Hello,

A friend of mine wants to move his Sprint Mogul to Verizon service. I read some posts about this, and the best I could glean from them was that this is hit or miss when you call to activate the phone.

Does anyone out there have the latest on this?

thanks,

jtg

The mogul can easily run on Verizon's network with every feature.

The problem is getting Verizon to activate it.

There are only 2 ways your friend can use his Mogul on Verizon's network.

1. Get Verizon to add the ESN to their database.

2. Clone the ESN of an existing Verizon phone to the Mogul (HIGHLY ILLEGAL)

Okay, since we're on this subject... I've been curious about something.

I'm obviously not going to try it because it is morally wrong and maybe even illegal, but.

Is it possible to switch the ESNs with a non-smartphone (eg, an old flipphone).

If that is the case, what is preventing free data access ?

I was curious about this for one simple reason, I don't want to get a data plan or pay data fees for sending and receiving MMS messages. I never had to with my old phone, so why should I now?

Just some food for thought, not going to try because of the above reasons along with the complexities that I'd rather not deal with.

First, I'm an Eagle Scout (really), so this discussion is purely academic if it really is illegal--Can you define illegal with the ESN deal? Is there actually a law about cloning ESN's? We've been cloning MAC addresses on home routers for years for the purpose of sharing Internet from cable/DSL service. how is this different? I certainly disapprove of the current "locked" phone system, so I see no moral issue here if there is no "law" against it.

This was the hit or miss part I referred to in my initial post. Some people reported that Verizon support said "no prob" while others got nowhere because the ESN wasn't in their database. I also read that VZW was relaxing their phone restrictions.

I've been on XDA for several months, have 29 posts now, and read just about everything--I'm not very "Junior" anymore.

just post more, anything will work, sorta like what I am posting now.
or you could take the gc14 approach and just post the words "carrier cab" every hour or so in a dcd rom thread. :O

I was curious about the legal stuff too and I was able to dig this up...

Basically yea, it's a federal crime. Pretty stupid but oh well.

do you mean moving from carrier to carrier or do u mean the whole changing ESN's with a non-smartphone?

Maybe I just got lucky, but I see no reason to mess with your ESN.
I was able to activate a sprint-branded Motorola Q on a preexisting Verizon account using their website. No questions asked, it just took the ESN.

The problem you are going to have with the titan is that we currently have no way to get a Verizon PRI onto a Sprint device. Once Verizon releases a ROM update, it will be easy. Taking a Verizon device to Sprint would be easy since we have the Sprint PRI (but Sprint wouldnt activate the device)

Can't they just flash the Verizon stock ROM then do the upgrading procedure like normal then? Thats how I've been having people fix their xv6800s when they flash with Sprint's firmware and let the customizations run.

Sometimes needs a DMU reset, and almost guaranteed that it needs a new A-Key, but it seems to get the job done.

You must have gotten lucky and the ESN was in the Verizon ESN range. Normally they're not.

Hi mkenny2,

You may want to look into RUIM.

Good luck with that. Verizon doesn't use RUIM in their phones.

So I guess I just eBay (sell) the Mogul, and eBay (buy) a 6800, right?

The Wireless Telephone Protection Act (Public Law 105-172, 112 Stat. 53-55) amends the federal criminal code to prohibit knowingly using, producing, trafficking in, having control or custody of, or possessing hardware or software knowing that it has been configured to insert or modify telecommunication identifying information associated with or contained in a telecommunications instrument so that such instrument may be used to obtain telecommunications service without authorization.

Is it just me, or does this specifically pertain to stealing telecommunications service by cloning a phone. If you are a current customer of the carrier, are you using the service without authorization?

Or are you using the service on a phone that is not authorized...
