and an SD card  what made matters worse is the assist was not to sure and said "i'll go and find out", she come back after a few mins and still said it has a 5MB camera :D

I had the same thing in another store...

Surely you'd be charging the bat for 16 hours b4 use!?!?

Why would you do this for a Li-Ion Battery - It's just the case of charging until full about 2.5 hours

So did I but it was off in a week... much better without it

I've been tracking my phone on the DPD website, they tried to deliver it to number 2 on my road about 20 minutes ago. I live at number 17

DPD say that's the address given to them by Orange and they will attempt delivery on Monday now. Orange say they made a mistake processing my order.
Needless to say I'm extremely unimpressed. If this is a sign of things to come, I may regret renewing my contract with Orange.
Stupid, stupid Orange.

As you re-newed over the phone (or online) you have 7 days to decide if you want to keep the device or send it back, the latter canceling any re-new agreement you and orange have (distance selling law)

Why do I have a nasty feeling that when mine (eventually) comes through it will be branded?

Sorry, I'm tired, I was getting things confused in my head, removing the SIM LOCK invalidates the warranty unless you get Orange to do it.

ROM updates are ok...

Sorry bout that...

.G.

I have had to replacements under warranty for a Nookia n70 and a Touch (elf) both of which were modified - but there is no need to tell orange. I just paid the £15 admin fee and got the replacement the following day. :D

I received my confirmation text today! The phone should be delivered tomorrow (between 8:00am - 6:00pm - just as well I've taken this week off from work).

Judging by the operative's comment of, "You can keep track of your unused minutes and data by going to orange.co.uk from your phone. Don't worry about remembering the address (!) as it has already been set up as your homepage on your phone" then it looks like it might have been bastardised!

Hopefully she was just reading from a script and it won't be branded, but I'll let you know!

If it has been branded then it has a date with HardSPL and a new (stock) ROM! :D

My phone was delivered half an hour ago, and in the brief time that I've had it before putting it on charge I've checked and can confirm that it is not branded.

It is, however, using the 1.37 ROM, so that needs upgrading to the latest 1.93 ROM.

Apart from that it's seems great - apart from getting the screen spotless and free from dust before applying the screen protector - that was a bastard because the screen is an absolute dust magnet!

All the Orange Diamonds have the logo on the back of the handset... this does not mean that the device ROM is branded...
